I've had Lily Gyros on my list of places to try for a while. I've passed by it a few times and the Yelp reviews read well. I finally made it there on a Wednesday for lunch. It's an old Taco Bell building. Like so old it's before they had drive thrus and the restrooms are in the back of the building and you have to go outside to get to them. The menu is pretty basic with a selection of gyros, Italian beef, etc. My lunch date got the Italian Beef with french fries and the spanakopita appetizer. I ordered the Lilys Salad with Falafel. The best of all of this was the Italian Beef. The spanakopita were the little triangle shaped ones that come from Sams or your favorite food supply service. My salad was lettuce, limp tomato, shredded cheddar cheese (which I have never seen at any Mediterranean restaurant in my life!), a hard boiled egg, and some over cooked uninspired falafel with a yogurt dressing. Nothing was bad but it's a one and done for me. I'll stick to Greek meals on the West side of the Mississippi. I'd like to give this 2.5 but rounded up to 3 since I didn't try the gyro. read more

PLEASE EVERYONE SHARE THIS!!! ‼LONG POST ALERT‼ A normal night of ordering dinner for my family, we decided to order from Lilly's Gyros in Fairview heights. We ordered 4 gyro plates. Because we are tired from working, we send our 19 year old son to get it. When he gets there to pay it's a high amount, so he calls to confirm that it's ok for him to swipe the card for that amount. He asks what's the order to make sure it's the correct one. As he's repeating the order to them, the owner is talking at the same as him which causes a confusion if the food was correct. So I call the store while Shameika on the phone with him to talk to her to confirm the order to make sure it's correct, She can clearly hear the conversation because She still on the phone with him and She hear the lady say hes just standing here and not trying to pay me. I proceed to tell Lilly that he is paying he was just confirming the amount was fine. Then Shameika got the phone from me and explained he is young man and he's paying with our card so he's making sure it's correct. She tells Shameika she has other customers and he's not moving. She told her, that's fine just have him step to the side while you handle your customers. She repeated again he's young and trying to make sure it's correct. She's repeats back to Shameika and say ok he's young ok and we get off the phone and We continue to tell him on the other phone to go ahead and pay everything is good. We got off the phone and not even minute later he calls back and says they are questioning me and asking me my age and I dont feel like I have to answer them Now she's calling me a MUTE to my face out loud in front of other customers and her and the workers are laughing. Our son is an introvert and he doesn't say much as it is. We told him to ask for a refund and that we didnt want the food any more and that's when the MAN told him NO take you food and get out or we will call police and not to come back here. We tell him to leave everything and go sit in the car and we are on our way. He calls us again and says they keep coming to the car trying to make me take the food. We tell him to keep the window up and don't take anything. Shameika asked her mom to go up there to sit with him to keep him calm cuz he's upset til we get there. We get to the place, her moms already went in and asked for our money back. They tell her no. She tells them that was disrespectful and discrimination what you did to my grandson. The male owner says we not discriminating we have a COLORED BOY in the back working now. She yells out he's not a colored boy he's a African American man that's yo problem. so we get in the store and ask for money back. She ignores us completely and kept forcing us to take the food. We keep telling her we don't want the food we want our money back. We will not support you after you just disrespected my son by calling him names to his face. She then toss the bag on the counter for us take the food and say get out her store and I'm calling the police. I've been wanting to try this place ever since a friend told me about it, so when Kat V. suggested it for lunch, I was game. Our first visit was stymied due to the fact that the owners were on vacation, but we were green to go our second try. It's very efficiently run by a family, something that you rarely see these days. The son runs the front, taking orders and working the cash register, and the parents run the kitchen and smiles and waves at everyone who walks in. The son is all-business and actually on the curt side. They have some other employees who take the meals out to the customers and clean off the tables. They have a continual coupon on their website, which is simply "Bring in this coupon for a coupon". The "coupon" is for a free drink. The son kinda sneered at us when we asked him about that. Dude, a coupon is a coupon. Their lunch special is from 11-2 and consists of a 6" gyro, small fries, and soda for about $7.00. It might be a little higher; I forget, but I remember thinking that it wasn't as bad as other lunch places...so I'm a little hesitant to even say it was more than $7. Otherwise, if you miss the lunch special, there is an entire menu of sandwiches, gyros, shawarma, and Italian beef. The gyros came out really fast, despite the fact that there was a lunch crowd, and we dug in. There was a massive amount of meat on the gyro, and it was all tasty, so double thumbs-up for that. I actually ended up using a fork and knife because there was so much meat and sauce that the pita bread actually paled in comparison. But the bread was fresh, and the entire thing was pretty good, but also a little bit on the greasy side. The fries were nothing to write home about. While the gyro did not compare to any Turkish gyro (or any gyro from overseas, for that matter), it's one of the best gyros you can have in the St. Louis area. Things I like about LG: * It has a nifty website, from which I learned the names of the family: Ian, Lilly (of course!), Peyman, and Keivan; and gleaned the fact that the food not only is Greek, but also Spanish and Persian. * LG is two blocks from Randall's, on the same (south) side of the street (yet I never had noticed it). If you're at St. Clair Square, it's five minutes away. * Cherie O., who gets around to all the good places in Illinois, thinks it has one of the best gyros in the area, and that was recommendation enough for me (Thanks, Cherie!). * There's a little yelpburst on the entry door, which feels more and more like a good sign, as it means the owners are paying attention to social media and making an effort to provide an excellent experience for customers, old and new. * The moment I walked in, Lilly greeted me with a smile, offered a menu, and quickly took my order. * The wait time for takeout was only about ten minutes. * The food (lamb shank and rice, chicken shawarma plate, side salad) was excellent, the meats fall-off-the-bone tender, the rice flavorful, and the salad greens fresh. Yes, the building looks worn, and the parking lot has plenty of low spots for puddling water. Needing someplace to eat before spending time at Barnes and Noble, I was wanting someplace that wasn't a chain or fast food. I thought about Fortel's or The Chuckwagon, but wanted something different. That's when Lilly's came from somewhere in the back of my mind. Anyway, I've driven by there for many years and have just never thought about going. But a while ago out at Faust Park, on a food truck event my wife ate at the Go Gyro Go truck and loved it and has been mentioning gyros since. So we did a little research on Yelp and found nothing but glowing reviews so we were in. So now that my life story is over, (sorry) let's talk about Lilly's. Lilly Gyros is now on my list of favorite places to eat. The interior may be dated, but the food is a definite classic. The location is an old Taco Bell, and the outside and inside are a little quaint. They have up gyro posters that are circa 1980's. There are table and chair in the center of the restaurant but the booths on the outside walls appear original to the Taco Bell. Amongst the signs that are posted include two that ask customers to "Share your love, but not your soda." I point this out because I know families where this is the norm. so be warned. As for the food, where to start. I ordered the Gyro Platter, and my wife ordered a Regular Gyro, and then we ordered Spinach Pies and Humus. The Regular Gyro comes with the meat, onion, tomato and Lilly Sauce (tzatziki) and looks a bit like a taco. The platter on the other hand is the ingredients of the gyro on the plate served in the same style as a fajita would be with the pita bread on top, and then add in a side of fries. In either case, the gyros were exceptional. The meat was moist and well seasoned, and from the heating method the outside had a little bit of a bark developing on it. The Lilly Sauce paired very well with the meat and the onion and tomato. The Spinach Pies were awesome. Like a little spinach empanada, they spinach wrapped in phyllo dough. The filling was creamy and the phyllo was light and flaky. The humus on the other hand was good but not the stand out that everything else was. Mind you, I would buy it again if in the mood for humus, but I don't know that I would travel across town for it. Overall, however, I loved Lilly's. The price point, the portions, the flavor, even the quaint atmosphere made it someplace I will eat at again. read more

Yum yum yum! When my boyfriend got back from Greece where he was for work, he was desperate to find another great Greek place. This was the one place that did not disappoint him, or me when he took me there. The portions are huge and the family that runs and owns it is fantastic. We look to try something different when we go but you end up having the Gyros and it is hard to try anything else. They are delicious and come in 3 different sizes. I don't normally *do* bread or sweets, because I eat mostly raw vegan, but this place is off-the-hook-delicious, and it is absolutely worth it. The fluffy soft pita bread and the fragrant homemade baklava are ridiculous... So much so, that I almost wish I had not tried them. That is how good they are. I also ordered two pieces of falafel à la cart and dipped them in some of the Lillys special sauce, and it was outstanding. I love gyros, and have had them at many St. Louis establishments. I tend to eat lunch out since my job has me all over the place. I stopped in here after reading several Yelpers reviews. I wasn't a fan of the 6",7",8" pita choices. I got the lunch special, which was a 6" gyro, fries, and drink...around $8.50. As far as quantity, the gyro had a massive amount of meat. So much so, that you couldn't really taste anything else. I noticed they heat the meat up in a giant cast iron skillet, almost boiling it. I prefer the places that have the meat turning on a spit, so the meat gets browned, with little crispy edges. The homemade sauce ended up a watery mess because of the way they heated the meat. So far, The Gyro Company on Gravois blows this place away. read more

Lily grill has always made me feel above and beyond welcome in their tiny eatery. I love that, and I can appreciate how hard that must be to maintain day after day. The food is always more than generous in proportion to the price, especially the Gyros. The Tzatziki is just right. And I love the Baklava. I often purchase and leave, so the small space of the old taco bell does not affect me. This family-run business is absolutely fantastic! Their diligent hard work at keeping this place clean, friendly, and authentic (as authentic as you'll find in the Metro-East area), is remarkable, considering they are surrounded by giant box-chain restaurants (which seem to be popular with the majority of the populace). Having lived overseas and had my share of quick ethnic foods served from rolling carts or hole-in-the-wall eateries, Lilly's is the kind of bistro where you can slow down from the hectic atmosphere outside (with a little imagination, the old Taco Bell hut becomes a great Greek cafe). Their portions are more than generous; the food is always fresh; and the prices are very reasonable. I love the Tsatiki sauce they have - it's the real deal. When you crave a gyro, this place is the way to go for quick service and good food. The fact that they are closed on Sundays reminds me of a time not long-ago, when people slowed down enough to keep personal, family time sacred.
