Placed a phone order, the cashier rudely said it wasnt ready and opened the door for me to exit. After 40mins I went back in to check on it and they same rude cashier said they didn't have my order. Went for breakfast but ended up getting one of the lunch burritos instead since I wanted one with Chicken. Pretty good burrito and really liked the sauce they gave on the side. Heads up though, there is a bit of a wait for their burritos (~20min). I personally thought the chicken in the burrito was a bit dry and tough to chew which is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. Besides that, the customer service and food were great and I'd be happy to visit again! There's also plenty of parking since it's in the same plaza as Pavilions. This is probably one of the best breakfast burritos I have ever had. Believe it or not, the star of the show was the beans. I would definitely get it again. Beware about asking for spicy guacamole because they mean spicy. The reason I can't give this place 5 stars is just the wait. The breakfast burritos and fish burritos here are so good that its hard to stray from them, but I finally brought myself to do so for their weekly tamale special. They have chicken tamales Wednesday and Thursday for $2.25 each and they are comforting and delicious (see picture). I was good after 2.5 of them. The chicken is smothered in a red sauce which is savory and slightly sweet and it's super messy, but worth it. Service is usually friendly and good here, just make sure you clarify your order if you call ahead (and you should call ahead if you don't want to wait 30 minutes or more) because it's loud in the cafe and they can misunderstand your order. This happened to me when I asked for a side plate of rice and beans (which is $2.50) and they thought I wanted a container of beans and a container of rice ($4 each). But I didn't mind too much because their refried beans are amazing. They make them fresh with pinto beans and oil, they have a great velvety texture rather than a thick one and are super flavorful. The rice alone is pretty bland though, but it does have a great soft and chewy texture which makes it a great addition to the burritos and beans. read more

Takeout order Asada Burrito This is a busy place for lunch or takeout so call ahead. I got a medium size Asada burrito which was basically a classic Mexican burrito. You choose your protein and the other fillings include refried pinto beans and rice. They also add tomato, onion, and cilantro. Not in the Pico de Gallo form just the individual vegetables. Its a very soft burrito. They said over the phone that the Asada is grilled but I doubt it because it doesn't taste grilled nor does it have any grill marks. What they do is cut the beef into small pieces then bake or braise till tender and then lightly sear on the plancha. It's not flank meat either which is common for Asada, it is some type of sirloin or chuck meat. Along with the burrito you will receive their spicy green salsa which they only give you 3 tiny containers of before an extra charge. The salsa was creamy so I asked if they add avocado and they said no. I don't know if I believe them. It has a creamy consistency that you can't get from just onions, garlic, and peppers. If they don't use avocado I think the consistency is from drizzling in oil to the salsa and frying each item before blending. Finally, the food wasn't too bad but not standout either, maybe it's from the lack of competition from being the only Mexican spot in the area. But altogether I still recommend stopping by here to get some takeout because nothing beats eating on the beach. read more

Came here last weekend and me and my friends ordered 2 fish burritos and fish tacos, we waited an hour and 15 mins to get our order. After 45 mins we asked where our order was and they had forgotten. Once we complained they still waited another 25 minutes before starting our order. The food was hefty and delicious, but not worth the wait. When we got there, there was only two people in front of us. We didn't get offered anything for the forgetfulness and the guy at the front was rude to us after we asked about our missing order an hour after waiting. I visited this place with my son today. He's been there few times before and due to his comments I wanted to try it. It's low key and the service is great. I ordered a chicken burrito. I was told by the cashier that the food is cooked daily. It comes with rice, beans, cilantro, onions and the meat. I must say it did taste fresh as well as delicious. It was very moist and the chicken was soft. They are busy selling to a lot of construction workers and locals, most of the orders are picked up. I have heard of Lily's before and glad I finally got to try it out. I got the veggie burger with a side of fries. The whole meal was a little pricey, but I expected that since it was located in Malibu. I thought the portion size was pretty good however for the cost. The veggie burger was yummy and the fries were good and healthy-ish tasting too! The fries had 0 seasoning on them which threw me off in the beginning but ultimately made me feel better about eating the whole thing. **This is really a 3.5 star review. But because f'ing Covid isn't making life easier for anyone, we're doing 5 stars with honest feedback. The 15oz of (excellent) guacamole came with a tiny bag that was only 1/2 full of chips. Like mayyybe 20 chips. We ran back in to get more and while they weren't necessarily rude, the owner was a little dismissive telling us that "that's just how much it comes with" and explained how many avocados were in the quac...and the pricing...neither of which we had any issue with. We simply needed more than 20 chips. Ended up paying $5 for another bag of chips, so $20 for chips and guacamole (with a $90+ total bill). We did have to wait for more chips to be made after running back in, so maybe the chip bag was light because they had simply run out...but if that's the case, just give us another 1/2 bag instead of trying to justify that ridiculous portion and charging us again. Never in my life have I seen a restaurant charge for something that should be on a taco. I added cheese for a $1 and side of rice for a $1.75 and when I opened my box there was no cheese. Just meat and a huge glob of cilantro and lettuce. Accidents happen, so I shrugged it off and decided I was going to eat it anyway. I've had tacos with just meat before, and they have been good; however, the carnitas had no flavor and it was dry. It actually hurt to swallow. Favorite burrito spot in Los Angeles, hands down. Th3 breakfast burrito is a classic and definitely as good as (if not better than) Wake n Late (very different but equally delicious). Unpopular opinion but the fish burrito is the best thing on the menu-- I said and I stand by it. I understand fish is not for everyone but if you're feeling adventurous and enjoy fish, I highly recommend it. Also, the house sauce is a must. It's made fresh so sometimes it's spicier than others. I have a very low tolerance for spicy-ness and I will always add Lily's sauce to my burrito, even when it's too hot, it's so worth it. Call/order in advance, they're so busy and the wait is usually long but so worth it. And please don't forget to tip generously, they're all so hardworking and friendly. read more

Keeping things in perspective. The last time I came here I was over 15 years ago so I probably had delusions of grandeur going through my head recalling the best breakfast burrito that I ever had. Long gone are the days when you were happy to hit up Lily's on the way to the beach and bask in the delight of a breakfast burrito. Now we have to worry about COVID, long lines, masks and rude staff. Did I mention long lines? Seriously, this place has lines out the door and they when you order they tell you it's another 45 minutes for a burrito. Yes, a burrito takes 45 minutes. No amount of beans and cheese will make up for 45 minutes. I get they are busy but I don't get the ratings. The beans were too runny and overtook the flavor of the burrito. There was hardly any egg and bacons and the tortilla was hard. The only saving grace was their green salsa. Nice heat BTW. Other than that this thing is a big mess. Honestly, not worth the wait and price. The only reason why I Dan think it gets such rave reviews is because you are starving by the time you get it so anything tastes good. First time trying this place. This review is solely for the chile relleno burrito (which I tried wet style) because I have no experience with any other item and have never set foot in the restaurant. Postives: burrito was large and filling. Tortilla was large, fresh, chewy and tasty. Could be enough for two. Flavor of the overall wet chile relleno burrito was ok, I've had several at other places that were much better. Primary complaints would be ratio of beans and rice to the actual chile relleno, and the sauce they use for the wet burrito. Their sauce is very thick and not very flavorful, The texture is essentially like a marinara mixed with tomato paste, and the flavor not that different either minus the Italian seasonings that most marinaras would have. I prefer a thinner more flavorful sauce. But the burrito was filled with a large poblano pepper with a good amount of the proper cheese filling (along the lines of Oaxacan cheese: white, melty, kind of like a Monterey Jack but has the melting properties and stretchiness of a mozzarella) and seemed decently battered, though it was kind of hard to tell given the state the burrito arrived in. Always love to support local businesses vs chains. Negatives: very expensive for what it was. Sure it was large and filling, but a lot of that was beans and rice. $16 for the burrito plus $3.50 to get it wet. Because of the price I would not order it again. I ordered directly on their website and picked up. Long wait time. It took over 45 minutes for my order to be ready. My friend who picked it up for me so that there were two other people in line and they were told that the wait time was 1 hour. Overall, I would try this place again but wouldn't order the same thing, even though chile rellenos plates and burritos are some of my favorite items to order at places like this. For whatever reason (maybe because they use imported Oaxacan cheese? Just a guess) the chile relleno burritos are substantially more expensive than their other burrito offerings. read more

The beans and hot sauce are the stand out ingredients. The brand have just the right amount of richness and salt (I was shocked when I learned there was no lard in the beans!) The house made hot sauce adds just the right amount of heat. The greatness of the burrito however comes from the way the burrito is assembled and the perfect balance of those five ingredients. For 3 of us, we ordered: 1) Breakfast burrito - stuffed w/ egg, cheese, bacon, and beans (large), $6.85 My husband thinks this was the best breakfast burrito he's ever had, and he's tried many many breakfast burritos in the past. Eggs are fluffy, beans are in a pureed form, tons of bacon (but not greasy). He could hardly taste any of the cheese, but it was perfectly merged with the rest of the ingredients. 2) Breakfast burrito - same as above (small), $5.85 3) Breakfast burrito - stuffed w/ egg, cheese, HAM, and beans (small), $6.85 Instead of bacon, I asked them to replace it with ham, and they gladly did that, but charged me the price of "large" even though my burrito was really a small size. What's up with that? Every burrito came with a small container of homemade hot sauce (olive green in color), which was amazing! Tapatio was available, too. Down-sides: Wait time was 30 minutes to get our burritos. The cashier who took our order was a bit snappy. BTW, this establishment is neither a cafe or a pastry shop (not sure why their name has cafe and pastries in it). It's straight Mexican.
