We ordered takeaway from this spot - my boyfriend was working nearby and brought the order home. We tried the Malibu Roll, Lox Roll, gyoza, and seaweed salad. The lox roll (called a "philly roll" elsewhere - salmon, cucumber, cream cheese), the gyoza, and the seaweed salad were on point. The Malibu roll (lobster, crab, amberjack, lemon, and more with sliced jalapenos and spicy eel sauce) was phenomenal - fresh, flavourful, and beautifully plated, even in takeout packaging. Every item was boxed properly and we received napkins, chopsticks, and sushi condiments. The wait time for the order was fewer than 15 minutes - my boyfriend barely had time to drink a Sapporo there as he waited to pick it up. With such delicious sushi and a pleasant and efficient staff, I'd go out of my way to come here if I was in Malibu. Great casual option if you don't want to get gussied up for Nobu.

Sat at the sushi bar and service was great. I understand why they have so many good reviews. The orange chicken was excellent, which was quite the surprise. The sushi rolls were good. Very delightful spicy tuna crispy rice and halibut sushi.

It's Saturday night around 7:30 p.m. There are only four customers inside, all seated at the bar. I'm greeted by a young man who asks whether I'd like to sit inside or outside. I choose outside, and he tells me he'll bring a menu. Ten minutes pass. No menu. He never returns. Another employee - a woman with a long braid - is darting in and out, clearly busy, but never once acknowledges me or says hello. I eventually go inside to request a menu. The same young man asks if I'd like water; I say yes. The water never arrives. The woman with the long braid continues going in and out of the very small shop another five or six times. I'm seated directly outside the door, yet I'm completely ignored. A third employee appears, and it's clear there's confusion about who is doing what. Still, no one takes responsibility. I have to ask - again - if my order will be taken and also request water once more. At this point, I ask the young man directly whether I should just leave and go somewhere else, because it's obvious their operations aren't dialed in. I'm hungry and already know what I want: the blue crab roll and the Mexicali roll. The food comes out fairly quickly, and while it is fine and did what it needed to do, nothing ruins a meal faster than inattentive service. No one checks in to see if I need anything. At one point, the third employee mumbles a quick apology and mentions they want to close the shop door. I won't be coming back. The overall service communicated a clear lack of care, and what they managed to do exceptionally well was leave me with the impression that I didn't matter at all.

The Mango Poke here is so delicious. All the ingredients are very fresh. It just adds on to the beautiful weather here in Malibu. I'm so glad I decided to try this place. Service is great as well. Thank you for a wonderful lunch. You have got a very happy customer here.

This is my go to for faaaaabulous, well crafted and superb rolls especially the Shiso Luna. Incredible No way Whhaaaat? Heaven Like buttah! It's layered so well that the roll separates in an oh-so-amazing journey inside my mouth. Unbelievably well done! I have never never ever eaten halibut (top layer) and yellowtail in a roll that did not but instead tasted so superb. With the mysterious shiso to pepper it up! So fresh. So fresh! And let the record show ... Chef knows I love Kama, so he got sous to freshly cut one up for me. And by golly! Quiet please. I need to pause and delight in this. No one can take this heaven away from me. Not on a mundane Monday! Not even if LA is celebrating downtown for the Dodgers. I love the Dodgers and am so proud of them ... but my love for Howdy's Sushi ... no can do. I'll watch you on YouTube Ohtani-San! ps Double Spicy Tuna - a very simple and popular name for something NOT a single sushi place in Malibu (wink wink) can match. The miniature (artistically crafted) sprouts on each piece - wow! How does chef do it! This is Michelin star level... but shhhh. Yes Images included. This time I didn't forget. So great. So great!

    Crispy rice cake
    Fateha A.

Very limited seating inside since it's a tiny space. They have 11-course omakase for $120. We got: 1) 3/5 spicy tuna crispy rice cakes ($15) - which my family didn't like, but I thought it was decent. 2) 5/5 mango poke bowl ($24) - I been craving poke for months, been years since I've had. The mango was really fresh, firm, balanced with sweet & slightly sour flavors. The fish was tuna & salmon I believe. Comes with raspberries & blackberries. Salivating as I'm typing. I can def eat another bowl. Too bad Malibu is so far. 3) 3/5 three hand roll combo: spicy toro, yellowtail & salmon ($30) - these are pretty standard 4) 3/5 classic bento ($30): Cali roll & cucumber salad, 3 nigiris, shrimp & pumpkin tempura. The shrimp tempura was the best thing in the box. It was so good, we got an order of just shrimp tempura. Everything else in the box was pretty standard. 5) 5/5 shrimp tempura ($14) You know it's good when you don't even need sauce. The batter was so crispy.

Best service. Vano here is the MAN.

Parking was a little tough on a weekend during the summer, but to be expected. We got a spot down the street on PCH and walked there -- all good. We waited in line for about 20 minutes which gave us plenty of time to get a little mini tan AND decide what we wanted by the time we got to the register: grilled swordfish with rice pilaf and salad, fried shrimp plate with fries, a New England clam chowder and 2 iced teas. First, the swordfish -- a delicious fish, barely needed to be seasoned. that said, I asked for it well done and part of the fish was still a bit undercooked. the salad was a BORE. nothing tasty about it -- don't bother - the Italian dressing tasted like cheap bottled dressing from the market. I expected more. the rice pilaf was good but I felt like it had A LOT of butter in it -- not necessary -- the flavor was there without the extra fat. my friend got the fried shrimp and fries and it was ... just .... OK. You tell me how ANYTHING fried is just OK. It doesn't make sense. Shrimp tasted like it had been frozen. I'm not saying it was -- just saying it tasted like it. Oh and my friend got the LAST order of Dungeness Crab and didn't even eat it -- said it gave him the ick. But, in fairness -- it was the last bit of it. Still, the chefs should only want to serve the best and this was not it! The New England clam chowder though = DELICIOUS. it was the fave of everything we ordered. I'd go back, but I'd go on a weekday when they are not so slammed. I bet the food is better and I hate waiting in line for food especially when it's just OK.

The food was "OK". My wife ordered lamb chops and I had a bone in New York. The prices were quite high, but not astronomical, assuming the meat had been better prepared. It was "OK". The appetizers were a disaster. Grilled peach and prosciutto yielded peaches that were not grilled, low quality grainy ricotta and mediocre prosciutto. Bland and over priced. The iceberg wedge salad was large but was bland and ungenerous, with the allegedly associated salad dressing and other assorted salad ingredients. Service? Adequate. Polite, but rushed. Our server was hurried and conducted "big smile" performative check- ins that felt as if they had no discernible purpose other than to move us through courses and turn tables. I always assume that this style of service is not the server's fault, but a management choice. I am also willing to admit that the server was likely unable to conduct anything close to a genuine interest in our dinner experience because of the noise. Lucky's in Montecito attracts a very different crowd. More professional and reserved. The night we were at the Malibu location, it seemed to attract a lot of obnoxious, rude and badly dressed people who were advertising their real or fantasized connection to "the industry" by wearing t shirts, shorts, hoodies or otherwise dressing like slobs. We were profoundly relieved to exit Lucky's. Not my idea of how to drop $400+

One thing to know: they have separate morning and dinner menus, and if you show up in between like we did, you'll be ordering from a more limited menu. Thankfully, "limited" here still gave us plenty to work with. We started with the clam chowder, which tasted incredibly fresh, creamy without being too heavy, and was a great start. Then came the burger and lobster roll, and both absolutely hit the spot. The lobster roll was loaded with big pieces of lobster, while the burger was simple, juicy, and paired perfectly with those thin crispy fries. Service deserves its own mention. Everything came out quickly, and what stood out most was how everyone seemed willing to help everyone. It didn't matter whose table it was--if a customer needed something, whoever was nearby stepped in. That kind of teamwork makes a restaurant feel very well run. Great food, beautiful Malibu atmosphere, fast service, and a team that actually pays attention. Definitely coming back, except next time I'm checking the clock first so I can properly attack the full menu.
