A few months ago, I visited the Giant Tiger on Kennedy Road in Scarborough on a Wednesday night. It deviated from my usual errands done in Whitchurch-Stouffville. I noticed Li's Hakka No. 1 Restaurant next door. I flagged it in my head, as I have a thing for Hakka food. Two Sundays ago, I was out running errands. I needed lunch. I remembered this eatery and placed a takeout order through Skip the Dishes. I ordered while I was in the Beaches. It took perhaps ten minutes to drive over to this restaurant. I was ten minutes early. I got to the parking lot and backed into a spot. I then watched a pickup truck make his own parking spot in front of me. The car next to mine had quite the task of getting out of his spot to leave the lot. Why are some folks so inconsiderate when it comes to parking and blocking others? When my order was ready, I headed inside. To my left was a male staff member chowing down. The restaurant is deep and spacious. I headed to the counter to speak to a woman. I indicated my order with Skip the Dishes and she handed me my order. I thanked her as I took photos like I generally do. I drove home and had a late lunch at nearly 3 pm. I ordered the following items: - Chilli chicken with a side of steamed rice - Pan-fried chicken dumplings (10) Let's start with the chicken dumplings. The searing on the dumplings was excellent. It wasn't overdone, but had a lot of flavour. The wrapper is thicker than normal, but it works to protect the filling from bursting out. The chicken filling was delicious. It has the right amount of saltiness from the soy. I liked the green onion with the chicken. It came with dipping sauce that was more on the vinegar-acidic side. Whenever I visit a new Hakka place, the dish that I tend to order as my baseline is chilli chicken. As expected, the default is dark meat with gravy. It's perfect for my liking. You pay more to get white meat and get it dry. The chicken was tender. The gravy was flavourful with lots of chopped chillis. The spice level was just the way that I like it. It's spicy enough that you get the heat, but it doesn't overpower the spices in the sauce. The chicken morsels were lightly battered before mixed with the gravy. My only issue, which was unfortunate, was with the steamed rice. It came in a styrofoam container. I basically plopped the rice onto my plate. I witnessed what was either a single eyelash or eyebrow hair at the bottom of the container, which was now the focal point on my mound of rice. I scooped out the rice around the lash or whatever it was, and continued with my meal. I don't think that I've ever done that before. I'm still alive and haven't grown a third leg. My favourite dish is spicy garlic chicken. This place has it. I want to give that a try next and hope that my steamed rice looks normal. (57) read more

Great lunch special you get tons of food for around 10 bucks. I Recommend takeout they do charge a dine-in fee, but that's typical with a lot of Hakka places. The food is great. I recommend the general TSO or the Manchurian chicken. read more

I have been going here for years now and it's definitely a 5/5 (based on in-door dining only). So, just trust me when I say this, try to eat it while it's still hot/warm. Anyways, you can't go wrong with your tried and trusted favourites here. The hot + sour soup with shrimp wontons are always worth buying. The chilli chicken and/or manchurian chicken on rice (lunch special) is amazing as well. read more

Had the Yeung Chow fried rice and the spicy crispy beef. Both were prepared perfectly. The beef was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was just a bit spicy, nothing too overpowering. The Yeung Chow fried rice here is probably the best I've ever had. This is a go-to dish each time I'm here. I highly recommend ordering the rice to anyone that comes here. It's not fancy, but there's a beauty to their simplicity. Friendly service, clean tables, and ample parking are added bonuses to the already amazing food. They've been pretty consistent with serving up delicious food that tastes the same every time (been here gazillion times with lunch squad). The chili chicken is not really typical to other places, it isn't spicy and tastes more like soya-sauce chicken. That's the only thing I don't enjoy here - but perhaps others would prefer it over traditional chili-chicken [shrugs]. Definitely from me!! PS. Stale garbage. The worst takeout I've had in a while. I ordered the chilli chicken on rice and was thoroughly surprised when 5 minutes into the meal my stomach started to turn. Wasn't cheap too almost $25 a person.. go elsewhere. read more

Dropped by at this restaurant for take-out before going shopping at Giang Tiger. Ordered two lunch specials; Chili Chicken( two chilies) & Thai Mango Chicken( one chili). Generous portion size, cheap eats and quick service. My lunch came with one spring roll and a bottle of water. I liked Thai mango chicken better than chili chicken, however I did not tasted any mango flavor from that dish. Thai mango was supposed to be less spicier than chili chicken. This review is for their new/re-location at 85 Ellesmere Rd., Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario. Chili Chicken without gravy was rubbery and barely lukewarm--probably made in advance and inadequately reheated. Eggplant was far superior and was hot and well flavoured. Skimpy serving of steamed rice. Nice decor and serving dishes. Good selection of vegetarian dishes and they were willing to customize. Dine-in service was somewhat inadequate considering that this is a relocation from Kennedy Rd., not a brand new venture, and they have had a month to settle in. Their menu states clearly that gratuities will automatically be added to the bill and there was indeed an 10% charge on the final bill. Just for their information, we usually tip more. read more

The food was also very disappointing, We order two-people dinner, The Chicken rice was not cooked properly, there is no salt and spicy and Moreover it was not hot. This is not a Hakka restaurant.The worst chili chicken I ever had bar Nine.The other dishes were as bad - greasy & too salty. They also have an arbitrary 10% dine in service charge tagged on your bill which they don't tell you about..... Very very disappointed. Will never go back again. read more

I am a fan of Hakka No. 1. Consistent service and quality at their locations. Straight forward hakka food, believe 140 menu items ( always wonder how the chef memorizes all the recipes ), good portions, and great pricing. Unlike most locations they have lunch specials on weekends as well. I occasionally go to the Keele and Kingston Road location. Recently found out about Kennedy and Eglinton, I believe its new. Really nice large space, good amount of seating for large groups. With large windows, bringing in plenty of natural light. Clean environment. Large TV's, which is nice. Went on a weekend afternoon, service was quick. We ordered the chili chicken, bombay chicken, and mango chicken. Flavors were there, no issues with the food. My friends and I enjoyed it. My only issue was the side condiments. I wouldn't say that the sriracha went bad or something, but just tasted a bit off and had a weird consistency. As a result we got a handful of chili sauce packets, staff were generous with that.I didn't inspect every sriracha holder, but honestly wouldn't bring the place down cause of this. Would recommend for catering as well. Ordered a chili chicken tray for $45.00 cash. Fed 10 people, no issues. read more

First time going to this specific location, never going back. Got the lemon chicken that had the sauce on the side and a bowl of rice. Found a long hair that was fried into my chicken, the food is overpriced and the service was terrible. Would not ever recommend to anyone. read more

If you want fried calamari that has a rubber band texture, this is your place. 15 minutes of food pick and to the kitchen table, the food/ breading was falling apart, chilli chicken tasted nothing like the 'typical' Hakka chilli chicken. Only item that was a 3/5, was there fried rice. Don't sacrifice convenience over quality. Many alternatives around the bend. Enjoy & Be Well. read more

Their chilli chicken and egg fried rice is better than the ones you would find at most other hakkas or Chinese restaurants

Just saw this place on UberEats. Ordered Wanton Chicken Soup, Chicken spicy Pakoras, Veggie Spring Rolls, and Thai Curry Shrimp with Steamed Rice. Flavor was amazing and the portions were perfect. Well packaged and Fast...they just need to make sure to add more dipping sauce for the Pakoras...one container was not enough. Overall, will order again for sure!!! read more

Went there with my daughter for dinner the place was freezing the wait staff was super rude even to my daughter when she asked for a refill smh. So how was the food u ask? Nasty I love hakka and this food was a waste of money. We were at the Giant Tiger next door and had a small window for something to eat before my daughter had gymnastics. I live in the area and I would never go here again especially when u have waaaaaaaaaay better places in the area like Chung Moi or Spicy Dragon hell even Hakka Legend. The takeout option is great and I appreciate their lunch specials very much. I've eaten here once before dining in and it was a pleasant lunch experience. But mostly I do their take out lunch specials. Good size portion plus appetizer and beverage water included all for one set price. And that's a good thing. Great bargain. Also there was a time when I bought takeout lunch and it was late in the afternoon when the restaurant wasn't busy. I asked them if I could eat my takeout lunch in the restaurant because I was sooooo hungry, and they let me do it, so I appreciate their understanding. read more

Wow, that is the worst service I have received in a restuarant. couldn't even place a take out order and had to leave. So I can't tell you about the food. I have been going to the Kingston Road location approximately once a week since it opened and love the food and service. Someone suggested I try this location as they thought the food was even better, but I have never felt so much like someone just did not want to serve me. Too bad, I will not go back to any location as I cannot support the franchise. After standing at the counter for a few minutes, only customer, I tried to get the person behind the counters attention (she had her back to me) but all she did was turn around and hold up a finger as if to wait. One another customer came in and stood beside me she immediately turned around and started taking that persons order. I motioned to her and got the finger again. Then a second customer came in and she started taking their order. I interrupted asked why was I not being served. At that time I got the third finger of the night as if saying do not be rude. I've only been to this location once (last month). I went there based on the recommendation of a friend who stated that the chili chicken is better than Federicks.....WRONG.....BAD ADVICE!!! Firstly, they get 5/5 for having my order ready when I came to pick it up (I had called fist and arrived at the location in 7 minutes from my phone call). The person on the phone was very nice as was the lady when I collected it (so another 5/5) for that. BUT....I noticed that the glass windows and doors were dirty....like they had a greasy film all over them....they weren't clean....so for that they get a 1 out of 5. Now, as for the food, they get a 0 out 5! I had ordered the Chili Chicken (dry)...no only was there not enough rice to go with the chicken, but the chicken had a horrible after taste, it was as though it was doused in MSG....it tasted like the Maggi Chicken bouillon cubes. It left your mouth dry and even with multiple sips of water, you could still taste the after taste.....I began to worry if the chicken had gone bad and maybe they soaked it in some sort of chemicals hence the chemical like after taste. I had to be thrown out. Some people will put up with a dirty location and higher than average prices, but if the food itself tastes bad....well, it deserves a ZERO.....sorry, I don't think I'll give this place a 2nd chance. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. We had the Masala Chicken, Cantonese Veg Chow Mein, Spicy Green Beans, Veg Pokara and Hakka Noodles. All were yum! This is going to be our new go to Hakka place. Cannot speak to the inhouse service as we did take-out but can say that the food was ready fairly quickly though the place was packed on a Sunday. read more
