Very small, busy place. We went today and immediately realized that everyone calls in orders ahead so that they don't have to wait. But we had time so decided to hang out for these amazing sandwiches everyone was raving about. The man who took our order said it would be about 40 minutes. No problem. It's a tough restaurant to wait in because it is so small but we managed. Several other people came in without calling in orders after us so they were waiting as well. Forty minutes came and went and still, no sandwiches. At 65 minutes, a man who came in 20 minutes AFTER us got his sandwich. My husband and I and the couple next to us (who came right after us but before that man) looked obviously shocked and annoyed, but didn't say anything. Then, about five minutes later, the man who takes orders came over to ask us to tell him again what we ordered! That was it. We were willing to wait for food for a long time, but when it looked like we may never get a sandwich because the orders weren't even being run in order, we were done. I've tried to eat at Lisa's Kitchen on 4 separate occasions. I would like to detail those 4 occasions for you today. 1) August 27, 2017 - My girlfriend had just moved to Manayunk. We had spent the previous evening celebrating the move with a tour of the watering holes of Main Street. It was a fantastic evening. We woke up the next morning feeling as one does after a fantastic evening. All I felt was the urge for a breakfast sandwich. Google led us to Lisa's Kitchen. "Let's walk there," my girlfriend says. "We can see more of the area." I thought that was a great idea. Now if you know Manayunk, it's just a lot of hills. So many hills. Poconos, Jr. Walking to Lisa's, while pleasant, was certainly a chore for 2 hungover young professionals past their college prime. So imagine our surprise when we got to Lisa's...and it was closed. The darkness inside of that building haunted me. "Maybe we had the opening time wrong," we said. Nay. A phone call confirmed our fear: Lisa's was closed (until September). We settled for Manhattan Bagel that morning. 2) September 17, 2017 - It was my first time visiting my girlfriend in Manayunk in a month. I was still scarred from my last visit. Saturday night went exactly the way my previous Saturday night in Manayunk had gone. I woke up Sunday feeling the same way. "Hey," I thought, "it's September! Let's check out Lisa's." We walked down that hill with a certain pep in our step. This would be the day I finally had the breakfast sandwich worthy of the 5 star reviews on Yelp. We rounded the corner...to see that darkness again. The taunting, haunting darkness. The windows seemed to form a sadistic smile that said, "We know why you're here. We're not sorry for your disappointment." The hurt was compounded by the confusion. The message had clearly said September. Was it not September? Had it not been September for 16 days already? Would Lisa's Kitchen become my own personal El Dorado: always talked about in stories, but never truly attainable? 3) November 4, 2017 - Yes it would. It was a cold, cloudy day in November. College football was on all day. What goes better with college football than an authentic, locally-made cheesesteak? (A few things do, but we really wanted cheesesteaks). "Let's give Lisa's another try," I foolishly proposed. "I'm doing school work," my girlfriend said, "but you can go see. It's open by now." It was open. It was very open. I had reached the promised land. A choir of angels sang as I crossed the threshold. The smell that filled my nostrils was...otherworldly. My previous trials and tribulations had led me to this moment. I approached. "Hello," I said to the nice man behind the counter, "I would like 2 cheesesteaks to go." He looked at me, detached, but not unkindly, and said, "That'll be about 45 minutes." Time stopped. The choir of angels who had intoned their beautiful hymn were overcome with a fit of coughing. The otherworldly smell turned to sulfur. I felt betrayed. I did not have 45 minutes. My game was starting in 25 minutes. In this day and age when our attention has been stolen by our smart phones, 45 minutes seemed a lifetime. I admit to being a victim of my generation, but I would not wait for 45 minutes. Lisa's Kitchen had toyed with me for long enough. I called it off. 4) May 5, 2018 - They always come crawling back, don't they? This morning, I tried one last time. I rolled over in bed and dialed Lisa's Kitchen. One ring. "No restaurant ever answers after one ring." Two rings. "Here we go." Three rings. "It's the first warm weekend of the season, they're busy." Four rings. "Don't do this to me, Lisa." Five rings. "Lisa, please, God, no." *click* "It's that time of year again. We'll see you in September!" No you won't, Lisa. I'm sure you have excellent adventures every summer. I'm sure your sandwiches are just as great as advertised. I have no doubt about your culinary skills. But I have to start seeing other restaurants. I can't keep calling you just to be disappointed every time you don't answer me. You won't see me in September. But I'll see you...in my dreams. I live down the street and ate here a couple weeks ago. The food was alright, but nothing impressive. My concern is the owner keeps refrigerated product in his van overnight now that the weather is cooling down. I didn't believe it at first, but I walk my dog every morning and I saw him walk out to his van and get produce and other refrigerated items from his van and carry them into the back of the store. At first I thought maybe he just went to the store and was making multiple trips. So I watched for the van to leave the next morning and it didn't but sure enough, the owner came out and got items from the van! This is completely disgusting. I will never eat here again! read more
