I live just up the hill from Uncle Wong's, so it's super convenient to swing by and pick up some solid Chinese food. There's no indoor seating at the moment--I think they closed it during Covid and never reopened. It'd be great to dine in one day if that changes. I usually call in my order, and the food is always ready quickly. The ladies who work there are incredibly kind and always toss in a few free spring rolls when I order a lot--which is often! My go-to dishes: honey walnut shrimp, combo fried rice, combo chow mein, sesame chicken, chicken wings, black pepper beef, and broccoli beef. Their menu is huge, so there's definitely something for everyone. Honestly, everything I've tried has been tasty, which is why I stick to my favorites. In the days before nearly every type of cuisine suddenly was a finger tap away, there was an essential need to have the phone number for a good Chinese takeout place willing to do deliveries. Remember those days? ...Bueller? Oh yeah, I'm on Yelp. Well, for better or worse, Uncle Wong reminds me of that type of place even though I've never set foot in the place. I was just in the mood for Chinese one stormy night and found the kind of menu I used to see printed on pink paper with a drawing of bamboo on the cover. Remember those? Oh never mind. Great consistent food. My go to spot for good Chinese food. Ambience isn't the best for this place but I personally order takeout.

So I have a stomach bug and I got some wonton soup and hot and sour soup. I tried the wonton soup first because I needed something brothy. The broth was okay, just ok. But the wontons were awful. The wrappers were thick and mushy and it tasted like they had been sitting for a long time. I had the one with veggies. But after half a bowl I put it away. The next day I had the hot and soup soup. The first thing I noticed was how gelatinous it was after several minutes of heating. I ended up adding a little water to it to try to help the consistency. But when I tried the soup, it tasted very sweet and sour. Not so much spicy and didn't seem to have good flavor. I ate a little bit of it before also putting it aside as it wasn't doing any favors for my stomach. (Not on this order) but I often order the wontons and sweet and sour sauce. The sweet and sour sauce looks like it's been expired for a long time. It's not red anymore, it's more brown. And the wontons are almost always stale. I'm under the belief that their food is not fresh and they serve old, reheated food which is not only gross tasting but is dangerous. This place has gone significantly downhill in recent years and I think this will be my last visit. It's just not worth the overpriced disappointment. read more

Usually - - reviews for restaurants are about food, not about non-edible choices a business owner or workers make. However, this is about the little off-leash dog belonging to people associated with the restaurant, first lying on the sidewalk next to a somewhat busy parking lot...with no humans in sight. Then later, the dog was roaming around, with a human in sight, but not 'watching the dog' when the dog almost got into a fight with my dog, who was on a leash. I didn't even see the human at first especially since there was no intervention or even engagement to try and stop what could have been a mess. I might not even make much of a big deal about it - but below, in late April - it's stated that a visitor saw multiple dogs IN the kitchen and people engaging with said dogs, with gloved hands. Despite this being a potentially unsafe or sanitary situation for foodstuff, more importantly, to me at least, it's not a good or safe situation for the dogs they keep in or near the restaurant. Not ok. As far as the food: I've only eaten takeout from Uncle Wong's once and it was unmemorable. read more

The won ton soup is no longer any good. The won tons are doughy the meat inside is unseasoned. The to go order no longer packs the broth separately. The people were very nice. They make their hot and sour soup nicely! Their bbq pork fried rice is quite addictive. It's one of those dishes that you try and somehow keep munching away at. Add hot sauce and it's bomb diggity. Sweet and sour pork was spot on. The sauce is a bit pasty and batter flavor could have been more deep fried. I prefer the pork bone sweet and sour style more than the boneless. Seafood pan fried noodles lacked freshness and adequate seafood pieces and sauce needed to be more on the thin broth side rather than thick. Chow noodles were good. I spent $50 chicken chow mein house fried rice w/ chicken 2 baby shrimp and diced grey meat that I'm guessing was chicken and salt and pepper dry fried ribs here's the issue I've purchased this before and I've never had an issue the dry fried ribs salty as hell and it was not crispy it was maybe 3 pork chops cut in 3 strips the only thing good was the chow mein the fried rice had a weird smell even after I added soy sauce and chili oil what a waste of money smh read more

A real let down. First, no free rice with the entree. So you're paying $12 for a pile of chicken and you need to remember to add rice to your order or you are out of luck. I got jalapeno chicken... Weird. Everything was supernaturally slimy with a thick brown flavorless ooze. Large chunks of pepper and onion made for difficult eating, as I had to cut them up to even make them edible. The chicken was slimy and rubbery in this dish. Not very appealing. The sesame chicken was more like red dyed popcorn chicken with a few stale sesame seeds in the bottom of a box. Just odd. Horrible. I paid $90 just to throw it all away. They have DOGS running around the kitchen and restaurant. Dogs in plural! As the lady serving our food was wearing gloves and one of the chihuahua dogs started barking she grabbed the dog with her gloves on, threw it in the hallway and continued grabbing and closing our food containers with the same gloves! We were excited to see Hung Tao Yee Won Ton on the menu. The thick soup has deep fried won tons. This is a favorite of ours from, the long closed Golden Dynasty restaurant in El Cerrito. We drive from Petaluma to SF to get a great version in SF. But, these folks have some work to do on the won tons. They are over fried and not stuffed enough. The soup is okay. The broth has a nice egg white injection that thickens the chicken broth. I think there were too many green onions, too. The menu looks good. Great, fresh Chinese food in El Cerrito with always polite and prompt service. Their chow mein always tastes like it just came off a nice smoking wok and anything fried tastes like it just came out of the fryer seconds before you took it home. The General Tso's chicken was fresh, chicken still juicy, and the sauce was like a nice sticky glaze coating each piece. I like to substitute chow mein instead of rice for the lunch special, which costs extra but is worth it because the noodles are so good and because the lunch prices are really inexpensive. I've also had the Broccoli with spicy garlic sauce and the wonton soup. The wontons taste homemade and perfectly tender in a flavorful broth and I like that they put some bbq pork in there too! The only thing I would change is the broccoli- it was nice and crunchy and the sauce was delicious but just for my own personal taste: it was too much sauce, but I would still order it again I would just have it with some rice. The lady who's always up front got it dialed in! She's fast and friendly and works the door,phone, register and serves all at the same time with ease and grace. We have been getting food from Uncle Wongs for years but this will be our last order. The Hunan Beef was ok but the order was only enough to feed my 2 toddlers. The entree portions have been shrunk down so small that it would take 3 orders to equal an ordinary portion. Yet the price is $15. I'm not exaggerating, the container was so small it fit in the palm of my hand. Literally a few bites of food. At least the minuscule amount of hunan beef we got did taste good. Unlike the egg flower soup that was so disgusting that we tossed it out. The broth consisted of luke warm water with cold cabbage and tofu added without any egg. It was unlike any egg flower soup I've encountered in my lifetime. We were forced to order a second dinner from a different restaurant in order to feed the family. Something I cannot afford to do in this economy. Our family will be searching for a new Chinese takeout place after being loyal customers for over a decade. read more

The food is usually pretty greasy, they use spaghetti thickness noodles in the chow mein (I like vermicelli style), and none of the sauces really stand out. Almost all the meat is battered and fried, then sauce added. Plus side is that they don't overdo the sauces, veggies are crispy not mushy and you get a lot of food. We generally order some version of chicken, green beans, mu shu pork, and chow mein and it costs about $45. They're convenient and consistent but just not the best cooking I've ever had. read more

Finally! Been searching for solid Chinese in the area since we moved back to SF. Tried many; either over priced, too bland, to greasy, too expensive or all of the above. I was loosing faith. One day I had to venture to an ATT store and dropped into Panda Express. Damn it! It was freakin great! I started to question my tastes in Chinese cuisine. Was chain store strip mall fare going to be my best bet when I crave Chinese? My novice attempts with my seasoned wok at home going to be the only viable alternative? I know what I like. Flavor, texture, ingredients not over cooked slopping in bland sauces. I like spicy, but when there are more peppers in the dish than the protein well that is just plain wrong. The wok fried items; light crispy on outside, tender and not over cooked and rubbery on the inside. I don't think it's too much to ask? So when we were giving up hope and desperate to probe that flavor palette uniquely Chinese: not Thai, not Burmese, not Vietnamese... we turned again to YELP for guidance. Frankly the reviews were all over the map. A couple of bad ones... well those folks injuries were self inflicted. But our contractor likes it as his favorite. and a couple of my Yelp peeps shared how to best navigate this place. So following that we ordered on line using Yelp. On arrival one table not looking too happy were boxing up getting ready to leave, but as I suspected most folks get it to go. 3 orders ahead of mine were picked up. The lady was sweet and pleasant to all patrons, some of which obvious regulars. Ordered shrimp and veggies-awesomely tender veggies not over cooked plenty of shrimp in a briny, spicy sauce. Ok good start. The highlight was salt and pepper prawns. These babies were tight! Lightly batter fried to perfection and dunked in that sweet salty, savory accompanying sauce.... umami your mommy! Ordered brown rice which was good by itself. A clear indication these folks know rice. The best part it was $22 bucks! Finally! My snob elite pretentious bias against faster food chains in strip malls is not threatened. My desire to help the non corporate local business thrive no longer an issue.
