This is a great bar, with great drinks and great food. Their happy hour specials are amazing and they also have live piano every Saturday and Sunday! The bartenders are down to earth--real true south attitude (not the fake southern charm kind but the "I've got your back and will kick it in the dirt when you're down and cheers you when you're up" kind) It's New Orleans "themed" but truly a wonderful addition and neighborhood spot for all the Chinatown and east LA residents. I would come here all the time if I could... or if I still had that kind of life, which I think a lot of us don't anymore. We went on an early Thursday evening, so it was pretty dead, which honestly I liked. But on the weekends it turns into a piano bar, so if you want the full experience that's probably when you should come. My partner wanted to check this place out, and I had absolutely no idea what I was walking into. I used to live in Savannah, Georgia, and walking in immediately reminded me of bars back there. I've missed places like this. I didn't even bother looking at the menu. I asked one question: "Do you have fried pickles?" "And are they spears?" Check. And check. Instantly passed my very low bar test for a place like this, and they tasted exactly how I wanted them to. Both bartenders were great too. Easy to shoot the shit with. Although I will say... I kind of wished there were just a couple old guys sitting in the corner quietly brooding over their drinks. They also have pickled eggs, which I honestly can't remember seeing at another bar in LA. And if pickled pig's feet are your thing... they've got those too. They've never been my thing. The only thing that really pulled me out of the atmosphere was the giant ring light by the bathroom. I guess you have to keep the younger crowd entertained these days if a live piano player isn't enough. There's also the market next door, which is owned by the same people and looks like it's full of good stuff, but it was closed when we visited. Now I loooooove me some NOLA every day of the week...it's my favorite place to eat! So when we saw this place on Yelp, we had to try! I'm not even gonna lie, I saw this place from the outside and thought I was going to have to fight for my life. LOL! I'm a city girl and I can't help that it looked sketch on the outside. Blame my city upbringing, moving forward. LOL Now when we stepped inside, isssssa vibe! We sat the bar and immediately started ordering food. We let the bartender know that we don't drink and she offered to make these ice cold tea drinks and she killed it! Whatever she made, refreshed the hell out of me and I loved it! She was pretty chill and made us feel welcome. There was another gentleman there that took our food orders and I'm not sure if he was another bartender or the owner, but he was pretty chill, too. We didn't want to be in the way at the bar with all of our food while everyone was having a good time, so we moved to a table. People were having cold ones and dancing. Came here a couple weeks ago after being near Chinatown and seeing it on Yelp. I love themed bars and I was missing a NOLA-style bar after the Little Easy in DTLA closed. The interior is casual with low lighting. The bartender was super knowledgeable and attentive. I asked if he could make me a Ramos Gin Fizz even though it wasn't on their current menu and he did, which I SO appreciated, and it was absolutely creamy and delicious. My husband got an Absinthe Frappe which was refreshing and herbal. My second drink was the Real Rum Runner, which was delightfully fruity without being cloyingly sweet. All drinks were well balanced and pretty strong. Will definitely be back a little earlier in the evening next time because their food menu looks awesome. read more

Local bar with New Orleans cooking on the menu. Saw they had charbroiled oysters and how could I resist? So we went over the other day to grab a couple drinks and indulge! The bar is located in Chinatown, only about two miles from me, so eat to get to. It is self seating, so head inside, grab a menu and order at the bar. We started with cocktails, as always, trying a Rum Runner and Mai Tai. Both were very good, nice flavors coming through as well as the rum notes. We also tried a Hurricane which didn't feel like a traditional hurricane which has passion fruit, but it was tasty all the same. For food we ordered the charbroiled oysters. Having had the chargrilled oysters at Acme Oyster House in NOLA, I've been looking for something on that level in LA. These weren't quite that, but no one does it like Acme. That being said, they were still good. If they can make it with that melty bubbling cheese, is would got so hard! The shrimp and crawfish etoufee was really lacking in terms of the shrimp and crawfish, but the flavor was decent. And the half and half Po'Boy, with shrimp and oysters, had a nice crunch in the deep fried seafood, bread was good and the homemade remoulade was flavorful. It did feel like something was missing with the Po'Boy though. Maybe more dressing as the deep fried batter was abundant. Over all, nice NOLA style offering in Los Angeles with fabulous drinks. If you haven't had charbroiled oysters before, definitely give them a shot as they are unlike the traditional oyster you'll get elsewhere. read more

I never knew how much I needed a place like this! I love New Orleans and unfortunately not a lot of place here in LA that remind you of the Crescent City. This place does, they even have a live feed of Bourbon St. I love the down south cocktails that are made just right, only one missing is a hand grenade haha. Walk in to Spacemen 3 playing, immediately order a I Ain't Mad Atcha po'boy and heaven's own gumbo, margaritas (because we can't be trusted with Hurricanes, much as we want one), then settle back to revel in televised Westminster dog show (Rest in Power Catherine O'Hara) and gaze at a full color cardboard cutout of a gator. Heck yeah! I found my new home away from home! A friend I haven't seen in a while suggested we come here. She said, "I know the perfect place." Perfect is right! The minute I walked in, I felt like I was transported to a cozy New Orleans' neighborhood bar - everything from the French doors, décor, tin ceiling, & lively jazz music over the speakers. When I mentioned how much this place reminded me of NOLA to bartender Nico he said he agreed because he is from there and when he found out this place was opening, he applied for a job. Evangeline opened a few months ago as an extension of Little Jewel, which I love. In fact, the food comes from Little Jewel, which is also a bonus. The cocktail menu features NOLA classics such as Ramos Gin Fizz, Vieux Carre, & Brandy Milk Punch. I ordered a French 75, which was perfect, and some Hush Puppies, which tasted authentic including the house Remoulade. My friend had a Cajun Mary and the Red Beans and Rice. She asked the other bartender for some Crystal. The look on her face told us she wasn't from New Orleans. In NOLA, Crystal is the Hot Sauce of choice. In Los Angeles it means something else. LOL! Needless to say, this was the perfect spot! The food was delicious. The cocktails were great. The bartenders are friendly, and the ambience is fantastic. Bartender with hipster bangs will treat you like garbage if you're female. She will look at you like a confused psycho if you ask her for a regular Bloody Mary and not the one with 15 things in it. She will act like a B, turn around and will only pay attention to the men for very obvious tipping reasons ( female bartenders know this). BUT THE WORST THING? For the love of god, Swamp, remove me from your marketing texts. They will sell your info and bombard you with marketing texts. You hit report spam and they keep on changing numbers and sending texts. FFS swamp, stop or you're going to have some issues with reporting. As a child who grew up in restaurants because my mom was a server her whole life, I find myself to be hopelessly nice to staff and of course tipped the hipster bang bartender ( don't know her name but I had those bangs in 2016 so that's just her name to me) I was exceedingly nice and this bartender doubled down. The Evangeline Swamp Room is a newly opened dive bar that is located in Chinatown. It is an establishment that is connected to the Little Jewel of New Orleans, making it a perfect stop for both food and cocktail fanatics. Some of the drinks we ordered were the Original Sazerac, One Mint Julep, French Quarter Frozen Irish Coffee, and the 1918 Grasshopper. All of them were refreshing and tasted very nostalgic from our trip to New Orleans. The Mint Julep had the perfect amount of mint to it, making it a very refreshing drink for a bourbon. The Sazerac was my husband's favorite cocktail due to its perfect balance of sweetness and Absinthe. The drink that sold me specifically was the French Quarter Irish Coffee. The best way to describe it is a Starbucks frappuccino with alcohol. The description doesn't do much justice, so I recommend tasting this amazing drink yourself! In terms of the food, we ordered the Charbroiled Oysters Du Jour, Bread Pudding, and Fried Catfish Po'Boy. All of them were also delicious, especially the Po'Boy. The Charbroiled Oysters Du Jour was also very tasty, making it a perfect dish for any oyster lover. Overall, there is nothing to hate about this new establishment. Had a Cool ass link with fellow Yelper Nikki B and she put me on to the French 75 with cognac!! Kind of reminiscent of a sidecar (which is one of my favorite cocktails) with bubbles! I have not been to Little Jewel in a long time. My friend treated me to dinner for my birthday at the Evangeline Swap Room next door. Little Jewel expanded from the shop to a bar, and the food is good. We had the catfish po'boy, red beans & rice, bread pudding, and a couple of cocktails. I would love to go back and just enjoy hanging out at the bar and enjoying the food. They're really nice and attentive, especially when it comes to food questions. read more

I was loking to kill time before heading to Chung King Road for an art opening. There's a dearth of actual bars in Chinatown (other than Grand Star) anymore. A lightbulb went off & my friend and I remembered Evangeline! Hard to find until you find it, then you're transported to New Orleans until you stumble out. The drinks? Authentic, strong, true. Might be a bit sweet but they'll lay off the syrup if you ask nicely. Better yet-- the food from owner's next door Little Jewel is top notch and meant to be shared. This spot just opened up on December 2024. But when you walk in, they made it look dated like it would in NOLA. Though it did have an odor of humid wet floors. Not great if you are trying to dine or drink here. But you do get used to it after a while though. They are connected to the The Little Jem of New Orleans. We ordered food through the app and brought it over to the bar. There are bar seats and also 5-6 tables to sit at. We ordered the Hurricane and Frozen Irish Coffee. Wasn't a fan of the Hurricane as it tasted like medicine. Not sure if it was the spirits used or maybe the fruit punch mix, but it wasn't the greatest. The Irish Coffee was better and looks to be pre-made and just poured in to a glass. The staff are nice and kept on checking in on us. As the only bar in Chinatown, there really isn't any competition for them. But I think it's a good spot to grab a beer or two if you are in the area. read more

Came here on Saturday for an event and could not have had a better experience. Food was great, drinks were delicious, place was clean and staff was amazing. It's obvious that the management really cares about their business, but also the community. One of their bartenders, Nat, was super attentive. I made sure to keep going back to her because of that and because her drinks were just so delicious. There were DJs that night and the dance floor was PACKED. Really good vibes all around. They also had a photo booth which I always appreciate. Perhaps best of all, there is a parking lot right next door with FREE parking after 7. Pretty unheard of in LA, but definitely one of the many reasons I'll be coming back-- planning on checking out their karaoke on Wednesdays. Had a great time here, just running solo! I will say the location is a bit sketch, but didn't have any issues with kooks then, but totally lock your car and watch your back. The drinks where pretty good, I don't recommend the A&T (Absinthe and Tonic) if your not familiar with the taste, which I wasn't and I regretted it. Although the buzz was fast afterwards! All around, I think what really sales this place, is the atmosphere and the service! The people who work seem to really care about the customers experience and the vibe is so chill and calm. We lived in New Orleans for 12 years, so about once a year we visit this place for a little touch of NOLA. We've eaten at Little Jewel of New Orleans before, but this was out first visit to Evangeline Swamp Room. The decor is perfect. Sazeracs were perfect. Mint julep not so much- tasted like a mix. I ordered gumbo but they were out so I had a shrimp po-boy, hold the mayo. I picked out the bits of raw onion that would never be included in New Orleans. Also had a side of fried okra with too much batter for my taste. Conclusion- come here for the drinks but choose simple ones. We took the Metrolink from Upland and are taking home some Zapp's potato chips. They didn't have any andouille today. read more

Fantastic place. My wife is from New Orleans -- I've been there three times -- and we've been to Little Jewel many times. Now that the owners have opened up the Evangeline next door to it she was jonesing to try it out. What a place! The furnishings, food, drinks, music made you feel like you were transported back to the French Quarter. I had the blackened shrimp Po' boy which was perfection. My wife had the fried catfish Po' boy which she says "was absolutely delish." Topped off with an Abita stout for me and the Abita Amber for her. I have now been to Evangeline twice and both times we've had a FANTASTIC time! The food is delicious, the drinks are on point, and the service is authentic and welcoming. The last time we went, we ordered the crawfish boil and as native Angelenos we wanted to learn how to properly break down a crawfish. They graciously brought out their resident Louisianan to give us a demonstration. We all had a laugh at our ignorance but by the end we were pros Come to watch a game and have some great nosh. This is definitely an up and coming bar, BUT I hope to return after some changes/improvements. 1) Limited drink menu, and not many top liquor options. Some of the drinks like the hurricane tasted pre-made and overly sweet. 2) The food is very so so to me. The fritters have the potential to be delicious, but it's very dense and the rice isn't soft or fluffy on the inside. All of the sauces are the same - remoulade. The crispy okra had absolutely no seasoning and tasted slimy. Lastly, the shrimp po boy was good but all of the breading fell off the shrimp. My friends and I found this gem on a Sunday while taking in the Thai night market down the street. We first checked out the Little Gem of New Orleans and ordered a few appetizers & desserts such as the hush puppies, fried pickles, bread pudding, beignets, and coffee. The owner was kind enough to show us the new bar that was connected next to the restaurant and what a pleasant experience. They were able to bring the food over as we decided to sit at the bar and of course we had to try a cocktail so we tried their hurricane. The hurricane was delicious with the right balance of sweetness and the depth of the alcohol. The bar itself opened a couple weeks ago, apparently and has a lot of details that screams New Orleans. Our bartender was so friendly and kept checking in on us. He made us feel very welcomed. He, as well as the other staff were so hospitable and overall it was just such a great experience for our first time there. You can tell they are hard working, creative and just plain kind individuals with great energy. We for sure want to come back and try their other drinks as well as more delicious food next-door!
