After reading some of the other reviews I decided to give Little Richard's a try. I had their chicken and ribs combo with their Brunswick stew. Excellent! I visited Mt. Airy this past weekend for the Andy Griffith nostalgia, and as I do whenever I visit a new place, I hit up Yelp to find a local restaurant to eat at. Little Richard's is the 1st restaurant that comes up when doing a generic restaurant search for Mt. Airy. As a disclaimer, I am a serious BBQ cook and have even done BBQ competitions, so I tend to be a little critical of BBQ restaurants. Little Richard's advertises themselves as "lexington style BBQ", but please do not be fooled. This place is nowhere near the quality of Lexington, NC mainstays like Lexington Barbecue or The Barbecue Center. The meat was good and had a smoky taste for the most part. They don't ask what type of meat you want (white or brown) like they do at lexington bbq joints. I prefer the outside brown meat for the smokier taste and crispy texture, but the portion primarily consisted of the inner white meat. The few bites of brown meat I had were good, and had a legit smoky taste. Where I was most disappointed was in the side dishes. The green beans looked and tasted like they came from a can. The Mac-n-Cheese tasted EXACTLY like Easy Mac. As a former poor college student, I used to eat alot of Easy Mac and their stuff tasted the exact same. The hushpuppies portion was HUGE (at least 20), but the taste wasn't that good. They tasted like your average generic hushpuppy that one might expect to find at Captain D's. Overall, I'm not trying to trash Little Richard's. The locals who eat there regularly are going to keep eating there regularly regardless of what anyone posts on Yelp. However, I'm mostly directing this review towards the tourists who may be visiting Mt. Airy and are looking for a great local restaurant to try. If you're in the mood for BBQ, this place is decent, but don't expect an amazing BBQ meal that you can't find anywhere else. If you go to Mt. Airy for the nostalgia, you may as well stick to main street for your meal and eat at one of the places that holds historic value. read more

Little Richard's is one of my favorite chain BBQ places in NC. I typically head to the one in Winston, but the Mt. Airy location was closer on my way in. It's a lovely building much more "mountain" themed than the other location. Staff was great, food was delicious as always. read more

Hands down some of the best bbq we've ever had. We recently fined here after evacuating to mt airy (hurricane Florence) the service was just as wonderful as the food and great prices. Picked up 2 meals yesterday eve. BB Ribs and barbecue and another entree of 'smoked chicken'. The first entree was marginal. The Smoked Chicken was awful. The marinated chicken tenders are never a disappointment just like their BBQ. The food is serviced in a timely manner so it is aways fresh hot and delicious and is never dryed out from sitting under a heat lamp. The servers make you feel like you are their main priority making sure your drink is never empty and your needs are met. I recommend the Carolina gold dipping sauce it's a sweet and tangy mustard based sauce it's good on the BBQ and the chicken as well. Two times I've been for lunch, and two times the service has been lackluster. The first time I waited 10 minutes to be seated. Sounds normal, perhaps? I was the only one there! Visiting from Chicago, we were on the quest for some Carolina BBQ and this is where everyone suggested. We are so glad we went here! This place was fabulous! You must get the enormous, B.B.Q. pulled pork with cheese baked potato. Fantastic! We also had the bbq chicken, ribs, potato salad and hush puppies. We are in the area visiting and looked to Yelp for good BBQ takeout. It certainly exceeded our expectations!! We started with their chicken wings, which were HUGE and full of flavor! My husband had the beef brisket and pork ribs. It was accompanied by hush puppies (seriously there had to be 3# in there!!), bbq coleslaw and baked beans. It was so much food, he has plenty of leftovers!! I chose a side salad (HUGE!!) which was accompanied by another 3# (lol!) of hush puppies and a pulled pork sandwich. It was really good, too!!! This is a place you couldn't possibly leave feeling hungry or even think about dessert!! (Their dessert menu looked very enticing though!!). We highly recommend Little Richards! read more

This was my first visit, but my wife and neighbor go here every so often. First off I tried the smoked wings, with the sauce on the side. The wings were great without the sauce, even better with it. We got the BBQ plate. I am pretty picky about BBQ and this BBQ made the grade. Everything was prepared and seasoned well. The service was great. Something else I noticed during this time of COVID. There are very few BBQ places where the meat is always lean, but I've consistory had great BBQ here. The food is delicious, including the fries and hush puppies, which are perfectly cooked every time and never greasy. They have two styles to choose from -- vinegar based and tomato based, and I love the hickory style BBQ sauce. If you're in the mood for something other than pork, their grilled chicken is tender, juicy and flavorful. The portions are huge, especially for the price. I picked up a call in order as I have many times and once again I get home and part of the order is not there. But instead of letting in letting it go I called in to make the Mgr aware but she was nonchalant about it and didn't really seem to care. She said oh well give me your name and I'll give you a sandwich the next time you're in. I would give this place 2 stars if not for the sides. I liked the turnip greens, slaw and hush puppies. I did not like the ribs or chopped pork. Neither had a good smoke flavor. Neither sauce was especially good perhaps it's better for lunch? I would find put when the ribs are fresh and come then. I don't think it would make much difference. It's just not good BBQ. read more
