Thank you, Little Vietnam, for stopping the self-gaslighting I had going on. After a couple lackluster experiences in other places (to be fair, of different categories), I was worried my palate was catastrophically fried, and in need of a plain chicken and rice reset. I started my experience with the crab rangoons. These had that little home-made touch, as they weren't quite the precision engineered, very crisp ones that many other places have. The wonton was a little softer, and seemed almost as if it could have been pan fried - not a negative, just a statement of fact. Where I do want to give them credit is regarding the very tasty filling! For my main, I had the Combo Pho. The broth on this was immensely rich, flavorful, and savory. At the same time, it remained balanced and was not oversalted. All the meats within were cooked well, and the noodles were pleasant as well. The bean sprouts, basil, jalapenos, and lime, not to mention the sauces, can be used to adjust or add flavor to your heart's content, though it is perfect as is. IIRC, this is a family recipe! When it comes to the service, it was friendly, polite, welcoming, and helpful. Can't be beat for a small, family run business like this. There's just one thing I am slightly less than thrilled about: their prices, while not unreasonable, are on the higher side of average. However, I think economies of scale are at play, and I feel as though I got more than my money's worth considering how delectable and filling everything was. Final verdict: While as a matter of value and personal preference, I may pass on the rangoons next time, the Pho is an absolute 10/10, and I can't wait to return as the weather becomes colder and hot soup hits so much harder. read more

Located a couple of minutes from the CTA red line, Little Vietnam helps make the winters here a little bit more bearable. With all the below freezing days Chicago had been having, pho hit the spot for my friends and me. The broth did taste sweeter than I'm used to having, but everything came together beautifully. After being denied due to a crazy long line for Paper Machete my friends and I decided to warm away our blues with some pho. We knew we could just go up the block to Argyle Ave but that also seemed to be pretty busy for a Saturday afternoon so we did a quick search and came across Little Vietnam just a little further north and drove that way. It's a great spot with a wide variety of Vietnamese dishes at reasonable prices. The combination pho I ordered had a nice broth with a decent amount of sliced meat and noodles. The shrimp spring rolls I ordered as an appetizer were also really good and I liked that all of the vegetables in the rolls and as toppings for the pho tasted crispy and fresh. My friend ordered a pork banh mi along with his soup that looked really good and it was big enough that he was able to take half of it home for later. The staff were very friendly. They did say that they could only take cash or Zelle payments at the time due to their card reader not working but that was not a problem for us. The inside has a very relaxed feel. Our waiter offered us a free fried banana dessert which was very appreciated. Next time I'd probably order some coffee to go with it. read more

Came by here for dinner on a Saturday night in October and to our surprise it was pretty empty. Been wanting to try this place for a while as it's across the street from my barber and I always noticed it. The lady who served us was suuuuper friendly! So nice the entire time. We ordered eggs rolls to start and then combo pho orders each as our entrees. The egg rolls were small to be honest. There were three of them, but for the price-point, I feel like they skimped out on size or at least the inside contents of an egg roll. They tasted good though, however. The pho on the other hand we both really liked. The broth was excellent. The noodles were cooked perfectly as well. Our server kept making sure to refill our waters and also brought us chili oil and sauce containers per our request with no hesitation. TL;DR: BEST VEGAN PHO IN CHICAGO I've been coming to Little Vietnam for a decade and I keep coming back because they have the BEST VEGAN PHO in the city. Friends have been really excited to take me to their favorite pho spots saying these other places have the best pho and I'm always left wishing we had gone to Little Vietnam instead. Pho is all about the BROTH and too many places make their vegan pho super boring and flavorless (or worse). Little Vietnam's vegan pho broth has a complex flavor with many notes combining in perfect harmony. The last bite is just as delicious as the first. It's like goldilocks soup! The service is always quick, friendly, and welcoming too. I feel like tourists might walk past this spot because it's kind of a hole in the wall and doesn't look trendy and is frequently empty. But I think Little Vietnam's to-go game is strong though because the locals definitely know what's up and they've been in business for over 10 years. Ordered a pho dac biet, papaya salad, lemongrass chicken stir fry, and a mango freeze. Everything was tasty except for the mango freeze, there was not enough mango and just too ice/watery. We ordered take out here one night we were feeling lazy and didn't know what to eat. Pho is always my go-to meal if I'm not craving anything in particular. I've been wanting to try Little Vietnam for a while because they're so close to home. I ordered my usual pho tai and I'll say the broth is nice and flavorful. What was disappointing are the serving sizes. We were probably given 4-5 slices of meat (half of a regular size portion at other restaurants). But it was nice they gave us the regular fixins so I could bulk up my pho. Maybe I'll try a combo or just ask for extra meat next time but the pho prices are already on the pricer side as well. PHO CHAY. If you don't eat the meat, this is all you need to know. It is hands down, THE BEST vegetarian pho around. Once, Little Vietnam was closed and we had to go to another place around the corner. I was very disappointed with the other place's flavorless broth and ratio of too-many-noodles-to-vegetables. Little Vietnam, on the other hand, gets it just right. I love the springy, lightly fried tofu and perfectly tender veggies, but the broth is the star. It has such a complex flavor from what must be an expansive array of spices. We were also told the broth is simmered for many hours, and the staff are clearly proud of it! As far as I can tell, it is also vegan. I can't imagine any dairy being in such a clean broth. Truthfully, I am afraid to ask because I do not want to stop eating this pho chay. It is generally the only thing I order now. But overall, the food is just mouth wateringly delicious! I used to eat meat and really loved the bun noodle salad with grilled pork. People who know, know. This is the place. You'll see couples, big families, and single people all there for the food and excellent service. I haven't been here in a little bit but I was missing this pho today so I wanted to take the time to review. This used to be my favorite place while I was in grad school at Northwestern. I loved the pho and everything I ever tried there. The staff was always so friendly and always able to help me make sure what I was getting was vegan! I was really expecting really good food for 4.5 stars in the city. But it was very disappointing. We got the banh mi with grilled pork, banh xeo, egg rolls and the combo pho. The egg rolls were expensive for how small they were. The banh xeo was fine but no lettuces to wrap. The banh mi was ok. Not very flavorful. The pho was good. The soup was good. But not as good as the places on argyle. Overall, disappointing and I would not recommend. The service was great. Very friendly but the food does not make up for it. read more

Food was amazing! BYOB. Possibly the weirdest service I have had in a long time. The waiter seemed to be very busy on the phone with take out orders. He took our order and then came back to our table like he had never been there and tried to start our order again. They have a Yelp coupon up for free egg roll, and he told us, that hasn't been good for a year or more. We ordered the egg roll anyway, it never arrived, but was still on our bill and then had to be removed. Giving 3 stars anyway because the food made it worth it and I am forgiving with how much he seemed to be dealing with. I can't fully express how dissatisfied I felt after stepping out of this restaurant. At first the waitress promised the food would be great. She kept insisting on soup so I went ahead and opted for Seafood noodle soup. What I receive as far from what the menu displayed. The soup barely had 3 shrimps, a crumb of what she called octopus, and imitation crab that tasted stale and grainy. The only generous part was the broth, it had massive amounts of it. Coupled with tea and basic tiny egg rolls, my bill was nearly $35!! Extremely overpriced for what was promised but never delivered. But what an actual tasty Vietnamese egg roll with meat and the whole sha-bang. It's been awhile since I had my own culture food so of course I went for the pho. Delicious food, we have now gone twice. Bahn mi, vermicelli, spring rolls- everything so far has been yummy- we will be back!

The free fried egg rolls with yelp check-in was probably the best thing we had here. They were really good -- finely shredded cabbage and ground meat filling were well seasoned; the egg roll wrap was perfectly crispy/flaky and didn't taste greasy at all. The meats in the beef combo pho was good, but broth flavor is slightly on the sweeter side and is not as beefy as Tank's (same problem I have with Lily's Pho) and the noodles were slightly over cooked. And no beef tendon options to be added is a downside as well. The veggies that go into the soup could be more generous. Clay pot catfish sauce was overly sweet, but the catfish was cooked to the right temperature and the white rice was very fluffy and high quality. After scraping off the sauce, the fish tasted better. I went in with too high of expectations based on the overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews (which I now realize are mostly are for vegetarian options that I didn't try). As a result, I felt a bit salty spending $40 here for lunch for two entrees after tax and tip. read more

Stopped in with an out of town friend and one of her friends for lunch. It was so delicious! Everything tasted fresh. The vegetable were perfectly cooked and well flavored. They have an awesome lunch deal from 11-3 during the week. It starts with an appetizer and soup then you get your entree. It's all included for the price of your entree. Vietnamese restaurants can vary greatly and I have been seeking a new favorite since Dalat in Montreal was lost to new UQAM buildings and the Quartier des Spectacles for outdoor events. After trying many far and wide, it was Little Vietnam in Chicago's Edgewater, on Bryn Mawr! Starting with shrimp skewers as an appetizer, I had the Jasmine Rice Platter (Com Thit Nuong) for my main course while my companion picked the Vermicelli Rice Noodle Bowl (Bun Thit Nuong). Our server was a very nice lady who was on top of her game (orders by memory, no pen nor paper nor pad nor phone!) and the service was like clockwork, at all the right moments. Yep, the hype is true. As a vegetarian, I have a love/hate relationship with most Asian cuisine. I love and crave it daily, but so often it tastes like fish, which is about the most disgusting thing possible for me. Vietnamese is particularly tough in this regard - the sauces are all fishy, and fried appetizers share the same grease as seafood stuff so it's really hard to escape it. I've tried a few things from here, and the reason I'm posting this is mainly because of the vegetarian pho (pho chay). It is, hands down, the best Asian soup I've ever had. I don't know what's in the broth - for all I know it does have fish or something. But if so, I can't taste it. They include such a wonderful balance of broccoli, cabbage, straw mushroom, noodles, carrots, tofu and accompaniments. It's lovely to dine in, but remarkably, the pho mixes well at home and is almost as good in take out form. The veggie pho is SO filing. I can rarely finish it in one sitting. I've also had the veggie banh mi with avocado added, and it's definitely one of the best banh mi I've ever had. Also great: The spring rolls chay. I have tasted hints of fish at times, but it's not too bad. The mixed vegetables with tofu entree is also delicious, as is the rice. A word about their tofu: Perfect. So many places have good food yet have disgusting tofu. This place gets it right. It's fried but not too fried, slightly crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. It's cooked perfectly. One odd thing: They serve this dish with a side salad, which is lettuce, cucumbers, and carrots. But there is no dressing on it. I've asked for a side of dressing, but all they have is fish sauce. So it's sort of a waste of salad. I got some ginger miso to keep at home for when I order this, otherwise I feel perplexed by it. A little cucumber salad in vinaigrette would be magical instead. I tasted fish on/in the veggie egg rolls, and the sweet and sour sauce is fishy too. They're also very, very greasy. I wish they had a smaller veggie soup option, and maybe one more type of veggie appetizer, but what they do have is outstanding. The service is superb, and the place is quaint and inviting.
