Pre-pandemic! Visited this place a few times during my recent trips to Auburn, CA and I've become quite a fan. The owners are super nice and hospitable. And their food is fresh and delicious. My boyfriend loves coming here as he doesn't get to have authentic Chinese food as often so visits here are a treat. The place is bright and spacious, and overall a great ambiance for date night! Service has always been good during my previous experiences. I live in NY at the moment, so I'm none too sure when I'll be able to return to CA, nor can I really shed any new information to their covid-19 safety measures at this time, but what I can tell you is that if they're offering take out or delivery, please don't hesitate in supporting this local business!! Liu Mandarin is the most darling mom and pop Chinese restaurant in downtown Auburn. My friend and I were visiting and craving something Chinese, so when we found this spot on Yelp we knew we had to check it out. Located in the old town auburn area there is minimal street parking during dinner rush but we got lucky a snagged a spot not far from the restaurant. I was also pleasantly surprised that for such an old western-ish kind of vibe the city gives how modern and cute this restaurant was on the inside. The atmosphere here was super comfortable and welcoming. We were seated right away and the restaurant was a little less then half full. Our orders were taken right away and everyone was super friendly during our entire dining experience. Definitely family vibes here and good service. The food was a solid 4 stars. Everything was tasty and presented well. They also have a much larger menu then I would ever have expected so you definitely can find something here to satisfy everyone cravings. We shared the pork dumplings, sweet and sour shrimp, potstickers, and chow mein. The portion sizes here are appropriate to the pricing. Valentine's 2020, we were in the mood for Chinese and wanted to go some place new and this popped up. We were the only patrons for lunch, this should've been a sign but we had our hearts set on giving this place a shot. The restaurant is clean and modern. There is a giant bar in the dining area. There was an older lady and younger man making dumplings at the bar. The man turned out to be our server also. I have to say that there wasn't any friendly service from the get go. No interaction whatsoever?! I mean, heck, if you didn't want business, put a "Closed" sign at the door?!? WTH? We wanted to order other menu items but we were so uncomfortable and felt as if we were putting our server out?! Not much interaction whatsoever. I ordered the chow mein and dumplings. Hubs ordered fried rice, orange chicken, and chow main lunch. *fried rice-decent, good flavor *hot sour soup-great *chow mein-good but very oily *pork dumplings-had better at the hot food to go in a grocery store *orange chicken-very dry, tasted old like it was leftovers from night before We were really hoping that with the high yelp rating this place would knock our socks off, but it was super disappointing. Plus the server/dumpling maker, he brought our food/drinks out with doughy hands etc, and he proceeds to make dumplings. Puts a bad taste in your mouth. After lunch, we walked around old Auburn and noticed that there were lots of dining choices in this part, and they were all quite busy. Other than nature trails, this is the main thing bringing me back to Old Auburn. My taste preference is sweet and savory with a strong lean towards sweet. And while I'm a spice weenie, I can appreciate some spice. This place checks all my boxes. Veggie Dumplings (fried): We accidentally got one pork dumpling (which was also very tasty, but if you have strict food policies, you may want to cut into a dumpling to double-check), but the rest were very good vegetable dumplings. They use egg in their recipe, but otherwise it's a typical tofu and chives mixture. I wasn't a huge fan of dumplings until I found places that made their own dough, and made it a little thicker than store-bought ones. This place makes excellent dumpling dough. The dumpling size is a perfect two-bites-size (they come out hot, so take your time!). And they come out with a chili oil (maybe with black vinegar and soy sauce?) that is very mild, but flavorful. I'd like to buy a jar if they sell them next time... Meat Bun: Hubba hubba. Their pork mixture is on the sweeter side (which I really like, but maybe not for everyone) and is extremely juicy. The dough to filling ratio is perfect (not too much bun, but enough carbs to satisfy). I scarfed this down so fast - I'm not sure how long the dough would remain fresh for (I find the super fluffy buns can get stale quickly, but this was a bit thinner and denser dough). This is also served with the same chili sauce (I poured it on, the sauce is very good). We cut the bun in half, perfect for two people (but next time I may eat a whole one by myself). Dry Braised String Beans: These might be the best green beans I've ever had. Their sauce is almost like a sweet and sour sauce mixed with their chili oil, but it's not too tangy/zingy and just the right amount of sweet for me. Chinese people are excellent at making vegetable dishes that you crave, and this is definitely one of those dishes. These are served with rice. If you eat outside, just note that the tables are grated, so any food or oil can fall onto your lap very easily! It was not busy on a Saturday afternoon - a beautiful day to eat outside. Miscellaneous: - They have a variety of local beers. - Parking in Old Auburn can be a little tricky to find, but we were able to find some 3 hours spots within about 15 minutes on a late Saturday morning. - Pricing, quantity, and quality is well priced. read more

First time here and will not go again. One of the items we ordered was veggie dumpling. When I ordered, i dint see different size options but the lady who took order dint ask the size either. In my mind I ordered 6 pieces which I saw on the menu. When the dumpling came to the table, there were so many pieces. While she was still there, I asked the lady that I only ordered 6 pieces but she told me i dint mention the size so she chose on her own to bring a large order. I said I only wanted the order that had 6 pieces and I had not even touched the order. She then told me that she will only charge me for 6 pieces and I can start eating. After I started eating, she changed her mind and told me she will take the extra dumplings back, which she did. That was little weird but fine since I was only paying for small order. Then I asked for chiili paste and she said it was "sold out" and did not come back to serve the table at all. I found that to be very rude. Food was average and attitude was far below average. Miscommunication can happen and it is restaurant's responsibility to check for sizes when they take order if there are different sizes, instead of trying to upsell. read more

I like their homemade dumplings, so I have been going there whenever I was in the area. I never liked their unfriendly manners, but I simply liked their dumplings. But I may not go back there any more because I noticed that they have overcharged and shortchanged me last few times. They have a sign saying that you get 5% off if you pay cash, but they don't honor that. Instead, they overcharged and shortchanged me. When I went there this past Tuesday, I ordered lunch menu #1, and it was $12.99. The bill was handwritten and said $14.50. I gave $20 bill, then the cashier/waitress gave me only $4 back. If you choose to eat there, you need to pay close attention to the bill and the change. I like their food, but I don't like how they cheat on me. read more

Located in Auburn, this little place is perfect for a lunch date. We where greated with a smile and the staff was prompt at taking care of us all. Flavors on the food was fresh and the portions where just right. This place was so good! We finished everything! There were 4 of us , we ordered 5 different dishes , the helpings were very small served on dinner plates, They forgot our drinks that we ordered first , one plate of chow main came out first and sat there for awhile, we didn't have plates or utensils, finally we got the rest of the food , still no drinks we had to remind her . Make sure you get and check your receipt!!!! This place rips you off. I placed an order this afternoon, a simple order of regular, pork, dumplings (aka pot stickers), and chicken chow mein. Advised it would take me about 25 minutes to get to them as I was leaving work in Granite Bay, wanted to let them know my eta so they knew they had time to prepare my order, without feeling rushed. It was 4 pm so I assumed they would have some early dinner folks heading in soon, so no pressure for my simple order. I walked in and there was a very angry lady, clearly a worker, scowling at me, no greeting, no nothing. I said hello, told them I was there to pick up a to-go order, and gave my name. The place was empty, aside from what looked like employees on a break. Another lady grabbed my bag and said $32. I'm sorry, $32 for pot stickers and chicken chow mein? I didn't order seafood or anything extra. She said well they're hand made......OK, but $32? I handed her two $20 bills and she proceeded to just look at me. I'm not sure if she expected me to say to keep the change or what. I remained silent and stood there waiting for my change. I worked all day and truly just wanted to get home to enjoy my dinner and relax. No receipt was offered but I also did not ask, that was my mistake. I did grab a menu, simply so I could check the prices as it seemed crazy expensive. $10.99 for the chicken chow mein and $15.99 for the pot stickers. The price of the pot stickers is a little high but you do get 12 and they are good. Also worth noting their pot stickers are tiny, half the size of what you would expect, I guess that's why they give you 12. So doing the math, and rounding up, the total before tax would be $27. They charged me an additional $5 for everything. I get tax, I'm not disputing that, but even with a 7.25% tax, it should have been ~$29. Do they charge a to-go fee? That's not indicated anywhere. Do they automatically calculate what they feel should be their tip? No utensils, no napkins, no fortune cookie, no sauces (not even pot sticker sauce!), nothing extra, literally 2 basic dishes, and a couple of crappy attitudes. Never again, I learned my lesson and will go up the street to Happy Wok, half the cost and phenomenal service there. Shame on this place for gouging people. Beware of this restaurant and double-check the price they advertise to the price you pay. read more

YESSSS! Finally someplace to get dumplings! And, right next door to my favorite coffee place! This gem is in downtown Auburn on Sacramento Street. Parking is tough at busy times, but otherwise okay. Come for the lunch specials too! I needed a quick and small bite so I came in for pork dumplings and a bowl of steamed rice. Made fresh and super fast! The dumplings were piping hot and oh so delicious. Dang. I've missed this in my life lately. Reasonable price, great menu. Can't wait to come back and try other items on the menu. read more

I love Liu Mandarin Kitchen and Sunny, the owner. This is one of my go to spots when I am in Auburn. The food here is so fresh and I've never had better dumplings anywhere else in my life. Our regular order consists of 15 dumplings and vegetable fried rice. We love the pork and the vegetable tofu dumplings, the sauce she gives you on the side is a perfect addition. Today, we stopped in after being in the area and ordered our usual. The dumplings are so good! This restaurant is one of the cleanest in the old town area, it has beautiful decor and paintings. The bathroom is immaculately clean. I love sitting in the front windows by the door and eating delicious food while we chat with Sunny. I wish we had Liu Mandarin Kitchen back when I was a kid growing up in Auburn, but we do now, so GO! read more

Sunny does such a nice job and my meals have always been enjoyable. I tried the Pad Thai with chicken today and it was really delicious! Very clean restaurant and there appears to be a decent takeout business, as well. The dumplings are (as reported) remarkable. I've had the vegetarian and pork and each delivered. I read a review that said the prices were high for the area, but only ever so slightly. The quality is worth every penny. Found the bun super bready and stuffing not flavorful and dry. dumplings were ok but lacked some real flavor as well. The service is amazingly quick.
