We drove one hour and a half to eat at one of our favorite Asian restaurants in Richmond. Unfortunately they changed their hours and yelp was unaware, so we had to settle on another Asian restaurant and Pete's was close by with 4 solid stars. I like the family style tables and the family portion options on the menu. The Mrs notice the three pepper dish and knowing that I love spicy dishes, we ordered this dish w/beef. Sarah our server explained that it is not a spicy dish as one would think. Two out of the three peppers are spicy the other is a bell pepper. Now I don't consider jalapeño or Thai chili pepper spicy, so I thought the dish would be a nice mild flavor at best. We also ordered the steamed dumplings and spring rolls and Bang Bang shrimp. You would think a 4 star Asian restaurant could get a spring roll right...NOPE, it was mushy on the inside and just horrible to the palate. The dumplings however, were fantastic and the dipping sauce was a nice added touch but believe me the dumpling can hold its own. Now the Bang Bang shrimp was THE MOST DISGUSTING dish this restaurant put before us. (See Picture) the shrimp were drowned in a sauce and became a soft soggy mess, unedible. Do Not Order, you will be disappointed. Then there was the three pepper beef. Great dish and the reason they got three stars. Flavorful and hot! But then I coughed, the HELL FIRE that hit the back of my throat...! It took a minute for me to get myself together. The Mrs jokingly said, Pete heard you talking about his dish and kicked up the heat. Well he got his revenge, and me and my throat both apologize if we disrespected the heat in the three pepper beef dish. Definitely not as good as the Rockville, MD location, nevertheless I am grateful to have a Peter Chang's in the area since the local Chinese restaurant game seems pretty weak! Love how they have classic Peter Chang menu items like golden mountain chicken and grandmas sweet and sour pork, as well as mala fish filets (my fave). The food is pretty decent but slightly blander and almost more soggy? Not enough to deter me from returning here, and it's not as if I've encountered any better alternatives for Chinese food yet. read more

Terrible service. They included 4 adults and 3 kids as a table of 7 whereby we were then charged a service fee. We were not told of an extra charge. It is unfair to include children (all under 5) as adults. Also, dinner portion sizes were very small. We will not be going back. We have been dinning at Peters Chang at Glen Allen for several years. But tonight 3/2/2024 we had a horrible experience with the manager, he said "he was the person in charge". He brought to our table a plate we did not order among with the plates we ordered and made us pay. He said the restaurant wouldn't take the blame for that and we had to pay or he would call the police. It was a $15 plate, I had no problem paying for, which I did, but he threatened us and the server who had no fault about it. Our family dinned ended up being a horrible experience because of "the person in charge of the restaurant". DRY FRIED EGGPLANT!! If you only get one thing, get the dry friend eggplant. It's crispy on the outside, yet melts in your mouth. The combination of the peppers with the green onion yields a spicy, almost tangy, delight. I also got the chicken with onions and peppers and highly recommend it. No complaints about the food here, my complaint is about the service. So, I happen to love the chili paste stuff they offer with the food and keep in mind it's free with the meal. About a month ago I while dining in the restaurant the waiter sold me a pint of it for $5.00 ( 1 month ago). So I called in a $66 food order today And asked for the same pint of chili paste and the jerk taking orders try's to tell me the price is now $8.00. convinced there must be a misunderstanding I proceed to the restaurant to pick up the order Hoping that maybe this guy didn't understand what I was asking because surely there is no way chili sauce can't be 60% more than it was 30 days ago . But of course he starts trying to justify the 60% increase citing price increases from China. Needless to say that didn't work and I canceled the entire order. This is price gauging plain and simple. Had another great lunch today at Peter Chang's. We started with the Crispy Pork Belly, which is always a favorite. We also shared the Bamboo Fish (also a favorite), Golden Mountain Chicken, and the Pork with Garlic Sauce (on the lunch menu). First time trying the Pork with Garlic Sauce (loved that it had wood ear mushrooms). Everything was delicious. As usual had lots of good leftovers to take home. (Pics included above). On a previous occasion I had the Peter Chang Duck in Stone Pot (soup). This is quite a large pot (if you have leftover soup-- just take it home, and cook some shrimp in the broth, and you can add noodles as well). The flavor is addicting but wow it is spicy. Love it though, and like those tiny mushrooms (so flavorful), and the tofu skin. While we were there, photographers from Garden & Gun Magazine (Charleston, SC) were taking photographs of various menu items. The magazine is going to be featuring Peter Chang, his food and restaurants, in an upcoming article. The photographers were raving about how much they loved the food too. read more

This is the best Chinese restaurant in town - hands down. We've frequented there for the past three years, and enjoyed each visit. This place is very authentic (I should know - I am from China) and I loved every dish I have ordered. My husband and I love spicy food- and Peter Chang knows his peppers, making use of Thai peppers, dried red peppers, habaneros, and ghost chilies. Of course, the spicy level of any dish can be customized, but my husband likes going all the way - often looking like he had a tough workout after eating his super spicy dish. Today, we got duck stone pot, and it was delicious with tofu skin soaked with spicy broth. Totally good value for $20. We also got stir fry beef (special menu) and it was good. We always get dry fried green beans with extra pickled peppers and extra spicy, but today we saw the cabbage on the iron plate on the special menu, and we ordered the cabbage. It was AMAZING. The price is a bit above other Chinese restaurants - but the quantity is very generous. I usually have two rounds of left overs after each visit. Some other dishes we love including Shan city chicken, three pepper beef, tofu skin app, dried fried pork belly. But everything on the menu is great. read more

Well, have always been a fan of Peter Chang and was looking forward to the re-opening in the new space. In short, I think they jumped the gun on readiness for re-opening AND they've made some changes that aren't positive. The new space itself is poorly designed - tables on top of each other, poor flow around the space and from the kitchen, and a narrow main aisle. Seems like it was pieced together .... and poorly. I'm sure the kitchen and wait staff will be complaining about it. They were woefully understaffed front of house. 1 employee seemed to be handling take out orders, wait list, table assignments, and even payments. Wait staff seemed frazzled and covering too many tables. And they didn't even have the bar operational. Take your time and get it right. Onto the food. The dried fried eggplant, something we get every time we visit, had 2 issue - 1) super oily and 2) portion size was 1/2 to 2/3 of what it has always been for the same price. May have something to do with the attempts to have more creative plating. As the dish itself was 1/2 the size. We had the same issue with the hunan fish. Just not the same. It was served atop a Kung Fu Panda dish and the dish itself was tiny. For the same price as before ($18), the portion was about 1/2 or less than we've always experienced. The taste of the dish was also just not the same as before. Disappointed. Will give it some time before heading back. read more

So damn HORRIBLE I don't even want the credit that the manager said he would give me at the store being that they don't have the capability to issue a credit card refund (damn Liar!). Absolutely delicious. I had the szchechaun double-cooked pork belly, fried crispy eggplant, and potstickers. The food was absolutely amazing particularly the fried eggplant - spicy, crisp, with a soft center - it was the best eggplant I had ever tasted. This place was yummy! We ordered the puffy pancakes and I finished off with the lamb chops (spiciest option). The puffy pancakes made me smile when I saw them. They look like huge edible puffer fish on the attack, and the texture added an extra pleasure to the appetizer. For the lamb chops, the onion and cilantro seasoned chops were mouth watering and perfectly cooked. Boy, was this a treat!!! I'd definitely return. If you're just going to order kung pao chicken or lo mein, or want typical Americanized Chinese food, you are in the wrong place, and don't down downgrade this place because you like that garbage. "Dry-fried (anything)" will be delicious, as will anything the put in a hotpot. The dry-fried Szechuan sausage appetizer (T2) is possibly the best thing I have EVER eaten, but can't go wrong with the eggplant or bamboo fish. I am absolutely impressed with Peter Chang China Cafe! Everything was amazing!! We came on a Friday evening and the place was full! I immediately knew it was going to be good. (Well that and that Yelp had given them rave reviews!) We had to wait about 20 minutes and then we were given a booth. We ordered the scallion bubble pancakes and hubby ordered the hot and sour soup. The bubble pancakes were nothing I've ever seen or tasted! It was crispy and came with a curry sauce that left you wanting more. Hubby said the hot and sour soup was the best he's EVER tasted. He ordered the spicy fish and vegetables and I ordered the combination lo mein and the spicy shrimp dish and it was wonderful! They use a 3 pepper spicy rating system: 1 pepper little spicy, 2 pepper medium spicy, 3 very spicy. Our dishes were 2 peppers and it was perfectly spicy. I cannot wait to come back!! I love how Peter Chang was a James Beard nominee. It all makes sense. He's truly a very talented chef! read more

I was recommended to go to Peter Chang's by a friend and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious - we tried 3 different meals and all 3 were some of the best we have tasted (Mongolian Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken and Hunan Shrimp). My wife really enjoyed her Kung Pao Chicken to the point that she stated it was some of the best she has ever tasted and we have gone to a tremendous amount of Chinese restaurants over the years. I really enjoyed the Hunan Shrimp, it was a little hot for my taste but our 16yo daughter thought it was terrific. It had a great taste just a little warm for my tongue. I have had Oriential food at many different restaurants over the years, even overseas - his is some of the best so far. The prices are a little more than any other restaurant we have tried, so we may going for the lunch menu in the future. The place was clean and the food was ready and waiting for me when I arrived to pick it up and this place for us is about a 30 minute drive - but worth it. read more

Let's face it, most all of us have our favorite steak place, Mexican place, chicken place, etc.. And of course our favorite Chinese place. When making a change for any reason, there are bound to be items that were better at your old place than at your new place, and vice versa. This was the case with Peter Chang. They are MUCH closer than my old place - a real plus but some of their offerings just weren't what I wanted or was used to. . Then I found it!!!, on the menu under Grandmother Home-Style Cooking: Grandmother's Chicken with mixed mushrooms. You can also order it with shrimp or beef. OMG, it was so good! There are still some items for which I'll make the trip to my old favorite, but I absolutely know exactly what I'll order next time from PF Chang's. read more

Used to be very good but now the quality has gone into the gutter. Last two times the food was cold and soggy. It was obvious that they served old food prepared a while ago. For the price point of this this restaurant you would expect at least fresh food. Not just the quality has gotten their customer service is nothing to rave about. Ridiculously wrong, actually They gave you NO green onions/scallions!! That's a pretty critical ingredient to leave off!
