I saw all the great reviews and I was referred here by a trusted friend when my car started having oil in the coolant reservoir. Tim told me his next availability was 2 weeks away so I waited and towed my car in the night before my appointment. I never received a call about my car so I called and checked in 2 days later and he tells me he didnt look at my car yet because he didnt write down my info and forgot about my appointment. He calls me later to tell me that theres definitely a bad headgasket and it was too expensive to make sense to repair and my car was basically toast. I paid around $300 and took my car home. I drove on the car a good 300 miles and it ran smoothly so I decided to get a second opinion. I looked up subaru specialty and took it to ackermans in berkeley and without even looking at it yet, he immediately said " you have a bad pcv valve" and it's a common issue because there wasn't evidence of the coolant in the oil reservoir so the leak was one directional. He replaced the valve for $280 and its been a year and half- it fixed the problem! I didnt want to write a bad review but after all this time Im so grateful I found Bruce at ackermans so if youre a subaru owner looking for help, reconsider this place. If I would've trusted his diagnosis I would've retired a car for a silly valve part...

The owner, Tim, here is awesome - professional, straightforward, honest and tells you exactly what you need or don't need done. He mentioned they work on European cars after I mentioned I had a Mini and since then now have an Audi... after the estimate at Audi for a brake job, I said thanks but no thanks to Audi and came here. At around half the price, Tim apologized for the expensive parts as apparently my Audi has the most expensive ones.. no problem, I will take that price any day. Tim also reviewed other items on the list of "things to do" from Audi and noted when things may actually need to be done or if I can wait longer. Super personable, love supporting our local shop and trust him with all of my vehicles!

They were also able to deal with my tire lock without the key (my family has two of the same type of cars and the key was with the other car). They worked around the lock at one visit, and broke it off (with my permission) on another in order to get me back in the road in a timely fashion. The time when they worked around the lock was in 2024, and I paid about $45. The time when they had to break the lock was a year later and I paid about $75. I especially appreciate their professionalism and ability to not talk down to female customers, which sadly a lot of auto shops still do, even in 2025. Definitely recommend!

They had availability same day and it only cost me $30! I brought the car in around 3:30, waited in the waiting area, and the car was ready around 4pm. The mechanic even walked with me to my car to make sure the light was now off, that my damaged tire I requested back was in my trunk to return to Costco for a credit since it was under warranty, and that I had my wheel lock key back in my possession. 10/10 service, will definitely come back if I have any other tire issues!

Ive had 5 of my cars done at livermore muffler, 2 hondas, 1 mustang, 77 chevy stepside and an isuzu rodeo. Everytime i get good prices good, fast service and honest opinions. Steve , the owner, really knows his stuff when it comes to exhaust systems, always guiding me in the right direction for quality sound and best ways to gain horsepower. Not once i have ever doubted his work or even considered going anywhere else, especially because i know a lot of shops who overcharge way to much and the quality is nowhere near as good as livermore muffler. Definately HIGHLY reccomended shop to go for any exhaust. read more

I have been bringing my old cars here for over 15 years. Always professional and always a top quality job done. Most recently Steve Jr. fabricated/welded/installed a complete dual exhaust system on my 71 Plymouth Duster. I just installed a new HP 340 engine, so I as always, expected a top notch job done. I am very picky and was not let down. Not only is Steve also a classic car enthusiast, but is very knowledgeable, and personable. I don't bring my 69 Road Runner, 54 Ford truck, or Duster anywhere else. I look forward to future business with Steve! read more

I read about so many cars having their catalytic converters stolen. Based on recommendations, I called Steve at Livermore Muffler Shop and he clearly explained what the cage can and cannot do. He gave me a good quote and I just got it done. He delivered on time and I couldn't be more impressed with his professionalism and work. The amount I paid is less than a $500 deductible that I would have to pay an insurance company to replace a stolen converter and more importantly way less hassle. read more

I was in and out of there in under an hour, and they did a great job at a reasonable price. Pleanty of parking, and an old Bonniville salt flat speed car is there to look at while you wait. So waited to 6,000 miles and changed - oil so black that the mechanic said it hadn't been changed for a long time. So black- he started to look at the manufactured motor and said it's the same motor as the vehicle came with. Doesn't look like they replaced motor. Checking with owner of this shop to see. Also the cost for a new replacement refurbished motor is over $9,000 and a 100k warranty, rebuilt same motor just fixing head gasket is just over $6,000 and only 25,000 mile warranty . My current refurbished replacement motor has rough idle, engine light is on and can't reset engine light.
