The food I ordered was horrible. The oxtails were tiny. They gave me three pieces, and I could've sworn one of those pieces was a short rib. However, the oxtails and the peas that came with it were the most edible part of my order. The sweet potatoes were horrible, the crab rice was overly seasoned, had a good flavor, but the crab had a slightly loud smell, the shrimp and grits were terrible. The shrimp was rubbery, and had a slightly rancid smell, the grits were very lumpy, and looked recycled from a previous batch. Overall, I wasted a lot of money. read more

We ordered the catfish, jambalaya, and barbecue ribs. I honestly cannot think of what I favored the most as everything was so delicious! The catfish was cooked to perfection, the jambalaya was seasoned just right, and the ribs were "fall off the bone" tender. The ribs were fabulous! I don't normally like tomato-based sauces. I come from a part of the south that prefers mustard or vinegar based sauce. But the ribs were tender and meaty with just the right amount of fat, and the sauce was not overly sweet. The side of baked beans were also really good. The catfish sandwich was good in that the catfish was cooked perfectly and had a nice crunch. The bread was an odd choice though. I think I'd have the fish as a plate next time rather than a sandwich. The fries were tasty but under-cooked. I'd try to ask for them extra crispy next time. We will definitely be back - there were more hits and misses. We want to work our way through the menu. Bring your patience since service is at a southernly pace. read more

Okay, I went here on a recommendation from Next Door because local barbeque should be supported. This review is based on my first visit, and the following points are key: I ordered over the phone, picked it up about 15 minutes later, and ate it at home. 1) Customer service: Top of the line, and that should surprise everyone because Berkeley is just down the road. I was greeted pleasantly on the phone, when I got there, everyone said hello and treated me like I was worthwhile. I like that. 2) Fast: I was told my order would be ready in 10 minutes, and they weren't kidding. The smart money says either order in person or when your just a few blocks away, because of heat conservation issues. 3) Serving size: I got the one-way pork ribs with potato salad side and it was enough for a one-person meal and then some. I paid $20, and got my money's worth. I like that too. 4) Quality: I like a bit more kick to BBQ sauce, but even so these were pretty good ribs. The potato salad was really, really good. Again, I got my money's worth. 5) Heat conservation: Since everything's take out these days, keeping the food warm while you transport it to where ever you're going to eat it may be an issue, and there's not much the restaurant can do that they haven't already done. My advice is to order there, and eat it across the street once it's ready. 6) No choice of sauce: It appears to be a "one size fits all" deal. It's a good sauce, but like I said, I like a bit more kick and the option for something spicier would have been a nice touch. In the final wash: 4.5 rounded up to 5 because it's not Berkeley: nice people, good food, fast service, but spicier options would be welcome. read more

I have been meaning to write this review for far too long! Over the holidays our company wanted to do a nice meal for our 150 employees, and boy oh boy did Lizzy's serve that! Mashed potatoes, ham & turkey, greens, 3 kinds of pound cakes, rolls, sauce... Love this place. We are from Houston so we are always on the look out for good Cajun food. After giving up on the line at the fish market, we found Lizzy's Cajun Cafe on Yelp - it was probably around 2:30 PM. We got the catfish special and jambalaya with a side of fried okra. The catfish is really something else. It is how fried catfish should look and taste always. I had to hide the last piece in the microwave so I don't eat it all, if ya know what I'm saying ... The fried okra is also something I would highly recommend. It tastes like fried okra + stuffing. Highly recommend and love the parking along the street. Would drive 30 miles for this. read more

Met Lizzy and her wonderful staff. Had a Patty Melt for lunch, it was the bomb! Served on great marble rye with the perfect grilled onions and cheese ratio. They don't skimp! My only criticism is mine came with fries rather than the advertised potato salad. This didn't spoil anything however because of the main attraction. I will trying all their offerings as you can tell they can cook. *** Just went in for my second Patty Melt in 6 days! This time served with fabulous potato salad. Again it was delicious. First time going and I'll be back. I really liked their bbq ribs and mild links. They don't skimp on the sauce. Which makes you wish they gave you more bread. The potatoes salad and baked beans were on point. The Mac and cheese was good...maybe just tad more salt but good nonetheless. The fried okra had great consistency, I look for a bit more seasoning. The peach cobbler was good but had a lot of pineapple in it which I wasn't expecting . use to. Thankfully my niece, who's allergic to pineapple wasn't sharing it with me, but with that says, it would've been good with vanilla ice cream. I was out of it though. read more

Decided to try a late lunch here. The food was not good! The ribs were the toughest that I've ever had and the cabbage tasted like spicy sauerkraut. The baked beans were ok. They tasted like they were straight out of the can with a little bbq sauce added. The lemonade tasted like soapy water. They add a service charge for using a credit or debit card, but don't tell you until they've charged it. I was very disappointed in the food and service! Won't be back! read more

After a hike at Tilden, my friend and I moseyed down Solano for a late lunch. The delicious aroma emanating from Lizzy's made our mouths water. It was a little after 3 pm, so they weren't busy. We were warmly greeted and given menus. It was hard to decide. Everything sounded so good. My friend chose the crab cakes. They were big and filled with delicious crab. These were meal-sized, not the little ones you get as an appetizer at most other restaurants. I chose 3 sides: cabbage, fried okra, and mac & cheese. All excellent. We were treated by the kitchen with delicious lemonade and warm brown bread. Because they weren't busy, both the chef and owner stopped by our table to introduce themselves and thank us for stopping by. They are almost finished making a banquet room in the adjoining next door space where they plan to have live music in the near future. Everything about our meal was great. Lizzy's Cajun Cafe (902 Masonic Avenue in Albany) is my new favorite place to get food. Their menu is delightful and unique. If you are looking for something different from the usual Albany fare, this is the place. The BBQ chicken and Quita's patty melt are delicious. The chicken was moist and tender and the BBQ sauce is perfection. CBoy's mac and cheese and Flora's Fabulous Peach Cobbler are not to be missed. Y'all, not even joking this is the best BBQ I've had in California. It made me remember the to die for BBQ I got during my college years in Louisiana. The pork ribs were big and meaty, the chicken was so moist and tender it fell off the bone, and the BBQ sauce was spot on. Close it out with some peach cobbler thats the perfect blend of sweet and spiced and you have yourself a perfect meal. I love this place! I always order the garlic noodles either with chicken or no meat at all or their fried Tilapia fish. My daughter always orders the ribs with fries. Truly excellent fried catfish and okra. It is the closest I have had out here to what I grew up eating in Texas. And the portions are huge. One order of each was more than enough for lunch for two. I am planning to go back soon to try the fried green tomatoes and jambalaya. read more
