When a danky little restaurant like this has people waiting out the door for a seat I expect amazing food. Not to say their food sucked because it didn't, but it was not as good as I expected. Food: Ordered 2 pizzas, 2 pastas, and the eggplant. Pizzas were okay...as a higher end pizza joint like Pizza Guys and/or RoundTable (that is if that's high end to you...). I expected the Pizza to be amazing for some reason which it wasn't. The pasta was pretty basic. Once again not bad, but expected people to be lining up for amazing food not "Okay" food. So what gluten free dumdum goes to a pasta restaurant? ‍ But I blame Yelp. Whenever I searched GF restaurants, this place would come up! Why? They have SECRET gluten free gnocchi not on the menu that you can pair with any sauce. I opted for plain red sauce. Meh. But the eggplant sauce was soooo good. We also got the marinated mushrooms which were perfect for dipping the delicious bread into. What? GF eating real bread! They make their bread and pasta in house from Italian flour, so if you believe the rumor that you can eat pasta in Italy this might be the place to try it first! Pro tip: Order take out. My boyfriend took me here because he loves their food. We walked up to the restaurant and the man standing there just stared at us. I was taken back, because usually people greet you coming up to a business. So it was a bit uncomfortable. My boyfriend intervened and the man became friendly. The food is really good!! Do you know how hard it is to get a decent plate of spaghetti and meatballs in the bay area?! Do YOU?! It's a simple dish and people seem to eff it up all the damn time but Lo Coco's has it down to a science. Anyway, Lo Coco's has always been a favorite of both the husband and I. The service is awesome and the food. Oh. My. The food. It feels like a warm hug every single time. The servings aren't insanely huge. They are perfect and worth the price. As mentioned, my fave is their spaghetti and meatballs. The noodles are al dente, the sauce is perfectly seasoned and the meatballs. The meatballs are moist to perfection. It's like my mom is cooking back in the kitchen. I'm 33 days away from my due date and currently hankering for some spaghetti and meatballs. There's a reason why Lo Coco's has been a Bay Area staple for several decades. They have some of the best down to earth Italian cuisine I've tried, and it really feels like you're eating at the family's dinner table than a restaurant. I might regret saying this, but they have an off the menu magic mushroom pizza which is essentially a bunch of wild mushrooms topped with truffle oil. I've eaten here twice with friends. It's a small restaurant, but big on flavor. Two dishes you must try are the bolognese & pappardelle porcini. The bolognese is very savory with just the right amount of tang. It's usually not on the menu, so you need to ask for it. The pappardelle is creamy with lovely truffle flavor. It definitely tastes better when it's fresh out of the kitchen. I'm a super slow eater, so it congealed a bit near the end of the meal. Pasta has a nice bite and it was the perfect thickness for the sauces. Cash only - so stop by the ATM before swinging by. It was nearly $50 for 2 regular sized plates of pasta. Not a great value. WOW! What an AMAZING RESTAURANT! We frequent the piedmont restaurant row and this surprisingly became our new favorite. CASH ONLY! - Interesting for a sit down restaurant, but Yelp warned us and the servers told us right when we walked in. Caprese salad - an okay appetizer, not the best, but probably because its winter season. Cannelloni - YUM! I've had cannelloni before, but it was my boyfriend's first time. Two long ricotta and meat stuffed shells, baked. YUM! YUM YUM! So delicious! Tortellini Sugo - I'm a tortellini lover - not sure why I love this type of pasta, but I do. Sugo is the basic tomato sauce, and it was sweet, simple, but delicious. Cannoli for dessert - Cannolis are my favorite dessert! The ones they make in New York are so much better than the ones I've had in the West Coast. And of course, the ones I had in Italy were to die for. I was SO surprised that they make their own cannoli shells! I've learned that it's very rare to find a restaurant that makes their own shells, so when I asked, I was more than pleased to hear that they make their own! Very yummy. Food was 4.5 stars, but the SERVICE is where it HITS! The waiters were SO FRIENDLY! Our water was never close to getting empty, very informative about their menu, and were so kind and wonderful! Had to give them a 20%+ tip, because they were so awesome!!!!! That meal for the two of us was only $53! So reasonable for a three course meal :) I love this little family Sicilian restaurant. This pizza had a generous amount of ricotta cheese that really balanced the saltiness of the other cheeses. Creamy, fluffy, and cheesy on a chewy dough. Lococo's special - we were observing lent so we substituted the meat for mushrooms. Once the pizza came out I started looking for the anchovies. I didn't see much, but they were there! Delicious pizza, makes sense why this pizza is their specialty. The fresh out of the oven/fire bread was delicious. Service was great as everyone was polite and friendly. Small place with a big charm. The man owner is personable and efficient. He checked on us frequently, joked with my dad, and had something positive to say about every pizza we ordered. I'm tempted to give Lo Coco's a one-star review just to scare people away, but that would be mean because it is one of my very favorite restaurants in all of the East bay for a dozen years or so. Yes, we sometimes can't get in because the wait is too long, but that's on us for not getting there at the "right" time. No, I will not tell you what the "right" time is to go there, and if the wait is too long, go somewhere where nobody else is seated and I guarantee you nobody will care. Yes, it's not cheap, but if you want cheap, they're a dime a dozen (oh - an unintentional pun!), and the wait is probably not as long. Yes, it's pretty cozy, but if you want a big spread out grocery-store-sized McItalian spot, I'm sure the Cheesecake Factory has room for you. Lo Coco's was around LONG before Yelp and will survive LONG after the yelpers fade away. We have never had anything other than top quality, consistently delicious, traditional Sicilian food, served by professional, experienced, friendly staff. read more

Perhaps this is just a good place for taking out pizza, over and out...I don't know, I've never had their pizza, but my house painter says it's good, and he's a New Yorker, which holds some weight...I also saw quite a few people picking up pizzas when my Wife and I had dinner there this evening. What I can tell you with absolute certainty is that it's not a good Italian restaurant for much other than pizza, with the exception of some better-than-average flatbread (which only supports the "pizza place" theory). The "Insalata Emancipata" ($14.50) was very so-so, but nothing special that elicited any pleasureful moans or whimpers. Just basic greens with an unremarkable vinaigrette dressing and a loveless handful of gorgonzola, pecans, olives and currants, all without distinction. The "New Zealand Mussels Parmigiana" ($12.50) was quite nice, consisting of plump, flavorful, Green Lips baked in a tangy marinara sauce with just the right amount of garlic. No complaints here. The entrees were an all-out disaster. My "Eggplant Parmigiana" ($17.50) consisted of three, thin, mushy slices of eggplant drowned in way too much marinara sauce and cheese with no breading (huh?) and no complexity or flavor. When I cut the meager, sorrowful discs of eggplant with a fork, they immediately broke down into a formless mush that evoked infant memories of Gerber's applesauce. At least the side of Penne ($5.95) that I ordered (the eggplant doesn't come with pasta) was nice and firm, but looked and tasted store-bought. The "Pappardelle Porcini" ($21) that my Wife ordered was even worse. The pasta itself was cooked to the correct firmness, but that's where the accolades end. Most seriously, it was literally oozing sebaceous viscosity in a swamp of heavy cream and truffle oil that bordered on the obscene...wait, no: It WAS obscene. The namesake Porcini mushrooms were limited to a stingy smattering of small fragments and their flavor was totally overwhelmed by the truffle oil. My Wife specifically asked the server to have the kitchen tone down the truffle oil, so I'd hate to think what would have showed up if she hadn't spoken up. The 2 stars are for the friendly server, the efficient water service and the mussels...as well as the aforementioned, excellent flatbread. Again, maybe this is just a good pizza place...I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that by ordering one soon...to go. read more

Went there for the first time last night, it's a small place and can get really busy (we've tried to go other times but the wait was too long). We went early, the staff was super-friendly. Our food came out quick, was fresh and delicious. My only complaint was they were out of the tortellini, and it was only 5:30 or so. Wow. This is a nice hole in the wall. The restaurant can seat about 40 people. We have heard that most of the clientele are locals. We were in Emeryville and decided to give this a try. The spaghetti with meatballs was excellent. Sauce had an excellent flavor but a bit sweater than we normally find. The sweetness was nice and didn't detract. The meatballs tasted like they hard garlic which was a nice touch. The Caprese was very nice and well presented. Pictures of the Caresse are available. This was our first time. My fault for coming here as a vegetarian. My spaghetti with peas was plain; definitely one of those times you think to yourself "crap, I could have made this myself at home". The key dishes to get are anything with the creamy pesto and most of the pizzas. I was super jealous of my friend's tortellini with pesto - and the tortellini was stuffed with prosciutto!! The vegetarian pizza rivaled pizza from Napoli. The server was dubious that two of us would be able to finish a liter of house wine, but admitted it was a great deal. I brought 2 friends visiting from Hawaii and had probably the best meal ever. We ordered a 1/2 Metropolitan and 1/2 Masterpiece pizza in large, the red pepper ravioli special and a 6 pack of the meatballs. The pizza was a delicious and colorful masterpiece and was a delicious as it looked. The meatballs were not just delicious they were something you wanted to savor. After trying the first bite, I felt as if I had eaten the most incredible blend of meat and spices as it made me smile. The meatballs are lighter than they use to be and the sauce is sweeter, but the combination is a perfect complement. If you haven't had meatballs in awhile, I would recommend them as my friends and I enjoyed them. The ravioli was delicious as the blend of the red peppers and chard filling complemented each other perfectly and the sauce added a delicious creamy touch without overpowering the perfect pillows of ravioli. We also had the cannoli which were fantastic so leave room for dessert as it is worth the extra calories. What makes LoCoco's special is not just the food but the people. The food is made fresh and you can taste it in everything you eat as we all know the difference between a bottled sauce and one made from fresh ingredients. If you like food made from real food then try Lo Coco's as you won't be disappointed. Lo Coco's is old school, and I mean that in a good way. It's a tiny (OK small), neighborhood stop where you can get a great meal. We started the meal with house made bread sticks (yum!) and a salad. we split the Svizio di Sportivo, which was arugula with pistachio, green olives, currants and blue cheese. The greens were fresh and crisp and the textures and flavors were nicely balanced. I tried the Fettuccine Campagnola with proscuitto, green peas and cream. My friend had the Fettuccine al Pesto Creme The sauce in both dishes was light and flavorful. The pasta dishes were fresh and well portioned. The ambiance is homey and service is friendly. it's hard to imagine that cash only places (and ones that accept checks!) still exist, but they do. Be prepared. There also might be a wait. Prepare for that too. If you don't like being too close to other dinners, this might not be the place for you. Was visiting from out of town and a friend raved about this place so we looked over the menu and finally placed an order through their website to go walk and pick up. Got there and the place was dark, locked, and two others standing outside, yet there were two workers visibly working in the kitchen. Another party, like us, had gone there to pick up their takeout. The third party was standing outside trying to get in to have dinner. No signs on the door or website about being closed on Dec 27, and again, their website was accepting orders and taking money for them. Finally, one of the workers came to the door and tried to talk to us through it- he would not open the door to speak to us. Showed us a number on his phone and said to call it. I did, as did the other takeout lady, and it went straight to voicemail. About half an hour later, hungry, the money was returned to my account- but still an hour later and no call back from the number with an apology, and never got an apology from the worker inside, it was a night of wasted time on dinner plans. OMG why has it taken me so long to try this place?! Shame on me. But also when you are 100% Italian hard to find a true good place. This small Scicillian gem on Piedmont Ave in Oakland is amazing. I actually can't wait to go back! The space is small but enough room to not feel like you are in another tables conversation. They start you off with complimentary warm flat bread like. Very good and tasty. We ordered a pizza and if you cant pick just one then you can do a half and half order qe got the veggie and the traditional Margarita pizza style. Very good. The dough for the pizza was perfect thin and cooked to perfection. I also had the pappardelle porcini mama mo was it delicious. I could easily eat that every single day. But you know f***ing carbs. My friend lives in the neighborhood and he recommended Lo Coco's. It felt so cute and homey from the second we walked in. I liked the locals vibe, which I don't ever seem to experience in SF. Several items on the menu jumped out at me. With the help of the server, I chose the Pappardelle Porcini and my friend had the Tortellini con Pesto Creme. After ordering, they brought out a single warm breadstick and a plate with fragrant olive oil. The bread was so good (maybe I was extremely hungry). Before we even realized it, the entrees were ready. Mine was 5* all the way. I love the texture of the ultra-wide pappardelle (my favorite type of pasta). The sauce had a creamy earthiness from the mushrooms. The tortellini were cooked perfectly and paired well with the pesto sauce. They also provided more breadsticks that we used to soak up the sauces. We ate it all very quickly and were quite happy with out choices. I had the fettuccine Alaska and ravioli pesto creme. The salmon on the Alaska was very good, but a little too salty. The ravioli pesto creme was very good as well, it seemed a little overcooked for my liking, but the creme definitely added flavor to it. We also ordered a side of bolognese meatball, I thought IKEA had really good meatballs, but coming to lo coco's has changed that. They are stuffed to perfection.
