Take my advice and do lo cocos the right way. Get take out and don't waste your time or money (extra to tip) on table service. They won't take reservations and the place is small. I know its a bread load but don't order anything other than the pizza. And the bread, get a lot of because its f-ing delicious. Their other dishes aren't very good. I usually order my greens and other dishes from somewhere else and supplement with lo cocos pizza and bread. Oh and bring cash. They're too cheap to except credit cards which is why I docked them a star. In this day and age not excepting credit cards is bad business. I docked them another star for their unwillingness to take reservations. Very good food, particularly the fettucine carbonara & pesto ravioli - creamy, well done, and very satisfying! The house red is pretty decent. Intimate space & location, obviously very popular given the 20min wait. Service is good at the beginning and at the end of the meal but if you need something in the middle of dinner you have to practically tackle someone. Not impressed. The flat bread was very good... how could anything fried not be?? The pasta was bland and taste-less. We tried the Pesto ravioli and the tortellinis filled with prosciutto and chicken... the pesto dish was bland and boring and the tortellinis needed cheese or something else inside. We went to Lo Coco's because it smelled amazing... the wait was waaaaaay too long for what we got, and the food was unimpressive. i would say 3.5 stars. somehow, i think lo coco's food tasted better as leftovers than it did at the restaurant. this is not because the food wasn't good to start with, but because i had monolithic heartburn the day i went to eat there. moral of the story for everyone is that you should never ever go to an italian restaurant if you already had a ton of acidic food that day and your esophagus feels like fire ripped through it. my mate and i got the caprese salad, which was very good, but darned well should have been for $9.95. we also ordered penne with meatballs and penne with eggplant. pretty good. the meatballs were excellent--you get two large meatballs with the dish. the bread that the meal comes with is extremely tasty. i think it is by far the best bread i've had at an italian restaurant. so don't forget your checkbook (because they don't take credit cards but they do take personal checks) and remember the tums. read more

The food here is very good, don't get me wrong. But I found the dishes to be overpriced for what you're getting and for the ambience they are setting (which is fairly casual). And, as everyone mentions, it's cash only. I'm disappointed because I really wanted this place to be my go-to Italian restaurant on Piedmont Ave. But it's a little too pricey for me to come back regularly. You cannot beat this italian restaurant for food, atmosphere or service. It is intimate, romantic AND a great place to dine with good friends and good conversation. From the Inferno Pizza, the sauteed mushrooms, ANY of the noodle dishes, the house salad to the house red wine (wonderful...and I DO know wine) you cannot find a better venue. Parking can be a challenge but you can usually always find something on one of the side streets with a little diligence. Regardless - the search for parking is WELL WORTH IT. While there is sometimes a line out the door - it goes quickly - and with the service - you hardly know you are waiting. To give you some perspective, I would wait in line here for an hour, before I would go anywhere else if I am in the mood for good italian food. read more

Decent Italian rest. with good pizza. Appears to a favorite of locals as we went late Sun. evening and found it packed with diners. Small rest. with friendly servers. Rest has simple pasta dishes that were good but nothing compared to Dopo. Pizza was the best on the menu. Lots of choices. Soft but crisp crust and good toppings. The last time I had eaten here was in 1987 with my parents. I spent that night in the ER from food poisoning. I never, of course, went back except tonight with a friend... with and few people telling me to give it a second chance. The waiter seemed awfully friendly (AT FIRST) so once we got our food I did not want to complain. Linguini with clams (out of a can clams?/minced not whole) (terrible taste) - Fettuccine that was far to rich, and also CANNED!? (taste like it) Salad was just... so mediocre. We got our bill and it did look like 39 dollars (the way the waiter wrote it) and he sure took a change when we left 50 bucks... (nice tip RIGHT)!!! He snottily came back and reminded us it was 59 dollars. Jerk. I can;t wait to write my review of my new favorite Italian in SF! And I hate going to SF! Cute spot - horrible food. read more

If I had one word to describe this restaurant it would be "meh." It's a bit overpriced for fairly average cuisine, but if you're just after a quick Italian meal on Piedmont, this is for you. I find Pizzaiolo in nearby Temescal to be much better for both flavor and ambiance, though it's probably a bit pricier. Dopo, right across the street from L'Ococo's falls right in between. read more

Favorites include penne with eggplant, homemade raviolis marinara, caprise salad, lingiune pesto, sicilian style meatballs (with raising and pine nuts). The bread is incredible. Connoli with crispy chocolate shells and riccotta filling to die for. Small but good and reasonable wine list. Truly excellent service. Much better food, service, prices, than the excessively chi-chi "gourmet" Italian across the street. No credit cards but don't despair--they'll take a personal check. read more

Lo Coco's is one of my favorite places on Piedmont Ave. LOVE their meatballs! A great place for friends or a date, just real good Italian food, fair prices, friendly atmosphere, always seem to remember me even if it's been a long while since my last visit. My favorite is definitely the penne with meatballs, the sauce so yum...and again the meatballs, just my favorite anywhere! PIzza's good too, though it's not really my go to spot for pizza, I always come back for the oh so yummy pasta. It is inconvenient that they don't take credit cards, have to remember that, especially to tell first-timers I'm dining with. Was recently there for my go to Saute Calamari Old style with noodles. It's as good as it gets, my last review seem so long ago and many more visits since. PIZZA...MEH, RAVIOLI YUM, NO CREDIT CARDS WHAAA? We went to Lo Coco's intending to treat our friend. When the bill came, I whipped out my trusty plastic money and they said they don't take credit cards. Being that our bill was close to $100, I would think it would make sense for Lo Coco's to not cheap out on the nominal credit card fee since it would benefit their business. Underwhelming. Except for the foccacia table bread (served with butter. No olive oil offered) which was of good quality, there was nothing done with flare here. Seems like they're just cruising along making no effort towards creativity. The pizza looked good, and maybe that's what they do well, but the pasta dishes we had, spaghetti and tortellini, were drenched in a overly tangy tomato sauce lacking any subtlety or minor flavors. The semolina seemed to be of good quality. The meatballs contained dried currants or maybe raisins. Some of the cream sauce dishes looked better. Maybe we should have tried one of those. The salad I had was romaine lettuce with a few slices of roma tomato, blue cheese and too much vinaigrette. No fresh herbs, no fresh ground pepper, no freshly grated parmesan cheese. Nothing. I'm trying really hard to type the right words about Lococo's, but the drool keeps shorting out my keyboard! Yummy, fantastic, addictive, authentic, fun, friendly, worth the wait all seem like good choices but still inadequate. Lococo's is a small restaurant that serves the best Italian food in the 9 Bay Area counties. From the wine(which is served Italian style in rocks glasses), to the bread(ask for garlic in the oil. yes, it's worth the breath) to the Insalata Emperizita(sp?), to the pasta and the amazingly simple yet flavorful sauces that accompany them makes you start planning what you will have when you return to Lococo's before you get up to leave! The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to answer your questions about the menu. And the so-called "gruff guy" by another YELPer, is not gruff at all. In fact, when I was there this past Saturday he came out to see how many folks were lined up out side and joked they should open a sidewalk cannoli stand. Make the trip to Piedmont. This place is hard to compare to any other Italian spot in the east bay! We ordered the eggplant parmesan and pesto alfredo pasta dish with an emancipata salad. Each dish was super fresh and extremely flavorful. We also ordered two cannoli to go because we could just not stuff anything else into our stomachs, but we knew we would be craving something sweet later. The service is awesome as well. I wanted sparkling apple juice so our waiter brought me out sparkling water and apple juice--since I am pregnant and can't drink alcohol the juice/mineral water cocktail really hit the spot. He also gave us one of the cannoli on the house because he said it was small....of course they sent us home with extra delicious bread that they make there as well. If you are looking to recreate the "Lady and the Tramp" moment where Lady and Tramp are sharing a plate of spaghetti this is the place. I love the spaghetti and meatballs because they are big enough to push around with your nose if you are so tempted. Also, the ambience is similar to the movie because Lococo's is intimate and charming. I reccommed that first time diners try the ravioli or clam pizza. If you have room for dessert make your way over to Tango Gelato which is a couple blocks away. The short walk will be good for you after all the carbs you'll pack away at this joint. read more

Their fettuccine alfredo is the worst. I've gotten food poisoning from this place and it was not pleasant at all. All I was vomiting was the pasta and the white sauce. (hint: take the lococo's special, remove the anchovies, and replace them with eggplant. delicious!) lococo's also provided me with my first caprese salad, before it became the salad de notre temps. the mushrooms caruso - sauteed in a garlicky, anchovy, lemony, wine sauce finished with parsley - is off the hook with their housemade flat bread. juice... dipping... amazing. I have fond memories of going to Lo Coco's at age 15 while my Dad talked to me about "the birds and the bees" or how poor I was doing in school. It isn't the pep talk I remember so much, but the anticipation of getting a Lo Coco's Pizza. The Piedmont Pizza is a large (18 inches?) pizza with green onions and ground beef. The moment the pizza enters your mouth, you're assaulted by a mix of flavors. There is a bit of a kick to the sauce and before you can fully understand the awesomeness of the taste, you've eaten another bite. Every inch of that pizza is heaven, including the crust. I've had pizza from Italy, Chicago, and New York, and for me, this is the best. I'll probably get an email from some pizza aficionado explaining how closed off I am from true pizza artistry, but like most great things in this world, taste is subjective. I've never had anything else off the menu because I love the Piedmont Pizza that much. Some things to be aware of before going here: -they take cash and checks. My 2 favorite eateries in the East Bay do not take cards, so it's not a big deal to me. -like most other places on Piedmont Avenue, parking can be a as crazy as a mall the week before Christmas. -there is almost always a wait outside for a table since the the dinning room is small and crowded. -I mostly do take out, so I can't really attest to the quality of the wait staff. -the food is expensive, but totally worth it. Great neighborhood place. We ordered a sausage and mushroom pizza and enjoyed all but about 25% that had to be cut away to be discarded. The crust is made in a way that the outer edge is a thick bubble of bread. Looks interesting, but it's inedible, unless you are really into bread without any pizza ingredients on it.
