This classic ice cream shop has a ton of flavors. We tried about 10 flavors and had trouble deciding which ones to get. After a long debate, we ended up with mint chocolate, mango, and black raspberry -- each would be great on its own (we just couldn't decide on 1 flavor). The triple decker was everything we needed to satisfy the ice cream flavor, will be back to try all the other flavors soon! Came here craving some afternoon sweet treats but didn't want to go all the way to Alameda for the South Shore Loard's location. Seems like from the reviews that this is the original location that just opened after a remodel. The renovated space is pretty nice - gives a vintage corner diner vibe that isn't apparent at the South Shore location (which feels like it is a refurbished deli turned ice cream parlor). Neon lights also gives that feeling of being somewhat transported into a different time period. However, that's where most of my compliments have to end. At 5:30ish there was a line towards the door of about 3-4 parties but only one main person working there (along with who I presume is their daughter) and therefore the service took a lot longer than we had hoped. We got a sundae but for $10 it was a lot smaller than we had expected - other ice cream shops like Clancy's or Lana's gives pretty large single scoops bigger than the entirety of the sundae we got; we also distinctly remember the Loard's at South Shore being quite generous with their servings as well for cheaper. It's a shame because the measly portion we did get was pretty tasty, with the chocolate fudge sauce they topped off being incredibly good - it left us wanting a LOT more. Hopefully this was just a one-off issue, but for the time being we might opt for the South Shore location or other local spots instead for our sweet tooth cravings. read more

Recently visited the Bay Area from out of town for a baseball game and dinner. After dinner, we were craving something sweet and happened to find Loard's Ice Cream nearby. The moment we walked through the door, we were greeted by a sweet young lady named Francesca, who immediately made us feel welcome. The décor was so nostalgic, and we loved being able to sample the flavors. And when I say "Lord," I mean Loard's -- the ice cream was rich, creamy, and absolutely dreamy. I used to work at B&R Ice Cream and have tried plenty of other chain ice creams over the years, but nothing compares to Loard's. You can tell why they've stayed successful for so long. The saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and I love that they've stayed true to the same recipe since the beginning. I'm already dreaming about my next trip to the Bay Area -- or honestly, anywhere I can find a Loard's nearby. I'm officially in love... with Loard's ice cream, that is. And it all started the moment we walked through the door and were greeted by Francesca. I watched her serve every customer with a smile and such a kind, positive attitude. They did a great job on the remodel. This was my first time coming to this location since they reopened. Ice cream scoops are more expensive than I remember and their freezer quarts didn't have ingredients listed on them. We have food allergies in our house so I asked for an ingredient list and one was not available at all which seems odd for a place selling food items. Service was kind. Ice cream was good-tasted sort of like Mitchell's and there is a huge variety of flavors. I liked the horchata and rocky road. So glad this place reopened. It's a leisurely walk from my house or a 3 minute drive. The remodel is very nice and ice cream rich and delicious as ever. We had very pleasant service and enjoyed sitting inside. The one thing that will keep me from coming often is the price- 2 cones came to $20 with tip. Yikes! Those are Fenton's prices. I know they have to recoup the remodel and compensate their staff fairly but it seems like a bad fit for our neighborhood to charge so much. read more

So much for a reopening, 2 adults and 6 kids show up and as the kids are excitedly opening the door the employee stops us and said "we're capping the line" our poor kids were disappointed to not get their first experience at Loard's. It was about 30 minutes before closing and there were about 6 people in line. Hard to understand that reasoning. So beware if you're thinking about going an hour before closing don't bother. Their hours say open until 8pm but take that as 7pm. We'll gladly take our business elsewhere, there's a Loards in Alameda and Castro Valley that I'm sure would appreciate large groups and their business. Bummer because I grew up going to this particular Loard's since my childhood home is below Lincoln Avenue and I attended Bret Harte. Disappointed for sure. read more

I've loved Loard's for two decades and I was ecstatic when they reopened the original location. The redesign aesthetic is beautiful - the neon sign and retro tile is gorgeous. And the ice cream remains the best ice cream I've ever had. However, the two staff members working tonight were the least competent ice cream scoopers I've ever seen. They both moved at a glacial pace. I walked in with my family at 7:45, and it took them 20 minutes to serve three groups. With every group, they could never remember who ordered. For example, one group with someone named Julie had four orders. Every order they called out "Julie!" And every single time they were surprised that Julie was the same group standing directly in front of them, that had just ordered, that had just collected every other order for Julie. Then, after all of this glacial pace and ineffectiveness, at 8:05 one of the announced "we are now closed so we can't do any toppings, just simple scoops." Somehow I got punished for their sluggish pace and inability to do their jobs well? They wouldn't even put whipped cream on my ice cream which I had been looking forward to all day I hope when I come here again these two aren't working. read more

OLIVE was SO amazing! She had TOP TIER customer service and was working so hard to help our group and everyone else in line. My boyfriend decided to surprise my babygirl & me with some ice cream. See in the picture.. he's the cutest. He got me my favorite mocha almond fudge. My babygirl got a scoop of chocolate. He got his favorite butter pecan (which I never knew I could like until I got with him!) LOVE! Loard's Ice Cream has been in my neighborhood for the longest time ever since I was born! They have many selections of flavors and they are always welcomed to give out free samples to try! I'm updating this review today because, recently I discovered a better cost efficient way to save money if your entire family wants ice cream. Before I get started, the cons of doing this hack is... 1) Limited In Flavors 2) Everyone has to agree on one flavor. 3) You have to go to your local grocery store to purchase cones (if needed). 4) you have to wait until you get home to serve the ice cream. Or wherever you want, as long you don't feel bad! So, last night I purchase a quart size ice cream tub for $6 and some change it's already hand packed and ready to go; I bought ice cream cones ($3) from Safeway and brought it bacK home. One tub of ice cream served 5-6 people, depending how big of the scoops you serve. If you purchase one scoop of ice cream with sugar cone, it's already $5 and some change... One junior scoop of I e cream in a cup is already $4 and some change... That's a lot of money if everyone wants the same flavor. Only do this hack if everyone agrees on one flavor and willing to wait to go home and eat. For people who wants it on the go and at that moment still do it! We came here on a weekend and the place had a few people waiting for others. It was our first time there and there was a family there waiting for others. The place is big with high ceilings but there are only about 3-4 small tables out front, with the back serving area comprising most of the creamery. We each got a double scoop and the portions were HUGE. So big that our ice cream was basically our lunch replacement. The ice cream was fresh and there were a lot of flavors to choose from. I got the butter brickle and the coconut pineapple and partner got the coffee and almond ice cream. Back in the day I recall coming up here for an occasional ice cream. My parents would go nuts for the mango ice cream and I wanted anything chocolate. When I enter the store now, there certainly is a bit of nostalgia affecting my rating, but, damn the ice cream is really good. I tend to stick with the chocolatey flavors but have had a pretty good cross section. Can't say enough about the quality. It might be my David vs Goliath attitude but if you hit Dreyers then Loard's, you'll get the instant feedback of how much richer Loard's taste. Secondly the prices are half of Fentons or Dreyers and I'd venture to say less than Starbucks coffee drinks. What you don't is the fancy environment, but I grew up around here so I'm fine with it. For $8 I got a Fudgeanna sundae that was two giant scoops of ice cream, banana, hot fudge, whipped cream, copious nuts and the cherry on top. No wait typically and you get the cross section of people that makes Oakland great. Just writing this review makes me want to get one today. read more

Great neighborhood ice cream shop. Has a small parking lot which is gold these days. I really wish the owners would put in a little effort into decorating the interior. The shop is as basic as it is just enough to have 4 walls and tubs of ice cream to scoop out of and a menu. Interior decoration has do so much to improve customer experience. Comparing it to Fentons, Ben and Jerry's and Baskin Robbins investing a little money into colored posters would give this shop some life it needs. Though not as famous as the other Bay area ice cream parlors, Loard's is among the tastiest; in my opinion, the ice cream here is more flavorful than Fenton's but not as amazing as Mitchell's in SF. This location is the original that was opened in 1950 and the recipes for their ice cream have not changed since that time. I stopped in and had their junior sundae with one scoop of peanut butter fudge and hot fudge topping (4.95$). It was awesome, not too sweet and I could really taste the peanut butter. A little on pricey side in my opinion. I was a little sad they didn't have brownie sundaes per se, and, to my dismay, they were out of their Brownie nut fudge flavor. Hopefully, I'll get to try that next visit. Of note, Loard's, like Mitchell's, has ube ice cream. 3.5 stars overall. The only downside to this place is the location; a bit sketchy next to the liquor store--when I was there someone had just left an empty bottle of something in the middle of a parking spot!
