Every neighborhood should have a great coffee shop, and this is the kind of place that could easily become a daily addiction! The interior is super cute, and you'll see folks equally at home chatting away or flying solo. The staff was very friendly and welcoming as well. The shop offered super interesting flavors of coffee, and I really appreciated that they had a sugar free syrup option as well! I ordered the almond milk latte with sugar free vanilla syrup, the chocolate chip cookie, and the raspberry almond scone. The latte was super smooth and flavorful, and the cookie may have been one of my favorites in the city. It was topped with sea salt and loaded with chocolate chips, but somehow not too sweet. The scone was also buttery and light, with just a hint of sugar from the glaze and raspberry. I could easily have eaten another one! It's safe to say I will be back soon, and highly recommend making a stop!

Met a friend up for coffee here and I thought it was so cute!! Great staff, super friendly and make sure you have everything you need. Smaller but cozy! Their bagels are great, nice and crunchy and super fresh. Excited to come back

Very cute coffee spot with great vibe and service. Execellet bakery choices - one of the best in the town. I came in a Saturday afternoon. The shop definitely reflects the "loaves and witches" vibe with very cute decor. Chairs, furnitures, menu fonts, all fits the atmosphere. I'm especially impressed by their bakery selections - so good! I think it's one of the best bakery selections of a coffee shop in the town (I've been to MANY). I tried their LEMON COOKIE - warm, soft baked, flavorful without being overly sweet. I liked it very much. Also tried their lavander score. The flavor's very good; texture was decent (could be slightly softer just to my personal taste). There were several other bakeries coming out during my hours there, apparently freshly baked. Baristas were very, very friendly. I had mocha latte - the coffee was decent. Not the best coffee I've had but it's decent. I'd definitely come back again just for the cute vibe and their exquisite bakery selections.

a very friendly environment. you walk in and to the right there's someone reading tarot cards and outsides there's people playing some sort of game. I had the espresso tonic (in btw some of the cutest coffee cups i've ever seen) a 3/5. the tonic was not as fizzy as i would want it to be but i'm not eating the coffee shop based off of their tonic, that's not their fault. only reason i'm going with a 4/5 star review is because i wasn't able to try any of their food items. The witches cold brew was super refreshing. a nice go to cold brew with almond milk, sugar and cinnamon. definitely would get it again.

New favorite coffee shop alert! This place is fantastic - from the ambience to the espresso to the baked goods and super friendly staff. We loved spending time in such a welcoming and cool space. Kid-friendly and very welcoming of our 1 & 4 year old. They have high chairs which was a lifesaver. Parking was easy to find right in front. We will definitely be back!

Loaves & Witches is a fun spooky themed cafe that serves great coffee and baked goods. Since it is close to Loyola, expect to find a crowd and a tough time getting a table next to an outlet. I ordered the Coven Cold Brew, which was creamy and flavored with cinnamon & brown sugar. I also tried their Choco-chip cookie which had a crispy edge and soft middle. The place itself is decorated in a cool modern take on a witch's lair. With tasteful wall paper and a tin ceiling, always great. It has plenty of seating around and free WiFi. They have several WiFi options, the correct option as of 1/25 is "L&W 5G - Guest" with PW: cafe&coven

I've been eyeing this place since they opened a little while ago and finally stopped in to wfh the other day. It was a little busy, but I was able to find a table to work and they did a great job getting customers orders placed and out. I liked how they really leaned into the witch theme and how many menu options they had to offer. I'm not a big coffee girlie, but the staff did a great job suggesting something flavorful. The shop is pretty spacious and nicely put together. All ages are welcomed as there were children there enjoying yummy drinks and sweet pastries. I tried the caramel latte and cinnamon roll, yum. I have a peanut/tree nut allergy, so I love that their pastries' display list their ingredients.

Good vibes and tasty pastry! This little corner café space has changed owners numerous times during the 26 years I have lived in this neighborhood. Walking in to Loaves & Witches is the first time I have felt welcomed and comfortable in this space. I had their breakfast pie with a café au lait and it was a truly filling treat! The crust was super flakey and the filling well seasoned. They have events here as well, with monthly poetry nights and music open mic nights. Will be making this spot a regular stop for me

I have no idea how I'm barely finding out about this spot as I've walked past here plenty of times. The place was PACKED on a Sunday afternoon but the line went fairly quick. Despite how busy they were, the cashier was extremely friendly, smiled the entire time, and answered any and all questions from every customer (and apparently everyone had plenty of questions that day haha). I had an oat milk latte which was okay but nothing that truly stood out. I also tried their onion bagel with vegan butter and a vegan blueberry muffin. The bagel was DELICIOUS and I will definitely be coming back for more. The blueberry muffin was pretty good as well. Pastries are a bit pricey but definitely worth it!

Cinnamon roll, Hawks Chocolate, Pesto Roll

The ambiance and decor sets the mood right as you walk in. The tables had candles and their holders were adorned with metal snakes witch (haha) was great to see. It's a very welcoming atmosphere. There were people working on laptops, others reading, and people just there to enjoy food. Definitely a place where people are welcome to spend a good amount of time. The menu is witch themed. The barista was really nice, and gave amazing recommendations regarding the drink. We got the hawks chocolate, cinnamon roll, and pesto roll. The hawks chocolate is very much worth getting. It's a rich chocolate flavor with some vanilla and cinnamon. The frothed milk on top was a great touch. Not too sweet, and a great accompaniment to their food. The cinnamon roll was sweet, warm, and just the texture you want on a Sunday morning. The frosting wasn't too sweet and instead was a pleasant addition to the roll (I'm not a frosting person). My personal favorite was the pesto roll. Warm with a similar texture to the cinnamon roll, but savory instead. The pesto and balsamic glaze was amazing. A strong garlic flavor and possibly one of the best pestos I've ever had. The menu is very vegan and gluten free friendly. We also got the garlic loaf to go, which has a soft fluffy inside with roasted garlic cloves folded in. 10/10 experience.

Rosemary bagel with vegan cream cheese. Plastic cups, plastic utensils, plastic container for cream cheese.
    Maralyn O.

Would've liked this place more if there was not so much plastic. Plastic silverware, plastic water cups, plastic cups of cream cheese, which could easily be eliminated by spreading it on the bagel. That would also eliminate the need for a plastic knife to spread it with. Also had to ask for more cream cheese since serving of cream cheese was so chintzy. Rosemary bagel was tasty, cappuccino was good. Downtown prices. Cashier was friendly .

The americano was nothing special but refreshing on a summer day. The seasonal strawberry matcha was a bit disappointing, due to the lack of matcha flavor (the color was not very vibrant, and the matcha powder itself was likely not super high quality or oxidized) and sweetness. However, I tried the strawberry corn cookie, and it was one of the most delicious cookies I've had. Corn in dessert has been one of my favorites, and the texture of the corn with the strawberry icing to make a sweet and slightly tart summer treat was incredible! Everyone working there was super kind, and if I had more time to hang around, I would definitely bring a laptop and work here.

We were lucky to grab the last small round table for two.  The pastry case was only 40% stocked at this point. We were happy that they still had our favorites -- 2 almond croissants ($14 for 2) and a cappuccino ($5 + $0.50 Oat Milk) to go.  The cashier was very friendly, patient, and welcoming. The decor of the store is modern and charming.  There were a variety of seating options, and many customers were working on their laptops while enjoying their drinks, giving the café a cozy yet lively atmosphere. The bookstore occupies about half of the space and features an impressive collection of books focused on drama and theatre.  If you are interested in theatre, this thoughtfully curated bookstore is for you. We noticed a sign indicating that The Understudy partners with Defloured Bakery, which also partners with a long list of businesses, including another coffee shop in the neighborhood that we frequent a lot. We have enjoyed almond croissants and other baked goods at that café very often, they were just as delicious and large, since they were sourced from the same bakery. However, The Understudy charged $7 for an almond croissant, while the other café charged only $4.50 for the exact same pastry. That's a significant price difference. The cappuccino was another slight disappointment. It was only lukewarm rather than hot, although I am not sure whether the oat milk substitution may have affected the temperature. Judging by how popular The Understudy was during our visit, it's clear that many people appreciate its ambiance, curated bookstore, and friendly service. If those qualities are important to you, you may find the higher prices well worth it.

The only prices they have on their menu are for the THC additions. I've mentioned this to the owner twice (he's a cool guy) but he has always sort of shrugged it off. It bothers me every time I'm in. Sometimes my latte with oat milk comes out different prices. Price transparency is so important for consistency . Not including the prices is a bit elitist, especially when the average drink is $6-$8. You should want folks to come in and comfortably order what they can afford. I hope this suggestion is taken into consideration. The drinks are good and like I said, I keep coming back but this has been a sticking point for me for a year plus.
