Always soooo good! The atmosphere is great for a farm to table restaurant. They even have outdoor seating and a cute indoor bar section too. I typically always get their steak salad and end it with a milkshake...which is always a delight. Today I decided to try something new. I got the black bean quinoa burger and it was tasty! The pesto sauce really made it! The chipotle mayo sauce I didn't love but I still ate it. This had more of a smokey taste to it...not my pallets favorite. For dessert, I ordered the chocolate torte, which came with strawberry gelato and strawberry purée. Hands down the best dessert I've had in a long time! Service was perfect on this gorgeous day! I wish that I could give this place 5 stars because the food was excellent. I tried The Local with an old friend for an early dinner. When we walked in, there was no one to be found on the restaurant side, so we settled for the bar. There were a few people sitting in the booths, but by no means was it busy. For some reason, the service still took forever. It felt like we were searching for the server more than what would be appropriate- especially given the light crowd. My friend and I both ordered buffalo chicken wraps with tater tots. The grilled chicken was not skimpy and the buffalo sauce was just the right amount of heat. Once we got our food, our server disappeared. Although it is nice to have some space and not feel as if the server is staring at you, drink refills are an expectation. On the other hand, we received the check quickly after we were served so it was evident what the priorities were. Overall, I will give this place another try with the hopes of the service improving because the food was spot on! read more

(Disclosure: I was one of the lucky night owls that got to attend this free Yelp Elite dinner at the Local Eatery & Pub a few weeks ago. Insomnia pays!) The $30 dinner per person menu was part of the North-side Nights that ran from Mar. 11-24 (BRING IT BACK!). I chose the endive and radicchio salad as my starter. It's a salad, so how spectacular can it really be? Let me tell you, the honey ricotta was what made the salad oh SO tasty. My favorite part of the meal (other than the great company!) was the main course, which was herb gnocchi w/ asparagus, pea, wild mushroom, HUGE dollop of goat cheese mousse (nom, nom, nom), and smoked beurre blanc. This was actually the first time I've ever had gnocchi and I swear I could eat this everyday. For dessert I HAD to try the ginger & red beet crème brulee. I thought it was a strange combination on paper, but my taste buds were extremely happy. Loved the simple, clean décor, and the staff was super friendly and helpful. I really want this place to do well, but man, all four of our dinners were not good. I ordered the bean soup and cornbread - cornbread was rock hard (couldn't put a fork through it) and the soup had no flavor. My husband had the etouffe which also lacked flavor and the rice was cold and stale. My son's pasta was simply butter and stale pasta. My other son's hamburger was straight from McDonald's quality. We keep giving this restaurant a try about once a year, hoping it will get better, but this is the last time. Very disappointed. read more

We've been supporting this chef-run establishment since it was first opened. Back then, it was the best new place in town! Frog legs, mouth-watering beef tongue cheesesteak, delicious rabbit stew, and even alligator impressed the foodiest of palettes. We couldn't wait to see what would come out of the kitchen next! Fast forward to tonight. After a downward spiral over the past many years, we decided to give it one last try. I'm sure that Gordon Ramsey couldn't even save this place now. Any shred of decency the food menu still had has completely shriveled and died. What used to be magical tots are now unseasoned lunch tray-quality food. Even Culver's serves a better burger! This one was small, greasy, bland and served on a grocery store bun pulled straight out of the bag. The salmon that was supposed to be served over lemon ginger rice with charred bok choy was served on top of barely seasoned white rice with cabbage, carrots and celery mixed in. Gross! And, yes, your customers know the difference between cabbage and bok choy. At least be honest with us! And then there's the service. With only one other table sat in the restaurant side of the building, our server disappeared for a very long time before he took our order and failed to check on us after our food was served until he brought us the bill. No water refills even. What a shame this epic fall from glory has become. Truly a sad representation for such an uppity part of town. (Big, heavy sigh.) read more

I had dinner here with a friend; we were looking for a place that would be interesting, but not crazy crowded on a pre-holiday weekend. We also like the idea of locally sourced food - so nice to see more places doing this! I had a house salad which was quite good; fresh greens, pickled onions, and tomatoes that were actually good even though it is December (I'm guessing those were not local :). The balsamic dressing was fresh tasting; it did not seem bottled! The croutons were even tasty and seemed freshly made. I then had a lamb burger with fries. The lamb was juicy and flavorful cooked to medium. I'd highly recommend getting it done that way if you don't mind the meat pink. I think it would have been not quite as tasty if it were cooked any more. The tomato jam and cheese were delicious complements. The bun was fresh, and not so heavy that it overpowered the burger. The fries were tasty, crisp, and not at all greasy, which I consider a huge plus. The only negatives were that they only have a short beer list, and were in fact out of two of those, and the atmosphere is pretty noisy when the restaurant is full. This is DEFINITELY a family place; there were lots of kids at 7PM on a Saturday. We watched a table of about 8 kids pound each other, wrestle on the floor, and knock over drinks while their parents ate at another table. I felt bad for the servers who had to clean up after that. The Local is probably my overall favorite place to eat in the Indy area. The mixture of high quality local ingredients along with a menu that is always changing at least some of the features make it so you can always have something new and delicious every time you go. On my most recent trip I had a rabbit French dip which was the special for the day. I recently had the opportunity to be on the far north side around lunch time, so I drove over to the The Local (4-16-16). The restaurant is located on the north end of a strip mall, so there is plenty of parking and some outdoor seating. I saw that the restaurant had been named as one of the Top 25 in Indpls Monthly for 2016. That led me to look for suggestions on what to order. I went with the "Bird on a Wire" which is a blackened chicken breast sandwich. It was cooked perfectly and the flavors were complimentary and delicious. I also enjoyed the grilled Brussels Sprouts. Since I was dining by myself, I appreciated that in the bar side of the restaurant, the noise was lessened of some children's party. I was also able to enjoy the playoff game of the Pacers on the multiple big screens. There isn't much atmosphere probably due to its being a part of the strip mall. Portion sizes have gone down and no one asking how the food or experience was. The Cajun Tots still taste great but less found in the basket. I had a yummy seasonal dish with spaghetti squash and shrimp but the four small shrimp barely equaled one large or jumbo size. I offered feedback directly at the restaurant but no follow-up so I'm hoping a review will reach management. Also, please return to rimming the margaritas. So, we kinda gave up on this place a year ago. Because, it was nothing special and the food wasn't as good as it had been om fee different occasions. If it wasnt for the need for a late afternoon cocktail, we might not have made it in at all. So we were drinking some really good stout and the chef, Derrek, came out to the bar and atarted talking to us. We had wanted a snack, a charcuterie and cheese plate. I've been to the Local at least a dozen times and I have two words for you..."Cajun Tots." The atmosphere is classy hipster with oversized booths and chalkboard menus featuring specials on the wall. The bar has a good selection and they've made some obscure drinks without batting an eye. Kids menu is decent and they'll even let me order off it which I love. I love this place, not just because of the tots, which are amazing (and they have good ranch). But because the food that you are eating likely came from the area and if you ask they can probably tell you the specific farm. The menu changes often based on what is in season and the options are creative but not scary adventurous. I find the food to be hearty and savory but still fresh and unique. And of course, because they know where their food is coming from and what's in it, they are awesome at preparing meals for the vegan/GF/allergy crowd. Staff is great, ambiance is fabulous, parking is good, prices are spot on. And tots. Just tots. read more

Wonderful Dining Experience. It was a Saturday night and I had been looking to try this restaurant for quite some time. We were greeted promptly by a friendly hostess and seated immediately. Our service throughout the night was incredible. Friendly and attentive waitress who seemed to know what she was doing. The food was delicious (I wouldn't order the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich again but that's based on personal preference, it was very well made) and they offered a diverse menu with many good choices. The food was prepared in an expected amount of time during the dinner hours, and came out looking great! We also ordered a chocolate torte for dessert that was more than satisfactory. Everyone in our five person party greatly enjoyed their meals last night, but I can say with great certainty that I enjoyed mine the most. After traveling in Asia for two months I did what any proper omnivore girl would do.... head straight to the first restaurant I can think of that serves delicious meat. The Local Eatery & Pub fit the bill perfectly. Asia, you have nothing on fresh cuts of meat from the great state of Indiana. Nothing. Besides the local meat that I can trust won't make me ill (oh, I'm talking to you Asia!), it's the American fare such as ribs, breaded tenderloin, hamburgers, whipped potatoes, and french fries that enticed me. It sounds like bar food, but it's not. It's delicious. It's done with great seasoning and fresh from the farm produce. I decided on the chicken gyro from their regular menu. I would have quickly ordered up the ribs, but they were $21. In fact, all of their market special entrees were all over $16. Yikes! Already a little deflated that I wasn't ordering the ribs, I wasn't expecting a plain old gyro to knock my socks off. Oh, but it did! There were big, juicy strips of chicken inside a pita accented by cucumbers, tomato, feta and tzatziki that would rival any Greek restaurant in town. The gyro was served with a choice of tots or fries. The fries were very tasty and clearly hand-cut. For $10 my taste buds were happy and my tummy was full. As for the rest of the table, they ordered modestly priced hamburgers. My foodie boyfriend and some less adventurous eaters all enjoyed the meal. The general feel of the restaurant is very casual. Nothing stands out about the decor, but it is clean. Parents come with their children to eat here, along side couples on dates. There is a bar separate from the dinning area with televisions. The serving staff were all helpful and prompt. I would certainly make the 45 minute drive from downtown again to eat at this establishment if the prices on the market special menu were a little lower. Some of the specials sounded quite inventive, but for the lack of ambiance inside the restaurant the high prices just didn't jive. read more

I've randomly visited the Local many times since they opened and sadly I think the time has come to stop. Overall, the quality of food, drinks, and service have progressively gotten worse. The service during my last visit was completely indifferent despite a nearly empty restaurant on a Saturday night. The food was decent but not worth it for the price point. No salt on the fries and a tasteless $16 burger. Beet salad was good. If you are looking to get a table on a Saturday and aren't too picky, the Local may be for you, but too many other Pub options to return to the Local for me. read more

We eat at The Local often and it's always great. But for lunch today I had the pork chops in a Vietnamese sauce with rice noodles (sauced with chili peppers) and it was PHENOMENAL! We ate here for the first time this week. Wow, the menu is great, it took me awhile to decide because there are so many good choices. My husband had chicken gyros, fresh, well seasoned and hot (temperature) I ordered the smoked tofu. WOW! I have never had tofu prepared this way and it was amazing. My veggies were also very fresh and the light sauce added a great flavor. Our waitress was friendly, helpful (we told her it was our first time in) and attentive without being overbearing. We will be back for sure to try more menu items. Update: we've bee back a couple of times and each time it exceeds expectations. We recently had Panzanella Salad, Caesar salad with Cajun grilled chicken and the fresh risotto. Risotto is hard to keep fresh and cook well, I know I've attempted it at home many times, they do it very well. Veggies were fresh and not over cooked, rice was perfectly seasoned and hot but not "sitting in a large pot for hours" over cooked which is often how I feel about restaurant risotto (except in Italy where it's pretty amazing ). read more

We went here for our St Patrick's Day celebration. I was so excited as I had heard so many wonderful things. I was so sad to hear the tater tots I had heard so much about were no longer homemade. We started with the humus plate which was wonderful. The pita bread was fantastic. I ordered the Jameson NY Strip steak special which was great. I highly recomend this place as the food is good. Hubby and I ordered the hot wings. The sauce was ok but the wings itself was blah. It wasn't fried enough. My hubby ordered the hen burger and it was just ok. The Cajun fries were good. I ordered the salmon and scallop and it was beyond salty. All I tasted was salt and tons of pepper. For $22, I expected something better. Overall, I didn't like my food. My hubby wasn't happy with his either. And the appetizer wasn't all that. The strawberry shake was good but it comes in a small mason jar. For the price you pay, you'll expect an extra tin or something. Plus, when my hubby went to the bathroom, it smelled like water from the sewer. The quinoa burger was a bit crumbly but still tasty, I mean, it had goat cheese on it! My better half had the lamb burger. Good. But nothing to write home about. Lacking a little flavor. The little one had Mac n cheese with tots (that's my girl!). It was again, good but needed something to make it extra yummy. OH! And my Bloody Mary only gets 2.5 stars. Very blah. Disappointing and very drab. Got the salmon patty, it was dry and over seasoned with something I couldn't quite put my finger on. The Mac and cheese wasn't bad, but there was more bacon than noodles. We waited a good while for our food. The waitress was very nice and knew the menu well. The dessert was lack luster. Overall, not at all impressed, frustrated we spent our money on very plain food. It was pretty busy though, so apparently other Carmelites don't agree. I am so happy with my many trips/visits to this restaurant. I discovered their Lamb burger...which is amazing! ...but they also accommodate my gluten and dairy allergies with gluten free buns & fries, and happily adjust their food prep for me to not include those two things. The local has been one of our best find places to eat but the last few times we went it was disappointing. Last night our dinner was horrible. Service was great as always. I had a po boy shrimp sandwich. The tater tots were great I had never tried them before and am not usually a tater tot fan but they were crispy outside and soft inside. My sandwich unfortunately was over cooked. The shrimp was touch and I could barely eat it. So disappointing. Arrived at 4:55 Friday afternoon and immediately seated and greeted by our server and provided menu and water. I had viewed the menu online so was familiar with it. Noticed that appetizers were half price on Friday before 5 pm. It was now 4:58 so looked for server so we could get an order in for two appetizers to start. No crowd yet as early so we got servers attention and placed order. Server returned in couple minutes saying order was placed at 5:01 so would not be half price. Note server was taking the order just before 5, but not placed until 1 minute after. Server was great, and very apologetic about the situation. Got the impression that this situation has occurred before and they have strict rule and server could not place it at half price. We told server we would skip the appetizers and ordered dinner. Three of us ordered the tenderloin sandwich which was good. Was to come with sauce, but had none...was quickly provided with small container of the sauce. As others have said in their reviews, this is not a typical breaded tenderloin, more like a grilled pork chop. So I got what I expected, but menu or Server should mention this to customer, that as we are in Indiana, we expect it to be pounded, breaded and deep fried, and think some customers would be surprised. Tater tots ok, but no reason they should charge extra for "Cajun" tots which only have dusting of spice. Summary, very average food, good service but should have honored half price on appetizer, as server was taking our order before the 5 pm cutoff. read more

This is the second time we have been here for dinner. The first visit was ok but the second visit was a lot worse. The Good: the porter from bier brewery was great, smokey coffee flavor good choice to pair with a steak. The corn chowder was very rich and hardy, excellent winter time soup. Our servers were very attentive. The Bad: I got the steak and fries. The steak was larger than expected for $20 and was cooked perfectly. The main problem was that it was difficult to cut and even harder to chew. to eat this steak properly you would need a chainsaw to cut through it. To make maters worse when I told the waitress what the problem was and showed her she said sorry and took it away. I assumed that she was going to show the manager, get me a new steak, or both. What I got from her was the check. When I asked her what she was going to do about the steak she told me that she through it away because I didn't like it and she didn't do any comps. First time in and the food was good. The nachos were fantastic. The burger was good yet they forgot the cheese and onions. Our bartender/server was a complete disappointment. It's a shame as a good server/bartender can really make the the experience better or worse no matter what. This guy acted like he hated the world or his life. It was like he was annoyed we were there. Never introduced himself, never acknowledged our order and never thanked us for coming in. In the end we still tipped him as we believe two wrongs don't make a right. My advice to The Local is hire people that love what they do as your employees are a direct reflection of you. read more

I have been holding off on this review for awhile as I wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I have been a HUGE Local fan. It was our go-to place to take people when we wanted a guaranteed good meal. I slapped a 5 star review on this joint a long time ago. Unfortunately, we have had 3 lackluster meals here in a row, and I am not as eager to go back. Don't get me wrong- the food is not bad. But, I haven't had a meal in awhile that knocked my socks off, and the high expectations I once had for my dining experiences here have fallen. I still love their mission of using locally sourced products, the rotating menu of market specials and the good craft brew selection, but something has happened with the execution. They have a nice patio with outdoor seating, so perhaps we will be back for another try in the summer. I won't give up on you Local. read more

Service was excellent. Enjoyed my Kona Ale and the Chocolate Torte. We started with the hummus, which was bland and tasteless. Believe it needed more Tahini and acid. I took the leftovers home thinking it would be better the next day, not so much. My guest was excited to try the Burrata, however the menu did not mention it was drizzled with reduced Balsamic, and my guest is not a fan of Balsamic. I had the pork tenderloin, which was fine, but nothing special. The best thing on the sandwich was the special sauce, creamy, horseradish-y with a nice kick. The Local Eatery has such good potential, I will give them another try and hope they are more on point. read more

The Local has really gone down hill. The menu is nothing to get excited about as well as the food. Burgers ordered medium were well done and almost every person had something wrong with their meal. It really is surprising to me considering this used to be a favorite place of ours and many people I know. They were out of half the menu when we came in for lunch. Seems to be a real lack of management presence. My guess is they are out of business within a year. read more
