I don't think I've been to a speakeasy type bar in SF ever since I've moved back years ago. Granted, I don't go to bars that often, but I'm still surprised it's been a while. I was surprised at how big this place was since all you can see from the street is a sliver of a building with a door. The mood was dark and the music was super loud so it's not the best place to have a deep conversation. I had the Ava Gardener which is pretty much a Moscow Mule with basil instead of mint. I thought it was pretty good and nothing was too overwhelming or underwhelming. I tried sips of a couple other drinks as well and they were all made really well. I came here on a Friday night around 10 pm and was surprised that it was so empty. It was a couple days before Christmas so that could explain the lack of people, but I was expecting it to be packed based on the other reviews I read. The cocktail menu was interesting with quirky names and mixes that were based on old-fashioned drinks I'm assuming. We tried the Ava Gardner, Red Letter Day (horrible), Romper Room, and Long Goodbye (best in my opinion). The overall flavors were sort of medicinal and minty, which I guess is common for these types of drinks. Personally, its not my taste, but if you are a fan of old fashioned cocktails, you will love it. The drinks were pretty strong and the overall presentation was nice. I think the main draw of this place is the atmosphere. The venue is quite large for a san francisco bar and there's plenty of cute little candle-lit tables to sit at (make a reservation ahead of time for these). I'm assuming there's live jazz music some nights, but not the night I came. They were playing 80's music but it was still enjoyable. The service was ok. Since we had a table, a waitress came to take our orders and serve us. She didn't do the best job though and forgot to bring out our waters when we requested them in the beginning. She also mixed up our credit cards with another table. However, I thought this was a really chill place to sit and listen to music. There is a "dresscode" but I saw people in hoodies and baseball caps, so don't worry if you feel under dressed. I will come back here again to see if I can catch the jazz band. read more

LOVE Local Edition. Discovered this place thanks to Yelp and am so glad I did! The 1920's decor is lovely, with old editions of newspapers laid out here and there. Being a huge speakeasy fan, I personally loved the entire experience. There is a huge clock right outside the main door so it is fairly easy to spot and yet not too obvious. Do not need reservations if you go early enough, might be a bit hard to find a table immediately but it is quite a large space. The drinks were pretty good. Although they don't do custom drinks like at some other places, the drinks listed on the menu are awesome. I recommend Local Edition to all those cocktail lovers out there! read more

My favorite speakeasy bar hands down. This atmospheric joint is a gem amongst the many speakeasy's in San Francisco and it does rival Rickhouse for me. Same owners, completely different vibe. I prefer LE just for that fact that it's more intimate and plays old tunes to the sound of Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and newer low key jams. Gets PACKED on the weekends so I recommend earlier on a Friday night. But, it is perfect for a romantic, interesting, and intimate date. read more

Cool atmosphere, but terrible customer service. On 9/14/19 around 11:30, I ordered a Tito's vodka, because I have celiac disease and that's the one vodka I know is safe, the bartender (women, in her 30's black hair with bangs) poured a shot of a different vodka. I kindly told her that the vodka she poured was not what I ordered. She dumped that vodka out and began to pour the Tito's in the same glass without cleaning it. I asked if she could clean the glass first because I have a very sensitive gluten allergy that if ingested would cause me to be sick for hours. Instead of cleaning the glass or simply grabbing new one she insisted on and began arguing that the original vodka she poured was gluten free. I told her I'm not trying to start an argument and again requested a new glass. She grabbed a new glass, slammed it on the bar, and made a "rolling your eyes" type face at me. I finally got my drink, but the interaction sucked and definitely made me not want to come back. read more

First off, I'm not a person who frequents bars or clubs. (Not willingly anyway.) However being out here for work with a colleague, I'll gladly make an acceptation. Upon his sisters suggestion, we found ourselves stopping by the Local Edition. At first it seems, from the outside, like we made a mistake on the address. There was nothing to advertise that there was a speakeasy there (as if historically they ever would.) So off we went into the unmarked building and past the bouncer and down into the rabbit hole we went. As we reached the lower level, the space just opened up! The soft purple glow of their atmospheric lighting lit the place. In the corner was a pianist playing a low and mellow Melody to fill the air! Perhaps because it was the weekday, there were many people there. So I placed my order at the bar and waited for my drink. The bartender was friendly and quite personable. (Not for just wanting a decent tip, but actually holding a conversation.) I wish I could remember the bartender's name and the drink I got, but I wasn't paying attention. Overall, I really liked this place! If I lived nearby, I would easily make this my neighborhood bar. Unfortunately from LA, this would be a very long commute! read more

I wanted to like this place. They charged my card for a $22 glass of scotch that I did not order, I have no idea why it was put on my card and I never signed or saw a receipt for that charge. I called and was told the charge would be refunded and to call back if it wasn't within a week. A week later and no refund, I called back and was told the same thing. I mentioned this was the second call and was assured it would really happen this time. Another week, no refund. I called again and was given an email address and told to email the manager and I would get a response by the next day. I expressed my annoyance at now being asked to send an email after being assured twice already that it would be taken care of. The person said they understood but email was the best course of action at this point. I sent the email. Three days later, no response, and no refund. Guess I will have to get my bank and debit card company involved to hunt down my money. read more

It's underground and ID upon entering of course. These gentlemen guard the stairs to the awesomeness that lies below. Arrived there on time was shown straight to out table, and luckily they reserved a nice table for us. Amazing atmosphere, great cocktails, decent service, would want my drinks to be refiled faster, but not a big deal. This was my first time going to a "speakeasy" type place and I thought it was very nice and fancy, though not what I would expect of a speakeasy. It had expensive Great Gatsby type vibes. My friend left her ID in the car and they would not let her downstairs so she had to run back for it .. That is not a complaint, just an FYI. Also I was told I could not wear a beanie except I saw an older lady wear a beanie and I had major hat hair so that seems unfair. My party of around 6 did not have a reservation, but we were able to find a tall table to sit at after about half an hour. There are definitely lots of people inside, but if you hover people I think it's possible to find a table. If you cannot find a table, the back area is more quiet and if people are OK with standing then the party can stand around cool display cases with typewriters and stuff, I guess. I got an Ava Gardner and it was delicious!! Definitely one of the better cocktails I've had (though it was smallish and priced like Vegas). Overall I enjoyed the ambiance but probably would not return without a reservation. read more

Ok so first of all Jesse is the best server ever! She was the most accommodating and kind to our whole party and welcomed us as well as set us up in the most gracious way. She also recommended drinks for our group before the waiter even came and was spot on (I got the eva gardener and my partner got the local edition and they were amazing!!!). The whole vibe is great but Jesse really takes the cake and kept checking on our party which was such a great addition to the overall experience. Service is good (can be slow at times (15 min for a cocktail), vibe is amazing and drinks are worth the wait. Such a great place to grab some yummy drinks and catch up w the buds 6/5!!! read more

I ordered three double vodka soda, then the drink had tequila taste, 3 friends agreed, asked to change the drink, the staff refused and didn't even taste it. I love a bar that takes reservations! This is a huge space but is also very popular, so I love being able to secure a table without battling other patrons. The cocktails are creative and very well-crafted (though not cheap - but what is in SF?). You will definitely need to show ID at the door, then head downstairs to the hostess stand. They do allow people to walk in (space permitting) - some weekends there is a huge line of people hoping to be admitted without a reservation. read more

I can't believe I've never been here before! BEST place to get drinks in SF! All the drinks I tasted were unique, interesting and DELICIOUS. Top 3 drinks: Ava Gardner, Barbarella and Governor. Downside is that it is goddamn crowded as hell. Expect for all the tables to be taken. Except super long waits at the bar. Recommend coming here though! It's a nice spot. Can't wait to come back! This is a really nice jazz bar to swing by with a great atmosphere, phenomenal drinks, and a nice show! We happened to swing by this place after our trip to Museum of Ice Cream and it was awesome! For drinks, heavily recommend the Long Goodbye and Ava Gardner. They have a nice citrus and aren't too strong but still get the night going. The jazz performers playing are also really chill and the atmosphere was fun! One thing is it's hard to know when they actually do perform though because they go on breaks but when they come out, it really turns the night around. A lot of people went up to dance and it felt like everyone was having a great time. There is plenty of space and lots of seats but I didn't go when it was a weekend so hard to tell if it was a busy night or not. If you find yourself having some extra time and not sure where to go, definitely give this place a swing :) read more

I could give this review based on atmosphere alone. Definitely more creative and more style points than your average bar on Market street. Local Edition has a classy, old fashion speakeasy feel. Right when you enter the door, you're taken downstairs to a dimly lit and intimate lounge and bar. I'm always impressed when I get here, so I always recommend this place to friends if they're trying to impress a date. This also isn't your average hipster crowd. Located in the Financial district, most of the people who come here of a more mature audience. On occasion, to spice up the theme, they even have live jazz band playing. And to take it up a notch with, this place always smells of whiskey (in a good way). Your drink bill can rack up fast, but that's what you pay for when it comes to good alcohol and a good vibes. Whiskey is a little on the heavy side for me, but the friends I've taken here say it's never disappointed them (I could tell - 6 rounds and $300 later. Turn up on a weekday). The last couple times I've been here, I stuck to a glass of wine (I know I know, I go to a whiskey bar and baby some fermented grape juice instead). Not a bad choice though, because they have plenty of selections and a FULL bar, so get creative. Open late and conveniently located (it's also close to Bart), Local Edition is a great choice for any occasion. read more

Really like this bar. Very Speakeasy-ish, you almost pass right by it the first time. It's right in between T-Mobile and Len's crafters. Once you go down the stairs all you see is darkness, candles, typewriters, newspaper clippings and a big bar! I love the bartender's "uniforms", makes me feel like I'm in the 20's still, but with an iPhone that can snapchat the whole thing. You have to make a reservation to sit in the back tables/booths but the tables by the bar are free range. They also have live jazz on some nights.Not sure their exact schedule but I was there on a monday night and they had it then, but I've gone other nights and there wasn't so who knows. I would say the cocktails there are a MUST! They have a specially crafted cocktail for just about any hard liquor you prefer. I'm more of a vodka/gin girl so I got the Barbarella (gin, fruity/fresh), and some drink I can't remember the name of but has Jasmine tea infused vodka in it. Outside food not allowed but you can leave it at the door. Great theming, speakeasy vibe. It's easy to miss from the outside; after checking in with the bouncer you go down into the deceptively large basement. They serve high-end cocktails; my standards are the Local Edition (slight twist on an Old Fashioned) and the Lieutenant Governor. You can get table service or order at the bar. I'd recommend making a reservation if you want a table, especially if you're going on a date. As of now you can make reservations through Yelp easily (disclosure: also as of now, I work for Yelp). There is sometimes a live jazz band playing. At other times the music can be a bit incongruent, with '80s or other music that doesn't fit an old-school newspaper or speakeasy theme. read more

Love this newspaper themed bar which pays homage to its location at the former Examiner printing room in the basement of the Hearst Building and the 50s and 60s, with its decor and music selection. Vintage typewriters can be found displayed throughout the huge, dimly lit open space with red booths lining the walls. There's a stage area in one corner where live performances happen on Saturday nights so the space is also great for events. It's a hidden gem right in the heart of downtown. There is a small door on the street that's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. It is right next to the TMobile store. I like that when you come here, you forget what time it is since there are no windows. It's big and cavernous and fun. It's not stuffy and people are fun and friendly.
