Simply a rare burger with a mound of rice (yes, rice) and some kind of sauce thrown on top, nothing fun or crazy or mildly interesting. Fries were the frozen variety, bummer. A person in our party had the quinoa salad that was supposed to have grilled halloumi- none to be found. The added chicken tasted like it was seasoned with butter and salt. Fried green tomatoes.. if your going to put fried green tomatoes on the menu in the south you'd better bring it.. these have to be the most tasteless I've ever had. We've ben going to Local Republic since they opened, & it is fantastic. The menu changes a LOT, so you never know what their current offerings may be which is a great appeal to this place. The servers have become part of our family - Noelle, Greg, Hunter, Chelsea are wonderful. Then the bartenders - which for us is a really important part of the experience - are incedible. Kyla, Cat, Andrew, Chelsea always spoil us with their special & unique creations. So if you want a plain-Jane experience then do Not go here. First time customer not impressed, although I truly wanted to be. I expected more from this crazily popular eatery. The appetizers were good. The pimento cheese was delicious, but save yourself some money and buy it at the grocery store, tastes just like Palmetto Cheese. The zucchini fritter was really good, except for the puddle of oil it was sitting in, which made the bottom of the fritter mushy. I agree with the other reviewer about the disappointment that was called The Sink Burger. I thought it would be a creative culinary adventure, not a rare burger sitting on a soggy bun topped with the cheapest boring ingredients in the kitchen. I ordered a medium burger, I got a rare burger. Medium is NOT cold red in the middle. As the other reviewer stated, the items on my burger were a total disappointment and frankly, stupid. I got black beans, rice, and a teaspoon of a mystery shredded meat (pork?). I upgraded to the Bacon Mac N Cheese, which was fantastic. The other entree ordered was the country fried steak with fries. Mediocrity at it's finest! The fries look just like Wendy's fast food fries. And that's no compliment. I ordered a Lemon Martini, which was delicious, but served in a very small martini glass filled to the rim. We watched the waitress slow dance it to our table, slopping it as she came. We began our meal with a "Small" of the Pimento Cheese. Its wonderfully done with a dollop of pimento cheese served on toast that's topped with a piece of thick bacon. The bacon is cooked not too crispy so its still nice and chewy. This is accompanied with jalapeños but we got that on the side. If you've been following our blog you'll know that we've been on a pimento cheese kick ever since our interview with Angle Tillman at Phickles Phun Foods in Athens. The Pimento Cheese was a great way to start the meal and we couldn't wait to move on to the entrées! Melanie ordered the Mother Clucker, a sandwich served with a Springer Mountain Chicken Breast and lettuce, tomato and onion. If you're not familiar with Springer Mountain Farms their chicken is 100% All Natural with no antibiotics, steroids, growth stimulants or hormones, and aren't fed animal by-products. Best of all, they're right in North Georgia so this is really part of that farm-to-table trend so popular today. Springer Mountain Farms chicken is popular among chefs throughout Metro Atlanta. Melanie also got the grits to go with her Mother Clucker. She loved her chicken sandwich but thought the grits were just a little to thick for her liking. I ordered the special, which was a Seared Swordfish served on rice with a vegetable mix and topped with a spoonful of a chunky seafood soup. Dear readers, this was absolutely, hands-down one of the best dishes I've eaten in some time. The way the veggies, the fish and the soup topping mixed together was divine. The Seared Swordfish was a special but they need to consider this as a regular menu option. Great work on this one guys! We had a wonderful time at Local Republic that night. I think it makes an awesome place to gather with friends and enjoy a meal. They have limited indoor seating but a nice patio area that is awesome to enjoy now that its getting cooler. The new location offers more seating but still kind of small. Yup now have to make reservations in a popular night unless you don't mine waiting 2 hours. But if you have the time the food is amazing here. But then again their food was amazing before they moved locations. But ideally they should have the spot in the corner where that big pub is. That pub is always empty and food sucks there but it's big with a roof top area. That's what local republic needs!! I would eat here at least once a week if it had less of wait time. The wait staff are the best! They are very informative and nice. Even when you arrive an hour before they close with a screaming baby who's pooped 2-3 times while having dinner. I was a fan when they were at the previous location (a re-purposed service station) and I enjoyed having lunch there. The new location is much nicer and the food and service are as good as I remember. I had the fish tacos (mahi-mahi) with a light pilsner. I ate at the bar and I enjoyed the friendly, slightly hipster atmosphere. This was a late lunch on a Monday. I plan on returning to see what dinner is like. Update: I had dinner with my wife at Local Republic on my birthday. Alayna was our server. I had the Hi Wire Lager, pouched pears for an appetizer, trout as my entree and coffee and cheese cake for dessert. My wife had the Republic Burger. The atmosphere was slightly "tipsier" but there was enough separation between tables so that the inebriated couple at the next table was amusing and not annoying. One of my favorite spots to eat period. Gwinnett needs more places like this. The AJC review I read sums it up perfectly in saying this is the kind of joint you find closer to the city or in downtown Decatur, not in Lawrenceville or outside the perimeter; but I'm absolutely glad to have this here and this place delivers the goods!! Its a small gastropub with a cool, laid back, hipsterish vibe. The service is typically attentive, helpful and very friendly. They also have a nice beer selection if that tickles your fancy. Food wise, they go by the mantra of fresh and never frozen, as this place doesn't even have a freezer. I've been here about 5 times or so, and I've never had a bad meal here. For starters the pimento cheese appetizer or olive tapenade is a great way to start off your meal. A few of the standout dishes are the shrimp and grits, the fish tacos, and the sink burger. Love their bacon mac and cheese as well. Do beware of the Patrick Swayze burger, which has a ghost pepper salsa. The burger itself is tasty but the heat in that salsa is unreal!!....The quality is so consistently good you cant go wrong with pretty much anything on this menu. The portions are fair and food is just downright flavorful and fresh. Lastly, their desserts are to die for. I love their peanut butter pie. I must say this place is not at all cheap, but I say that in a good way. With quality like this, I don't mind spending a little more and getting my money's worth. WARNING: This is a long post because it accompanied to visits to this restaurant My husband and I were supposed to attend a workshop, but it ended up being full to capacity that we didn't make it in even though we had reserved a spot. We ended up running errands and decided to make that day our date night. So I'm always tasked with looking up restaurants because I'm the foodie in the relationship. I like to try different restaurants and I often rely on yelp and their reviewers when selecting restaurants, which is one of the many reasons why I also do yelp reviews. Anyway, I found this restaurant and it was still open on a week day so we decided to try it. What a nice little gem in Lawrenceville. We live in lilburn, but decided to try this place in the downtown area of Lawrenceville. I was pleasantly surprised by all the other local restaurants in the area and I'm sure we will try those too at some point. We went in and were seated right away because of how late it was. Our waitress was JORDAN and she was amazing! I cannot day enough about her. The service was impeccable! She was attentive, present, engaging, polite, helpful, knowledgeable --- all the things you want and expect in your waiter but often don't find or get. Secondly, the food and alcoholic beverages were outstanding! My husband and I both order burgers with fries. My husband ordered the Southpaw with the Patrick Swayze (ghost pepper sauce) on the side and a side of the jerk bbq sauce and homemade fries. I ordered the El Chapo with the Patrick Swayze sauce and jerk bbq sauce and fries and it was delicious!!! The food was so good and so well prepared and the additional condiments really complimented and enhanced the taste of the burger. My husband ordered a beer from their tap and it was a wonderful list and he's a sucker for craft beers on tap. I ordered one of their cocktails the rum daiquiri which was very tasty and well made cocktail. ROUND 2: We went again that Saturday when my parents came in town. Service wasn't as great as it was with JORDAN. It was bad, but it wasn't as exceptional as it was with her. Our waiter didn't check up on us as often and we often had to grab his attention when we needed service- granted the weekend is very busy for this establishment. My mom ordered the same burger my husband got earlier in the week and a side kale salad. The kale salad was good according to her but a pretty sizable side salad portion. My husband and I switched out orders this time. My dad ordered the trout, which he said was delicious. He also order chicken livers as an appetizer. I've never had them before but they were tasty. Also, my dad who is a cook and foodie said it was wonderfully prepared, the best he's ever had. So that is saying a lot! My parents decided to order dessert. They tried the keylime cheesecake. It was tasty and very fresh which made it a bit too tarte for their taste buds, probably because it tasted as though they used real limes and lime zest in making it. They decided to try the P&J bread pudding. Yes, you read that right! Unusual, but good! Even if you don't like bread pudding, it's good and if you do, you're in for a real treat! Note: If you plan on visiting this restaurant on the weekends, make a reservation! It gets really packed and I overheard the hostess tell a walk-in couple the wait was 1-1.5 hours. read more

Delicious food and great service. Absolutely no complaints! If I had to think of one it would be that there were so many interesting things in the menu that I wanted to try. I had the smoked Cornish hen but I have to come back to try the port bao. Lots of Asian flair on the menu. The only weirdness was the guy at the table near us with his daughter or VERY young girlfriend (kind of a winter / spring thing or maybe winter / fetus thing going on there?) was bothering his server with loud stories about some dude who believes the moon landings were faked. A great find for sure. Super hipster place with cool decor, good beer, and funny artisan named food. The beer is fairly priced and the food is delicious. I got the fork and knife (chicken fried steak) and it was one of the best meals I've had in ages. Super tender and the gravy had the perfect flavor. Bartender was awesome and cool to chat with. As a consumer, customer service is everything. To me, it doesn't matter how nice or trendy the interior looks or how amazing the food tastes if the customer service doesn't level up. When service is bad, it kills the entire experience point blank period. With that said, my fam and I walked into Local Republic for the first time and for us, it will be the last time. I'll jump right to the point. Saying our waiter was pretentious is an understatement. Let me share with you some of the dialogue that were exchanged between us and our waiter: Fam member: "how big are the sides?" She was trying to figure out if she could eat the side as a meal since she is a small person in stature (we're talking 80lbs folks). Waiter: "Sides are sides size." Me: thinking to myself "mmmmkayyy" Fam member: "What would you recommend for a side that's good?" Fair question I would say. Not uncommon to ask right? As a waiter who works there, he should be able to expand on what's popular or what he would recommend. Waiter: "I don't know what you like." Me: thinking to myself "jack ass." Fam member: "Are the grits good?" Yet, another fair and common question...even though we know we won't get an honest answer, these are questions we inevitably ask. Am I wrong? Low and behold, we actually got an honest answer this time ... Waiter: "I don't care for them. Came here this past week for a Thursday night dinner. When looking at the online menu, I was excited, but the food just fell wayyyy short of expectations. First off, the fries were extremely greasy/oily. They weren't crispy at all. Not sure if this was just a fluke, but they were awful. The Mac and cheese also wasn't great either. Service was so-so. Ambiance is nice, however the food is mediocre. Came there super hungry so food should taste even better. It's just average. The server wasn't all that refreshing either. He seem like he was there just to collect a paycheck. The worse thing I noticed is that the waiters and waitresses serve the food with holding each plate individually, while having there fingers partially dipped in the food. My husband and I love to travel and one of our favorite things to do is to find local niche restaurants and cafes. We are looking for an experience, not just something to fill our bellies. When we leave we want to be able to spend the car ride home talking about the nuances of our time there. We are trading money not for food but for the experience in its entirety. Local Republic has far exceeded our expectations. To begin with we arrived on a Friday night around 8:30 p.m. and it was packed all the way out the front door. Most everyone waiting were sipping cocktails and chatting happily which gave off the feeling more of being at a sidewalk festival rather than standing in a wait line. There is an art gallery next door so we wandered down there to take a look while we waited to be called for our seat. It was a perfect set up. Looking through the quirky little art gallery and listening to the musician next door walking around serenading everyone with his guitar certainly got the evening started out in the right direction and helped set the stage for what was to come when we entered Local Republic. As we were taken to our outdoor seats we saw art from the same cute little gallery was being displayed on the walls. Knowing that they are involved with other local businesses is most definitely a huge plus. The atmosphere is all at once chaos, fun, funky, hipster, excitement, and sincerity from all of the staff. The open floor plan allows for you to watch the food being prepared by young men and women who look like they are having as much fun creating the food as the customers are having eating it. It becomes apparent immediately that this is not going to be a typical evening out. The place is very small with minimalistic decor. It is a perfect backdrop that does not take attention away from the individual experience of the customer. The craft beers are beyond amazing with bold berry tastes and delicate rose essence. The absolute star of the evening was the surf and turf that we shared. We asked for them to do a little something special for us and exchange the normal shrimp for their apple and bacon stuffed trout with a cinnamon sauce. They were more than happy to create for us a meal that was more of an interactive art piece. The dim outdoor lighting, the softness of the beer, the sounds of laughter and joy coming from both other customers and staff, the smiles on everyone's face no matter which direction you looked, the smell and then there was the texture and actual flavor of the food. Each bite seemed to be better than the one before it. The trout and the apple, the beef and the potatoes, the bacon and cheese, the watermelon and onion, tomato and cilantro! The textures and flavors were absolutely intoxicating. With every single bite it was easy to appreciate the chef's heart and soul that he poured on to that plate. I have eaten excellent meals before but this went beyond just a meal. This was an experience that filled my soul as well as my belly. read more

I visited Local Republic a few weeks ago while away on business. As usual, I spend way way too much time researching where I'm going to eat. I drove about 45 minutes from my hotel to reach this place and I wasn't disappointed. My requirements were good beer selection, delicious food and reasonably priced. I ordered the Jerk Chicken and cold beer. The jerk chicken was totally different than what you would expect. It was a large portion of chicken with what I would consider pico de gallo, rice and beans. Everything was cooked perfectly. The jerk chicken was a bit too spicy for my tastes, but still very good. The beer selection wasn't huge, but it was a very interesting assortment of different beer genres. The service was really good. They were helpful with recommending dishes and beer. I would definitely come back next time I'm in the area. read more
