Zero waste food haul at local scoop!
    Thomas P.

Fun area in San Diego County where you can leave no trace with your food and healthy home + body products. Calm ambience and the service from their staff was really friendly (which is needed if you have your kids running around lol)!

Local Scoop participates in an app called "too good to go" where businesses sell their products in surprise bags for a discounted price (in this case discounting each bag from $18 to $6). The goal is to minimize food waste and incentivize people with food deals. Today I bought 2 surprise bags from local scoop (supposed to be a total value of $36, I paid $12.) this is what I received for $12 (supposedly worth $36.) I'll let you decide if you want to buy product here. (Produce was mostly old bruised). Also worth noting that the employee didn't see that the order included 2 bags so if I didn't say that when I picked up I would have received half of this for $12.

While the line was a bit disorganized who was where, the staff were able to get everyone's orders taken in a reasonable amount of time. Our food came out and we were able to pay and find seating outside to enjoy the summer day. For $17 it was not a bad plate of nachos, the tri tip was absolutely worth it. I definitely want to come back to get a burrito or the fries option next time!

There are also tables outside you can enjoy your food, so it makes it a nice hangout spot. It's also close to the beach so you can take a nice walk before or after getting food. There is a great variety of deli sides, produce, and other items. I would say it's a little pricier than the average market, but it's so nice! I would definitely recommend this place and would go back.

You'll find other frozen items here like desserts and even pizza (yes, I saw frozen pizza!), but why get them when the meat and seafood are the stars? I am not sure what I was expecting (maybe like a grocery store refrigerated and freezer section,) but I was surprised at how it was laid out. It was three aisles of the lower banks of freezers, with full wall freezer along two walls, and a few dry goods which makes sense because everything that they have is frozen at ideally the peak of freshness. It was very clean, looked a bit futuristic and was well coded. With different color signage to indicate where the poultry, beef, pork, seafood and prepared foods were. Easy to head to the section you were looking for. We looked around the store a lot and the folks who work there were very attentive. They asked us a number of times if we needed any help, answered any questions that we had, and even gave us some suggestions and background on certain cuts. We ended up going with some picanha, a couple other types of steaks, and a couple options of seafood. All the pricing was all very reasonable and now we have a fully stocked freezer.

Free samples add to the ambiance, and like Costco, I think it helps get people in, buying the sample items, and more food in general. I am surprised that more stores don't do this. This location seems to be not as big as some of the other locations that I have been in, but I didn't notice any products missing. The one in Rancho (near Spring Valley) just closed. So sad about that. Thankfully, we still have this location. This is such a great spot. The market appeals to shoppers who value freshness, thoughtful sourcing and convenience. There is a huge selected range of fresh produce, including organic and seasonal fruits and vegetables. The meat and seafood department -- my favorite department -- is a standout, offering high-quality cuts of beef, chicken and pork, along with fresh and sushi-grade seafood. The deli and prepared foods section is phenomenal! And it's full service. They have Boar's Head meats and a wide assortment of cheeses, along with house-made salads, sandwiches and ready-to-eat meals. The market also offers a bakery selection with pastries and desserts, as well as artisan breads that pair well with the store's specialty items. My absolute favorite item in this section are the chips, which are fresh, thin, crispy and perfectly salted. I will stop in for the chips alone. Beyond the fresh departments, Harvest carries a thoughtful mix of pantry staples and other products. Shoppers can find specialty oils and vinegars, unique seasonings, sauces, olives and chocolates. The wine selection excellent as well. The overall shopping experience is clean, friendly and personal, and the staff are generally very helpful and knowledgeable. Prices tend to be higher than large grocery chains but, again, this is a specialty store often with much higher quality. One of my favorite grocery stores in San Diego.
