My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the eggplant parmesan. Often this dish is heavy with much greasy fried batter coating but Locanda's is great. Our server was friendly. What's not great about Locanda is the health insurance fee they are now passing on deliberately to customers. No bueno! ** DRINKS ONLY ** Martini Monday... My friend and I decided to end 2024 with a martini lunch in Pleasanton, specifically an espresso martini lunch. We checked out the Yelp reviews to narrow down our choices to three spots: Amalfi; Elia; and, Lokanta. Almafi was our first stop. The interior is nicely decorated and the place had a nice lunch crowd. We grabbed two seats at the (very small) bar and were greeted quickly. Our drinks came out a couple minutes later. The presentation was solid. A portion of the rim is dipped in chocolate and then pistachio. A nice surprise if you aren't allergic to either (it didn't state those items on the menu). There were 3 espresso beans, the only acceptable amount. The presentation definitely got us excited before we even tried it. The taste was on point, absolutely delicious. They pulled a fresh shot of espresso and added some baileys, which is not a traditional espresso martini. The baileys added a nice level of sweetness without a strong baileys flavor. Verdict: While the chocolate & pistachio rimmed glass and the baileys were not what we expected, this was definitely our top pick for the day. I'm going to cut to the chase regarding why I'm giving a 3 star review instead of 5... the food here is excellent and the ambiance is even better (you feel like you're transported to Italy!). Unfortunately, the last time I was here (Friday, Nov. 14) I was with a friend who has a SERIOUS sunflower seed allergy. We ordered the beet salad. He asked our server if there were seeds on the salad (and pointed out it didn't say there were on the menu); He made it clear he's allergic (this is not just a preference). Our server said without a doubt there aren't sunflower seeds on that salad. Sure enough, it was brought to us covered in sunflower seeds (we obviously asked for it to be remade). I have a few issues with this: 1. A server should be familiar with the menu 2. If he/she is unsure, he should ask! Especially if it has to do with an allergy! 3. If someone at his table has an allergy, the server should take the care to bring the food to the table himself (or at least look at it before the food runner brings it). The food was being prepared less than 10ft away from where we were seated for goodness sakes! In this case, the sunflower seeds were easy to spot and avoid. But that's not always the case (for example, seed oil). And this could be lethal! Restaurant staff has to take allergies seriously! I know Locanda Amalfi can do a LOT better. read more

My friend and I had a reservation, but I got there first and was kind of lost. A bunch of staff were standing around by the entrance outside so I advised them of my reservation. They said I need to let someone else know.....Okay...... THEN WHO? There's a group of 4 staff standing about.... why not direct me or help me? But okay, whatever. I finally checked in and got seated as my friend arrived. I won't bother with a reservation if I were to come back, as there was like 2 other parties dining inside. It's cute. I don't care much for this place, my daughters sandwich was delivered to another table and that patron picked a piece up, the waiter quickly ran up and said they were sorry but they had given the wrong sandwich to her, then I watched the waiters run that plate back, and then few minutes later, here it comes out to our table. I am sorry but the other patron picked up half the sandwich, it should have never been brought back to our table. Just that alone, made me dislike this place. Poor value. Portions are small and quality is only slightly above average. $30 for pasta no larger than my fist better be good, but sadly it was mostly noodles with minimal meat/sauce/other. Increase the portion size if you're just going to make average food. The 15 people working were more chatty than the 10 tables occupied so hope you don't mind the constant background noise of the staff for your meal. TVs over the bar make the space even more casual. The quantity felt less (comparing with a restaurant on the same street and similar prices), but was hoping a great taste would compensate for it. I wasn't quite happy. I met an ex-coworker at Locanda, bc DT Pleasanton was centrally located to both of us: I'm glad I did. They serve authentic Italian cuisine, and a number of the staff are from Italy. We shared arancini (not pictured), polpette, polpi and pizza. First of all, the arancini were GBD and nice sized. Secondarily, the meatballs were rich from the good quality meat and savory sauce. Thirdly, the octopus was tender and presented on a bright plate. Lastly, the pizza had nicely seasoned sausage, and a great char on the crust. Regarding the ambiance, there are tables inside and out. Locanda is very busy, esp on a Sat night @ 7 pm. There were a number of large parties, but they have plenty of tables of 2 & 4. I arrived early, and sat at the small bar. Tommaso took excellent care of me until Manuel, our waiter took over. Manuel hails fr Napoli, and we had a quick chat over Napoli pizza, and the rumor that the best pick pockets in the world come fr Napoli - LOL. Manuel recommended the excellent Brunello we had to accompany our light meal. I'm glad Locanda came highly recommended, and I was able to have a taste of real Italy in the East Bay. Locanda Amalfi is a gem of an Italian restaurant. The space is bright, open, and beautifully designed both inside and out. There are no booths, just tables, but the layout still felt inviting. We arrived to a mostly empty dining room and left with it completely full--clearly a popular spot. A lovely surprise was seeing non-alcoholic Prosecco on the menu--rare and much appreciated. We started with the arancini and focaccina bread which came with pesto--the arancini was the standout: cheesy, rich, and served with a sauce so good we dipped our focaccia in it too. For mains, the gnocchi tartufo with black truffle cream sauce was a favorite. I added Italian sausage, which complemented the dish beautifully. The gnocchi was fresh and perfectly cooked. We also loved the panzarotti al porcini with sage cream sauce (a must for sage lovers) and shared a classic margherita pizza that was simple, balanced, and cooked just right. We ended with two desserts: a cannoli and a chocolate cake, both solid finishes to a delicious meal. But what really elevated our experience was the outstanding service. Our water glasses were never empty. Attentive, kind, and seamless--truly some of the best service I've had in a while. The only downside came as the space filled up. The noise level climbed, and it became hard to hear one another. Combined with a rise in temperature, the environment got a bit overstimulating by the end, which made us wrap up sooner than we wanted. Still, the food and service were both 5/5. This is such a cute Italian restaurant! It's located in the heart of downtown Pleasanton and parking wasn't too bad since I came on a weeknight. I walked in with another friend and were seated immediately. There are both outdoor and indoor options. We ordered the foaccaia bread, fritto misoi, and gnocchi tartufo. The gnocchi and truffle creamwas delicious and I wanted to clean up the whole plate, sauce and all, but the portion was so big that I was able to take some home. I like the high energy here and the Italian waiter Julius is very friendly, overall service was good but the food was just OK they just missed the mark in some areas hence only 3 stars. At the first visit we had the Caeser salad which was quite good but second visit they had no Caeser salad only salads with goat cheese which we dont like. We asked for soup, they dont serve soup what Italian restaurant doesn't serve minestrone soup how odd. The bread basket is a joke just hard bread sticks and some old white bread pieces it went to waste no one at our table care for it. Get some Acme bread or offer baked garlic bread as an appetizer at a cost. The Antipasta Locanda Prosciutto, burrata etc was good albeit a bit pricey at $25.00. The Pappardelle Bolognese was pretty good but we were disappointed in the small serving size and we didnt detect any Veal at all as advertised only hamburger. the lobster ravioli in Vodka sauce was not great I tasted no lobster but saw some chunks in it. They are very friendly and always wanting to help and give you whatever you need. The pizza is amazing. I've only ordered via DoorDash so far (three times), and I'm genuinely impressed by how well the food holds up even after a 30-minute delivery -- the textures are still excellent. However -- and this is becoming a deal breaker -- the food is consistently way too salty. Every time I order the eggplant parmigiana, a pizza, and a side pasta, both the pizza and the parm come in noticeably over-salted and the level seems to be going higher with each order. We walked in on a Friday night to share a pizza and a slice of cake for dessert- the food completely WOW'ed me. The bufalina pizza was soft, light, airy and had fresh and bright flavors. The limoncello cake had a light sponge and rich custard. I am definitely coming back to try their other items, especially the truffle gnocchi and burrata/beet salad. One issue was how cramped the inside felt, even though the doors were wide open leading to the outside patio. I am a local Pleasanton resident and don't want to talk negatively about any local business. But in this case, I have been truly disappointed the past two times dining at Locanda Amalfi. Our waiter was very personable and attentive... But the food quality was "okay" at best. Prices for portion size and quality do not add up. There are several places down the street who provide true value for the dollar spent. Then there are surcharge fees which make no sense. When we were first seated, my friends and I took a moment to chat and look over the menu. The waiter returned and, rather abruptly, asked, "Should I stay or leave?", clearly rushing us to order. Came here with a group of 10 to celebrate a birthday. The staffs were all amazing. They brought us all a couple rounds of complimentary shots to celebrate and didn't even charge us extra for bringing our own cake. We of coarse shared some with the staff. We tried a bunch of dishes which included some appetizers, pastas, flat breads and fish. All the pasta dishes were very rich and filling. They seemed hesitant to seat us at our desired choice, even though the place was quite empty, and this persisted throughout our stay. Our servers were not friendly at all. One took a long time to get our drinks order, and the other took a while to take our food order. Neither of them smiled or greeted us. But we saw them greeting other tables. Dinner for 14, celebrating 2 birthdays. Reservations were made well ahead of time to ensure that they could accommodate us at 5:00pm on a Saturday night. The two of us were the first to arrive. We told them that we were with the large birthday party, and they offered to seat us immediately. We were placed at a long table, 6 to a side and 1 at each end. We were offered flat water and told that sparkling was also available. Menus were presented, and we waited for the others to arrive. They trickled in and everyone was seated by 5:15, which was our reservation time. It took a little bit of time for everyone to look at the menu. Finally, decisions were made. We started by ordering 3 appetizers: Brussel Sprouts x2 - 5 - Nice char. Great flavor. Bacon made it smokey. Gamberoni Alla Brace x3 - 5 - Who doesn't love a nice, fat, flavorful prawn? Fritto Misto x2 - 4 - A whole lotta Calamari and 2 Deep-fried Prawns, Aioli, Lemon Wedge. Either make the dish 1/2 & 1/2 or get rid of the Prawns. I understand the concept but when you have more than 2 diners, someone will not get a whole prawn, if any at all. That was followed by more appetizers: Arancini 2x - 5 - Mmmmmm. Cheesy Rice Balls! Octopus 2x - 5 - Tender & tasty! Pane & Olives 2x - 4 - Focaccia & Olive Tapanade. Then the three pizzas: San Daniele Capricciosa Meat Lover We only ordered one of each so we're not going to grade them. I think I got slivers to two flavors and never even saw the third. For entrees, we got two each of three items: Brasato - 3 - Great Polenta, good Demi-Glace, Tough Braised Short Rib. Branzino - 5 - Very tender and well-seasoned. Squid Ink Linguine with Bay Scallops and Grape Tomatoes (Daily Special) - 4 - I'm not a fan of Bay Scallops but these were very good. The Linguine was a bit soft rather than al dente. The squid ink didn't add a lot of flavor to the pasta and yes, we've had squid ink many times before in numerous Italian restaurants. Enzo, our waiter, provided excellent service. Answering all of our questions, helping us to figure out how many orders of each item to place, and just taking good care of us in general. The rest of the staff took care of business as they walked by. Picking up empty plates, keeping our waters full and taking the time to distribute the dishes so everything didn't end up at one end or the other. After our meal had been completed, staff brought out a birthday cake that we had brought with us and sang Happy Birthday to our two celebrants. Then we were discreetly told that we had ten more minutes of table time, and we would have to vacate. Considering that we had been there for a total of 2.5 hours, that was okay. Of course, we also consumed enough food for two table turns plus an unknown number of bottles of wine. My one big disappointment was that the front of the house manager never bothered to come over and introduce himself to us or check to see how we were doing. While I can't say with certainty that he visited every other table, his presence in front of the house was noticed as well as his lack of presence at our table. Our server was very friendly and checked in on us to see how we were doing and if the food was okay. Caesar Salad - The homemade croutons and fresh Parmesan made the salad even better. I actually went back to this dish the most out of everything we ordered. Bolognese - It wasn't too salty, didn't have a strong meaty smell, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. My mom usually avoids meat-based pasta, but this was the dish she kept going back to the most. It's not as heavy as you might expect based on the ingredients and the description on the menu. San Daniele Pizza - All the ingredients tasted fresh and straight out of the oven. I'm pretty picky about pizza dough texture, but they seemed to nail it. The combination of prosciutto, arugula, and a bit of shaved Parmesan on top of a perfectly chewy dough--neither too thick nor too thin--was amazing. You really can't go wrong with this combination. I wish we could've tried their desserts, but we were all too full. I'll definitely have to come back and try them soon. So far, this place is my family's favorite pizza spot in the area. I feel like places usually do a small dessert for occasions but we weren't even acknowledged for a celebration, I'm pretty sure the owner was the guy who sat us too.
