I got about 10 garlicky shrimp with two scoops white rice & a scoop of mac salad. All of this for just $9.99 with tax! What can I say about da grub? Skimpily OUTSTANDING! The portions were generous, and the garlic flavor of the shrimp was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! I only wish I told them to put a little of that garlic sauce on my rice too! Service here was fast & friendly. This is basically a "take-out" joint, as there is NO INDOOR seating. If you want to eat your food right away at the site, there is covered outdoor seating in front of the restaurant. As for me, I just did the grab & go. Tried Loco Moco Drive Inn and overall had a really good experience. Everyone in our group ordered the loco moco and it definitely lived up to the great reviews. The meat was juicy and not dry at all, and the gravy had really good flavor that tied everything together nicely. We also tried the short ribs, which were fairly good. They were a little fattier than expected, but still tender and tasty overall. The mac salad was probably the weakest part of the meal since it was a bit flavorless compared to everything else. We have ordered from here regularly for a long time, but unfortunately this experience has made us decide not to return. I placed an online order for pickup and included specific instructions requesting that the rice and mac salad be packed separately from the entrée. We also included other special instructions for the plates, as we have done successfully in the past. Before leaving the restaurant, I checked the order and noticed that the rice had not been packed separately as requested. When I brought this to the cashier's attention, the manager raised his voice and told me that the mac salad was separate, then pushed the plate back toward me. I showed him the order receipt, which clearly stated that both the rice and mac salad were to be on the side. After looking at the receipt, he acknowledged the mistake. The manager then had the cook remove the rice from the plate and pour the curry into a separate container. Unfortunately, the curry was now mixed with rice. When I explained that I did not want rice mixed into the curry, the manager took it back again and began picking individual grains of rice out of the container. I requested that a new order be prepared instead, but was then told they were sold out. What made this even more disappointing is that this is not the first time I have experienced rude or dismissive behavior from this manager. I have overlooked it in the past because we enjoyed the food and were regular customers, but this interaction was enough to make us reconsider supporting this business. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. What matters is how they are handled. The order instructions were ignored, and when I brought the issue to their attention, I felt dismissed rather than valued as a customer. Instead of renegotiating a higher lease rent, they moved to a Kapahulu location which opened on 9/28/25. Owner Sheng's mission is to "bring affordable and delicious dining options to serve more of the Honolulu residents and visitors." I am somewhat familiar with Loco Moco Drive Inn's offerings, as there is a restaurant location in HI Kai near my home. I understand that Sheng's uncle operates the HI Kai location. As Loco Moco Drive Inn's 5th location on Oahu, this restaurant serves an extensive variety of local and Chinese offerings and comfort food, such as: chicken, pork, beef, seafood, combo plates, healthy plates, saimin, bowls, bento, salads, sandwiches, wok plates, and sides. They also have catering party pans and sets. Due to their grand opening, they are offering a $9.99 mochiko chicken and healthy garlic ahi salad plate. They are also offering 20% off of their entire menu from 9/28/25 to 10/12/25, which excludes the $9.99 specials and party pans. I ordered the mochiko chicken special for takeout at $9.99 with crinkle fries subbing for the rice and mac salad for an additional charge of 75¢. Portions were generous, and a steal at that special price! Taste wise, I prefer the mochiko chicken at the HI Kai location, which is their signature item and is very popular. The Kapahulu's mochiko chicken falls short on taste, crispiness, and crunchiness as compared to the HI Kai location. It also retains more oil than the HI Kai location. Just a personal preference, as I'm sure you will like the Kapahulu's mochiko chicken as well. I love crinkle cut fries for its crispiness and its ability to hold the ketchup. They stayed crispy after the 20-minute drive home. Staff was efficient, friendly, and helpful in taking the order, payment, and communicating it to the cooks. Owner Sheng, as jack of all trades, was in the kitchen to ensure that all was taken care of, and then he went outside to wipe down the tables. Loco Moco's newly 1,000 sq ft of renovated space is next to Panda Express and across Safeway via the parking lot. Most of the interior is an open kitchen, with a larger kitchen in the back, with very little space for customers to place their orders. From afar in the parking lot, we couldn't tell where the front entrance is until we got closer, which is on the inner side of the building. There are dining tables right outside the entrance. The interior and exterior areas of the restaurant are clean. You'll see a cute cartoon character logo of a small local boy in a number of places throughout the restaurant. Sheng notes that it is supposed to be Justin, the youngest of their 3 sons, who is 4 years old. Hours of operation are daily from 10a to 3a. Yes, 3a! The Special Chicken plate was really good. In fact, so good, we had it every time for three visits. The chicken was delicious, moist with a great coating. The plate came with Mac salad and lots of rice. The Special Chicken was a winner. Our favorite meal has been the Steak Salad. The steak was perfectly cooked medium rare for us. The portion is generous. The salad was composed of cucumber, tomato and romaine - al fresh! I satisfied my shrimp cravings with the Garlic Shrimp plate. The shrimp were large with lots of garlic, but they were a bit rubbery (overcooked). The Mac salad was very good without a ton of salt. There was a generous portion of rice. The food took about 15 to prep, which was ok since there were a number of people. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Beef stew with laulau combo sitting on a plate with rice and Mac salad must have weighed at least two pounds of my epicurean delight. Let me say that if you are in the area you will do yourself a big favor to stop by and have a meal here. The food is just awesome. I followed up another time for their garlic shrimp, just simply delicious too. The counter service is friendly and competent. Personnel repeats your order and I like that, no surprises and no mistaken orders and I get what I wanted. The adequate and comfortable seating area of tables and chairs are clean and well monitored by the staff and I appreciate that. The ambiance is highlighted by the comfortable dining area, pleasing color choices on the outdoor gazebo structure and well placed rubbish bins. I appreciate the diners help with preserving the ambiance by not feeding the birds and the staff constantly monitoring the dining area keep the insects at bay. Happy that we have a new clean and convenient place to get a plate lunch nearby. We tried the mochiko chicken which is on special and the chicken katsu curry. Both were pretty good, meaty and nice crunch and the curry sauce tasted good. Wish they were more generous with the curry and the mochiko chicken had a bit more marinade taste. As usually the food was tasty ! I also got a dole lemonade which I've never had before and it was so refreshing! People must really like it because it's always sold out apparently. I got the last one of the day by like 2 lol. Always friendly faces when I pick up my food and still the cleanest loco moco I've been to. I'll be back here again and again when I don't really feel like cooking and I would suggest this to anyone oh p.s I like my gravy all ova lol. It's delicious and creamy read more
