Absolutely incredible food and not a wallet killer! Went out with some of our friends from Holland and they recommended we eat here due to their well known steaks. My friends got steaks and haven't shut up about how phenomenal they are even a few days later. I had the burger and it was cooked to perfection, as well as a perfect bun. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a nice dinner on the water, a good price, and incredible food as atmosphere. Good idea for date night, final dinners with friends, or just a nice night out. After wandering around Central Amsterdam for a day, fueled up on crappy burgers from a random joint on Warmoestraat, this place was a God send. The patio is spacious and gorgeous, and the inside was clean, aesthetic and bustling with good energy. Our waitress was super friendly and efficient and didnt hesitate to tell us that some entree items could be "half sized". The schnitzel I ordered was large, and came with a small portion of a lightly dressed salad (€5,50). I had a side salad as well (€4,50). The schnitzel was great - not dry and deliciously crisp. Great place to try some local food and drinks in Amsterdam. Was brought here by a friend who was my neighbor in Cali but now lives there. She got me to try their local liquor which was similar tasting to vodka. You sip it even though it's in a tiny looking champagne glass. I tried the chicken satay. It's a Dutch version not the Thai version. They have a much better tasing sauce than the Thai peanut sauce. I enjoyed it and it was a big serving. My friend got the tuna steak. Both were good meals. Definitely recommend trying it if you're in Amsterdam. They have a nice view of the waterway since it's right on the waterway in front of main train station. read more

Enjoyed a two double expresso, while snacking on a chicken club with French fries. My boyfriend and I shared as a snack, perfect amount. Total amount was about 26 euros (for reference). This is a very nice café opposite of the central station with a big terrace at the water. I ate an apple cake and drunk an iced coffee which both were delicious. The cafe offers free wifi which didn't work on the day we were there. I would return to this cafe enjoying a tea or something else on the terrace. You have to pay 50 cents when using the toilets even as a guest which made me angry. In return you will get a 50 cents voucher which you can redeem. But we had already paid the cheque. This place has a great location with an awesome deck overlooking the water. It was a quick walk for my husband and I from our hotel. We stopped in for a late lunch and grabbed a seat on the deck. The server came to take our drink orders and we also ordered an appetizer (the bitterballs). A different person brought our drinks and appetizer, and didn't bring napkins or silverware. This wasn't a big issue, but it irritated me since every time I glanced over to try to grab the attention of our server, he was on his phone or just chatting with another server at the bussing station. I FINALLY managed to get his attention by waiving like a lunatic and he came to take our order. My husband ordered the Ossenworst and I opted for the tenderloin with liver, onions and bacon. The food was absolutely amazing! The tenderloin was perfect and practically melted in my mouth. The bitterballs were unimpressionable to me, but my husband liked them. We received next-to-no service after being given our food. We wanted another drink, but the server didn't come over until we were really pressed for time, so we only had enough time to pay the check and leave. After reflecting on our entire trip to Amsterdam, I am just beginning to chalk all my negative interactions with service up to cultural differences. I don't know how else to explain the fact that seemingly everywhere we went while on vacation here seemed to have poor service. Great food, friendly patrons, neat atmospheres - but terrible service. Restaurant looked very nice and had very good drinks. But when it came to the staff, they were very unprofessional and rude. They were not welcoming and made us feel out of place. Granted, we got our food and it was good, but following the dinner we asked the staff to split a fairly large check into a few different ones and their response was nothing more than rude, and their exact words were "we do not have time to do any of that." Understandably if the restaurant does not do that, thats fine but the attitude from the staff was unacceptable and i would not recommend coming here. read more

Our local friend brought us into loetje while speaking very highly of their steaks. The location is ideal, right in front of AmsterdamCentraal Station by the canals( So you can't miss it). I ordered their biefstuk XL with garlic and bread to dip on the sauce and it was not only ideal size but tender, and cooked to pure perfection. Extraordinary steak or how they say " echt lekker " . Our friends ordered the tuna steak and the burger and they also looked delicious! I highly recommend ordering a couple of frites if you're coming with friends to pair with your meals! Came to Loetje with 2 friends that live in Amsterdam because they said it had one of the best steaks in the city. The steak was so flavorful and tender so they didn't steer me wrong! We each got a steak that came on a plate alone with lots of juice/oil to dunk the meat in. The steak is served with slices of white bread of the side if you ask. I went to this Loetje with a large group of 14 others. It was easy to call and get a reservation and we were quickly seated even though we were a few minutes early. The staff was really friendly the entire time to the entire table. They were happy to speak Dutch or English, which ever you preferred. I believe that once you get to 15 people you get a special "limited" menu to order from. But really, it's filled with all the good stuff anyway, so it worked out perfectly. There are still options for vegetarians, which we had two that ordered different items and loved them. I believe one was the tuna steak and one was a large salad. The hit thing at Loetje is the steak. If you go to any of the Loetje locations and you like meat, just get the steak. Don't over think it! The Bali is spicy, so I got the regular which was so incredibly satisfying and delicious. Definitely lived up to the hype. Most of the table got the Bali steak and they loved it. Considering I picked the spot based on who could fit our group and how easy it was for everyone to get there, I think we did great. And everyone actually thanked me for such a good spot! That's when you know you did well :) The fries are also very tasty and, of course, served with mayo. They have a decent wine list and beer list. Overall, a very good experience and I would not hesitate to go back...maybe when it's warm and sunny out! Relatively new location by the train station. Food was excellent and service was great. Highly recommend you begin with the beef carpaccio. Follow that by a tenderloin steak and French fries. Unless you like mayo with your fries, be sure to order them without mayo or ask to have the mayo on the side. Otherwise, the fries will be served with a large pile of mayo on the same plate ruining a large portion of your fries. One of the best steak dinners I have had....anywhere. read more

I visited here twice on a recent visit to Amsterdam. The cafe itself is wonderfully situated, and is worth going just for that - nothing like sitting along the water drinking cold beers whilst on holiday! The first time we went, unfortunately we had a waitress not really interested in doing her job which dampened the experience, however the food was still good and reasonably priced. The following day we visited again for afternoon drinks and nibbles, this time we had a much more attentive waitress who made the experience much more enjoyable, and we enjoyed a few more drinks there than originally planned. So, definitely a place worth going - and if you find yourself served by an uninterested waitress, just ask for another person to look after your table to ensure maximum enjoyment! read more

This being said, I figured with that kind of view, the food ought to be very expensive. It turns out, it was very reasonably priced. We were a bit frightened by the crowd of people in front of the cafe, but inside the building is also canal cruises, a toilet and Iamsterdam information. So don't hesitate and go downstairs - there are plenty of tables and an army of friendly staff waiting to serve you. We had the apple pie and it was really good! If you want to use the toilet (2theloo), ask for the token. As a guest it is free - otherwise you have to pay 80 cents. It is very clean and looks quite new. read more

Smits Koffiehuis is a cosy place at the Amsterdam waterfront beside the central station. Last time I was there it was a little bit tricky to get over there because of the large construction site of the new Amsterdam Underground. When you sit outside on the large wooden patio and take a look around over Prins Hendrikkade and Damrak, feel the fresh air and the trouble of the city. Enjoy some dutch specialties and the international atmosphere at this place. Inside the tavern it was furnished very fancy and traditional. Prices and service are adequate for a touristic place. There might be many better places in all the narrow alleys of this great city, but Smits is a good and central meeting point near to the central station and always okay for a cup of coffee and a slice of a cake. read more

I was in Amsterdam on business and the Italian restaurant that we were recommended was unfortunately closed. This place is right by the Central Train Station, on a boat on the water. It is obviously in a touristy area (right next to a kind of tourist office). However, the setting is nice with a good view. I had the tuna steak which was actually very good. Well seasoned and done to my taste (still pink in the middle but probably on the more well done side of cooked). Probably a bit too well done for most people's taste. However, the salad that we ordered as a side had bacon on top (I don't eat meat, only fish) and had a lot of dressing. They didn't offer any other healthy sides (vegetables or anything) which was a shame as it's always difficult to stay healthy when travelling for business. We were served quickly and it was very casual in there which was good for a quick bite. I think this is a 3/4 star place. They just need more healthy/veggie options. read more

A great lunch with a scenic canal view and at moderate prices! My wife and I were pleasantly surprised and quite pleased with the excellent quality food, the prompt and friendly service and the lovely location of this busy and well managed restaurant. Loetje was recommended by the captain of our hop-on boat tour. The Central Station boat stop offered a short walk to this attractive and obviously very touristy dockside eatery. We ordered salads and a couple sides and everything was tasty, well prepared and served in rather generous portions. We ate with big smiles as we enjoyed the lovely view and did a bit of people watching. Typically, we shy away from this type of restaurant, but we were hungry, tired and in need of a pleasant dinning experience after a busy morning. We definitely chose well and had a very enjoyable meal with interesting, carefully prepared, and delicious food (the large salads were just marvelous and the sides were terrific too). As the servers came by with other diners' orders, we glanced at several very tempting seafood and meat dishes (perhaps for our next visit). Dining at Loetje was an absolutely delightful experience. Went to this place for dinner. Did not have a reservation, but were seated at a table in the sun. When we asked if we could be moved to a shaded table, the "manager" got pretty nasty with us. I was very shocked so we just went back to the sunny table. This seemed to be a theme in Amsterdam in general with the locals being rude to visitors, but that's another story. I had the chicken skewers. I have to say the food was awful. I'm not saying that because the manager was rude, it really was awful. I barely ate any of it. Recommended by the guide on the Hop On Hop Off bus. There is both inside and outside seating but we chose to sit inside. Our waitress was Anouk who did a WONDERFUL job of serving two tired ladies. The Goat Cheese salad I had was amazing -- LOTS of goat cheese!!! And, FRESH!! I thoroughly enjoyed it. We resisted the desserts, but were definitely tempted. read more

The place is entirely built to cater to large groups of tourists. If you try to book a table around 18:00, it is impossible as they are standard booked for tours. It is a steakhouse with just one kind of steak "the Tenderloin". It has been on the menu for over 30 years and it does have a very 90s feel to it, but not in a good way. I am sure you will get better service at one of the other branches of Loetje. If you want steak, go somewhere else. If you want to sit somewhere near the Central Station and drink, then it is an okay place. Just leave this place to the tourists as it is intended. read more

Great spot for bite and beer near the central train station in Old Town. Had the satay an fries. The satay was great! The peanut sauce was rich and satisfying! The fries came with mayonnaise, which I didn't care for, but I should have remembered how fries are done in Europe. Dipping them in the peanut sauce made it all better! Get the steak. It's brilliant. They don't even ask you how you like it as medium rare is the default, which is perfect anyways. Tourist trap - all about getting as much money from you as possible. No catering towards kids. A glass of tap water is available if you buy alcohol - we didn't want to buy our kids alcohol so insisted on the water. Service was incredulous. Bottom line: we felt like tacky tourists.
