I've travelled quite a bit to Sarnia on business. I've heard from local colleagues that I should try Halibut House Fish and Chips. What drew me was the fact that they served haddock as one of the fish, and I have had fond memories of haddock fish fry. My colleague and I went there the other night and we really enjoyed our dinners. Both of us tried the haddock (and I also tried the cod which was also excellent). I loved the accompanying cole slaw which was not mayonnaise based, but vinegar based. The fish was a very large portion. It was not greasy (because they fried it at a high temperature), and it was flavorful. Lots of other places don't pay much attention to frequent change out of their fryer oils which take on a bitter taste and will be imparted to the food. That's because the structure of oil has changed from their use. This was not an issue at Halibut House. I didn't notice any after-taste. My compliments to the crew for paying attention to these details. The batter was very light and it complemented the fish, which was very fresh. As the frequency of my travel there is increasing, they can count on my future visits.

No one offered to clean it, and after being sat, no one came to our table for over 20 minutes. When the waiter brought them, I asked if he could put all of our food in at once if he didn't already. He stated he already had because the kitchen was backed up. After that, we never saw him again. Meanwhile, the couple seated right before us received their drinks, meals, and even dessert. Another table was served three appetizers during the time we sat there waiting. Our table was available after being on a waitlist of 35 minutes at 7:11pm and by 8:30pm we still had not received ANY of our food or seen our waiter again. We left money on the table to cover our drinks and left. To make matters worse, the table next to us remained dirty the entire time we were there, and an 8-top nearby sat covered in dishes the whole evening. Where was the manager? The owner? There was no one walking around apologizing for long wait times, no communication, and absolutely no effort to offer compensation or make things right. I have worked in hospitality in years and the way this night was handled was absolutely careless. I have given this establishment MANY changes, and this was the last straw. An absolute 0/10 experience. This was supposed to be a special Valentine's night out for us, and instead it was frustrating and disappointing. I will not be returning to Freighters, and I will be sharing this experience with others so they don't waste their special occasions the way we did.

The service was extremely slow and it was steady maybe even busy but the long wait started at 11:40, and we finally paid our bill at 2:20. Almost every customer was turned over except us and new customers had come in. It really was ridiculous because no one checked on us after food was delivered. I normally wouldn't complain as The food is good but be ready for a wait because I don't think they keep their customers in any kind of order.
