Next to Ark Chinese Restaurant, this place has become my favorite Chinese veggie locale since moving to Berkeley from Oakland. Their menu is complete with all sorts of soy/tofu/fake meat substitutes and though the atmosphere isn't the most modern, they more than make up for it with the low pricing of meals. I went in there for lunch, and was seated at a table. The tablecloth was dirty and stained. I didn't think much of it, I assumed they had accidentally seated me at a table that hadn't been cleaned. So I point out to the waitress that the tablecloth was dirty. She tries to seat me at another seat - at the same table! She wasn't even slightly bothered by the dirty tablecloth or the fact that it hadn't been cleaned, nor did she make any effort to replace the tablecloth. From the outside, it appears to be a stereotypical, kitschy Chinese hole-in-the-wall. But please, step inside -- have a seat! It's great for vegetarians and pescetarians (only seafood and vegetarian meats here, folks!), and the food does not disappoint. I am in love with their "Eggplant with spicy garlic sauce": heavenly pillows of tender eggplant goodness. The "Mushu vegetables" is delightful. I went with three friends and we tried the Vegetarian dinner for four -- perfect amount of food, almost too much. We took some home. Their lunch specials are also amazing -- so much food, so cheap. Family-owned, packed for lunch, amicable staff and decent service. Although I now live near some the best mock meat restaurant in the country, no one but LLVH can do vegetarian Chinese food right. The Chicken and Green Beans in black bean sauce, Chicken Fried Rice, Spare Ribs, Beef and Broccoli, Wantons, and Veggie Buns are my all time favorites. I've never cared much for the soups, but I'm kind of skived out by cornstarch-thickened junk. The interior leaves a lot to desire and makes for a horrible first impression, but once you get that food in your mouth all is forgiven. Once I brought one of my meat eating friend here convinced she would love it, but the dirty looks she gave me throughout the meal tell me this place is really for vegetarians only. read more

I have been coming here for 15 years and it is consistently good vegetarian chinese food. I haven't had actual meat for so long, I've forgotten what it really tastes like, but this place has good what-I -think-tastes-meaty fake meat. It was funny: Last time I went there, sort-of off peak meal-time, between lunch and dinnertime, I could have sworn that I spied the staff eating a big hunk of pork or something in the back, voraciously I might add. read more

after a disgustingly meaty time in texas, i felt every need to eat all things veggie. so we came here. we ordered a few entrees and soup, including the kung pao "chicken", crispy noodles, and sizzling rice soup, and shockingly, everything was good! i don't know how they replicate the texture of meat, but it was pretty spot on! it didn't really taste like meat, but i didn't feel like i really needed meat after that (but maybe that had something to do with texas?) last note: this place is cheap. as in $50 for five people cheap. yeehaw to that! read more

As a vegetarian, this is my go-to Chinese place around campus. Service is always fast and friendly - as soon as you're seated you're brought tea. I recommend the "vegi-chicken" dishes - in particular the broccoli vegi-chicken and the vegi-chicken with orange sauce. The lunch special is a bargain - soup, an eggroll, and an entree all for ~$5. And they do not skimp on portions, an order from long life always lasts me two meals if not more. read more

Came back and fell in love with the BBQ Chinese Tofu.

Went for the first time about a week ago and will probably be going here from now on from time to time. I went with a friend and we ordered brown rice, "beef" with string beens, fried spring rolls, and the long life sweet and sour "chicken". The best out of the three dishes was the "beef". The flavor was really good and they cooked the beans just right. On the flip side was their "chicken". There was a very thin slice of (I want to say) gluten (but not sure) engulfed in tempura and fried. At first I just thought it was bread until my friend actually pointed out the thin slice of chicken. Also, it didn't have any sour. It was mostly sweet. It was pretty quiet when we went except for the waitress putting dishes away or bussing a nearby table. Other than that, they staff was helpful and not bothersome and the food came quickly. In spite of the chicken I will definately be going back to try out the other vegetarian meals on the menu. And because they are inexpensive, it won't be hard to do. read more

pretty good. came here for lunch. i enjoyed the hot and sour soup, which was nice and hot and sour. the steamed fish special was DELICIOUS. can't think of a better word for it. (it had ginger. FYI, ginger + steamed fish = very delicious in my book) i ordered the spicy szechuan green beans in garlic sauce with mushrooms. it was not spicy at all. so. i would have given this place 5 stars, but... green beans were not spicy enough (after we asked to make it spicy) and the bathroom was in need of a thorough washing. fairly priced. :P read more

OMG!! This place is amazing. Being a new vegan the options in Berkeley are enormous and this small little jewel should definitely be added to the list. I had the Fried tofu ham rice and Life Long tofu Chicken in a spicy garlic sauce. The fried rice was fantastic, the tofu was very good and fresh. I love this place! My friends and I came here spontaneously. We were planning to eat at Lanesplitters, but changed our minds and came across this cheap-vegan Chinese spot. They give generous portions. We ordered Vegi-chicken curry, Vegi-chicken fried rice, and vegetarian chow mein. Since it was only 3 of us, we shared all the dishes and it was very filling! i come here for lunch a few times a month. it's not the best food in the world, but for $5 you get a bowl of hot and sour soup; an egg roll; a big pile of the veggie entree of your choice over brown rice; and you can wash the whole meal down with some tea and a fortune cookie. 9 times out of 10 i get the delicious veggie chicken in spicy garlic sauce. delish! i'm not sure what planet your from, but here on EARTH, that's what we call a deal. with prices like that, it doesn't really matter that the food is predictable. it's a lunch special, not haute cuisine! just smile, eat, and enjoy. read more

Very quick service, attentive refills on water and whatnot, love the space, right off university, but it's really quiet and chill. The food is good, and you get some HUGE portions. The first time I went I was not prepared for the amount of food and didn't end up finishing. Now I know to only go when I'm really running on empty so I can knock it all out. They also give you your own lil pot of tea which is j'adorable. Lunch specials run from 1130-5 I think--so pretty much all day. I ordered sweet and sour pork once and it was kind of tough and chewy, but the broccoli beef is my new go-to, and like I said, there's a ton of it along with a bed of brown rice, a spring roll and a cup of interesting, tasty soup. The whole thing costs about 6.50 and that is a straight up steal for a full ass vegan meal. AND I got a fortune cookie that said simply, "You are very pretty." 6 STARS, LOVE IT!!!! read more

Best vegetarian Chinese food I have ever eaten and I have tried many different Chinese restaurants with imitation meat. The prices are great and the staff go above and beyond even when its busy. The food is always great! My favorite is the vegi ham & broccoli, but love the broccoli & vegi-chicken, and everything else they have. Long Life is great! I would dine here 2 to 3 times a week. Granted the decor could use some renovation but in my personal opinion adds to one of those good "hole in the wall" joints. My personal fav is the vegi beef and broccoli. The lunch specials are extremely cheap and run around $4.50 for a meatless entree with soup and spring roll. They also accommodate pescetarians and have an extensive seafood menu. Unlike Great Wall Vegi Chinese, Long Life serves beer and wine and is a reason I opt to choose this place for dinner over Great Wall. The service is decent and they can accommodate large groups.
