Still it is obviously the best place to get the most for your buck. Our location has some distinct qualities that you may want to know before you go. 1) this is a local gathering place, if your expecting a Costco-RAT-Race, like the mainland, think again. People often stop to give hugs and aloha to friends they see, staying to chat in inconvenient areas to tourist (I am totally guilty of this, and I love seeing my friends, students and their families- you just got to send them your "ALOHA") This may be annoying to some people, but it is a way of life here- so just be happy to have a little slice of aloha. 2) they don't always have stock- Tuesdays are a great day to go. Lastly, 3) checking out. If you choose to self-check out... you may be confused. As it stands now, and for a really long time, there is one line to stand in for 3 lanes of check out. Is it logical: no. Does it confuse visitors and even people like me: yes. For some reason, Costco wants all self-checkout folks to stand in one line and then go calmly and orderly to whichever of the 3 checkout lane openings is free. This really confuses visitors, and sometimes even leaves them with stink eye or scoldings from the locals. After all, those who live on Kauai have been trained to the 1 line system. About 1/2 the time, there is a staff that alerts the next person to go to the available self-check out, but where they are not there, or need to assist someone with self-checkout or review and ID for alcohol: they are not there. I am really not sure why they have kept this single line system, rather than having 3 lines, but I guess there must be some reason for this. Does anyone know? 4) Please be kind to the staff, offer some aloha to them- Q, Carry and Deb are some of my favorite folks. Costco always tolerates me coming in costume as Darth Vadar and Princess Leia. This Costco is part of the aloha experience- please treat it with love. ***** If you are an executive member- this Costco is opening earlier for you! Yeah, even while on vacation where I know for a fact that we 100% packed everything we could possibly need for our trip before leaving home... (Trust me, after filling her suitcase, she still uses the other half of my suitcase so I can carry her toiletry bag, her extra pairs of shoes, and like 12 canisters of sunscreen in every SPF who can think of) And just like that, now MY suitcase is nearly full. But just so you know, I purposely was keeping the other half of my suitcase empty for all of the souvenirs and gifts I was gonna get for people back home... Sorry Gigi, guess you're just gonna get another fridge magnet this year cause that's all I can fit. ;) Anyways... So there we were, once again on the beautiful Island of Kauai... And suddenly my wife remembered she needed something and said "let's go to Target in Lihue, I just want to pick up a couple of things." I of course, knew exactly what that meant... "Just a couple of things" would ultimately turn into a "cart full of stuff." Of course, you can bank on it that every single Target trip will either start or end at their in-store Starbucks. So there we were, walking around the Target in Lihue, Kauai approximately 2,600 miles from home... She picked up the things she originally came in for, grabbed a few snacks for the kids, and decided to get some ingredients to make a few meals back at our condo. But then as we continued walking down the aisles, something caught her eye. We were in the back to school section and she was like... "aww look how cute these lunch bags are for the girls lunches when they start school! Oh and they have matching containers for their school snacks too, we need these!" Mind you... It was the middle of summer. We were on an island. On Vacation. In Paradise. But there we were, shopping for lunch bags. At Target. So I said to my wife... "Lunch Bags?" "Shouldn't we just get these at our Target back home?" "Plus, we don't have room in the suitcases" My wife, "I think you have some space in yours" Needless to say, our girls are rocking their new lunch bags thanks to Dad ;) Ok, I'm being a little dramatic, but hopefully you can relate and enjoyed my little tale. But know that those memes you've seen about going to Target for a few things, but land up with a cart full of stuff are Real! Hey, I'm not gonna lie, some of the stuff in the cart is mine too! So what makes this Target stand out? Well for one... The parking lot has chickens and roosters just chillen out front. Of course, this target has all things Hawaiian and you can definitely find some great local merchandise and gifts that you can't get at your local Target location. The store is well stocked, clean and there are plenty of staff to assist. So.... The next time you travel to Kauai... Fella's, I recommend leaving a little space in your suitcase for that "spontaneous" Target run; your wife will appreciate you! Mahalo from the Mainland!

The Foodland in Princeville on the island of Kauai is a busy place. Has a long line of people for…read morethe hot foods. The ribs were calling me but I needed to get to the airport. Has ample free parking in a cute little mall. There are self checkout machines in Princeville but not in the Foodlands I know on Oahu. I took a pic below. The store is clean and well stocked. Yeah, and I know there's a Big Save in Hanalei but that store is small. I would consider that a grocery store and not a supermarket. So many times I've been there and the one of the refrigerator units isn't working so they're empty. The floors are seriously dilapidated and missing chunks of vinyl. If the headquarters would only invest into this location it would be a place the community would shop for groceries exclusively. They do still have a decent array of poke and hot foods but it could be do much better. I hope one day they will.
