High quality Thai food in an unexpected part of Vancouver. We ordered just about everything on their menu. Nearly everything was fantastic. Their pad thai is far above the average 'lunch special' menus. Their dipping sauces go great with the fried oysters, and the fried chicken was a match for Phnom Penh's famous wings. The barely 900 sqft Longtail Kitchen focuses on fresh seafood based Thai street food and some staple Thai comfort food like Pad Thai and Curry rice bowls. Prices are reasonable at $8 to $12 - comparable to a bowl of tasty pho. Longtail Kitchen is opened by Chef Angus An from Maenam. Maenam is a well loved Thai restaurant in Kits featuring authentic Thai Cuisine with modern twists. Longtail Kitchen features Chang Mai style chicken curry egg noodles, Fresh Turmeric Curry of Ling Cod and Mussels, Chinese influenced Gai-Lan stir fried and homemade roti. The expressed kitchen is another feature at the River Market where it houses Wild Rice, Re-Up BBQ, Wally's Burger, Crepe Des Amis! We have a feeling, we will be hanging out at the River Market lots this year! Although Longtail Kitchen is considered an express quick counter service kitchen, there is nothing short about their flavor profiles and complexities. There are subtleties from the spices that permeates through the broth and heat that does not burn the tongue. It does not cover the flavors of the individual ingredients. 1/2 lb of steamed Salt Spring Island Mussels 10: Clear broth with lemongrass, chilies and bay leaves. Plump fresh mussels. Served with a side of tart spicy sauce for dipping. Pad Thai with Tofu 10 | Prawns 12: Traditional Pad Thai stir fry with bouncy fresh prawns and crushed peanuts. Everything was delicious. Although I did hope the noodles to be on the drier side. Have a stroll along the Fraser River on the River Market Boardwalk any enjoy the sunshine! Fish calls are to die for. One of the best we've ever had. Crispy exterior with a nice dipping sauce. Just enough sauce so it's not drowning. Tamarind wings are interesting, juicy and flavorful. We love wings so this was a slam dunk. Cooked much better than BWW or Wings Stop any day. The pork belly chinese brocolli dish was just OK. Free WiFi if you eat inside the dining hall. Accepts CC and has patio seating reserved for the restaurant facing the tug boats. Excellent friendly service. Highly recommended. read more

Friendly service and tasty food the time I went there. Liked the homemade Thai iced tea and lemongrass water for something different. A little pricy for the portion size but I did enjoy the food and the colourful spacious drive. It's very casual, like a loft or warehouse. I wouldn't make a special trip but I'd definitely stop in again if I was along the quay. read more

I found this restaurant's Facebook page and thought I should try it. I had worked in Bangkok before and had lots good Thai food. I always want to try authentic Thai food. Went there Saturday afternoon around 4pm. First I thought I went to the wrong place since there was nothing look like those pictures I saw on their Facebook and website. All the pictures on their social media, website look like from a nice sit down restaurant. I don't mind if they serve nice authetic Thai food in those disposable containers. As long as the taste is good, I don't care how they present it. I was wrong. We had fried fish balls, Pad Thai, Mee Goreng. It came to just over $30. The price is too high the portion size and the quality of food. The mee goreng was not even close to what a real one should taste like. That is a very common Indonesian dish. They missed the flavor and the noodle they chose was wrong. The pad thai was not bad but just average. Fried fish balls were okay but the price was off. You paid $8 for 7 or 8 deep fired small fish balls (My picture shows half of the order. Started eating before took the pictures). Very disappointed! We made thr trip to the Quay just to try this "restaurant". It should not be called a restaurant. It is inside a food court and all self-served. I will never go back. read more

New West. Quay is probably my main tranquility spots. Thai food is one of my top favourite cuisines. So I can't really ask for more than this combination at Longtail kitchen. My friend and I ordered simmering green curry with fish cakes and red curry with chicken. The spices melted in a harmonious mix; I could taste the coconut, curry powder, cream, chilli, and other fragrance surrounding the swimming veggies and fish cakes. We also enjoyed an order of chicken satay and 2 orders of roti canai, one with sweet condensed milk and the second order with savoury peanut sauce, displayed on a small wooden plank. Their roti is different from most restaurants, darker, more crispy and showing off some grill marks. We had pandanus flavoured drinks, a clear sweet drink with pandanus leaf. It tasted tropical and elevating. Prices on the menu are fair for the quality effort they put into their dishes. read more

Their pad Thai and Singaporean vermicelli are fantastic! My only complaint is it is a bit pricey (about $14 for a single serving, more if you want meat) but it is very good and not disappointing like some other Thai places can be. This is my go to when I have a pad thai craving. read more

One of the small food places in the food court area of the River Market. It is one of the few food places that has its own eating area, even if it is just 4-5 small tables. The price for the food is a bit on the high side, at least for lunch. On this trip, I ordered the Tiger Prawn Curry. The curry was very good, if a bit on the sweet side. It doesn't seem like this is the place if you are looking for some spicy curry. There doesn't seems to be a lot of meat/seafood as part of the curry, which was a bit disappointing. However, they did add an unusually large amount of baby corn into the curry. read more

Portions for the crispy chicken wings were small so if you're sharing you may want to get another order. I've heard a lot about this place so I had high expectations, but they didn't exactly meet my expectations exactly. The portions were small and flavours were good, but I've had better. I ordered the laksa and it was fine. The portion was small but thankfully I have a small appetite and it was enough, though for others it might not be filling. The amount of shredded chicken was great as there was a lot, but overall, I wish it had more flavour. It tasted mostly of spice, which I do like and can take a lot, but the coconut flavour I barely tasted and wished there was more of. My boyfriend ordered the bun bo hue, which I thought was a little odd as this is a Thai restaurant and that's a Vietnamese dish. Taste-wise, I preferred his dish to mine. It was definitely more flavourful with the lemongrass. It still doesn't compare to bun bo hues I get at pho restaurants, but I'd say this is somewhat a fusion dish. In the end, we filled our stomachs but this is not necessarily a place I'd be dying to come back to anytime soon. read more

After reading about this place on vancity buzz, my friends decided to drive to new west (from Richmond) to try it out. We were SO DISSATISFIED with the 3 items we ordered. This is definitely not Thai street food..All 3 items had no taste at all!!!!! I have no idea why there was so much buzz about this place because it is not worth the drive. My wife and I have been to Longtail Kitchen three times now and and each time the food has been delicious. The pad Thai with prawns and tofu are yummy. The gailan with pork belly is delicious. The pad si ew is great. We also had a squash dish (a special not on the menu) that was tasty. We also love the garlic flakes, chopped peanuts, and chili oil that are on the tables for us to use, they really add to the experience. The location along the Fraser River is great as is the atmosphere. It's a great new place! Support it so it sticks around! read more

In my quest to visit as many of the YGEH restos, I decided to visit Longtail when we visited the Quay. We came in at around 3pm and no one was dining in anymore so I was surprised that most of the tables were still filthy. I've been to many market eateries and delis and this was more dirty than charming. The guys behind the counter were nice and friendly and delivered our food to our table. We ordered the Mee Goreng and the Prawn Pad Thai. The dishes were presented beautifully: Mee Goreng came with fresh lettuce leaves, fried onions and lime while the Pad Thai was piled high with crisp bean sprouts and lime on the side. Both dishes were nicely spiced without it becoming too aggresive. Sadly though, that was the only taste I detected in the dishes. They seem to be lacking in salt or fish sauce. The chicken in the Mee Goreng was dry and some of the fried noodles were so hard I had to fish them out of my mouth. The fried onions were not crispy and seem to have been sitting around for awhile. The Pad Thai fared a bit better. It had the complexities of tamarind and palm sugar but it could've used a bit more fish sauce. Maybe next time I'll come back during their busy times and hopefully their flavours will be more on point. read more

Awful service which is hard to believe as it's pretty much self serve but the people who work there have major attitude! AND we were lied to about no MSG in the food. My kids are allergic to MSG so I specifically asked them not to use MSG, and the guy who took my order assured us there's no MSG in their food and yet my kids had a reaction after eating there. This is a sister restaurant of Mae Nam's. Really high quality food court food. We had the pad thai, the green curry with chicken, and the roti. I loved the the green curry but I would avoid it if you aren't a fan of lemon grass... it's very present in the dish. We came for an early dinner on a Sunday. We ordered 3 dishes to eat in the main food court: 1) chicken wings - nice crust with a tasty tamarind sauce 2) pad thai with shrimp - really fresh and authentic. It is a bit spicy so if you can't handle the spice, as for it mild. Lots of peanuts and bean sprouts. 3) pad se iw with beef and quail egg - this was a wide rice noodles stir fried with a dark soy sauce. It was a bit darker than I had expected but the flavour was great. The food was great. The price is higher than a standard food court, about the same price as a sit down restaurant. Although the dishes did not look big, the two of us couldn't finish it all, so ended up taking 1/3 of it home. Definitely coming back. Will try the mussels next time. read more

Longtail is easily one of my favourite restaurants! We've tried at least five dishes so far and everything is incredibly delicious. The chicken wings are the perfect appetizer, although you may find yourself fighting for the last one. The pad thai and pad si ew are both so tasty, I really love how they've made these dishes their own (like the quail eggs in the pad si ew). The curries have such a complex flavour, unlike most standard Thai food you might find. If you're in the neighborhood, a stop at Longtail is absolutely a requirement. Excited it was located on the quay but did not realize it was a counter order cafe style shop in the food court of the quay. Menu was excellent... not a ton of options but everything sounded yummy and seemed well priced. Our party had oysters, pad thai, yellow curry, fish balls, and the roti was excellent - even Helen liked it. Excellent... we will definitely keep in mind next time we are in New West. read more
