Som Tum (Papaya Salad) 3/5 The texture was nice and it tasted refreshing but it is QUITE spicy. I appreciate the authentic Thai spice level but it was too spicy for us. I liked the sourness and I know this rating is a very personal rating based on our spice tolerance. Roti with Curry Sauce 3.75/5 Nice, flaky roti that wasn't too oily. I wish there was a little more sauce. Pad See Ew with Crab Meat 4/5 Great flavor. There was a decent number of clumped up noodle but the portion was great. Good amount of crab as well. Boat Noodle Soup 4.25/5 This was the best boat noodle we had so far. Flavorful broth with generous portion of various meats. There could be an option to get more noodles but my partner got this and she was satisfied with the amount since there were good chunks of meat. Good heat that creeps up. Roselle Drink 3.75-4.5/5 Great compliment to the dishes as it lightened and refreshed our pallette. Slightly sour. It tasted better with the food than by itself. Thai Milk Tea 3.5/5 Good enough. Wasn't the best but wasn't bad. Rainbow Sweet Sticky Rice 4.25/5 We were surprised it came in a cup and that it was soup-ier than we imagined. I was hoping that they had mango sticky rice but we thoroughly enjoyed the coconut I think it's also important to keep in mind that this is a relatively fast paced restaurant. There is some wait so you want to finish your food, pay, and leave. The staff was nice but we could tell that they wanted to keep the flow. We would be coming back again for sure! Whenever I am in the area, I try my best to visit this amazing Thai restaurant. The restaurant is super small, so it is best to go during off-hours to reduce the wait time. Even when we went for a late 2 pm Sunday lunch, the restaurant was full. They have taken over the space beside, so now at least there are a few more tables than before. Our go-to dishes are the fried pork appetizer and tom yum noodle soup. The fried pork is so crispy and succulent, and the tamarind dip is spicy and pairs so well. The tom yum noodle soup has an addicting sour soup with 6 well-sized tiger prawns. The pad see ew is also recommended, especially with their signature crispy pork belly (moo grob). Love the chewy, flat clear noodles it is made with. The Thai milk tea is also delicious and perfect to accompany the spicier dishes. We have also tried their crab curry, boat noodles, and chicken wings, which are all very good too, but I still prefer the go-to dishes above. I saw they used to make khao soi, so I hope one day they will bring that back. Service is no frills. They use some takeout containers and some that are not to serve the food, which is interesting. I've been to Unchai a few times over the years, and it continues to have some of the best Thai food in the city. For this last visit, I was going to watch a movie at 5th Avenue Cinemas, and knowing Unchai was only 2 blocks away, it was an easy choice for lunch. First thing I noticed was they expanded. Previously, they only had a few tables, and couldn't fit more than 12 people inside. Looks like they took over the restaurant space that was beside it, so they have at least tripled the space for people to dine in. We ordered two things: - Boat Noodle with Pork: Excellent. Not many places make Boat Noodle. I've tried this dish in multiple cities, and I still think Unchai has the best version I've ever had. Packs a punch of umami, and a fair amount of heat. My must have dish every time I visit. - Khao Pad Pu: Very good. A good fried rice has "wok hei", and this definitely had it. Great dish. A good counterpoint to the Boat Noodle since this rice dish is more mild in flavour. Service was quite good. This place has always been very casual, but the server did all the right things and took the extra time to suggest how best to use available condiments to add to our dishes. Overall, another great meal. Fantastic food, good service, more reasonable prices. It's our first time going to Unchai after their renovation earlier this year. Their store is bigger now with slightly more seats. Their food is still as good as before the renovation! We tried three dishes this time. We had MOO TOD PRIK TAI DUM as appetizer. It's fried pork loin with tamarind dipping sauce. The pork was surprisingly lean yet tender. It somehow reminded me of McNuggets but of course better. We had PAD PONG GARREE CRAB MEAT (turmeric curry with crab meat) and PAD KEE MAO CRAB MEAT (stir fired sheet noodles with crab meat) as our mains. Both dishes came with impressive amount of crab chunks. They were very flavorful and delicious. The curry was smooth and went so well with rice. The Pad Kee Mao was very well done too! The noodles were chewy, with layers of tastes - savory and herbal (lemongrass/ lemon leaves?) and it has wok hei too! Service was good. Servers were helpful and friendly! The taste and portion was good for the money. The only down side is that there's no free parking around the area. If parking is easier, I would go there more often! read more

I usually eat Thai food at least twice a month, and although I love trying new restaurants, I keep coming back to Unchai. Unchai makes an amazing pad thai with their signature crispy pork belly (Moo Grob), which is my favorite! They also serve delicious curries, which I believe are made from scratch. Loved it! So this Thai Food was different than the same dishes at many US Thai restaurants. I'm guessing this was more authentic. We shared 2 dishes: - Pad Thai with Tofu - Green Curry with Chicken We didn't specify a spice level and both dishes had a bit of heat to them. Just about right for us actually. The Pad Thai had some clear wide noodles. Very good. It also had some green vegetable in it. It was a great dish. The Green Curry was also very good. The portions are large. SEMervice is super friendly and they turnover tables fast so the wait is a lot less than anticipated. There is a small parklet/patio. Do not exoect a ton of tables as this place is a hole in the wall. What stands out is the use of authentic ingredients including pea eggplant and homemade curry pastes. On the negative side, they do use disposable containers for anything without a sauce and for drinks. I ordered delivery, and perhaps it was my fault (I had an upset stomach) that I ordered the Pad Thai and roti curry, which probably did not engender love from the kitchen. The Pad Thai, when it arrived (not supposedly long after if was made) was glued together. I asked for no peanuts, but the it was full of peanuts. It was surprisingly bland too. Luckily, I had some tamarind paste and a few other things to make it less so. The roti was quite delicious. Truly quite lovely. The curry was not terribly special, but good. A bit more curry would have been nice. Obviously, I'm sure that if I went there in-person and ordered like I had an iron gut, the food would be phenomenal. But if you have dietary issues that make you choose "safer" options, this might not be the best choice. I look forward to trying again when I am able to be less fearless in my ordering. read more

Look no further... this is without question the best Thai restaurant in Vancouver! Unchai comes closest to being in Thailand when it comes to both menu and authentic flavour. Nobody else comes close. O have never had crispy pork as good as this outside of Thailand, and have NEVER seen a sauce in a vancouver Thai place that has duck blood as a a component before coming here. There's only four wee tables, so if you're looking for a sit down experience, you may have to wait. They do a very brisk takeout service, as well as all the food delivery companies. It's clean, tiny, and bright, but if close your eyes and take a bite you could swear that you're back in some back alley in Thailand. Almost all Thai places in town serve the same boring dreck: yellow and red chicken currries, lame pad Thai (what no dried shrimp or fish sauce???), and maybe a stir fried beef with basil. Meh... Unchai does a much deeper dive into the cuisine. If you're not used to the bold flavours and textures of real Thai food, this place might be challenging. This place is legit. Service was good! Our server seated us immediately and came by several times to check in with us during our stay. She got our food out in a timely manner and was helpful in answering questions on the menu. The food was fantastic! We order khao soi, chicken wings, crispy pork, pad see ew, and green curry. All were very tasty and seasoned perfectly. Spice was on point. The only downside would be that this place is in a tiny spot with limited seating. We sat outside in their seating area, but the weather was cool enough to sit and eat. All the cars kept driving by and it was quite noisy to hear others in my party. read more

An unassuming Thai restaurant from the outside when I first walked in - it has the homey feeling of a local mom and pop shop. They have three small tables inside which was quickly filled with people for lunch on a weekend. We got a curry dish along with the moo grob pad Thai. If you enjoy spicy foods, this is the place for you! If you can't handle spicy foods too well, then I suggest trying another thai place!! Heard great reviews about this place and had to come check it out! It was packed here around 6:30PM - tables were all full and there were a handful of people waiting outside as well! It was a 40 min wait for a table, and about 20-30 mins for takeout. Also found out that the stars '*' on the menu mean the spice level - ranging from one (least spicy) to three stars (most spicy). We opted for takeout and planned to eat at some of the benches around the area. Got a pad thai with shrimp ($22.50) and a Gang Kua with Chicken ($25.50). Although both of the dishes were single *, I personally found both of them too spicy for me! Pad thai with shrimp: Enjoyed this a little more but found the spice level really kicking in after ~10 bites, the shrimp was nice and fresh but felt that the dish overall was a little bland other than the spiciness Gang Kua with chicken: I prefer my curries to be a little sweeter, but this one just tasted like spicy coconut milk with chicken bits in it :( read more

Ordered for takeout, still delicious after 45 minute transport time. Items were well packed and holes made in lid for ventilation. Tip: unstack them if driving so the bottom containers can still vent. Prices seem high for a hole in the wall, however the authenticity, flavors and quality of ingredients substantiate the price. For two of us, the leftovers were almost enough for another meal. KHUA KLING Deliciously spicy, herbaceous and extremely flavorful. For me the spice level was bearable in small bites along with rice. (Super fragrant jasmine rice which I asked to be packed separately, just in case dish was too spicy.) Be careful of the packed chili sauce. Mine popped open and I was teary and sneezy for the next 1/2 hour. PAD KEE MAO MOO GROB Spice level was zero, everywhere else I've had pad kee mao spice level is 3 or 4 out of 5. Maybe I was supposed to ask for spice? Regardless it was still delicious with a generous portion of deep fried pork belly which was still crispy. Noodles were also different, more like thick and more starchy than rice noodle (maybe tapioca or potato starch noodles?) It was thicker, chewier and not mushy like 100% rice noodle would have been. KHAO PAD MOO TOD Fried rice was typical Thai fried rice and not overly oily. Also did not notice any spice, not as flavorful as pad kee mao but was well seasoned. The fried pork jowl, although no longer crispy, was juicy and perfectly cooked. STICKY RICE SIDE This was the only disappointment. $4 for a portion size about 2/3 of a hockey puck. It was densely packed as it should be but was either not fresh or was undercooked, or both because it had different textures within: grainy, tough or rubbery. Though not 100% perfect, giving 5/5 because after tasting just a forkful of each, hubby and I were both taking about which dishes to try next time. Was too eager and hungry to snap photos. Ok... this place is a hole in the wall with very little seating. If you happen to sit inside, you're also sitting in the kitchen which was an experience on its own. Absolutely loved the food! First time I've had Thai food that is so unique and clearly differentiates from the others that I've had thus far. Must get: Their wings!!!! Wow. It was so damn good, we ordered 2 more portions the next day. When on vacation, you tend not to eat at the same place twice but this is solid. This wonderful hole in the wall, from what I understand, is fairly new to Vancouver. It's smaller than the kitchen in your home, and only has 4 tables for two for dine-in. Evidently, takeout is their primary service. The menu isn't huge, but there are a lot of unique dishes that I haven't seen on Thai menus at the typical places I've ever been. The pad Thai was different than pad Thai's I've ever had- but it did have an authentic home-cooked meal feel to it. The food was tasty, fresh, quality. The service was friendly and quick. I'm shocked we managed to get a table on a Friday night, given the limited space. The place was constantly buzzing with takeout and delivery orders, and as soon as a table was vacant it was backfilled. Unchai is one of those restaurants that I've heard of over and over again at the peak of covid (March 2020). In my mind they were one of the first few restaurants showing an outpour of support to our frontline workers while everyone else was busy maneuvering the work-from-home lifestyle. That's how they made my must-go list. Though they are currently not offering dine-in, their patio and sidewalk seating is sufficient for 3-4 small parties, not particularly suitable for large parties FYI. The sidewalk patio channels night market vibes across Asia, so that's a plus in my books! I came here determined to try their thick glass noodles, something like a Drunken Noodle Dish would hit the spot. My party ordered the Pad Ki Mao Crab Meat, a Papaya Salad and a Roti with Curry Sauce. The Pad Ki Mao is a stir fried thick noodle dish, made fresh to order. I've never had this type of noodles in a Thai dish before, this is a first for me and I enjoyed it. The noodles were chewy, flavourful, and held up the sauciness of the dish very well. This dish is also served with a nice serving of crab meat. Portion size was a teeny bit smaller than I expected for a $20 dish served in a small take out container. Nonetheless I can see myself coming back for this specific dish. The papaya salad was a nice refreshing bite in between the piping hot stir fry and the mellow crispy roti appy. They serve this dish with a generous portion of prawns (tiger sized), slices of Vietnamese ham, fried pork skin and a small green salad on the side. I'd consider this more authentic than a few in the city, because a mix in of cold vermicelli noodles is incorporated in the mix. Note: this dish is very spicy, even at 'mild'. Be warned. The roti appy ordered had a nice crunch to it, it's thinner and much less flaky / layered than the normal roti pratas served around town. The curry dip was delicious though! Nice, mellow and creamy. Dining in is going to be hard because there are only 2 tables and i think they converted their main dining area into a kitchen to help with take out, which is totally understandable in these times! This is my new fave Thai place in Vancouver. I have been to Thailand many times and have studied with some of the local chefs. The depth and complexity of flavours in these dishes rivals those back in Thailand. I was also really happy to see such unique and original dishes on the menu besides the usual items you always see at Thai restaurants in Vancouver. I got really tired of seeing all the same-old dishes that I stopped eating at Thai restaurants here. But at the urging of a friend, I tried Unchai and I am so impressed. Every dish we tried (and there were many) was packed with flavour and hit all the Thai notes of salty, sweet, spicy and sour. The only drawback is the tiny size of the place. Luckily, the weather was nice and we could sit in their streatery right on Burrard St. With all the cars rushing by, it felt like I was right back in Thailand. Amazing. We returned (exactly a year later by luck) and it was just as good as before! I had forgotten that the portions were actually quite generous and how they did not have really wet and oily noodles, leaving you feeling over stuffed and greasy! Ordered basically the same things (pad thai, pad si ew, thai fried rice) but with a stir fried curry crab and green curry this time. The green curry was flavourful and not too spicy but they give plenty of chicken breast! We absolutely adored the stir fried curry crab which was actually quite spicy but had a very generous portion of crab. The egg, onions and crab stir fried together made a perfect topping for white rice and we couldn't stop eating this one! I love how their noodles are not too soft and tasted great but did not have anything too over powering (ie: there was not too much salt). They are quite busy with a very small kitchen but they had quite a few takeout orders tonight (hooray for them!!). I have been wanting to try Unchai for a year after Hot Thai Kitchen recommended it. I tried going once before but they had no seats (only inside seating for 8) and were closing at 8 and it was 7:30. Tonight I finally got take out. $80 for 3 dishes. The pad thai was terrible. Absolutely awful. Noodles were clumped together, it was bland, there were like 3 shrimp and they were not deveined. I have taken pad thai out from dozens of places and never had it this bad - and never clumped into a brick. I got some crab rice dish they list as their specialty. The rice had the texture of minute rice. It was really awful. I honestly wondered if I got worse food because I didn't give them their minimum 15% tip. Considering they are mostly takeout, it's pretty cheeky to expect up to 25% tips! The Tom Yum soup was good and the prawns in that were good - so they can cook them but for some reason that pad thai was horrid. So, so overpriced and so, so disappointing. I will never darken their door again. I would give them 1.5 stars but did like the soup so rounding up to 2. read more

It's a small spot and there's no seating inside (at least currently). There are a few tables outside. They are super busy (tons of orders to go and for delivery). You order and pay then the food is brought out to you in to go containers and disposable chopsticks. I ordered the pad si-ew and tried a bite of the larb. When ordering I wasn't asked about the spice level and it slipped my mind too. It was a little too spicy for me (I would say medium) and the larb was extremely spicy. The portion of the pad si-ew was a lot. Overall the prices were higher than what I thought it would be but given the serving size it's not bad. The noodles were interesting in the pad si-ew, they are quite translucent. Delicious. I wish there was more meat and vegetables though. read more

A friend told me about this place as they had an enjoyable dinner. Went here for dinner on Wednesday at 6pm and no line up but I did see a wait list board should the little restaurant be full. The menu is small which I like. For 2 of us, we ordered the roti with curry sauce (crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Enjoyed it), fried chicken wings (so light and crispy. Came out hot and it was delicious. A tad more expensive at $8.99 for 6 pieces but worth it) and pad ki mao with pork (rice sheet noodles stir fried with gai lan and veggies). Luckily, we ordered 3 items to start and we were full but not stuff. I truly enjoyed all the items we order, service was friendly and efficient, and we ate and left under 1 hour and 15 mins. I would definitely come back to try their noodle soups like Khao Soi Curry Noodles as I enjoyed this Northern dish in Chiang Mai and was happy to see it on the menu. As this a a small restaurant the kitchen was right behind me. I loved hearing the wok getting a nice workout as the wok hei really shined in the pad ki mao. However, don't wear your best coat as my coat had a nice lingering wok hei smell afterwards and I had to air it out. Not complaining but just be aware of your best clothing. WOW. I am always on the look out for Thai food in Vancouver and was surprised it took me so long to try Unchai. I was blown away by the three dishes we ordered and will be back ASAP. We were lucky and snagged one of three tables and enjoyed our food hot off the wok. I read somewhere that Unchai is expanding and srsly hope this is true!! My fave was the Chicken Pad See Ew. I order this at every thai resto and don't think anything else compares anymore. 100% obsessed with the glass noodles they use. They add a nice chew and soak up the sauce perfectly. What a fabulous dinner! Cute sidewalk dining and we had perfect weather to boot. I got the Pad Kee Mao with crab, and my friend got the Pad Ga Pao Moo Grob (which our waiter explained is the most popular and beloved dish in Vietnam), and an order of the Fried Chicken Wings. The wings alone would've made this place 5 stars, but everything was delicious, prepared beautifully and served in less than 10 minutes from the time we ordered. When I saw my foodie friends posting about this restaurant a couple weeks ago, I knew I had to try it because I LOVE trying out new restaurants. Actually this place isn't that new. My friend and I went for lunch today and I didn't realize that it's quite small (less than 20 people seating). They were full so we put our names on the waiting list (which was conveniently hung on the wall). We waited for 20 minutes. The menu was one page double sided with classic thai dishes. We ordered papaya salad, deep fried chicken wings (HIGHLY recommended by my friend) and pad thai with shrimps. The food came within 10 minutes. The papaya salad was delicious but a bit too spicy to my liking. I felt it was much spicier compared to the normal ones I usually had. The deep fried chicken wings were SUPER CRISPY and came with some sort of sauce that is similar to fish sauce. The pad thai was super authentic and had wok hay (in Chinese it means that it was stir-fry over high heat). This is a good thing. Overall, I really enjoyed the dishes but the only downside is there's no desserts for lunch. They only have that during dinner so that means I have to come back for dinner. read more

We popped in around lunch time on a weekday and didn't have to wait. This restaurant only has a few tables so it's very possible that you'd have to wait. The food was delicious!! The boat noodles were so savory with a deep bold broth. A must try is their fish curry it was my favorite!!! Will be back to try more dishes. read more

Favorite Thai food in the city. Very small room, best for takeout rather than waiting on a table. The chicken wings are a MUST!

Squeezed into this tiny space for a get-together with friends. They did accept a reservation, but get really anxious if your party does arrive on time and they clearly have people waiting to dine-in. It's a really small space so every customer is precious. TIP: Don't be late! And expect to be asked if it'll be okay if they take away seats if not enough of your party shows up on time. Roti with curry sauces ($4.99) -It's a Thai restaurant offering a Malaysian/Singaporean staple. That's ominous to begin with but I'm a sucker for roti so of course I had to order it. -The roti looks like it got fried into a crunchy crisp here and cut too large (plus it's now too stiff) to properly fit into the little cup of coconut flavoured curry. -You're ordering roti in a Thai restaurant, so be prepared for something different. If you need your roti to be close to the Malaysian or Singaporean style, go somewhere else for it. -Also price per portion is atrocious. Watch those 99 cents and just round up to the nearest dollar. Fried Chicken Wings ($8.99) -Price feels atrocious. It's more than a dollar a wing. -If you can somehow overlook the price though, the seasoning and crispiness make this a winner. Even when it's cooled down to room temperature later, there was good crunch to it. -Sweet-savory seasoning makes it tasty, plus it was still juicy inside. Try a bite before you dip it in the unnecessary sauce. Pad Thai Tofu with shrimp ($11.99 +$3 for shrimp, crispy pork, or chicken) tofu, egg, chive, bean sprout, peanuts, salted radish -"Shrimp" turned out to be prawns, not baby prawns. Not champion-sized tiger prawns either, but respectable enough to be called prawns. -Taste is okay. Like a lot of other things we ordered at Unchai, it hovers around mediocre to good and is therefore disappointing because of the portion of carby stuff compared to other Thai restaurants that just stack on the filling-ness with rice and noodles. Boat Noodles Soup ($13.99) Pork meat, pork balls, pork blood, coriander, green onion, bean sprout, celery. -Not overly sweet but it continues the everything's sweet theme. -Pork blood is dissolved in the soup rather than the boiled chunks. -Taste is okay. More of a novelty than a must-try. Unchai Curry Chicken ($14.99) Red Thai curry based in Unchai style with gai lan, long bean, Thai eggplant, bell pepper, Thai basil -Not spicy at all and on the sweet side like pretty much everything we ordered. -If you need your curry to be spicy-hot, better call ahead and ask first. With the rice this is probably your best bet for bang-for-your-buck filling meal dinner, passable at $15 for the tastiness. read more

Unchai Thai boasts distinctly different Thai flavors. The Pad See Ew is tangier and more texturous than the usual - and the fish curry recommended by our server was delicious- and unlike any other Thai curry I've had. Unchai steers clear of the heavy handed fish sauce and sweetness that many Thai places rely upon. I would visit again - without the kids. Not the most kid- friendly Thai, but unique and worth trying. read more
