This is hands down my favourite no-frills Thai restaurant. The food is consistently a knockout. Our go-to is the Pad Gra Prow Combo - massive portions of chicken and pork over rice, two fried eggs, crisp cucumbers, and a clear soup on the side. It's the kind of plate that makes you question your life choices halfway through... and then keep eating anyway. We usually add a red or green curry to round it out. I've worked my way through most of the menu at this point, and the fried rice and pad see ew are solid too. It tastes authentic, so you really can't miss. The service is consistent with that of a no-frills spot. You order and pay at the counter and the food is brought to your table after. There's also a drinking water station, which is self-serve. However, if you need something specific, the staff are attentive and quick to help. The ambience is cozy and homely, so don't expect anything upscale. It was confusing after we were seated we waited for the menu . No one came by . Later we found out that you to go the counter to place your order . Poor service as well as incompetency on the staff ... was it due to snobbery as they were so busy Food was average but we can get better Thai food elsewhere . My partner and I sat in and had pad see ew, pad kra prow, and a Thai iced milk tea. Everything was divine. The pad see ew had a lot of meat, eggs, and vegetables. The flavour was so good.. I could eat three dishes of this non-stop just to keep tasting it. I have nothing bad to say about it. The pad kra pow was too spicy for me, but it was still so good. I just avoided the chili seeds. Lots of meat -- the meat to rice ratio is basically 1:1. The flavour was phenomenal here too. The Thai iced milk tea was also great. Very sweet! Which is my preference. A great way to end the very umami meal. The service was good -- it's just counter service. It wasn't a particularly hot day, but it was quite hot in the restaurant. I was able to visit Thai Basil recently and it was probably some of the best Thai food I've ever had. The staff greeted us and we were able to be seated right away. You can order at the counter and pay in advance for ease. I loved the restaurants atheistic. The wall decorations gave off a welcoming/homey feel without being too cluttered. I ordered the yellow curry, a milder spiced curry with potatoes, topped with fried onions, and cilantro. It had such a beautiful balance of heat and flavour. I was very impressed and would 100% order this dish again. It was that good. They were able to accommodate my friend's dietary needs (they are gluten-free). I'm excited to go back and eat here again. Got the chicken cashew ($9.95 lunch special) that came with a salad. Have no idea what dressing was on the salad, but it was tasty. You get a good portion of food for what you're paying. I did like the sauce on the chicken cashew, but I think it would've been better if the chicken was marinated in it as well. Tried the chicken satay as well. We will eat Thai food in excess of 25 times this year. this place, hands down, is the worst Thai food I have ever had. I ordered Pad Gra Prow which seems to have many different spellings. I do not profess to have any understanding of the Thai language but I have seen several versions of the naming of the dish which consists of your favorite protein, garlic, Thai basil, a spicy sauce, and an assortment of vegetables that may include onions, carrots, peppers, pea pods, or broccoli. I received what looked like rice a roni - the San Francisco treat. The only reason they are getting one star is because it was spicy. Otherwise, I had no idea what I was eating besides a brown rice concoction with not a vegetable in sight. We ordered the Mango with sticky rice that was next to tasteless. I threw it in the trash as it wasn't worth the calories. I ordered 2 large orders of white rice to go. When I got home, I opened the boxes of rice and was shocked at how little rice was there. Perhaps between the two Large orders combined, it might have been as much as a small order of white rice from anywhere else. Came here with friends, eating out on a rainy day. Ordered their pad Thai. CHEF KISS DELICIOUS. Their pad Thai is sooo good always craving it but too lazy hahaha. Recommend getting pad Thai if it's your first time. I've only gotten that because I'm a picky eater. Their ice Thai tea is good too, taste like chocolate milk if you ask me. I have been here a couple of times during Covid. Both times I was not disappointed. I love their curry dishes (red curry with tofu) with just the right kick of spiciness. Look for their daily specials written on the chalk board. Make sure you check out their lunch specials from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. They use authentic ingredients as I could taste the lemongrass. You can add either chicken, beef, tofu, or seafood to your selection. They now offer dining inside with a few tables. Unfortunately I have been too full to try their mango and sticky rice dessert. Excellent value, no-frills Thai food with lots of vegan options. I'd been to other locations of Thai Basil before but never reviewed any of them. Time to change that. I did a take-out order one evening by phoning in. Their menu says nothing about vegan options, but I'd seen online from other customers that they can cater to vegans. When phoning in the order, the person taking order made sure we were on the same page about what I wanted -- very clear and helpful. I ordered the laab ($7.95 plus tax), a Thai salad, with tofu, which they could make vegan by omitting the fish sauce and using soy sauce instead. I also ordered the pad see ew ($10.95 plus tax) with tofu, which they made vegan by omitting the egg. The order was ready in 20 minutes. The laab was tasty, coming with lots of shallots, fried mint, garlic, lettuce, and lots of tofu. It was quite spicy and flavourful, but it's really not a salad -- more like a spicy fried tofu kind of appetizer. 3.5/5 The pad see ew was solid as well, coming with the traditional flat rice noodles, plenty of fried tofu, gai lan, cabbage, and carrot. It was a stellar portion and solidly flavoured, though nothing mind-blowing. 3.5/5 For the price, this was definitely worth it. It's not the most complex or rich Thai food out there, but it undercuts almost every other Thai place in town, caters to vegans, and has big portions. That checks a lot of my boxes. All for about $75. Food was fast and hot. Booth comfy. Easy parking and no wait for the starving youngsters. We will go back!! The red curry with tofu is my go to - flavourful, with tender chunks of pumpkin in it.. It is truly gods gift to earth. I came here last night for take out for dinner and today again for lunch. It blew my mind last night and it's happening again. It's also VERY well priced, with the lunch specials starting at 8.95!!!! The only thing I'd say is less-than-ideal about Thai Basil is the lack of seating inside. There's probably around seven tables, give or take, and with COVID probably only three are open. Whatever. Get take out. It's worth it. It's also right next to Grandview park, so if you REALLY need to sit down, or want to go on a date or whatever, you can do it there! With your take out! Anyway. Wanted Thai food to-go so we checked out Thai basil on commercial. All the dishes were on average $11 each (so cheap!) and was a good portion. We ordered pad thai, pad see ew, tom ka gai soup, two iced thai tea, and mango sticky rice. Both noodles were flavourful and savoury. The tom ka gai was a but too salty for my liking but it would've been maybe better with rice. Thai tea and mango sticky rice were delicious too. Overall the food was a lot better than we were expecting and was so worth it! read more

I searched far & wide for the correct Thai Holy Basil dish I came to love overseas, but nobody local could get it right. Until I found Thai Basil. The name should say it all! It's the perfect blend of spicy, salty, savoury, and sweet...topped with always a perfectly fried egg. Other dishes from here are delicious & authentic too (pad Thai, fish cakes, Penang curry). We were walking down the Drive this evening when we noticed the Ramen place had been replaced with a new restaurant called Thai Basil. Apparently it's part of a chain with at least three other restaurants elsewhere in Vancouver. The decor has been brightened up a bit and interesting antique decorations added. Decided to go in for supper - ordered the Massaman curry ($8.50) and Pad Khing ($9.95). Choose from tofu, chicken, beef or pork for your protein, and for an extra $2 you can "supersize" your curry. The also have salads and noodle dishes, including ramen. Food was on our table in under 10 minutes! Decent taste (although the curry could use a little more salt) and the tofu was just the right firmness. Overall rating for this visit was 3.5, but hubby thinks 4 stars are warranted because they offer Apple Pay. read more

Thai Basil on Commercial was very clean and the customer service was great. I went in for the Pad Thai with Salad lunch special which was around $8. Very tasty, not spicy (as I requested) but I only got one prawn which was a bit of a disappointment. The salad was just some baby lettuces with a very light and not very flavourful orange dressing but I was there for an authentic Pad Thai experience which I got. No use of ketchup instead of tamarind, this was the closest to real deal Pad Thai that I have had in a while. It did not have a very strong shrimp flavour though, felt more like a vegetarian option than a seafood one which is a shame. If you have back pain like I do I recommend you wait to sit at the booths, the rest of the seating is not very comfortable, especially along the wall. Also, if you go in the summer, it is not air conditioned. Instead it is quite stifling despite the two fans that were going when I went there. A great deal for the price, just wish they had not scrimped on the prawns. Our server was very lovely and sweet. I will definitely go back and explore more of the menu. read more

Great basic Thai food for basic prices. Clean kitchen and front end, great staff, and decor. One thing is different is that the food seldom or ever comes out fully hot (temperature). I've mentioned it several times and they're happy to make it hot for you if you ask, but warm is still the default. I still can't get used to living in a country where people don't try to do the best they can at work. Update: Now the food is cold and the beer is warm. :) ok, it's not warm, but a slightly cooler than room temperature Corona just isn't half as good as a bloody cold one! The lunch specials were good, that's no debate. In the dish I ordered, the eggplant was cooked perfectly and the fried tofu was delicious. Service was friendly, fast, and efficient- not much more to ask for. The reason why I'm giving it 3 stars though is because the portions were tiny... If you factor that in it's suddenly not such a "special". All in all for $9 I got a small bowl of rice and maybe 2/3 what you would normally expect when ordering. A good find on the Drive among the usual hipsters. This Thai place is as simple as it gets without being in a food court. You sit down, get a menu, and when you are ready just go up to the cash counter to order your food, pay on the spot. Yup it's tasty, a bit more oil than I'm use to in my veggie pad thai noodles. It was unusually spicey but after pointing it out, my friend saw that it's the ginger tea I'm drinking with the pad.. No bar drinks here, no beer, no wine. I have to say the pad thai was very good but the customer service was off putting . I ordered online and arrived at the pickup time to realize they haven't started my order . When I asked if my order didn't go through the cashier kept telling me that I ordered incorrectly and asked me to pay while the cooks were making it . When paying cash I gave quite a bit and expected change so I could choose my tip amount but the cashier decided to put all of my change in the tip jar and walked away .
