overall great quality food for the price! the vibe i got was that everything was really saucy - like most dishes came with a sauce you could dip/pour over your dish, and it really elevates the flavour! The sauces were also loaded. For example, the fish cake came with sweet chili dip but they added cucumber, red onion, and peanuts in. I truly appreciated the added depth of the sauce. standout is the papaya salad (fresh, crispy and tangy!), crispy wonton (hot, crispy, and meat was tender and juicy inside, without somehow making the outer shell soggy), and pandanus chicken! I have never seen pandanus chicken at a Thai restaurant before and wanted to try it out! I could really taste that the pandan seeped into the chicken! chicken was juicy, very well marinated (sweet, salty and umami mixed!) and hot. I could eat so many of those. my least favourite was the kao soi beef. maybe i wasn't used to curry sauce with noodles and preferred rice, but even then there was a strange aftertaste in both the sauce and beef. the crispy noodles were also more chewy than crisp, so I didn't really like the texture. read more

We stumbled upon Pastara Thai during one of our walks and it quickly became a favorite--we've been regulars ever since. From the outside, it's an unassuming little spot, but don't let that fool you. The food here is absolutely incredible. The Khao Soi is a must-try--rich, flavorful, and totally authentic. It instantly transported me back to Thailand. Nothing about it feels watered down or Americanized. The gai hor bai toey chicken-pandan leaves is another standout: perfectly balanced flavors and cooked to perfection. The space is cozy and intimate, and always seems to be bustling, so I'd recommend going early. But what really makes this place shine is the service--genuinely warm, polite, and personal. This is really what makes me want to go back each time. Also, their bua loy perfectly hits the sweet spot if you have space for dessert, especially on a cold rainy pnw day! My partner and I have walked by this place several times and it smelled divine. We decided to stop in one night and we definitely did not regret it. The food was fantastic, the best Pad Thai Noodles I've had at a restaurant. The spring rolls were quite crunchy and lather than I thought. The curry tasted wonderful as well. The service was quick and the couple of times I needed something the staff were there immediately and it took me no effort to flag them down. The restaurant itself is nice and cozy. Decent Thai food with a few vegan options, but there are much better Thai places in Greater Van, even if it's Thai-challenged. I don't live near New West, but we were visiting friends out there and so decided to try this place out, as they have a small curated vegan section of the menu. It was a bit tough trying to find enough vegan dishes to split for the four of us, but they found some dishes that worked for us. We ordered: -Vegan tom kha soup -- very coconuty broth, gently sweet, lightly spicy, with tofu and mushrooms. Quite simply and lacking depth, but tasty enough. 3/5 -Vegan massaman curry with tofu -- we requested this "Thai spicy", but it was just slightly spicy. The curry was flavourful cooked with potatoes, onions, and peanuts. Not the most complex curry out there but pretty well-done. 3.5/5 -Vegan pad pak -- solid mixed veggie dish with a garlic sauce. You get broccoli, carrots and cabbage for the most part. Simple but effective. 3.5/5 -Vegan pad see ew -- the wide rice noodles were nicely cooked but they clumped together, indicating a rather amateurish cooking style. It came with tofu, carrots, broccoli, cabbage and mushrooms. Not the most exciting or competent version of this dish, but it was decent. 3/5 -Swimming rama with tofu -- they usually do this dish with chicken, but they substituted tofu for us. It's cooked with a mild, medium-sweet peanut sauce, and accompanied with broccoli. This dish is better done with spinach but this was decent. 3.5/5 All in all, good but rather unexciting Thai food--I guess that's expected for New West. I have been here many times. Once there was a piece of plastic wrap in our pad thai. The waitress took care of it and the kitchen apologized. Wee have been back but always a little worried about what we might come across. The restaurant is in a purple building that looks like a mechanic garage. The papaya salad was great and the swimming rama decent but we've had some excellent thai in burnaby (Thai Eatery) that put today's experience to shame. We have the following food items: Spring roll Papaya salad Red curry with beef Chicken cashew nut Pad Thai Jasmin rice Coconut rice They were very reasonably priced, really generous portion, and it tastes great. My residents keep on asking me for the restaurant name. Spring roll was hot and crunchy. Papaya salad is not bad, pretty average. Red curry was very smooth and fragrant, not overly spicy, and lots of beef in it. The chicken cashew nut is well seasoned, it goes so well with coconut rice. Pad Thai is decent as well, their Pad Thai is a lot better than other places I've tried that's for sure. I was told their restaurant can sit 100, and even have a room for private gathering. I am glad to have found a place for good Thai food. I was there during lunch and ordered the basil chicken rice lunch set - phad kaphrao kai dao. This dish is usually my benchmark for Thai food as it is a dish commonly found in Thailand. The version here is pretty good with though it could be spicier. It was probably my mistake as I did not indicate if I want it spicy. They did have cut chili in fish sauce so that helped. I loved the fried egg with its runny yolk, that was so good. The only negative was the rice. It was very hard and dry. I did not send it back to the kitchen as I was not sure if that was the way they served rice here. I definitely did not taste or smell the jasmine - a pity as Thailand does produce the best jasmine rice and it is what I usually eat at home. For the lunch set, it just came with a vegetarian spring roll. It was ok. I would not order it as an appetizer. I also wish they will offer a small bowl of tom yum soup as an add on to the lunch set. I also had the iced Thai milk tea. That was legit, except it was sugary sweet. Instead of using more milk (condensed or evaporated) for the sweetness, it was done with sugar. It would be perfect if they use more milk like in Thailand. I will definitely be back to try the other dishes. The place is easy to miss as it is just a building/house on its own, with no obvious sign that it is a restaurant. It has beautiful decoration inside though. Servers are all nice and friendly and the interior is like Thai-ish...golden elephant is glittering on the wall. The only complaint is... you have to pay for street parking. Came here during lunch hour and they are pretty busy. From the outside, they don't look like restaurant (at first I was thinking it was a house haha). They do have lunch special (with lunch portion), but it is enough for me. I ordered panang with chicken. It's kind of red curry, but it taste a bit on sweet side. Inside the curry there are chicken and bell pepper. They use lots of spices so you can taste the curry is pretty strong. One of the better Thai restaurants in Greater Vancouver. Actually, according to my sister's Thai friend, this is THE best Thai place in the GVRD. I'm a big fan of the green curry, and it's pretty much all I order, changing it up between beef and chicken. My boyfriend loves the duck curry. You do have to ask for Thai spicy for your curries to be actually spicy, and make sure you emphasize it to your server when you are ordering. The first time we ordered Thai spicy, I think I got not spicy instead, even my sister and mom (who aren't fans of spicy food) couldn't taste it. Parking is terrible around here, but you can console yourself with some Chatime after your meal. :) read more

My friend and I stopped by on a weekday to try their lunch specials. Restaurant had only one other table of diners. My friend ordered the red curry and I ordered the panang curry with a Thai iced tea. The food arrived fairly quickly but it was missing salad. The photos clearly show a side salad and most Thai restaurants I have dined at includes a salad with their lunch specials. I am not sure if the increased minimum wage, operating costs and lack of diners affected this. We got a fried wonton to accompany the rice and curry. Previous photos showed a small salad with their lunch specials at one time. I guess this is the new reality of increasing costs. My curry entree was mild. Our server did not offer customization of spice level. It was an okay dish with a good amount of chicken slices. My friend and I meet up at 7pm and most the restaurants I wanted to try in New West were closed and yelped gave this place an overall 4 stars and their website shows that they have two location with one in downtown so I thought it'd be a promising place to eat. The description of their special caught my attention. Sorry, forgot its name but it was fried chicken in red curry with coconut meat and bell peppers. This dish is served in a coconut with a side salad. My friend was interested in a few of the appies so I suggested we order the special appetizers which includes 2 springrolls, 2 golden bags, 2 prawn blankets, crispy tofu and calamari for $13.50. We also ordered a Tom Kah soup can be done with prawns or chicken we got it with prawns. -Thai Iced tea (3/5 - $3.00): Nothing too special. Not bad, not good. -Tom Kah Soup (3/5 - $10.50): Overall it's 3 stars because the first few spoons and we were like oh my sour, we're gonna pack this to go. -Special Appetizer (3/5 - $13.50): Good for sharing especially if you want to try more than 2 of their appies. The crispy tofu and calamari was on the unpleasant side. Bland and just not done right. -Fried chicken in red curry served in coconut (2.5/5): Got my hopes up with the word 'fried chicken' and coconut meat. Didn't find any coconut whatsoever and the chicken just tasted like normal chicken. This dish had no spice and was rather sweet. Inconspicuous Thai restaurant in New Westminster. From the outside it doesn't look like much and you might miss it, but when you step inside it's beautifully decorated and inviting. The green and red curries with tofu are my absolute favourite. They are so flavorful and filling. They come with rice unlike many other Thai places I've been to where you have to order the rice separately. The Pad Thai and Pad See Ew are others which I have ordered as they can be made vegan by requesting them with tofu (no egg or fish sauce), but they're not as impressive as the curries. I find the Pad Thai blander than others I've had, and the Pad See Ew a little too oily. I love Patsara. It's both inexpensive and delicious. My favorite dishes are the curries and the Pad See Ew, but really it's all good. One order of curry with rice is usually more than I can eat.
