Walked in and the lady working there was almost mad we came in and tried to do business with them. Just a dump in there. Lady then came over and without saying anything and just flipped the menus at us and walked away. We just walked out at that point. We wanted it to be better. We HOPED it would be better. After eating at several different places between Long Beach, Seaview, and Ocean Park, we decided to try something different and try the Loose Caboose. *sigh* Tough when you go in and there's two tables seated--and it's crowded. No one available to tell us there was seating in the back, so we sat right next to the door. The group behind us got the heads up, so they were lucky enough not to freeze during their meal. Husband got the bacon cheeseburger, and I got the salad and chowder. Cheeseburger was BIG, no doubt, but meat was bland and bun was non descript. For the first time in my life, I didn't finish a bowl of chowder--it just didn't taste right. The salad was okay, but weird lifeless red onions on the side (perhaps they were intended to be pickled). Unfortunately, the part of the chowder that "didn't taste right" came out with a vengeance a few hours later....I was sick the rest the night. The server/owner lady was really nice, and the place is sort of cute, but I simply will NEVER return, and we own a house there. I couldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

First time to this diner. Remember, this is a diner! We will come back for sure. Good food, great service we had alot of fun and worth the stop. Just a little tacky, just a little less than sparkling clean. We felt welcomed with our group of 2 adults and 5 kids, yes a little squished in but we're used to that. Pleasantly shabby, well-worn in and decidedly dressed-down, the Loose Kaboose is that kind of tiny dive that locals love and tourists pass by in favor of something more quaint and polished. But should you happen to be in the area, don't be afraid to go in and grab some lo-fi grub! We stopped in for some fish & chips on a whim, since we happened to be across the street at an antique mall, and we're glad we did. The owner/waiter/cook was a surly bear of a guy who was a tad intimidating at first (and perhaps a tad wary of us city folk dropping by in the off-season), but he ended up being friendly and quick to laugh once we settled in. The food was enormous! We ordered the Captains Basket of mixed fried seafood fare to split between two of us, and we were charmed when it came evenly divided between two fully garnished plates. He even split the crab cake in half for us. Aw! Each half was easily a full meal in itself, and it all tasted great. The miniature train circling overhead was a fun, quirky touch, and the dollar bills stuck to the ceiling along with the chatty, off-duty waitress (from another restaurant!) at the next table gave the place a bar-in-the-daytime vibe that, again, was gritty in a good way. All in all, it's not the absolute best dive I've ever been to, but it's far from the worst, so I say give it a shot and see what you think. read more

Just finished having lunch here for the second time now. We love it here! Had pizza the first time and it was delicious. This time around we got burgers and omg, they were amazing. I went for "the kicker" and it had just the right amount of spice to it. Definitely had to wash it down with water. Perfect. I stopped here around New Years after traveling back from Washington and this was one of the last places open in Long Beach that day, so I decided to give it a shot. The inside is very small, but considering it is an old train car, that shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. There was only one other group of four present when we arrived, but it still took a little time to get our drinks and order taken. This was the only real negative aspect of our time here. The slow service could have been attributed to the holiday weekend; perhaps there is more staff present during non-holiday times. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich w/fries and a cup of clam chowder. The soup was pretty good, although I am unsure if it is made fresh. It was still enjoyable nonetheless. The main course that arrived was quite large, so you definitely get a lot of food for the money, depending on what you order obviously. The fries were great and the sandwich was right on par with what I have had at other establishments. There is a train that circles around the inside of the building above your head which was a nice touch, keeping with the eating-inside-an-old-train-car theme. With that said, the actual dining area is pretty small. I imagine this might be of some concern if you enjoy more privacy while eating your meals, so that should be taken into consideration if you are with a large group. Overall, a great little place that I would visit again if I am ever in Long Beach. read more

We stopped and had lunch here! This was our first time in Kaboose. My partner had the unlimited fish n chips and son had ckn strips while I had the crab cakes! While they were really good and full of Dungeness crab they lacked aoli on top they offered tarter or cocktail sauce not the same thing. But the cod fish and chips were amazing. The reviews will tell you not to go, but if you want a real American, homey restaurant experience, this IS the place to go. It was her favorite place in the States. This place is what I would expect for a caboose/restaurant. Tacky but not too tacky. Table was clean and covered with news tidbits from the local past along with info about clam digging. No hot water at the restroom sink. I had a cup of clam chowder and the halibut fish and chips. The chowder was creamy but nondescript. It was better after adding the oyster crackers (cringe) and a few dashes of Tabasco. The halibut was dry and over cooked, but the pieces were huge! Decent breading, not flavorful but not greasy. The fries were typical mom-and-pop shop crinkle cut fries. The tiny garnish of coleslaw was horrible: a waste of their time. My wife had a salad that was served in a burger basket and looked like reassigned hamburger toppings, plus a few pieces of sliced chicken. She was not impressed. The server was nice. My wife said she was wanting a good fish dinner just as we were passing this establishment. We're so glad we stopped in! She had haddock and their clam chowder while I enjoyed their shrimp prawn dinner. It was so good that we enjoyed a later meal there. I had the best fried oyster sandwich I've ever had. The owners, Don & Tasha, are friendly down to earth folks that make your eating experience one to remember. New owners of this eclectic breakfast/lunch/dinner grill will make you feel right at home! I had the BBQ bacon swiss burger, wife had the Halibut fish & chips. Our kids had corndogs and chicken strips with a basket of fries. The fries are crisp and seasoned and I ate more than I should have. Come early as the seating is tight and I can easily see a line to get in when the fair weather months swing around. There is a $1 charge for cards, but they deliver! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served. The menu is brief but they hit all the salient high notes and the food is top notch! Portion sizes are moderate and appropriate. I could have felt comfortable after 3/4ths the burger... but I ate it all. Would definitely recommend! read more

Unbelievably bad service. Walked in, the two 'workers' didn't acknowledge us at all. Finally, the man said, 'have a seat anywhere'. the 5-6 open tables were dirty. There were 2 other sets of customers in the establishment. The woman said, "I was going to clean this table for them. " then, started to clean it. We sat down, no offer of menus, water or even 'bugger off'. After a few minutes of watching her clean other tables, we left. There's so much wrong with the place, hard to write. I would not go there. They they were confused how to split a bill between two people when we were the only ones in the place. So after getting it split. We pay I hand them cash. The 'East Coast Philly' Sandwich & clam chowder was great. We arrived at the restaurant at about 7 pm....as we were being seated, the cook was exclaiming "What, do they wait til we are closing to come in!" He was ranting and raving about customers coming in late. He yelled at the very friendly waitress, telling her to turn off the open light, and to flip the sign. This place might be charmingly divey in great weather, when a glorious blue sky drugs you into not noticing the awful smell, questionable cleanliness of this claustrophobic diner. A summertime crowd would also mask the sound of the microwave doing the lion's share of cooking your meal. But we were there on a blustery, rainy day, when the place was empty, save for the microwaving chef and a gruff waitress we felt compelled to chat up as she sat feet away watching us eat. (If you've been to Rod's Lamplighter and thought it was a dive, at least its staff is friendly, and its fish and chips were cheaper and beat the breading off the ones here.) These guys are great! New owners starting this year. I wanted to write this review because many were from before they took over. To start, the Clam Chowder is Excellent. After my first bite I asked the Owner/Server, "is this made from scratch or do you just heat it up?" He stated "home made". I asked because it was delicious and exceeded my expectations. Then that evening we ordered Pizza to be delivered and also to send another bowl of chowder. Again the Chowder was excellent. My Son is the Pizza expert and said it was OK. But the delivered. One of the other Pizza Places would not deliver and they may have been better but I will never know. My Wife had the Fish and chips. They looked like the Frozen type but they were still somewhat unique and good. I would say for a little old Train Cabosse this place is great! read more

The best breakfast in town! Amazing! Eggs Benedict with crab was great. Crab cakes amazing. Bacon and French toast amazing. Huge pancakes. The best biscuits and gravy we've ever had. And my son loves trains and there were tons of old trains and a track that goes around the restaurant. Train books and pictures. Train trivia. Very fun and unique place. Best food!
