First of all, to the person who gave this restaurant a one star review and said it's not true Mexican, thank-you! That's what got me to come try this place. Don't get me wrong, I do love true Mexican food, but I also love Tex-Mex, Arizona-Mex, and New-Mex. It annoys me when all of the Mexican restaurants in an area are basically the same thing. Now, as for what I got and what I thought, unfortunately I had already eaten by the time I learned of this restaurant's existence. I wasn't hungry but decided to stop in just to try a cheese enchilada. I've been obsessed lately with Texas-style cheese enchiladas like what I grew up with. This enchilada awakened a long-dormant memory from my childhood before my parents divorced around 1983. In my recent research into Texas enchiladas, I learned that alongside the popular Taco Tuesday there is also an Enchilada Wednesday, and it originates apparently in San Antonio, TX where the public school system has served cheese enchiladas for lunch on every Wednesday for over 50 years and counting. According to what I've read, it's hands down the most popular meal of the week, and many kids who bring sack lunches the rest of the time will buy lunch in the cafeteria on Wednesdays so they can get the enchiladas. They're that popular. Well, I briefly went to elementary school in San Antonio in the early 80s and would have had them, but I didn't remember them. But trying this enchilada here today brought back the memory of eating cheese enchiladas in San Antonio as a kid. This was San Antonio-style enchiladas and the closest I've had to them in many years. So you can keep your "true Mexican" food. I'll stick to the true Tex-Mex food like I grew up eating in Texas and, later, Arkansas. And what I had today at the Lopez Taco House was it! (It was also really nice having green sauce that wasn't just green because of tomatillos but actually had some good heat and flavor from various chilies. It also reminded me of Texas.) read more

Love it here. I usually get their cheese quesadilla - they don't overdo it with the cheese, which I like a lot. I also sometimes get a side of their white cheese dip, which is really good too. Definitely recommend it here. read more

Grew up in Albion and have been eating here since they opened in 1975. Great food and service and family run. If your near here or passing by then stop and check them out. You won't be disappointed. I get here now 2 times a year or a little more and live in Detroit and I can't find tacos and enchiladas this good. Not bashing Mexican restaurant scene here but it isn't the same. I've had Mexican food in San Diego, San Francisco, Acapulco and all over the mid-west... the there is something about their mole sauce and cheese topping along with the ground beef and refried beans that was unique and authentically perfect! I tried Lopez taco house based on the recommendations. However I was underwhelmed. I am not from Albion so I have nothing to compare it to. But if this was my only option for Mexican I'd pass. I found the beef enchiladas and beans to be bland and flavorless. Also my cheese enchilada was filled with American cheese. It felt like they laid a Kraft single on the tortilla and let it melt. If you grew up in Albion and come home you always hit 2 places, Lopez Taco House and Charlie's Pizza. I always make a trip to Lopez. To me they have the best Tacos and Cheese Enchiladas on the planet. They make their own hot sauce and it is to die for. This trip home they were going through a remodel and was take out only. So I ordered ahead and went to the park to enjoy my food and see the river with the ducks. The only complaint I always have for them is they buy their salsa instead of making it in house. The flavor is just like any other Mexican restaurant. Not much seasoning or authentic taste. There were parts of beef chunks in my beef wet burrito but it had no flavor. The restraunt has nothing special to offer for seating or ambiance as the chairs are cheap old style diner sets and a few Mexican sombreros on the wall. Im surprised that the place hasn't burned down to the ground yet as it looks like high voltage cables were removed from a neon sign and black electrical tape was used to patch in some new wall lights. Only specials here are the workers. Very fast and courteous. Price is reasonable. read more

There are two Mexican restaurants in Albion and this one is by far and away the better of the two. So now you're thinking that "hey, only two restaurants of the same type in a small town isn't really a comparison" Don't worry, this place is actually pretty good even on a regional level, and by regional I mean several states and yeah Detroit is just down the road and still beats a bunch of Detroit stuff. So let's get to the food. Everything here is homemade. And even though a lot of it is the simple, Americanized Mexican food. Because it's homemade it has really good flavor. You don't need to dump salsa on the tacos they already have a good flavor to them. And the enchiladas or gooey and not greasy at all and have a sick Rich's last of them that is bursting with flavor. I was genuinely surprised. Their prices are very reasonable , and they have a lunch special for five bucks with six or so different combos. And if you think for five bucks, you're going to go away hungry, you are not! For example I had the first time I was there to tacos and an enchilada. $5.00 (and no, these are not extra small portions.) I've been there three times now just to be sure I wasn't missing anything, and while I certainly haven't tried everything on the menu and I haven't been there for dinner it isn't the price that she would go for it quite literally is the food again it's fresh it's homemade and it has good flavor. Service is pretty much what you'd expect for a small town, they're friendly and attentive but not annoyingly so. The atmosphere is definitely midwest diner laid-back style and it gets kind of crowded around lunchtime, and while the food is tasty & good, just keep in mind it's not super fancy. It's worth the drive into town. One thing to keep in mind is this place has been around for 40 some years, so it's does kind of look like it's in an old 1960s style diner complete with counter and counter stools. (Yes they have tables also) replete with the Formica tops and all. It's at The beginning of Albion's downtown district, and while I'm sure there street parking there's probably additional parking on the side streets. This place is close to the Albian College campus so I would imagine it's a great place for the students. We were visiting and Lopez came highly recommended. We left full and happy. The food was tasty....If not surprisingly expensive given the economics of this Michigan Outpost. My biggest issue was how they served my burrito. It was served like a big taco. I custom ordered a burrito with the desired ingredients and the cook sent it out not rolled up like a burrito. When properly assembling a burrito the tortilla is closed at both ends thus enabling you to eat it without the contents spilling all over the place. So to recap....Expensive for the demographics in Albion...Tasty and delivered as ordered...But it NOT a burrito if it is not swaddled and wrapped like a BURRITO! It is a super messy Taco. The food was good, I was in town for the week and looking to try all the local dives, well this place sure is Mexican food but in my experience I consider this a "tex mex" or "Americanized Mexican" (a better Taco Bell?). I still wanted the regular platillos that one might expect. Other than that it is delicious, just don't expect a "Full Mexican experience". My wife is from Texas and I lived their for 12 years before we moved to Michigan. We have been looking for a Authentic Mexican food restaurant for years since moving up here. Well, I believe we have found the place. The food had an authentic taste to it, the portions were large and the service was great. Their enchiladas were amazing, the garne gasada was the best we have tasted for over a decade and the rest of the food was better than any other restaurant anywhere in Mid-Michigan. The place is a little run down and small. I had the beef wet burrito and I was pleasantly surprised that it was not ground beef. It was very good. I was disappointed that the salsa was not home made, it's Ortega. The hot sauce was home made and very tasty. I would eat here agian teh next time I'm in Albion. read more

I'm a local who has been eating at this family owned restaurant since it opened in the 70's! I'm not the expert, but I'd guess the food is considered Tex Mex. I come for the food, not the ambiance. The food is delicious and the service is always good. My favorites are the enchiladas, wet burritos, guacamole and refried beans. The sauce they use on the enchiladas and wet burritos is the best and I always put it on my rice. The salsa has been house made for a few years now and it's a great improvement over the former jarred sauce. If you like Mexican food, you should definitely give it a try. read more

Delicious and affordable, this is one of my favorite places to go when I'm visiting my hometown. It's a little worn down inside, but hey, it's a family owned business in a tiny nowhere town.
