I made the mistake of going here assuming it was typical Ameri-Mex. I was in the mood for hot, fried, and cheesy. But alas, it was not meant to be. The food itself tastes pretty good, but it isn't like anything I have had before. The salsa is mostly tomato. No onion or cilantro, which I really like in salsa. The chips are ok, served lukewarm and refills of them aren't offered. My burrito came covered in some kind of sauce, but I'm not sure what it was. Which leads me to the menu........ It is kind of confusing. There is a huge list of combo dinners, but no explanation of what each item is. I saw chalupa on the menu, and wasn't sure what to expect. When I got my plate, the chalupa was what I have always seen labeled a tostada. It's not bad, but it isn't great. Staff was marginally friendly, and I am a sucker for standard Mexican joint decor. Sombreros on the wall, Corona posters everywhere....you get the idea. We used a coupon on the website, and so I am giving them a star because two dinners were around $10. I don't think I'll go back, because it didn't satisfy my need for Americanized or authentic Mexican. read more

I like to think I know thing or two about Mexican cuisine. I lived in South Texas for a while, and have traveled to Mexico many times. I grew up in a South Texan family who cooked many dishes from scratch that most will dump out of a can or flavor packet. The food here is delicious and more tailored to traditional Mexican fare than any other place I've been to outside of Mexican town. The Mole Poblano is the best mole that I have had outside of Mexico period. Someone below complained about the gravies that they use on their food - I think they seriously need to reconsider that stand. They make amazing gravies instead of dumping enchilada sauce on everything - this can seem weird to anyone who has not eaten traditional Mexican cuisine, but it makes me so happy every time I eat there! Makes me miss south Texas. The place is clean and very cute. Lots of tile mosaic and colors. They play great Mexican standards for music and it is not overly loud. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Food comes out quickly and hot - chips and salsa quickly replenished. Did I mention the refried beans?? Wow. They are absolutely yum - and actually taste like the pinto beans that they started from. They must make them there - they are not overly runny and have some great texture - you will see a bean or two in there!! They use the traditional white cheese too, not just a bunch of shredded cheddar. If you are a fan of good Mexican food that isn't smothered in canned sauce and overly cheesed this is your place. I regret that I have not had the Tamales yet, but will have them soon and will update my review once I do. Also - saw a sign last weekend. They are having live Mariachi on Fathers day. We've been here at least a dozen times, and never had anything close to a bad experience. Everything we've had has been in at least the "very good" to "great" range. Tonight the rice was over-and-beyond awesome, and I always love the enchiladas here. The wait staff is really polite, friendly and attentive. They greet and seat you immediately and will not leave you wanting for chips, salsa or drink refills. The decor is worth a mention as well: they did an impressive job transforming the once-generic building with a colorful, festive Mexican restaurant ambiance. There's a bar room with a fireplace, and TVs, in case you're hoping to catch a game along with your meal. I'm disappointed that one of the (negative) reviews here is for some place in Ypsilanti that I don't think is even related to Los Amigos in Westland. read more

Under normal circumstances, I would probably rate Los Amigos with 4 stars, or 3.5 since I would really only reserve such a high rating for truly fine dining with a seasonal menu. However, the other reviews are slightly, um, shameful. In this case I really feel the need to tip the scales. They used to have a Detroit location where we were regulars, but it closed and now we're forced to make the trek to Westland. I miss the other, smaller location, but the food is just as good here. Brown gravy? Try mole -- which is head and shoulders above what mostly passes for Mexican food in these parts. Los Amigos makes Mexican food the way I think my Granny would have made Mexican food if she were Mexican. The sauces all seem to be made from scratch. The ranchero sauce on the enchilada is legit, as is the fresh tomato sauce on the burritos. They'll even substitute a soft taco for a hard taco on the combos for a little extra and the soft tortillas are also the real deal. The refried beans are also made with love - much better than the others in the area i.e. Las Palapas, Los Tres Amigos, etc. (don't even make me say Mexican Fiesta). They'll also let you substitute pork carnitas in any combo meal for the same you would pay for chicken or beef - this keeps my husband loving the place. He is completely addicted to their carnitas. The salsa is also traditional Mexican - it has tang/spice, but is not the chunky stuff you can find in a Pace Picante jar at Target... it's sad to me that anyone would see this as a drawback rather than a draw. Don't even get me started on the drink prices - the margaritas are amazingly affordable and not the overly sweet kind either with the phony sour mix that seems to be ridiculously ubiquitous. read more

I love Mexican food, but oddly enough what has me coming back here more often is that the fact that their drink prices are incredibly low when compared to other restaurants in the area ... even Ashley's right next to them. Salsa, thumbs up ... my wife does not prefer chunky salsa, and this is not. I like it all. For meals, the combinations, chimi, and fajita's are all good. Rice and beans are okay ... not the best, but not the worst. Service, is definitely much better than most of the area restaurants. What I would love to see is a Mexican restaurant that would serve their version of a Moe's/Qdoba/Baja Fresh burrito. Hint, hint, nudge nudge. I think it would be a big seller. If your trying to use your sick days at work, miss class from throwing up or stay in the bathroom all day than come eat here. My date got sick seconds after eating the food. He couldn't even make it to the car to leave the restaurant without throwing up in the parking lot. I ordered #14 combo (beef taco, tamale, enchilada). It's been 3 hours since I've eaten there and it still feels like the food is just sitting in my stomach. Like it won't digest. My date orders 3 soft taco's (2 beef and the 3rd one chicken). The enchilada had a funny taste, I took one bite and left it alone. My date had two bites of the chicken soft taco, he said the chicken tasted like can meat and the shredded cheese tasted like cottage cheese. It tasted spoiled. The service was mediocre, we had to wait a while getting our food. I did discuss the situation with the owner, he wrote his name and signature on a blank paper stating next time we come we get $15 off. Blah, next time I will just go to Taco Bell. In response to David C of Los Amigos my date ate both beef soft tacos and took two bites of the chicken soft taco. So he ate 75% of his order. So it's not a surprise that he fell ill so quickly. It's called food poisoning, and it's really not a surprise when several other people had the same reaction according to the Yelp reviews for this business. Instead of writing "I'm sorry" Yelp responses to customers your establishment gets sick you need train your food service handlers on proper cleanliness and not serve spoiled food. read more

Ordered a chicken burrito and guacamole salad. On the menu it says the guac is made fresh. So i ordered guac with no onion and no onion in my burrito. All my food had onion. When i pointed out to the waitress that the menu says the guac is made fresh she said it wasnt. Then she explained that my burrito had onion because that is premade, prepackaged meat as well. I've been sorta drug here to lunch a bunch and I initially ordered some non-lunch special entrees and was not super impressed with them. On subsequent visits I did as my buddies did and ordered off the lunch special menu and was pleasantly surprised. Combos are pretty good gringo Mex and are a pretty good deal. The lunch fajitas get 4 stars. They were fresh and not overcooked and and frankly a way bigger portion than I was expecting. Great dish of sides with beans pico and guac. First time I have not regretted ordering fajitas in a very long time. Ask for the hot salsa which has a nice smoky chipoltle hit. Way more mojo then the regular stuff. For great fajitas with sides and good chips and smokey salsa for $5.40 it was a damn good cheap lunch. read more

I like the real tomato flavor, just could use some spice. Price of 16 oz. marguerita was good- not $12 like another Place nearby and we ordered top shelf. Guacamole was good, but order 2-3 if ordering with 4 or more people. I ordered the enchilada supreme-- weirdly not served with rice or beans and was $9. So I paid $2 more for side of beans. With exception to the ground beef enchilada, the cheese, chicken and bean were good. The ground beef was horrible. One bite and no way- it was just ground beef- no sauce or flavor. I do take into consideration that michigan just doesn't serve good mexican food like cali, now with that said ... My boyfriend and I frequently eat at los amigos mexican restaurants. He gets the fajitas with the spicy salsa (which he absolutely loves). The beef fajitas are a tough but what can you do. I usually get the enchiladas bc who can mess up those? I did, however, get a chile relleno/enchilada combo and did not like the chile relleno. This batter around the chile was dry and dense/thick not light and airy (how chile rellenos are suppose to be). I also like their chips and salsa and their nachos botano. Be careful when ordering the nachos botano togo, they do get soggy and turn into somewhat of a chilequiles. This place is always a thumbs up with our group, and with a few pinky eaters it's hard to find a place where we all want to go. The food is always good, and it's never super expensive. The combos are always my go to so I can get a little of everything I like, and they are super affordable. If you go during happy hour, the margarita deals are awesome! The only reason I knocked it down one star was because depending on who you have waiting on your table, you may get a very nice helpful waitress, or someone who can not refill your glass of water, no matter how many times you ask. read more

First time there tonight. Heres the lowdown. Highly recommended. food: I had a three taco plate, your choice of meats. I chose steak, tilapia, and carnitas(pork). Steak was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The tilapia was fresh and light, and the carnitas was salty but had a rich meaty flavor. They gave you two shells in each taco and enough meat to fill three. No joke. one kid meal order has enough to feed two kids so save some money there. Service: everything was well orchestrated from host to server to meal on the table. Great service from our server magdalena. Sunday nights there is a mariachi band which kept our young kids entertained. Price: two adult meals and two kid meals, a soda, beer and milk for 39.xx. We will be back alot read more

Wtf did I just eat? This place is gross. After reading the reviews, I'm thinking this place may just be an acquired taste and too different than the Mexican food I'm used to. Menu is confusing and overwhelming. Food itself was not hot and covered in a strange gravy-esque sauce. Salsa tastes like tomato sauce straight from a jar. Blech. They also have a location in Ypsi that my sister wanted to go to for her birthday dinner. We went and were all disappointed (except for her since she loves the place.). Suspicious of the cheese on the enchilada; might that have been some sort of a velveeta product? The salsas seemed fresh; the regular was mild, fine for normal Midwesterners, and the special request hot version was exceptional ...and hot indeed. (The owner commented below, seeming to indicate that the cheese is all real, not anything like velveeta. If he explicitly confirms that they use only real cheese, I will happily upgrade my review.) The margaritas are available with fresh juice, but shame on them for even having "sweet and sour mix", much less boasting of it on the drink menu. I hear they have an awesome Monday margarita happy day price. I'll return for a fresh assessment, at the bar. A New Mexican joint is opening nearby, On the Border, an upscale chain, and the facility looks fully in step with the food moment, complete with a large selection of craft beer taps. I hope that Los Amigos steps up its game, because I'd like to see a local, independant restaurant shine. I would like to see Los Amigos' margarita menu stress fresh juice "real" margaritas, with artisan liquors, and banish "sweet and sour" and other mix shortcuts. I hope to upgrade my review! Since moving to the area from Belleville, This location of Los Amigos has been on the list of places to visit. The Ypsi location has been frequented for their margaritas, but I stopped eating their food (those who visit or read reviews will know why). Full disclosure though, this was not my first choice for Mexican but Ford Rd with a street light out is an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE to navigate. I mean seriously, why aren't street lights more reliable if it lightly rains. WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?! Okay I'm fine. Moving on. This location is very nice inside, very spacious and festively themed. Staff was very helpful and nice. So why the 3 stars? Got sick. Whole story: ordered a fajita and things went downhill from there. I'm usually the garbage man when it comes to food, but literally minutes after starting into my meal I was headed to the bathroom. As I write this 12 hours later I'm still not 100%. Kind of disappointing. Even though it had no flavor, it still tasted different. Not cooked on a cast iron different. Guess I should have taken the hint. I tend to fault places a lot more if I believe it's intentional but I let up here because it seems like a good place and maybe I just had bad luck that day. I'm usually not a weekend eat out type of guy (food deliveries are usually on weekdays, FYI) but I could try it again if the memory fades away. read more

To me its just a basic mexican restaurant food wise. I have been here a couple of times and they have updated the menu it's very extensive. The have a nice bar area and it gets pretty live for Cinco De Mayo. Their margaritas are good and they have 32oz beers. I got their enchiladas with chicken it was pretty good. When I go back I'll try their guacamole appetizer it looks fresh and their regular guacamole on the side had a good flavor. Their salsa that comes with the chips is good, tip if you get their spicy sauce mix it with their regular because the spicy salsa has no flavor just spice. The bathrooms are hit or miss sometimes not as clean as you would like but it will do. read more

This place is a go-to for our family. When my daughter was a newborn we got their takeout once a week! They package their take-out with such care, sending you with a ton of chips and salsa. The staff is great and always remember us when we visit. I always go for the chimichangas, they are amazing. Get the queso, you won't be disappointed. I took my husband out for Father's Day dinner. I understand it was pretty busy and they clearly were prepared for a crowd. The complimentary chips were stale, but the salsa was good. I ordered the chorizo cheese as an appetizer-it was like a bowl of milk with meat in it. I was disgusted to find a piece of plastic in it that was clear and about 2 inches long! The waitress said she spoke to the manager and they took it off the bill. Our Entrée came, and the tacos I asked for without lettuce actually were packed with lettuce. When I opened the taco, the next issue was the cold soggy shell. The final thing was the hair!!! Once again, the waitress said she spoke to the manager and they took my food off of the bill. In addition, they took 20% off of my husband's food and his adult beverage. At no point in time did a manager come to our table, no apology given and I left feeling hungry but so grossed out that I came home and made a bologna sandwich. I am from Arizona where you get "authentic" Mexican food when you go to a restaurant; so when I moved here, I was very disappointed. After trying so many places I found this place and I do love it! This place is my go-to Mexican food (close by). The service is great; very friendly and accommodating! They know my family when we come in and even come and sit and chat with us! Customer service is excellent! Food is always hot and comes out quickly! Absolutely terrible. To start, the restaurant did not follow COVID guidelines and was seating full capacity. We waited 30 minutes to order and an additional 50 minutes to get our food. When we got our food they forgot the silverware, and so we waited an additional 7-8 minutes to get it, and our food was already getting cold. It wasn't until i stood up and found someone else that we got silverware. And on top of that i ordered a frozen margarita and it came out melted. Perfect example of where not to go. read more

If I could give a zero start rating, I surely would. My Husband and I recently moved into the area and were looking for a good local restaurant for Mexican food. We've drove passed Los Amigos countless times before regretfully trying it one night. We pulled into an empty parking lot which gave me a red flag. We walked in and reviewed their novel-like menu that offered a lot of great options (earned 1/2 star) However, the Ala Carte menu was over priced and well as the other dishes. We are big foodies and have never paid some much for even the AUTHENTIC Mexican food. Red flag #2 We placed our take out order with who seemed like the manager. My Husband ordered 3 burritos and asked to add beans inside the burritos, it was served with rice and beans. I ordered the 1 taco 2 enchilada combo (1 beef one chicken) and that was served with rice no beans so I added beans to my order. Our takeout order was ready very promptly (earned 1/2 Star). Excited to eat, we rushed home which was about 5 minutes away. After getting home and sorting through our food I noticed the presentation of the food was gross. I handed my husband his plate at proceeded to get mine. The second thing I noticed was that my order was wrong and so was my Husbands. After eating my completely BLAND ground beef taco, I went on to my main dish, the Enchiladas. The enchilada sauce was seemed imitation and the tortillas looked like plastic. I was completely turned off and didn't even bother to eat it. I tried the refried beans and they literally tasted like they were from the can and tasted spoiled rotten and moldy. Luckily we were able to return the food for a full refund and just bought pizza instead. This was by far the WORST food I have ever tasted in my entire life and they don't deserve to be open. 1st time yesterday around 3:30pm. The salsa was good, but the food average at best. I had the enchiladas poblano... only a moderate amount of tasteless ground beef in one and some bland chicken in the other, very little spice or seasoning. The "rojo" sauce reminded me of Hormel chili from a can, tasty but not what I'm paying $10.99 for at a Mexican restaurant. I wish that I'd seen all these mixed reviews beforehand, I'd have driven down to S.W. Detroit for a better experience overall. Next time I'll go the distance for a sure thing. Hopefully the manager who reads and comments on these posts will honestly look at the hit or miss quality and other things guests point out and make changes. read more
