I love jogging this bike path. I get to witness God's masterpiece. Just me, the air, and the birds (and bicyclists and other joggers lol). It's so peaceful. I've rode my bike from Wardlow Rd all the way to the beach (downtown Long Beach). What a fun afternoon, to ride to the beach, have lunch, and then ride back home. It is a pretty clean path. A few sleeping bags and the smell of urine at some spots due to transients living under the bridge. But other than that, it's smooth sailing whether you are biking, walking/jogging. read more

In the never-ending quest to become a chiseled Grecian God, I've had to begin a more rigorous cardio routine. Apparently, using the "Extreme Conditioning" perk in Modern Warfare 3 doesn't count. Through a good friend and gym partner, I've been turned on to the South LA River Bike Path, right off the 710 and Del Amo Blvd. in the LBC. Mention the LA River to most folks, the first thing that comes to mind is an open sewer only suitable for Goodfellas taking their business rivals on one-way fishing trips. And they're probably right. But, inexplicably, the state of California has seen fit to develop little greenbelts along the river at certain locations, with this particular location being one of them. This running/riding/biking trail is a peaceful oasis only a few hundred yards away from the hustle and bustle of a busy freeway and railroad tracks. About 2.5 miles total, the oval runs along the eastern bank of the river, with a basin in its center using runoff (minus the trash and corpses) from the river, providing a habitat for birds and fish, and helping to provide a tranquil jogging experience. On any given day, you're liable to see ducks, herons, and other assorted waterfowl playing amongst the grasses and cattails. Traffic is light, with other folks out there getting their cardio on, walking their dogs, or enjoying a nice smoke overlooking the water. By the way, to the hipster looking dude I passed last week: I could smell that wasn't tobacco you were smoking bro, you weren't fooling nobody. Don't make me go DEA on you next time. All in all, if you're in the area and need a good spot for a peaceful walk or jog, check this trail out. Hours are from sunup to sundown, and the only warning I'd have is to watch out for the horseback riders that share portions of the trail. A little sketchy at some points, but A-OK! I usually take this from the Del Amo Blvd entrance and go either north or south, depending on the time of day, and how I think the wind might be later in the day. The onshore wind from Long Beach in the afternoon is often the biggest issue, so I like to use that as a tailwind. That means TM usually goes....SOUTH! This isn't the cleanest urban river path around, especially in the underpass areas. Most of the bridges will have a lovely pee smell from the homeless residents or random riffraff that hang around. Needless to say there are also weed smokers galore along this path! The water in the river is probably not the freshest stuff you'll come across either, since it is runoff from various places around LA. YUCK! I would definitely not recommend touching it or going anywhere near it!! Oh yeah, watch out for the horse poop mines that the irresponsible horse owners leave everywhere too!! Overall, the pavement is in great condition, and of course you are pretty much completely immune from being run over and killed by idiot drivers. That is probably the best reason to bike here! Now and again there are escaped latch key kids that have no clue and ride head on into you, or walk five across and block the whole path, but nothing you can't just sigh over, shake your head, and simply move on. I'd say if you go north through Compton, South Gate, etc. you might want to be a little more wary of the undesirable individuals hanging out along the path. I have never been accosted, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't happen. Weekends are probably your best bet, since there is a decent amount of bike traffic. This, of course, would make for a much safer situation. Again, just be aware of your surroundings, and if possible, ride in pairs or in a group. Don't expect to find any convenient water anywhere or any good resting places. This is more of a fend-for-yourself type of path, other than a handful of parks you may come across if you go north of Del Amo. At the north end near Imperial Highway, this merges off into the Rio Hondo path, which kicks northeast towards the Whittier Narrows dam area. I've never really gone much past that, as I use the dam as my turnaround point. To the south, you can hit the Long Beach marina near the aquarium and then jump over to the Shoreline Pedestrian Bike Path, which is a nice little beach ride. I had a ton of fun running the LARIO Trail this afternoon. It's pretty deserted, VERY industrial (note: not pretty) but super cool in a "The Heights" sort of way, or RHCP "Under the Bridge" sort of way. Definitely tagging, but I did not come across one homeless person or abandoned shopping cart, the path is well paved and pretty well kept. I grew up in this part of town which is why I may not have been worried about my safety and why I think reviewer Nando A. may have had a negative experience. I'll be going back for long run training (nice inclines). If you are close to this part of the river and need lack of obstruction when you do a long run, you should check it out. read more

I enjoy riding the southern Los Angeles River path. I enter the path at Atlantic - the entrance south of Alondra. Just as other reviews have said: the path is not very scenic: it's a big concrete canal. But you can ride the path and not have to spend so much energy being alert to your surroundings. I like to get on the path and just ride. Sometimes I think about my day or my plans or sometimes I just clear my mind and ride. When you drive on the street you have to expend energy watching cars, pedestrians and other cyclists. The path is free of signals so you can ride for miles and never stop. The homeless do encamp along the bike path at the Anaheim and 6th street exits. They have not bothered me but I choose not to use the 6th street tunnel to downtown when there are lots of homeless around. I always ride alone and figure it's better to play it safe. If I'm headed to downtown I either ride to the left turn at the RV park then take Golden Shore north into downtown or I take the Willow exit and ride south on Pacific to downtown. It's a little out of my way but I feel safe with these routes. There are certain areas parallel to this bike path where there are wetlands with benches and observation areas. They look great and provide a nice break from the concrete river. read more

I live extremely close to the LA river (or the Flood Control - what we like to call it), and I definitely think it is an amazing asset to our community! Even though this is primarily a bike path, the LA River functions as way more than just that. Along with bikers, the LA River also attracts runners, joggers, walkers, and families who are simply going out for a nice walk. Essentially, the LA River is a place for everyone, and can be adapted to your liking. Since the LA River goes for MANY miles, it works as an amazing path whether you are running 1 mile or biking 10! Once, I rode my bike down to the beach, which then connected to the bike path that goes along the beach. My favorite time to run along the LA River is in the evening, right before sunset! There are lots of families and people out from the community which is so nice, and it also feels so safe with all the people out there. I feel so lucky to live so close to the LA River. Check this place out if you need an nice and easy place to run, bike, or walk! read more

If you are training or considering training for a race, count yourself lucky to live so close to this awesome path. The LA River Pedestrian/ Bike Path stretches 29.1 miles up the east side of the river, starting in Long Beach at the Downtown Marina. Or if you're running south and pass the marina, there's a 3.1 mile stretch that continues on down the beach. I'm not above running my neighborhood streets and sidewalks, but the odds of me colliding with a car are reduced to zero by running on the LARIO (as I guess it's called). Some things to be aware of: there are many access points to the path, but not all of them are in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood. And a homeless person with their life's belongings in a shopping cart.. is also a pedestrian. I'm not saying this should deter you or make you feel unsafe; I've never had any issues. Lastly, remember we're in a three-year drought so the "river" is dry in a lot of areas. A consequence of this is that some sections contain more bird poo than they do water. And it smellllllls. This honestly bothers me more than any homeless person by a bridge. Seriously, it's rare to live in a city that has such a lengthy paved course exclusively for bikes, runners, strollers, and dog walkers. It's well-lit, scenic, and even marked with three lanes for bikes northbound/southbound and one for those of us on foot. Break up with your treadmill already ;) read more

After picking a lock key for my bicycle I asked where is the closest place to enter the bike path. Off of Wardlow bridge south of the 405 by the 710. After some searching and conversing with a few locals I found 34th St. veers off from Wardlow. It dead ends right to the 7 mile marker :-) Parked my car and hoped on the path. Rode along past some horse stales down to Golden Shore. Nice little 25 min ride. I would venture to start further north next time. read more

I rode my bike from Koreatown to 7th and Figueroa in Downtown LA, then loaded the bike onto the Metro Silver Line 910 which made it with limited stops to Union Station, and headed out to El Monte Station with just two stops. Before I knew it, I was unloading my bike and looking for an access route to the Rio Hondo Trail (also known as the LARIO Trail). The Sheriffs got mad at me for riding my bike inside the bus terminal, but didn't give me a ticket. Phew! I headed north to Valley Mall, and turned W and found an open gate to the bike path. There were a couple of sketchy guys on bikes cruising around, and at first I wondered if they had opened the gate themselves and if the trail was actually closed because I didn't see any people for the first 15 minutes. But, as I headed south, I saw other access points to the trail, and even some people. The path has a nice stretch through the Whittier Narrows and Bosque de Rio Hondo area, but it does get gritty and industrial around Telegraph and the 5 overpass. The trail was well-maintained, and there were parks along it, all the way to Imperial Highway, where the Rio Hondo and the LA River meet. I headed W on Imperial to cross the river, and then N on the LA River trail heading back towards downtown LA. This part of the trail was definitely grittier, with a lot of tagging and a couple of shady characters lurking about. But, there were also families out and other bikers and joggers, so it was a nice fast ride back to Atlantic where the trail ends. From Atlantic, I headed N through Vernon via District and some other side streets to Downey Road. I chickened out on Downey Road, and crossed the street to ride on the sidewalk across Bandini and Washington. There were just too many big rigs to ride on the road. Once past the bustle, I headed up Lorena (with a pit stop at Mariscos 4 Vientos) to 8th Street. I turned W to Boyle, then N to Whittier, and across the 6th Street bridge. Once on the W side of the river, I headed south to 7th, and rode back downtown. I'm looking forward to riding from Atlantic all the way to Long Beach, but will probably take the Blue Line to Vernon Station and ride from there to the river. read more

Started at a park in Maywood and rode south on the LA river Path crossing over on Imperial Highway to connect to the Rio Hondo path North towards Montebello. The LA river side was poorly maintained and full of graffitii tagging. There were some homeless people and shady characters hanging around so I wouldn't ride around this section again by myself. Overall, felt a little tense at times so I didn't feel too comfortable riding around here. The Rio Hondo path was much nicer and goes all the way near South El Monte. Much cleaner but was fairly deserted maybe because of the long holiday weekend. read more
