Don't make the mistake we made and passed this place by too many times! We finally got smart and had dinner here tonight and it was very good. We live in Portland and have not been able to find good Mexican food. This place was just the remedy we needed. There were 4 of us and we all thought we had the best meal. I went here a few months ago (lazy, so just getting to my review now). We were met by the owners' daughter (maybe six years old and an absolute little cutie). Automatic one-star bump up. The place is owned by the same family (brothers?) as La Mexicana in Tillamook (exact same menu in fact). The food is good. The service is great - personal and friendly. It is your typical Tex-Mex food. But the family operated aspect adds an extra star. Would go here again if I was in the area. read more

After eating out at several good but overpriced spots on our most recent visit to the coast, Los Caporales was a refreshing change of pace. It's not fancy, but the food is good and the prices are very reasonable. The service was outstanding, too. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is our margaritas tasted like they were 100% margarita mix and 0% tequila. We bought additional shots of tequila to doctor our margaritas and bring them up to par. Otherwise, no complaints at all. We'll be back for more next time we are in Pacific City. read more

We spend a couple of weeks in Pacific City each year; as a rule, we cook in most days, but save a couple of evening meals for local establishments. Pelican Pub, I'm sorry to say, has gone down in quality and up in prices over the last few years, but the positive side of that is other local eateries getting more customers. One thing to note - there are several establishments that close on Wednesdays (arguably the slowest day of the week, tourist-wise) - your best bet is usually Thursday-Sunday if you're not sure. On Wednesday, we visited the cute little resale shop on the corner of Pacific Avenue and Brooten. Midge, one of the owners, raved about Blackfish Cafe but lamented that it was closed on Wednesdays; when asked about Los Caporales, kitty-corner to the shop, she was enthusiastic about it, too. Midge a long-time local (and a really nice lady) and had nothing but praise for Los Caporales. Mr, the boy and I headed over and weren't disappointed by Midge's promises of a comfortable family-owned restaurant with generous portions. Decorating the walls of the entry are polaroid snapshots of people who visited on their birthdays (mine was two days earlier - should've visited sooner!). We were escorted to a booth in the small, somewhat cramped dining room. I was hesitant at first - running down the middle of the dining was a large table filled with people; it's been my experience that large tables of diners = NOISE, but this group defied that experience. They were quiet, polite and very well-mannered; despite being only a foot away, we barely noticed when they left. The staff are attentive and available; our water was refilled constantly, and the server was prompt in taking and delivering our orders. Mr had the super burrito, I had the verde tostada (extra spicy) and the boy had a burger (of course). I'm not a burger fan, but if I was, I wouldn't recommend it - the patty was dry and almost charred. The Mex, however, was delicious. My tostada was topped with a generous amount of lettuce (yay!) but not really enough tomatoes (boo) or cheese (double-boo). The incredible verde made up for the skimp, though. We also had their cranberry margaritas, which we both enjoyed. The server was very specific when we ordered - crushed or on the rocks? Rimmed with salt or sugar? This was a pleasant change, as I like salt rimmed on the rocks and many restaurants just add their own rim (usually sugar, which I wipe off) without asking our preference. The chips were OK - a little heavy on the corn - and I didn't care for the salsa, which had a distinctly onion-y taste to it and was watery. Mr ate his entire plate, and some of mine and pronounced it delicious. The boy ate his burger and most of his fries - again, I wouldn't recommend the American food options, as the fries were Ore Ida frozen crinkle cut types, obviously reheated and devoid of flavor. But hey, that's what you get when you order burgers at a Mexican place! We'll definitely be back - the generous portions meant a generous lunch the next day that was still awesome reheated! read more

I can keep this one short. The PNW doesn't offer a lot of good Mexican food, so put that aside. Every year we come to Los Caporales, we have great service, great portions, and delicious food. We keep coming back because that's consistent and we know what to expect. Prices are great and we always leave full. Pretty much what I crave as a Texan -- greasy, salty, meaty Mexican food. We stayed nearby for ten days, and this was my favorite place to eat. I love the atmosphere too. We came in February and the place was packed with locals. The sopaipillas are not actually sopaipillas, though, so skip that. We ended up here by accident but would return again for sure. Service was spectacular. Two kinds of salsa with pre meal chips. The sauce on the shrimp ranchero was unusual and so good. The four and five star reviews here are not surprising, given the high number of vacation home owning white folk who "summer" here. Despite the fact that I'm Caucasian and always down for a cheesy and sour cream laden "Mexican" meal, this place fell flat. First, the salsa that others rave about was served with a spoon. It had the consistency and flavor of water, and had about 7 small pieces of onion. In all my years of life I have never seen salsa served with a spoon! Dipping was impossible--instead you have to allow the chip to absorb the red water. Oh, yum. Second, the entire meal was flavorless. The red enchilada sauce, while edible, had less flavor than an .88 Banquet frozen enchilada dinner. Ask me how I know. Third, I did NOT get heartburn from the meal. While you may be saying, "That's great!", let me tell you that is very, very bad. One sign of a good Mexican meal is the heartburn that always follows. That's what spices do to an White Anglo-Saxon gut. That's what it's SUPPOSED to do. That's how you know you've authentic non-American food. Lastly, let's talk about prices: This restaurant has definitely tapped into the tourist market. $12.50 for a three-item meal (with rice and beans) that my 11 year old son was able to finish. Others have described the meals as "HUGE", but when an 80 pound 11 year old cleans the plate, the meal cannot possibly be described as huge. And $2 for more chips and red water? I didn't dare ask for a side of sour cream, for fear I'd be charged an exorbitant fee. In the end, if you're DESPERATE to pay too much for flavorless food and you happen to be in PC, you'll be happy here. read more

The pork was a bit on the dry side, but it was still good. I would consider this a typical mexican food place with rice and beans. The service was great and they were so kind to all the locals. We were at the Oregon Coast and decided to spend the night at Pacific City. Once we checked in I asked the girl behind the counter what eating places she recommended. The first place she mentioned was Los Caporales. She raved about the food. We walked about a mile and a half to Los Caporales and I ordered tacos and my wife ordered a tostada. My wife really enjoyed the tostada, but I felt that the ground beef in my taco lacked flavor. But I enjoyed the meal and beer. We will definitely eat here again when we're in Pacific City. read more

4.5 really! This is good Mexican food, for Pacific City this place rocks. This is Americanized Mexican food. Think Mazatlán or Juan Colorado (except this place is good). Portions were fine. Not too big not too small. Nothing came out greasy not even our quesadilla. Family ordered a Super Burrito, Fajitas, Caritas plate BBQ pork plate and of course the chicken quesadilla for the kids. Everyone was happy. Meat was not fatty; chicken had a delicious hit of lime and salsa was authentic. It is NOT a Pico de Gallo it is a runny chunky salsa. When in Pacific City, OR during the off-season there aren't much food options, so we headed down the street from our B&B an got some grub at Los Caporales. Everyone seemed nice at the restaurant, which wasn't particularly crowded on a Monday night, and service was fast and courteous...like it should be (ah hem, pelican pub and brewery!). The carafe of margarita was strong and decently priced, which was a plus. As for the food...it is what you get. And I wouldn't expect good Mexican food in pacific city. What I would expect is decent Mexican-American food and that is what you get...maybe a little too greasy, maybe a little too much but not so heavy that you feel like you can't walk after eating...that's what the margarita did to us, I would go back...nice family, decent food, decent margaritas. read more

It was fun to be greeted by I believe the owner who reminded me of Diego Maradona. Service was quick and the owner even made us a couple margaritas himself! Yummy. I usually order a carne asada burrito and ask for fresh jalapenos. They diced up at least two of them and sprinkled it all over the top. The meal was great. My wife's chile relleno was placed in an anahiem pepper so that was odd. The interior of the restaurant felt like we were inside of an old house that had been converted. The Women's bathroom door was in the dining area right next to a booth and a table. OH and do not forget to take some salsa to go as they only charge $5 for a solo cup worth. So good. We were slightly lost and stopped our motor home in front of this restaurant and asked for directions to our RV resort. The gentlemen were very helpful, got us going in the right direction and we said we would be back before we left the area. So glad we went back! Again, friendly staff and fun surroundings. We are from Arizona and enjoy good Mexican food. This was delicious! I had the chile relleno (my standard fare) and it was very good, with sufficient rice and beans of the side. My husband ordered the crab enchiladas--they were to die for!! Very generous amounts of crab, well presented. If we ever make it back to this area in our travels, we would come back here that the crab enchiladas are definitely what I would order! read more

What can I say about this restaurants? We came here as a backup, but it should have been our first choice. It was late and with 2 hungry kids we decided to eat here. Let me tell you this was the best Mexican food we have eaten in Oregon. We have good Mexican restaurants in Portland but nothing compare to this place. The service was beyond what we were expecting.
