Worth the Wait -- I'd Move to Reno for This Place At first glance, Los Chilaquiles looks like a pretty standard strip-mall eatery. Then you notice that at 1:00 on a Sunday afternoon there are still people waiting to get in. That should tell you something. It certainly should have told us something. My dining partner and I had never had chilaquiles before, and I didn't even know what cochinita was. Instead of making us feel like clueless outsiders, the staff took the time to explain the dishes, ingredients and different options in a way that made ordering part of the experience. I went with the Chilaquiles Colorado with cochinita, and I'm not sure there was a single "star" of the meal because everything deserved the title. The chips were pleasantly softened without becoming mush, and the chile Colorado was spicier than I expected but completely manageable. More importantly, it wasn't just hot--the flavor was complex, rich and downright addictive. The cochinita was fantastic. Then there was the Café de Olla. It arrived in a little metal pot with a cup on the side, accompanied by turbinado sugar and cinnamon sticks for stirring. Even the complimentary sweet bread with black beans that came out beforehand was delicious, and the side of black beans with my meal was good enough to deserve its own mention. The portions were exactly right, and the quality of the food far exceeded what I expected for the price. But what really pushed this place over the top was the people. Everyone was extraordinarily friendly, attentive and--most noticeably--proud of what they were serving. Our server checked on us. The food runners checked on us. The host/manager checked on us. Someone even came out from the kitchen specifically to ask how we liked everything. It never felt intrusive; it felt like people who genuinely wanted to know whether we were enjoying the food they had made. My dining partner and I also appeared to be the only non-Hispanic people eating there, which, combined with how busy the place was well after the normal brunch rush, told me we'd probably stumbled onto something special. It reminded me of the little family-run ethnic restaurants I grew up eating at in the Washington, D.C. suburbs before so many of those neighborhoods became gentrified--the kinds of places where the food didn't need to be dressed up or marketed as "authentic." It just was. Would I come back? I'm currently considering moving to Reno just so I can eat here once a week. If you go to Los Chilaquiles, enjoy the process. You're probably going to have to wait. Don't let that discourage you. Wait your turn, ask questions if you don't know what something is, order something you've never tried before and enjoy it. You'll be extremely happy you did. read more

We've wanted to come here for like forever and today was the day. Los Chilaquiles is a breakfast/brunch kind of place. We went for Sunday Brunch. If you do the same, pack your patience. This place was packed. Bigger than it looks from the outside, it was packed. I ordered the Choriquilles (Chorizo Chilaquiles). Wow. This plate had everything, however, if I'm being honest, the chorizo wasn't my favorite. It had decent flavor but a bit on the oily side for my taste. The chips were crunchy. The mixture of flavors from the beans, salsa, Chorizo and cheese was amazing. The dish was served with potatoes and eggs. I would do the Chilaquiles again, just not order the Chorizo. My friend had the Poblano Chilaquiles. This dish look equally amazing and he reported the flavor was rich, deep and satisfying. Another friend had the Enchilada Suizas. Beautifully executed. The tortillas added the right amount of flavor to the dish and the sauce added just a touch of tartness. My wife ordered the Breakfast Burrito. She ordered her burrito with Bacon. The burrito was served with potatoes as a side dish. No worries, a quick disassembly and viola, potatoes now in the burrito. Came here for breakfast with my wife and her parents, and the place immediately blew us away. The layout and design are super cool, with awesome attention to detail everywhere--from the wooden menus down to the decorations like the hanging umbrellas, the tree in the middle of the room, and the luchador artwork and skeleton statues. ​Our server, David, was fantastic and pointed us in the right direction with a bunch of great suggestions. We decided to go all out and got BOTH the mimosa flight and the margarita flight. They were packed with flavor, and the presentation was super impressive--the drinks even came with little candy touches on top. I ended up getting the birria tacos, and they were delicious. You get four tacos on the plate topped with pickled onions, and the whole meal was incredibly filling and satisfying. Found street parking right nearby without much trouble, too. Such a delicious and adorable brunch place! The decor in here is so nice and I loved all the attention to detail (like types of plates and cups they used). They provide two types of salsa and a slice of bread topped with beans. Both salsas were super flavorful and the beans were so good! My friend got an horchata and I had a sip of it - some of the best horchata I've ever had! I ordered the divorciados and it was the best of all worlds having red and green salsa and topped with well seasoned chorizo! I went here for breakfast on a Wednesday morning for the first time. It was pretty busy which is always a good sign. There were 6 of us and we were by busy talking so the server gave us some extra time to look at the menu. I had the breakfast burrito. It came w potatoes. It was quite big and filled w eggs, black beans and bacon. It was tasty. The restaurant is clean and the staff is very nice. My only gripe is that the prices are extremely expensive. We could tell from the moment we pulled up the restaurant was bustling and rightly so, it was about 1130, prime brunch time. The wait time was about 15 minutes even with it being busy. The inside has such great colorful decorations, I couldn't stop looking around. We sat down and ordered our drinks, this is the first place that has asked me if I want ice in my water, kind of a weird quirk, but not a big fan of ice in the water so I was already impressed haha They have a big drink menu, will have to try one when we come for a dinner. Before we even placed our food order, they came and dropped off an on the house sample to the table. Not sure what it was but it was tasty. My husband's coffee order came in a such a cool set up, had to get a picture. I ordered the good morning burrito with asada and it was giant! My husband had the ranchera chilaquiles with eggs, also a good size. They do charge for added protein, but its states in the menu. They have two different salsa options that they drop off, both were flavorful. The food was really good but I couldn't get over how quickly the entire staff was hustling while still keeping the place looking clean! There was a good energy in the place and great music in the background. They also give a free concha at the end of the meal. I see that a lot of people reviewed that the prices were high, but I'll pay it for the tasty food and the good ambiance. Once you are seated, they give you a bread with beans and cheese on top and my wife really liked it. Also two bowls of red/green salsa, but did not come with chips. I assumed it was to go with whatever order you choose. I ordered the Machaca and my wife ordered a chorizo scramble. The food came with a side of black beans with Serrano peppers, so there's a kick! Our dishes were delicious. I usually don't eat potatoes and these were cooked and seasoned great! Even the potatoes came with Serrano peppers on top, so remember to ask for it without if you can't handle spicy. The service was very slow, it took almost 20 min to get an order in and the carrot juice did come out right after our entrees were served, BUT LET ME TELL YOU, our waitress was wonderful! She was the only one on the floor and she was literally running around to keep the customers happy and did it very well. She made sure to communicate honestly about how long the carrot juice was going to take and every time she said she'd be right back, she would. We went to Los Chilaquiles Mexican Breakfast for brunch and the food and service was excellent. The carne asada in my Tex Mex Chilaquiles was probably the best that I have ever experienced as it was so tender and delicious. The horchata was freshly prepared and flavored just right. The service was prompt, efficient, and everyone was very attentive. I am just annoyed with one thing, and that is they ask you if you want eggs with your chilaquiles and then they charge you for them. This is like going to a hamburger place and being charged a surcharge for your meat patty. I would probably have given them 5 stars if it wasn't for this little thing. read more

From the moment you walk in this place has such a fun vibe. Beautiful bright colors and fun decor, feels very welcoming. We were immediately greatly by our friendly waitress. She started out our breakfast with a molletes on the house, super tasty. We ended up having the Los Pablanos and the Los Borrachos Chilaquiles. I recently enjoyed another wonderful breakfast at this warm & inviting place. I was the first one in on a quiet midweek morning, so that was a nice change from the usually packed house on weekends. I've been here a couple of times for lunch since a friend hipped me up to it and following those visits, I've also attended a Yelp Elite Event here that showcased a lot of their food that I hadn't tried yet. Everything I've had has been delicious! Lots of choices...the first time in, I HAD to try their namesake...Chilaquiles. Including what was served to us at the Yelp Elite Event, I've now tried a wide variety of their different offerings of this classic dish...every one of them had great flavors and textures. There's add-ons that enhance these dishes (with an upcharge for those add-ons). I see all the reviews that discuss these add-ons and I agree...it makes the price even higher, putting it into the slightly expensive range for what you get...the cost seems higher than the value, but, it's still great food. A nice touch that they do that bears mentioning...before your entrée comes out, they bring you a complimentary hors d'oeuvre of a soft bolillo (bread) roll with beans, pico de gallo and queso cheese. Another thing worth mentioning, along with my Chilaquiles entrée, I received a clay pot/bowl of black beans with pickled red onions and queso cheese...outstanding! The salsas that they bring to the table are very flavorful, too. My standout dish from my 2nd visit? Torta Ahogado ($15.99) [A popular dish of Guadalajara City. Made with a roll called "salted birote". Served with refried beans and carnitas, Drowned in a very spicy hot sauce. Topped with pickled onions] WELL worth the price! This is one of those dishes that not every Mexican food joint makes and happens to be one of my favorites from my growing up in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area. When I see it on a menu, I always order it eventually...it's SO unique and flavorful...kind of a Mexican version of the classic Italian Beef sandwich that I love...their iteration lived up to my expectations...although, the "very spicy hot sauce" was really not that spicy at all...I added some of their spicy salsa that they bring to the table to give it a little more kick...I do love my spice. Their dessert (dulces) called Submarinos is very tasty, too... [Fluffy pastries with a cream cheese filling, covered in irresistible cinnamon and sugar] I'll be returning...I want to try their Menudo that they only serve on Saturday and Sunday...I'm a sucker for that dish... I had the Los Revolvidillos ( Scrambled eggs, home style potatoes, black beans, diced ham, and 3 crisped flour tortillas).They have both red and green salsa on the side. My wife wasn't too hungrey got the kids meal Scrambled eggs with potatoes. Everything tatesd great. Our waitris was friendly and informative but was moving pretty slow. My favorite was the poblano and my husband's was the fundido - we wanted to lick the plate with the yummy, creamy cheese that was on it. Best traditional Mexican breakfast in Reno! Staff goes above and beyond to bring an amazing vibe and atmosphere where when walking through the door it felt like I was transported to Mexico! Every single attention to detail from the plates being decorative and music playing really set the scene. The food was very high quality with you being able to taste that these dishes are handmade with great ingredients. I really enjoyed some of the starters they have to offer with my favorite being the sopecitos. As for the chillaquiles they offer them in a number of flavors based on your preference. I really enjoyed the fundidos and the poblanos. Both had incredible flavor that had me wanting more after I finished. When this place first opened I got takeout and it was pretty good from what I remember. I sat inside for the first time the other day and the waiter seemed coked out. Also, there were only two other boots taken up and we were the third people to come in. Shortly after that it filled up pretty quickly. It was weird that about 6 other parties that came in after us got to get their order taken first and got their food first.. I think for the food we got and two sodas it should not have been over $60. We also weren't allowed or offered free refills. And we had to sit and wait so long for our food and ration our drink, haha. My partner said his food was cold. I think having more condiment options on the table could be a good idea and more appetizers. They give you two salsas but no chips and you have to share one little piece of bread with your partner and that is what the salsa is for.. I don't see myself coming back here. read more

I love chilaquiles. I can't believe I just found this place. They have so many different options. I am a mole lover. It's one of those things you either like it or you don't. I was excited that they had mole chilaquiles and a mole burrito. I went with the chilaquiles this time. My friend got the "la bandera" combo so she can try the red and green sauce. Chilaquiles are one of the most important foods in my life. I love them. I like good ones, I like bad ones, I like mediocre ones because chilaquiles are a perfect food. These are solidly mediocre. I had the bandera and neither sauce had enough pizzazz to really be distinguishable but were perfectly fine. I added egg because they hardly feel like chilaquiles without any protein. Services is prompt! We had a 20 min wait for a table and grabbed a mimosa next door. Which was great because that mimosa had champagne, doubt the one at Los Chilaquiles does. I was invited by a friend for my birthday. The place was packed with a 25 minute wait. The layout of the place is kind of odd with kitchen in middle of the place. We were sat down, and it took about 10 minutes for them to take our drink order and food order about another 10. We were brought an appetizer which was really yummy. Once food came out the presentation was awesome and so was the food. My only compliant is that overall service was not so well. So it took 8 minutes to stand there and wait to be put on the waiting list. 45 minutes later, we got a table. We waited another 10 minutes to be waited on. Food came out relatively quick. Food was delivered and had to wait for my tortillas. We ordered 2 beers and wanted a 3rd one, but waitress forgot. The food was actually very tasty, but I don't have 2 hrs to get food. I'm honestly shocked at how much this place has changed. It used to be one of my favorite breakfast spots. Not only have the prices gone up significantly, but now eggs are treated as an additional protein with an extra charge. While I understand that it may be listed on the menu, the server asked how I wanted my eggs cooked and never mentioned there would be an added cost. By the time the bill arrived, a simple breakfast had turned into nearly a $30 plate consisting of tortillas, a small serving of potatoes, beans, and eggs as additional cost. After the health inspection issues that previously shut this place down, I hoped things would improve. Instead, the prices have skyrocketed while the value has gone in the opposite direction. It is not as busy either following the shutdown. Not worth it!! read more
