So Good! When I think of Tex-mex restaurant food I have an idea in my head of what it should look and taste like. Growing up in south Texas I've tasted a lot of different Mexican cuisine. The food here is what I always imagined good Mexican food should taste like. Service was great! We were seated immediately and the food didn't take long at all after we ordered. A plus was the beer on draft was icy cold! My wife and son were also very happy with the quality of the food here. Fajitas were so tender and flavorful. Came in on Sunday to order a simple taco, had to wait a fricking hour to even get sat, once I was in, waited 20 minutes to even get a drink of FLAT SODA, my waitress was less than hospitle, even agressive, couldn't even access their "free" WiFi after I had to ask for a password to use it, as apparently it want up in the main room, only their bar section, once I got my taco it wasn't what I ordered, and the one guguy they had serving the food who looked like he was about to collapse cause he was the ONLY one serving food, even though they had 3 waitresses sitting at the front just gossiping with one another was nice enough to fix it for me in a flash, when I got the CORRECT version of what I ordered, the meat tasted gamey, old, and barely passable for what they would serve in a prison! Needless to say,next time I'm in rockport, I'm NOT COMING HERE!!!!! read more

We ate here because of the number of cars in the parking lot and the "seafood" and "steak" advertisements on their building. They had ONE steak on their menu, which came with 2 chili cheese enchiladas, beans, rice, and pico de gallo for $15. I don't think shrimp enchiladas or anything else they serve qualifies as seafood. The steak was good -- it seemed like it was cooked in a LOT of butter. The entire plate was over caramelized, grilled onions, which would have been nice to know beforehand. The "chili" enchiladas were a disgusting cheesy mush with no discernible tortilla or chili. Beans were good and rice was average. Service was tolerable but when I asked for my drink the second time there was no apology or acknowledgement that I'd ordered it once already. The beer prices were very reasonable - $3 draft Sam Adams. Mango cheesecake dessert special was excellent. But when half your meal is inedible it makes for a "Meh" experience. read more

I was a good kid in high school. I never drank or did drugs. I got into a good university on a full ride, where I met the love of my life and continued to make good decisions. But getting the Steak and Enchiladas at Los Comales was the best decision I have ever made in my life. (To other reviewers: I actually consider myself an overly critical food snob. Most of the places in Rockport have left me saying, for one reason or another, "Well... that was odd." Most of them have underwhelmed me. But Los Comales hit a home run with me. It is also worth noting that I grew up in Houston, which, while not The Valley, can be home to some excellent Tex Mex.) The ribeye was perfectly done medium rare. I absolutely loved the seasonings on it, and the fact that it was served on a bed of caramelized onions only made it better for me. The cheese enchiladas were also top notch. Maybe I just got them on a really "on" night, but it was nothing less than amazing. Great margaritas! Cheesecake and flan were also great. Ask for Yessica if you want excellent service. read more

The best "coastal Tex-Mex" in town. That being said, Rockport really doesn't have any decently above-average Tex-Mex places. Don't know why. Los Comales is my preferred choice - but I'm not overly thrilled by anything other than the chips & salsa & beer selection. Good Happy Hour. First off, let me address something said by a previous reviewer: "I realize we are used to good Mexican food here in Austin.." Christ, child, I feel sorry for you. Clearly you have had the misfortune of being raised on Austin-only mexican food, which can, admittedly, be quite good but in general pales in comparison to real south Texas mexican food. Based on this statement alone, I do not trust your taste buds. I hate to pick on you but that needed to be brought to attention. Moving on... I haven't been here in a couple years after moving away from the Corpus Christi area but I remember this place serving up some of the absolute *best* fajitas I've ever had. I believe they're called 'fajitas chonitas' if memory serves. My god, they are delicious! Green peppers, onions, bacon, cheese, meat and who knows what else! Yumm. Also, they have a really great green salsa. Everything at this place taste just like the food at La Playa in Corpus (which is also delicious!!) and the menus looks very similar so I'm thinking these places are owned by the same people. So, if you're in the Corpus area and don't want to drive out to Rockport for this treat, go to La Playa. read more

We have driven by this place many times on our trips to Rockport and decided to give it a try. The food was good however the menu was too busy and the portions were way to large! Parking was bad. The atmosphere inside was terrible, loud and out of control!!! If I wanted to go to a bar or club, I would have gone to one. Probably should have!!! People screaming and hollering!! A man and woman at the table next to us playing around with a TAMPON!! Instead of the waitress saying something to them, she just laughed along with them!! Way too many people and not enough wait staff!! Needless to say, WE WILL NEVER GO BACK AND DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO ANY ONE!!!! read more

Several years ago my wife and I visited Rockport and were able to enjoy Los Comales. We went back on this trip and were not disappointed. Five of us ate and really enjoyed out meals. Our food was served hot and tasted fresh. I especially enjoyed the beef. I do not recall what each of us ordered. It was all different and we tasted one another's food. I would have enjoyed anyone's order. We arrived at ~6:30 PM and had to wait approximately 10-15 minutes for a table for 5, although we were told a half hour. The service was excellent. The waitresses constantly filled our drinks and chips and salsa. I think dinner for all five of us ran in the $65 range. read more

Our family was visiting from Houston last night for a family reunion and stopped by this place for dinner. There was a wait so we asked if we're able to sit outside on picnic table and we're told to ask bartender side. I'm Hispanic and have never experienced racism on this level. I am also 6 months pregnant and as a customer walked in she told me to "watch out" not "excuse me" I was taken back because I assumed that everyone had southern hospitality clearly I cannot expect the same manners as my two year old already has. The real moment was when a bartender a white female who had a tattoo sleeve came outside only to scream across the patio at our family which included 3 Childern "hell no I won't service over there!" That's verbatim! Again I was shocked at her language and was hoping this was a joke. It was not. My Childern became aware of what was clearly going on and after witnessing my 9 year old asked are they being racist? The waitress also told us money talks, if we wanted to be served. The irony is I was in the company of a lawyer, HPD employee and myself work at a reputable law firm who would of been more then happy to tip more then fairly. I found it insulting that she served another family who was white and sitting a table down from us which included the lady who told me to "watch out" Laughing and mocking her proud ignorant behavior. It's taken me a night to process but I think this story speaks for itself and the type of establishment this place is. We joked about a Mexican restaurant who turns away Hispanics but clearly the joke is on the place. If negative zero was an option that's what I would rate it. read more

One thing there's plenty of in south Texas is Mexican food. And while there are a lot of really good Mexican food places, they're all pretty similar. Los Comales is different though. It's definitely more of the coastal type Mexican food. Lots of interesting seafood choices and other different (less Tex-Mex) Mexican food. My favorites are the El Yucateco and the Enchiladas Tarascas. The El Yucateco is basically a little bowl made of fried eggplant filled with mixed seafood with some beans on the side if I remember right. And the Enchiladas Tarascas are chicken enchiladas topped with a cream sauce with onions, peppers and mushrooms. The prices are pretty solid there too. The Enchiladas are $7 or so and even the seafood is reasonable. Oh yeah... they also make a mean margarita. read more

Salsa, fresh and awesome. The green cream sauce just as great. 2 bowls of chips by myself! The El burrito with gravy on top was not greasy and had alot of flavor. I had to double check this to make sure we were at the same place as the other reviewers, but yes... we were... I realize we are used to good Mexican food here in Austin, but bad really doesn't even begin to explain how horrible this place in Rockport really was... there were 8 of us and not one of us liked this place. Many times my family will pick restaurants based on how many cars are out front. A lot of cars out front usually mean the food is really good (or at least acceptable and really cheap). In the case of Los Comales, this rule failed us horribly. We had an hour wait (with horribly mixed cocktails) to prepare ourselves for our fate. Food at this restaurant comes in two forms: bland and spiceless or covered in sauce to the point it is unrecognizable. In at least one case (their carne asada) it comes bland, spiceless, AND covered in sauce. You can order a cocktail from the bar, but unless it is a standard margarita, you are rolling the dice on what you are going to get. Even the children's food (which even in the best restaurants is pretty basic) was either 1.)lacking in flavor (their chicken strips) or 2.)had so little on the plate the child was left hungry (the quesadillas). It was also so loud that you couldn't hear anything, just a horrible experience. "Steak...Seafood...Mexican" is the Los Comales motto. Perhaps they should pick one and stay with it? read more

My favorite Mexican food in Rockport is Jaliscos. It's goooood and so reasonable. Today I decided to try Los Comales. I wanted to eat a full seafood meal, but would have fell asleep driving away from Rockport if I did. So I had beer, coffee (yeah odd mix), queso + shrimp enchiladas. Queso was super runny. Watery runny. Oh well, I was here for the main dish. Shrimp enchiladas were GOOD. Rice and beans were alright. Enchiladas were good. Service was so-so, but I expected that. I would try this place again for dinner seafood dishes again. read more

Came to Rockport to stay while we went to the Port Aransas sandcastle festival. Los Comales was recommended to us by the Holiday Inn Express, which by the way is a great place to stay in Rockport. Anyways, we went to Los Comales and ordered a children's cheese quesadilla and chicken enchilladas. When our food finally arrived the chicken in the enchilladas was so raw it nearly sprouted wings and flew off the plate. Gag. If you want to experiment with food poisoning or you're just into chicken ceviche then this restaurant may be for you. Otherwise, stay clear. Oh, and the service. This is the one restaurant in Rockport you want to be good. A basic Texas requirement, good Tex/Mex, good margaritas, and a good selection of Mexican beer and tequila in an inviting atmosphere. Unfortunately Los Comales is consistently inconsistent on all counts. The food can be good one visit and inedible the next. Same for the margaritas. Service also excellent to non existent. Plus they have cleanliness issues. Worth a try but a gamble every time. read more

Save your money! We just moved in and wanted to try this place and it will be the last time! Our waitress hardly came to check on us and we asked for margarita's that tasted like they forgot to add in alcohol and asked for a shot to make it taste better( which it did) but after getting our bill they basics cost us $15 each adding our shot. The salad w the enchiladas was not fresh. The rice was missing flavor as well. They are doing a great job robbing their customers for the quality of their food. We enjoyed our meal at Los Comales - but only because we were with good company. The food, as others have mentioned, was bland. The salsa for the chips was some of the worst and least spicy I've had anywhere in Texas, Colorado, or any of the other western states. Service was barely tolerable. The place was dirty and smelled of smoke. Didn't get what I ordered just didn't realize until my older son brought it to my attention, after we left. It was busy and loud in there so perhaps the waitress didn't hear, she had to take her mask off several times to be heard.
