Not sure what took us this long to try this place. Mexican might be my husband's favorite restaurant meal and we've tried countless restaurants in town and some were okay, but none were an enthusiastic "let's come back" kind of place. This might be it. They bring chips along with 2 types of red salsas, one has a fire roasted taste and both are moderately spicy. Classic Margarita is a reasonable $7 ($5 during happy hour). I got the 2 shrimp taco plate and husband got a Carne Asada Chimichanga. The rice and beans on my platter were plentiful enough to share with left over. The tacos were brimming with flavorful sauteed shrimp with garlic, peppers, and onions. There was probably 8-10 medium shrimp in each one, a lot of restaurants I've been to only include 2-4 shrimp so this was a bountiful surprise. I shared with my husband and he was really delighted when I let him have a whole taco, scooping extra shrimp onto his plate. He really enjoyed his chimichanga, he did spit out one gristly bite of beef but said the food was 2 thumbs up. The salsa verde is one of the best I've had, but they charge $1.75 for a small ramekin. If i'm being honest, he has to be one of the best waiters I've ever had. My only real complain is the tortilla chips were bland and hard- a little salt goes a very long way. This place is so good. The drinks are weak... that's a change here. It must be a new bartender. Food and service is exceptional. We sat in the patio in the sunshine! With reservations called in ahead for our party of 4, we were seated in a nice big booth far away from any other tables. The anticipation was higher than the results! Pros: I ordered he Carnitas plate and the carnitas was good and tasty but that's the extent of it. Cons: Hands down the worst salsa I've ever had in a Mexican Restaurant it was more of a taco sauce but still not good, they would be better off buying salsa from the grocery store. Next I ordered a Top Shelf Margarita and much like the salsa one of the worst, I can't say the worst I've ever had but definitely in the top 3! And I question if it was a Top Shelf Margarita!! Their prices are on the high side of casual dinning especially for a Mexican restaurant. My final thoughts... If you're looking for good Mexican food I'd look for someplace different, needless to say I will not be a returning customer. It would be an easy fix to elevate this restaurant to a decent place! I've been in the food service industry for several years. I've been a waiter, manager, sous chef. I've trained wait staff. My waiter was good. Personable and attentive. The food was sub par. The carnitas burrito was packed with meat (good) but lacked any flavor what so ever. The rice could have used some sauted onions mixed in. The refried beans tasted like they came out of a can. The big problem was the manager. A small, irritable individual with all the charm and finesse of an angry reptile. There was a discrepancy with the amount charged and the menu price. When you deal with customers some will be fine, some rude, or drunk, or impossible to please no matter what. In the service industry you have to know how to finesse the customer and make them think you understand their concern. This poor excuse for a manager had none of the required talents to placate anyone but immediately took a hostile stance and thought arguing and bullying would win out. Picked the wrong customer to try that crap with. I told him if I were his boss I would fire him on the spot. I imagine he's related to the owner because there is no way he rose through the ranks to obtain the title of manager on his own merits. We were able to call ahead, so when we got there we were seated and our food came out pipping hot. I got the two item combo, tamale and chili verde with refried beans and rice. The tamale. You guys THE TAMALE was one of the best I've had in a long time. And my family makes them every year lol. It wasn't dry, amazing ratio of masa and meat. It was delicious. Nothing wrong but also nothing to be excited about. Run of the mill. My biggest issue was how greasy it was. I had the shrimp taco and the hubby had the street tacos. Shrimp were cooked well so that's a plus! But all of our tacos were completely soaked in grease. Flavor was good but nothing that would blow your socks off. Also, the fish is tilapia, doesn't say on the menu but that eliminated the fish option for me. Ice tea was very very weak, barely colored water. Service was great. Last night we had a work party at Beer NV next door so we all ordered from here. Food was not good. Most people got sick from it and overpriced for the quality and amount. I got the $20 plate of camarones a la diabla and it was mostly just onions in the sauce, barely any shrimp. Their hot salsa that you order with chips for $9, was extremely watery. I noticed the people waiting had changed, so I went to ask how much longer. They had passed over is, the manager had come out and started talking to people and taking them inside. They had moved 3 groups beyond us! We were not happy! After we were seated, we asked 4 different people for chips and salsa. I finally went and asked the bartender. We go to this restaurant a lot, normally the service is great! I'm chalking up tonight to them being busy. They do have the best chips and salsa in town. My wife and I just ate here this evening and had a decent experience. First off, it was very busy - most likely because it's a new addition to South Reno. There was plenty of parking thanks to the shopping center the restaurant is located in. Once we were seated we were given, chips, a hot and mild salsa and our water. The chips were room temperature and tasted OK (they don't taste or look like they are made there). The salsas were pretty good. We ordered some of the regular margaritas. They were made with Jose Cuervo which I'm not a fan of but I've yet to find any place in town that actually puts decent tequila in their 'top shelf' margarita. Usually you're better off ordering a shot and a beer, IMHO. Unfortunately the margaritas were all mix and no tequila. Neither of us tasted or felt the margaritas we were served so that was disappointing ($6.50 per margarita). My wife ordered the fish tacos and I ordered a chimichanga (shredded beef) without any rice and beans. Our meals came out very fast, almost too fast but that was OK, we were hungry. My wife's plate was WAY too hot - so hot that the tacos were inedible for about 10 minutes. My chimichanga was at a good temperature and covered in cheese. It was cut up which was a little weird as I honestly prefer it as a 'whole' burrito. The first thing I realized was that the meat was extremely salty. Not so much that I couldn't eat it but very salty nonetheless. The fish tacos lacked cabbage which is usually a staple with them which was unfortunate. All in all however, it wasn't too bad and the service was excellent. We're going to give it another try in the next couple weeks. I really hope they can do well because it is really nice to have more restaurants down south. read more

I ordered takeout from Los Compadres on their website. I got the "create your own combo" with three items (don't judge me, I was starving LOL). I ordered it with a chicken enchilada, a chili relleno, and a Colorado burrito. It was all cheesy and delicious covered in a tasty red sauce. I also had their chips and guacamole as an appetizer and tried some sopapillas for dessert. The sopapillas came with sides of strawberry jam and honey packets to ensure your dessert is extra sweet and sticky. The guacamole was a good start and the sopapillas were the perfect ending. We came based upon the reviews. Overall it is hard to find. But entering the restaurant we were greeted immediately. They were quick to bring water and chips. Salsa? Would not say they brought salsa, they brought cold sauce. Enchilada sauce? 2 types which we didn't understand because they were both mild. We ordered a tostada with shredded beef, a chile relleno and chile Verde. I also requested whole beans. The order was delivered within a reasonable time. The whole beans was not on our plate. We didn't complain and ate the tostada first. Lacking flavor we added the hot sauce "salsa". It was fine. Tried the Chile Verde. It was fine. Tried the chile Relleno. It was fine. This is a American Mexican restaurant. Nothing authentic here. The waiter was impatient. I wouldn't come back. A great place if you like mild American Mexican meals. In the past, I'd say this is a good, low-down no-frills Mexican place. Decent typical decor and ambiance. LOTS of beans, rice and 'fillers' (whether you want them or not to make the food cost lower on their end) but when you get past that stuff, the food isn't bad. Guacamole is VERY good. Normally the drinks are what you'd expect, you get what you order. This last time I as there, I ordered my normal, premium tequila and soda with a splash of juice. I was watching the bartender make everyone else's drinks (I didn't see him make mine) and I noticed he was pouring some sort of bottom shelf cheap liquor in the drinks. I didn't really think about it until I got home and was SA-MASHED after only 2 of my usual drinks. The next day I felt pretty worse for wear. Thinking it was that drinks were stronger than normal, I shrugged it off. Later in that same day, I was a train wreck. MASSIVE Migraine, nauseous and overall just felt TERRIBLE. I was trying to figure out how I could feel so bad after ONLY 2 drinks. My usual drinks almost NEVER give me hangovers and that's only when I drink a LOT of them. This was something else entirely. I'm convinced that the bartender put some super cheap (homemade??) super strong alcohol in the drinks. All I can say is, thank god I wasn't driving. I for sure would have gotten a DUI. I can no longer trust the drinks there. And let's face it, this is the kind of place where the drinks make you not care about the less than stellar food. read more

Came here to have a quick dinner by myself while I'm out working, had a very pleasant experience. I was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley in California and just moved to Reno very recently, so I can be a bit of a harsh critic of Mexican food, so I'm so glad to have found some good Mexican food that really hits close to home. The service was amazing, my food came to my table surprisingly quick. The camerones rancheros was cooked perfectly, the margarita was very good though lacked a bit of strength. The tortilla chips were thin and crispy. My only real complaint is the salsa was very mild, I wished it had more kick to it. I definitely plan on coming back sometime and exploring more of the menu, maybe next time I'll ask them to turn up the heat a little. read more
