I visited here for the first time with some co-workers. The food was great, and the service was quick for our party size. I tried a few tacos that were special for Taco Tuesday ($1 off each). It's been a few years since I had lunch here and not much has changed. The service is still pretty quick and the ladies are polite. Happiest hours is from 3-5pm weekdays We wanted tacos for lunch so I had the barbacoa, asada, carnitas, and Al pastor. Not sure why I needed to eat 4 tacos in the middle of the day but hey, it happened. The barbacoa was the star of the show, super tasty and a decent amount. The carne asada was a great runner up, would definitely have more. Hubby had the chorizo, barbacoa, and asada, and he agreed the barbacoa was excellent. I had the mango margarita, it was on the sweet side but a good amount. We were in and out in like 30mins which is perfectly fine by me. read more

It was okay I ordered the carne asada la Mexicans steak nachos , fruit cocktail and Elote in a cup . I didn't care for the tasteless cheese whip yellow cheese on the nachos . I really wish it was the white queso otherwise the nachos Would have been amazing . The Elote in the cup was just was Not good at all . I had some authentic Elote recently and was expecting the same or similar taste and it just didn't meet expectations at all it was a a waste of $8. Another great authentic Mexican food place which is a rare in this state. I would definitely recommend you calling ahead to order because just showing up was not it for me hunny. It was crowded and there was a line almost wrapped around the building, however I do understand because this place is delicious. The staff worked really hard taking orders as well as presenting them and making sure everything was correct. Stopped by for a quick lunch to take out. I ordered carne asada tacos, esquite, charro beans, and a carne asada torta. Everything was around $34. When i arrived they were out of esquite, so they took it off my bill. They did offer me elote but i didn't want it. The girl at the counter was nice while i paid for my food. The atmosphere was real chill. When i got home the food wasn't hot any longer so it changed the texture of the tacos. I'd say if you eat it there its probably a better experience. The tacos were ok. I liked the green sauce that went with it. The red sauce was hot, hot, hot... I took 1 bite and knew the red sauce wasn't for me... Lol. But if you like spicy, you should try it. The charro beans were my favorite. They had good flavor!! The torta was alright, a little salty but still ok. The bread was soft and good. My boyfriend took me here to make up for the Las Tapatias/Costa Del Mar scandal that occurred the day before. We originally went to Las Tapatias because he raved about it and their website said they had elote, but their entire business model had changed as they had been bought out by another restaurant, replacing the menu. I digress. We walk into the restaurant and are met with Latin American music and a cool interior that reminds me of Plaza Azteca before they got remodeled. I love restaurants like this. We are seated quickly and given menus and chips. I search and make sure... yes they have elote. Lol. The menus are kind of hard to read because they are kind of all over the place and not organized in a concise way. However, we eventually figure out what we want to order. The language barrier was kind of an issue, I think, because I ordered cheese dip and 2 elotes, with a side of sour cream for my entrée later. She brought the elotes and sour cream, but later we find out that our cheese dip order didn't get put in, so we ordered it down the line once our entrées come out. For our entrées, I go with a shrimp quesadilla as usual and my partner got 2 birria tacos (no consomme) and a beef tongue torta. Our food comes out fairly quickly, and our chips and drinks are refilled often as we wait. The salsa that comes with the chips was flavorful and spicy. I tried some of the sauces given to us, just on a chip for each, and they were sooo spicy to me (not complaining, it's just my tastebuds). So I just had the salsa and it was delicious. First, we share the elote. It was served steaming hot, with lots of cotija cheese. This was some of the best elote I've had. The corn came right off the cob, and it was just seasoned and coated to perfection. Yum!!! Our entrées come and my boyfriend notices that he wasn't served the beef tongue torta, but a normal carne torta. He was a little irked, but no big deal. I heard him ordering it and he definitely said beef tongue, but she said "beef?" and he said yes. So just another miscommunication. Again, no big deal, he enjoyed the carne torta regardless. It was a huge sandwich!! There was a hearty portion of meat and veggies in a toasted roll. The birria tacos were scarfed down before I could take a picture. He always forgets that I like to Yelp! Lol. My shrimp quesadilla was yummy and deliciously cheesy. It was served with rice and beans. I used my sour cream for dipping it. It was just cheese and lots of shrimp, which I liked. Sometimes, when there's veggies, it just seems like filler. It was great!! We ask the waitress if we had ordered cheese dip, in a polite way to see if it'd remind her. She just looked really confused. So we put in the order for cheese dip as we ate our entrées. It's always awkward for me when that happens. But we tipped her well. One weird thing is it was hard to get her attention because she and all the other waitresses were taking shots at the bar and going over to sit with a noisy table and drinking there as well. I dunno, just not a good look to me I guess. The cheese dip came really quickly after, and it was very tasty and a little spicy, served with more chips. Always a fan of cheese dip from a good Mexican restaurant. Definitely come here for some authentic Mexican food and for their elote. Such good food!! With the service, just make sure they have your order down. I think it's because I ordered a bunch of stuff at once that they didn't get my cheese dip in, and my boyfriend misunderstood her about the torta. But everything came out great in the end. read more

Stumbled upon this place while traveling to Virginia Beach. I've eaten good Mexican food across 12 states during my regional visits. This place has GREAT food!! if you see a Mexican restaurant that says authentic Mexican food you need to run. This is the real deal. I took my Hispanic business partner, and he stated it taste exactly like home in Mexico. I was the only non-Spanish-speaking person in the restaurant and I was glad he interpreted for me. Came for my grandpa's birthday celebration and it was a great choice for him since he loves real authentic Mexican food. Food was fresh and authentic just small quantity for the price in my opinion. She told me my $10 huarache was going to be big and it was barley bigger than a sope. Left the restaurant hungrier then I normally would than say, a taco shop in San Diego where we're from. They put a sombrero on my grandpa and sang and he loved it, even gave him a shot of tequila, that was sweet, thank you. Overall, great experience just pricey for the value. read more

I had tacos and guacamole here and the food was excellent. The guacamole was fresh and the best I have ever had.

I will start off by saying that for it being a NON busy restaurant, it sure was difficult to get someone's attention when needed. The place is kind of outdated but clean. The menu had a large variety of items which all sounded very appetizing. They should probably update the menu or make it larger because it was extremely crowded and some things would be hard to miss. I had the tacos de lengua which were delicious. Unlike most mexican restaurants the meals did not come accompanied with any sides (I.e. rice and beans). I ordered a side of them anyway because, when in Rome. When the waitress brought them out she brought a plate with two styrofoam cups, one had rice and the other beans. So odd. The waitress seemed extremely distracted, overall I would have to say the customer service was not good which is a shame because the food and drinks were great! read more

This review has been slept on for months and months, but finally it's time to spill the beans. On March 14th, my girlfriend and I joined friends of a social group I run for some lunch. At that time, COVID numbers were low and Governor Northam announced we had to be cautious about being in public, especially when it came to gatherings indoors. Little did we know that things were about to change when the pandemic started to ramp up and businesses of all kinds were told to shutdown, some of them permanently to where they closed up shop. So without further adieu, let's describe how this atmosphere was before we had to live in the 'new normal'. Thank to a fellow Yelper (thank you Dennis C.), I picked this little spot tucked away in a small strip mall. There weren't many people inside on a Saturday afternoon and we were probably the biggest table (6 people). I had a craving for tacos. So for my choice, I picked 4 tacos (chorizo, pollo, asada and chicharrones) with onions and cilantro. Also on hand were green and red sauces to use for spice, possibly tomatillo and of course, hot (not sure as to what peppers were included). The chorizo, asada and pollo tacos were on point and delicious. If I remember correctly, the asada was #1 on my list. Unfortunately, the chicharrones was a let down. I'm used to having crunch on mine (check out the review for Taqueria La Patrona), but this one tasted like it was stewed and very tough to eat. I couldn't even eat past halfway on this one compared to the others (hence the 4-star review). But there's no harm saying I tried it here. And along with the garnishes, both sauces added a lot of flavor to my food. This was a very nice visit to a hidden place. I just hope that down the road when things get much better, we're able to come back here and enjoy each other's company with no worries of getting sick. read more

Edited to note that this was not cinco de mayo, it was the week before, April 28. After a long flight on a Wednesday afternoon we wanted to grab a bite to eat before driving. They had good reviews and Mexican is always a good idea until it's not. I was under the impression there was outdoor seating per Yelp, but there wasn't. We went inside still and were seated in a booth. We looked over the menu and ordered. Two waters, two mango margaritas, veggie enchiladas no beans, and veggie fajitas. We were brought chips and salsa and they're homemade salsas. The chips weren't warm but they were good. I liked all 3 salsas, mild (regular), medium (red bottle), and hot (green bottle). Drinks were brought over and we were excited but then quickly disappointed. It tasted like a slushie, no alcohol. We let the server know and she told the bartender who tried to remedy the situation by putting what tasted like cheap tequila to help but it didn't. I canceled my drink and sipped my water. The presentation of the food was nice but the taste was meh. There wasn't much flavor on my enchiladas and the veggies of my boyfriend's fajitas were bright but not seasoned well. Overall this was not the experience we expected and we left dissatisfied. Maybe the meat options are better but as for veggies and the margaritas, I don't recommend. read more

The lady and I were in the mood for authentic street tacos and our original place was closed until 2pm. We couldn't wait that long so checked this place out. Very authentic tasting tacos! We got shrimp, lengua, buche, and cabeza tacos. The tacos were so delicious, and cooked perfectly. They just melted in your mouth with a burst of flavor! Just as good as the spot we go to. There was a language barrier with our waitress which was completely fine, she was very nice! If anything, that adds to the authenticity of this restaurant! We will be coming back for sure! read more

3.5 stars If you are looking for an authentic Mexican food around the area, this is one of the places that should be on your list. This place makes you feel like you are in Mexico. It has flags that serves as their banderitas and has a little store that sells Mexican candies, rosaries, and things. When it comes to the food, Los Cuates Taqueria has the best fajitas I've ever had. It is rich in flavor and it has a lot of spices that I've never had on any fajitas I've had before. The presentation looks good as well because they used different colors of bell peppers. We tried their carne asada and it is good as well, especially when the grilled jalapeño is sliced. I am not a big fan of their elotes in a cup because it us soggy and bland. And to end our meal, we ordered magonada, which is a frozen mango ice with tajin and chamois. If you get this, you are in for a sour treat. If we enjoyed our meal so much, why am I giving this restaurant 3.5 stars? It's because their service is so slow. The staff is very nice and helpful, however we have to wait 30 minutes for our food and another 30 minutes for our dessert. To sum this meal, I am pretty sure we will be back for more fajitas. While their service might be slow, they have a pretty good customer service. I just recommend to be patient when waiting for your food and do not come here if you are in a time crunch. read more

I have eaten at most of the Mexican restaurants in the area, this place ranks at the bottom. Couldn't finish the food, utensils were dirty, flies everywhere. Kitchen, (not the waitress) messed up the orders. Everyone's food was extremely greasy and the meat was tough. Top it off with two family members got mildly to moderately sick from the food. I've heard great things about Los Cuates Taqueria authentic Mexican menu. So with it being Friday and having a hankering for a margarita why not. I'm unsure why the GPS acted funny in locating them. They are just South of Virginia Beach Blvd on Newtown in the same strip as Tony's Hot Dogs. Parking is directly in front of the business and the lot and walks were clean. I arrived a couple minutes prior to a 11 AM opening and was greeted by the owner. The restaurant is divided up into sections of dining room and bar. There are additional booths and tables in the bar which had has around 8-10 comfy seats. The Latino music was turned on as I took a seat at the bar. My waitress brought out a menu and I ordered a 20 oz margarita. I joked with her about Jessy's having the best and asked if they could duplicate it. I ordered the shredded beef burrito with side of rice. The waitress was friendly and smiled but no bueno. She got another staff that confirmed my order. This could be a limitation for gringos like me. A few neat things they have available to customers. They have a Mexican store and candy stand. This seemed to be pretty unique and I know of no other Mexican restaurant that has this. My food was out in around 15 minutes and served in a basket which I assume is customary. I asked for a plate which they accommodated quickly. Everything looked great and smelled fantastic. The dish was served with a single napkin and fork rolled up. A knife would be useful for some clientele, but not me. I picked it up and enjoyed the first hot delicious bite. The beef was tender and scrumptious, I loved it! The rice did not do much for me, but was good. Staff did check in with me at the appropriate time. The bartender asked how my margarita was too! I can honestly say the margarita was as good as Jessy's. She jokingly said "not better"? Next time it's the 32 oz. I asked for the check and hit the unisex restroom that's just off the bar in a corner. This was the only disappointing aspect of the review. Although everything worked and there was proper supplies the space was rough and the room was blazing hot. The walls had holes in them and the toilet paper dispenser was broken. TP was kept at a nearby rail. I did comment to the owner when exiting. Checkout was smooth and I was on my way. Much more positive then negative. They've remodeled and doubled the size of the restaurant. It's more nicely decorated than before, with wood and cowhide. There are more wait staff resulting in faster service. And they bring the credit card machine to your table so you never lose sight of your card. Mostly I've only seen this overseas. They've kept and improved the bar although you can no longer buy a piñata. The barbacoa burrito is as delicious as ever! Caldo de res (beef soup) is perfect for a cold day. read more

Came in with high hopes - we're from South Texas and have been looking to find good Mexican / TexMex food since moving here. The food was...fine. Nothing to write home about, but not much real flavor going on. Also, they are so stingy with limes. What did bother us was the shrimp cocktail we ordered. We were excited since it's so hard to find real shrimp cocktail up north (served in a big goblet with the sauce, pico, etc). For one, they were apparently out of avocado (how does a Mexican place run out of avocado in the middle of the day?) but didn't see fit to say so when we were ordering. It's a major ingredient! The sauce was watered down and the whole thing just tasted like nothing. Didn't bother finishing it - and those things aren't cheap. Probably won't be back. read more

It's a Saturday afternoon and me and my wife draw restaurant names from a hat and Los Cuates Taqueria was the winner for our dinner outing. This restaurant is located in the Newtown Shopping Center, a few doors down from the Kyushu sushi restaurant. This place doesn't look too inviting from the outside; they actually have blacked out windows so I thought we were going inside of a dingy pool hall. Hesitant, but we still decided to dine here. We were seated immediately and had two different waitresses serving us and taking our orders. We were given a basket of chips and some salsa which were just okay. There are two parts to the restaurant and one side has a bar and more dining in options. I got three tacos: the lengua (beef tongue), carnitas and the fried pork stomach/intestines. These were some of the best tacos I've had in quite some time. I especially enjoyed the fried pork stomach intestines - they were super juicy and packed with flavor. I would come here again just for three of those tacos. Their green salsa is very spicy and I would use it lightly. My wife got the barbacoa tacos and raved about them as well. I also got some churros which were COVERED in cinnamon sugar and was too much. Before we checked out, there's a little candy bar near the register and we were able to score some authentic Hispanic candies that I haven't been able to find anywhere else! read more

I am from El Paso, Texas I hadn't found a place in Hampton Roads for a couple years when I got here in 2015 but then I found this place in 2017 and I can say that this is the place I go to when I want to feel like I am eating at home. They have a wide variety of mexican/tex-mex dishes. A variety of tacos, I have tasted most of them and they are all pretty good. One thing that I do not like though is the salsa that comes with their chips, it is like a watered down tomato sauce with onions. Then again back home is not a custom to be served chips and salsa when you dine in. So it's a definitely a plus. read more
