Our latest dining adventure took us to Los Hornos, a family-owned restaurant near the airport off Skyview Drive, and the sign outside says it perfectly: "Argentinian Flavors." The restaurant has been open about four years, but the recipes go back much further. The family's original sister restaurant in Argentina dates back to 1987, and the food absolutely feels rooted in tradition and authenticity. This was actually my first experience trying Argentinian food. From the Milanesas section of the menu, I ordered the Napolitana, topped with tomato sauce, ham, and cheese. I later learned it's supposedly soccer legend Lionel Messi's favorite dish. To me, it reminded me a bit of a deep-fried German schnitzel, in the best possible way. It came with delicious fries that disappeared quickly. My wife absolutely loved the freshly made empanadas. One detail we thought was clever: each empanada is stamped with a number identifying the filling, which makes ordering and sharing much easier. The surprise star of the meal was the Rogel cake for dessert. Thin, flaky layers packed with dulce de leche and topped with toasted meringue/ rich, crunchy, sweet and absolutely unforgettable Another fun surprise was the robot that delivers the food from the kitchen before the server brings it to your table. A small touch, but memorable. The pricing is incredibly reasonable, especially considering how authentic and satisfying the food is. I met a few people in a Meet Up Group here. I had no idea this place existed. I'm a fan of empanadas. Los Hornos had exactly what I wanted. I had a ham and cheese empanada that was average. So, I ordered a corn and cheese empanada, and that was exactly as I expected. It was delicious. I also ordered the Marcia Lucia cake. Do order this cause it's awful to try to make at home. It was delicious. The robot server was always visiting our table. He's a cutie. Now, I loved the empanadas. But ordered lemonade and it was the most inedible lemonade I've ever had in my mouth. Either someone forgot the sugar, or it wasn't made to be sweetened. It was so awful, I used all of our sugar which mostly did the trick. Don't order lemonade if you go. Do order the cheese corn empanada and sangria. Lot's of Lionel Messi and World Cup. I enjoyed it cause this is an Argentina restaurant. Los Hornos is a convenient stop, if you're in the area but the overall experience was pretty average for me. The food was okay. Nothing stood out in terms of seasoning, but nothing was completely off either. It landed in that middle ground where it's serviceable but not memorable. I ordered the 10-ounce ribeye steak and unfortunately went with the dreaded medium well. It came out tougher than expected and closer to well-done, which took away from what should have been the highlight of the meal. The rice also lacked seasoning and felt a bit flat. The mini empanada was underwhelming and honestly not worth more than a couple of bites. One odd detail was the presence of a robot waiter. For an establishment with a fairly dated interior, it felt out of place and a bit surprising, almost like two very different dining eras collided in one space. On a positive note, the house Chardonnay at $4.99 a glass is a solid value and easy to add to the meal without thinking twice. Overall, it's an okay option if you're in the area and need a quick sit-down meal near the airport, but not a place I'd go out of my way for. read more

I just went here for a later lunch/early dinner and I wanted to get enough things to sample. I ordered a spicy tucumana (brisket) empanada, la parrillada for one with chimichurri rice, and a milanesa napolitana to go. I also tried the quilmes beer. There wasn't that many people when I was there around 3pm on a Saturday, but even still the service was prompt and the server was helpful since I've never tried Argentinean food before. The quilmes Argentinean beer to me tasted and reminded me of a corona and nothing to write home about, but I got 3 of them so I can get the free glass. As far as food goes, I started with the empanada. The dough work was very clean and pretty and the filling was very juicy, tasty and the spice was nice. As far as the parrillada, this was wonderful to eat, with a decent sampling of what they offer. The parrillada came with 1 chorizo, 1 morcilla (blood sausage), short ribs, pork flank steak, molleja (sweetbreads), bread, and their chimichurri and chimichurri mayo dipping sauces. The meat overall was very tender. I especially liked the beef short ribs which were cooked properly (they came out nice and pink, maybe medium rare, and I didn't even have to tell them). I also really liked the sweetbreads and blood sausage, with the sweetbreads having a nice chewy texture and good flavor and the blood sausage being very delicious as well. The pork flank steak was also a decent cut, and the whole platter overall was delicious and trying out each item with both dipping sauces. The chimichurri is definitely different compared to Brazilian chimichurri but in a good way! Their chimichurri is reddish in color and very tangy, with the chimichurri mayo being a nice twist. The milanesa napolitana which is sort of a fried beef cutlet topped with ham, cheese, and tomato sauce on its own is very satisfying to eat and they did the fried the French fries good being nice and crispy. This is definitely a place I'm taking the family to when they come to visit. Truth be told this was a fact finding mission about Argentinean food since me and the wife are planning to move there when we retire, and I am happy to report that if the food in Argentina is like what we had at Los Hornos, we will have nothing to worry about! read more

Very disappointing. My wife ordered a steak. It was undercooked and cold. We sent all this back. My meal, a combination plate was ok. Sad to say. With so many restaurants to choose from. Very good Argentinian cuisine!! I walked here and got an order to go; as you walk in there's a desk with a tablet and a menu and you can place your to go order. Or you can sit at a table and eat in if you prefer. I got the Argentine Tabla (for 1) and a sfija empanada. Both were excellent!!! The Tabla came with a side of their chimichurri sauce and a side of their house Mayo. I actually bought a jar of their chimichurri sauce to take home. The sfija empanada is middle eastern inspired so it was a cool melding of 2 different cultures in one delicious stuffed pastry!!! Food was underwhelming and very expensive. I was surprised how expensive the empanadas were for how small they are.

I came to Los Hornos because of all the great reviews, but my experience was the complete opposite. The empanadas started off promising, but unfortunately they weren't fully cooked--when I took a bite, the center was still cold. The skirt steak was even more disappointing. It arrived overcooked on the outside, tough, and tasted like the meat wasn't fresh. As for the chicken Milanese, it was by far the worst dish of the night. It was completely smothered in cheese and grease to the point where you couldn't taste the chicken at all. Overall, the food was extremely underwhelming, and I don't understand the hype. I'd recommend saving your time and money and going elsewhere. read more

THIS PLACE IS FANTASTICO! - Huge, traditional menu, superbly prepared. Their "Morcilla" tasted homemade and was superbly prepared, light, flavorful with an amazing thin snappy skin. Their calves brain provencal was as good as any from Rome or Paris, delightfully light and carefully prepared so it had body yet no chewyness. Really wanted to like this place but they are completely clueless on allergies here. Ordered the humita which I was told was GF and DF. Explained I had allergies. Came with a layer of cheese on top. They remade it and I took a few bites and it clearly still had either dairy or gluten in it as I felt terrible (I have overactive histamine response from Hashimoto's). This cute cafe is worth the drive up north. Once you're seated you get an option of still or sparking water. They have specials to get a drink and a food item. Wow! My sisters and I had just flown into KC for a long weekend and wanted to grab a bite. We saw the wonderful reviews for Los Hornos just 5 minutes away from the airport and oh, what a find! Meghan greeted us and was so wonderful explaining the dishes and giving us some great suggestions. We split empanadas (delicious), a few salads and a divine squash and corn soup served in a bread bowl (my favorite!). Make sure to save room for dessert and coffee! We split 3 huge slices of the most delicious layered pastry like cakes and tortes and washed it down with lattes that were just divine. It's nice to find a non-chain restaurant with delicious homemade food and great service. Kudos to Los Hornos! read more

What a pleasant surprise this place was! I was taking my son to the airport for his flight so we arrived early enough to have a late lunch and a few beers. Megan was fabulous and took great care of us until she had to leave (for her dog's birthday party...love that!). Then the owner, Iso stepped in and took care of us. I must say the food was amazing, as was the service. It's a little bit of a drive for me (I live in South JOCO), but it will be my go-to stop when traveling in/out of KCI! What a yummy find! Empanadas are an easy choice for me, little pockets of deliciousness. This place did not disappoint. I drive by this place daily and glad we finally stopped to try it. Full of flavor! I did find the prices a bit expensive, but then again, the portions were very filling. The kids meal was perfect! Oh, so very, very good. Got here on a quiet Saturday late morning and had to decide between lots of new menu items. This is not a Mexican restaurant but a truly authentic Argentinian food. Started with a half carafe of really delicious, tart sangria. Would have loved to polish off a whole jug, but there is still yardwork to be done at home! M had the chorizo sammie and fries. Great flavor and perfect balance of spices. I finally decided on a milanesas, thé A Caballo in beef with two fried eggs. It doesn't come with sauce but I asked for chimichurri which was a good choice. Dry without but delicious with. French fries were lightly fried and seasoned and lovely. We ended with the Maria Luisa cake which was different than anything I've ever tasted and absolutely delicious. This is a fairly new place and I want it to THRIVE!! Located in a small shopping center close to the KC International Airport, I was eager to try Los Hornos having recently returned from a trip to Argentina. The restaurant itself was clean and comfortable and the service, though a bit slow, was helpful and very friendly. The choripan sandwich was good but surprisingly small; the grilled sausage pieces should have been larger. The desserts looked good and I enjoyed my flan with dulce de leche..
