    Spinach pie
    Kim S.

If you're looking for an unforgettable dining experience in Shawnee, Kansas, look no further than this hidden Argentinian gem. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by stunning decor that instantly transports you to the heart of Buenos Aires. Warm wood accents and vintage photographs create a welcoming and immersive atmosphere. Tonight I tried the spinach pie, and fell in love. It's rich, perfectly seasoned, and baked in a delicious pie crust. Before that I went for the cheese empanada. Trust me-don't skip the empanadas. Absolutely divine. Each one is golden, filled generously, and packed with authentic flavors that make it hard to stop at just one. All in all, this place is a standout for its ambiance, hospitality, and mouthwatering dishes. Whether you're here for a dinner or afternoon tea, it's the kind of spot you'll want to return to again and again.

What a letdown this was. My parents had gone twice previously and enjoyed the food and, shall we say, interesting atmosphere so we did their wedding anniversary there as just a fun, interesting thing to do. But from the moment we walked in the vibe was strange. The owner wasn't there and while she should be able to take a day off, I don't think things are up to her standard when she's not there. First impression is it feels like an antique store, so crowded with furniture (could literally lose half the chairs and still be plenty full of furniture) that it's hard to maneuver around and the tables are jammed together. Maybe with the owner there, it has a warmer atmosphere, but there were just 2 people working and 3 other tables. So it just felt strange. Anyway, we came in and the waiter greeted us right away. My mom had made reservations which he seemed confused by but he sat us at a table with the reserved sign. The tablecloth was dirty under the placemats. You get paper napkins you'd use at home in a napkin holder so kind of a confusing concept (is it casual or fine dining?). Anyway, the waiter brought us waters right away and then that's where things got extra odd. It probably took 30 mins before he took our orders. It wasn't busy and food wasn't coming out of the kitchen at a crazy pace so not sure why there was such a wait. My mom had raved about the tastes of Argentina (ToA) so me and my fiance and my mom all got that and my dad got the choripan. The waiter said it may take a bit for the food to come out and would bring some empanadas to snack on and like 5 mins later he brought out the ToAs for the 3 of us and an empanada for my dad. Said the kitchen was faster than he expected. That plate set a very poor start to the meal. It was a barely dressed pile of spinach with 3 slices of tomato and 2 pieces of onion, a tea sandwich, a random roasted red pepper, a scoop of potato salad and a lukewarm empanada. The empanada was poorly reheated - it had cold cheese in the middle, which I assume was meant to be melty as the pastry was warmish. After about 10 mins, my dad's sandwich came out. It was just a spinach salad and the sandwich, which while big, didn't seem like a good deal for $30-some. Then our second plate of the ToA which was actively bad came out. It had a mini choripan, which was decent but it was literally a piece of sausage in bread with mustard and lettuce. And the 2 milaneses were gross. Both looked and tasted like they'd been leftovers from yesterday, reheated in the microwave. Same with the pizza. Tasted like yesterday's frozen pizza reheated in the microwave. I only ate half of the plate. Then it finished with a pretty good dessert plate, so I'll give them that. My impression of ToA is that they use leftovers to make it. They do a daily tea service and probably prep most of this stuff ahead and throw whatever there is extra of into the ToA. My mom said it's different every time she's there, which would explain the randomness of it all. I was so disappointed because I have read all the good reviews and even had them from my family and it was all so mediocre. If I were voting solely on the food, it'd be a 2. But we did have a nice waiter and I know the owner is hustling to make the business a success and I don't want to wreck her rating. But my advice would be to trim the menu down to like 3-4 apps, 5-6 entrees, and a couple of salads, things that are delicious and fresh. Currently she's doing too much: lunch, dinner, brunch, afternoon teas, tango dances, and a podcast, that's too much, especially when you are resorting to serving customers leftovers from those meals in the form of a mixed tastes dish. And it can't decide if it's high end or not. Change tablecloths between customers and give cloth napkins if you are going to use tablecloths, or just wipe down the tables in between customers and do the napkin dispensers. And just to put a finer point on it, if you can't do it all the way successfully, pare back until you can. Shorter, more focused menu can be prepared fresh for customers (get the microwave out of the kitchen). Remove furniture so it's a comfortable space, and not so crowded. Keep the place settings simple, and remove the huge sugar service from the tables when it's not tea time. It's an interesting concept, but I just can't see how you'd keep it in business with how she's running things right now.

    Beautiful interior space

So, I've heard about this place all over the web in a few different places. I'm glad that it's super close by. The decorative interior is amazing. It's like an antique mall meets home meets restaurant. The staff were super friendly and the owner is amazing! I ordered the Mate tea. You gotta know what this is. There are 2 kinds...in a tea bag and you can do a traditional version in a gourd. We decided to try then"Taste of Argentina". It's 4 courses and super filling. This takes a bit of time, so come hungry and come with no requirements on your time.

    Chicken Milanese sampler plate. Yum!

Open less than a month, this place is the epitome of South American charm and hospitality. The owner Claudia greeted us the minute we walked in and suggested a big booth up front. She was quick to point out all the little nooks in the restaurant if patrons want to have a leisurely game of cards or chess. Before even looking at the menu, she suggested the Taste of Argentina option--an epic sampler plate of all of her favorites, including empanadas, chicken Milanese, Argentinian pizza and the list goes on. After the fifth course of small plates, we were all stuffed. But the food kept coming, including her homemade raviolis. She finished us off with a smattering of her homemade cakes and tortes. Best $35 I've ever spent. If you're in a hurry, this isn't the place for you. Everything is prepared to order, so our lunch was a leisurely two-hour culinary adventure. I'm tickled to have stumbled across this place, a perfect mix of sweet and savory options. (And ladies, there's a fab tea service, if that's your jam.)

What a tea time delight! My friends and I enjoyed a lovely Saturday afternoon tea that was relaxed and easy going. The environment makes you feel like you traveled outside of Kansas and the menu for tea was such a lovely assortment of savory and sweet. Each was delicious. Service was exceptional.

I took 5 of my family members over the weekend. They were not thrilled about getting out of the house, hangry, and kinda skeptical about trying Argentinian cuisine. They ordered food that they couldn't pronounce (lol) and sat waiting patiently as the chef prepared in the back. Once the dishes arrived, their eyes lit up and the whole vibe changed. I watched as they devoured plate after plate, all smiles and sparkly eyed. I'd say I have a pretty picky family, but everyone agreed, this was the best food we have ever eaten! Everything from the appetizers to desserts were out of this world!!! It's a family owned restaurant, and they put SO much love into everything. I always leave here feeling so fulfilled and happy. If you're hungry, having a bad day, or just want to try something new, please give this place a try. You won't regret it Side note: this is not American food. It's not fast food. So be patient while they prepare, and get your taste buds ready for the best flavors you'll ever have in Kansas. My mouth is watering as I type this lol Oh! They are also the only place in KC to serve high tea every day at 4pm!! You're welcome in advance

Dessert table to left as you enter. Similar one to the right.

Cozy place. Check out desserts to your right & left as you enter. Very friendly & helpful service. This is not a quick, eat-and-run. Plan to enjoy it leisurely. Food highlights: beef empanadas, potatoes brava a la crème, croque monsieur, chimichurri sauce best I've ever had, and desserts-omg. Best chocolate cake I've ever had (& I've had a lot!), dulce la leche/cheesecake light and bursting with flavor. This is a gem. Just opened couple months ago. One note - don't see that they serve alcohol of any kind, but no sweat. You can bring your own wine, or before/after dinner head to one of the many downtown Shawnee establishments.

Everything flows. It's organized chaos done right. The seasonal drinks are consistently creative and actually good. Not just pretty for Instagram. Balanced, thoughtful, and well executed. And the bakery? Dangerous. The display case is pure temptation. Cinnamon rolls, pecan twists, danishes, cookies, scones. Everything looks like the right choice, which makes choosing impossible. They also have solid brunch plates and sandwiches if you're trying to pretend you're here for something other than sugar and caffeine. Now for the one miss. I ordered the pepper jack breakfast burrito, and unfortunately, it didn't live up to the rest of the experience. Flat flavors, mushy texture, no real identity. The hot sauce was doing most of the work. It felt out of place in a spot that clearly cares about quality. Thankfully, the bakery and coffee saved the day. The pecan twist was flaky, buttery, and just sweet enough. The seasonal latte with cold foam was smooth, balanced, and dialed in. Overall, McLain's is a Kansas City staple for a reason. Efficient, welcoming, and consistently good at what they do. One menu tweak away from being near-perfect. Solid 4-star spot. Would happily come back.

To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan's hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain's, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain's chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and they act as the essential pit stop, providing the fuel that keeps the light of inquiry burning bright. To dine at McLain's is to participate in a ritual of belonging. It is a place where the passage of time is marked not by the ticking of a clock, but by the turning of the oven trays. It is a reliable heartbeat in the neighborhood, steadfast and true, offering a reprieve from the clamor of the outside world. Whether one seeks a quiet moment of reflection over a cup of coffee or a celebratory feast that honors the simple, profound joy of eating well, McLain's remains an unrivaled steward of taste. It is not merely a bakery; it is the living, breathing soul of Waldo, a place where every bite serves as a reminder that some things in this life are exactly as good as they ought to be.
