We learned in our media classes that advertising may get you to try a product or a place that first time, but if the product of the place does not live up to the expectations created by the ad, there won't be a return visit or purchase. Advertising has its place. I'm always dubious of posts that I see from so-called influencers on social media. Especially when I view someone with 20 sets of false eyelashes and enough food for ten delivered to the table and lots of oohs and ahhs. But I'm always willing to check out a new place and make my own decision because it's a fun hobby of mine. And I'm retired and I have plenty of time. Now I've been traveling in Mexico for most of my life because of family and friends that I have there, and I have a real soft spot for the cuisine of Mexico, whether from the seven regions that culinary historians talk about; or the sub regions such as our beloved Tex-Mex, which I love. And so today brings me to this little place up on Airline Drive that I heard about from a so-called influencer on Instagram. Los Mendoza Mexican Restaurant. I'm here in the morning and it's a breakfast all day option kind of place. I get a fruit smoothie (Ilusión) and a tecolota, their riff on a chilaquiles sandwich. The smoothie is excellent and I would come back just for it. They offer an option with or without sugar. A no charge, courtesy consommé with potatoes and fideo arrives. Delicious. I love, cruising down Airline, Irvington, and Fulton, as there are so many places to choose from a Mexican culinary heritage. Not a fancy place by any means (close to the intersection of E. Tidwell and Airline, east of I-45 on the north side of town) but full of Mexican and other Latin diners - an excellent sign! Loved the busy yet respectful vibe. Visited for lunch with friends - even at 11 AM most tables were occupied. We were the only non-Mexican/non-Latin diners at the restaurant. A table large enough to accommodate our group opened up after a bit of wait. The menu featured a refreshingly different set of dishes than the usual Tex-Mex ones. Was heartened to see Cochinita Pibil on the menu - took me back to a visit to the interior areas of Riviera Maya where I first had the dish! Ordered a mason jar of 1/2-1/2 iced tea, the menu featured a number of fruit juices and other non-alcoholic drinks. Faced with a plethora of exciting choices, opted for a the fresh, table-made Salsa Roja with Nacho Chips and three Corn Quesadillas. An excellent choice it turned out to be! The Salsa was crushed fresh via a mortar and pestle - included salt, lemon juice, and roasted tomatoes/serranos/onions and cilantro. A heady, spicy mix- the Quesadillas were angled into the mortar to suggest that they needed to be eaten by dipping them in the Salsa. Portion size was ample. Others ordered Street Tacos, and the like - and enjoyed their meals equally. Each meal came with a tasty cup of pasta soup! A refreshing start. Prices were reasonable, roughly $15-16 per plate. Pretty standard fare for a small Mexican restaurant. Busy on a Sunday morning. Service was quick but kitchen was a bit backed up. The good: -Sopa de fideo was a nice touch. The little flauta it was served with was a good way to try their hot sauces. -The hot sauces were good. It's not often I find bad hot sauces at these places. -Breakfast torta with chorizo and scrambled eggs was good, but why wasn't chorizo+eggs an option for a breakfast plate with beans, potatoes, and tortillas? I looked and looked and the only plate option I saw with scrambled eggs was the nopales plate. The Not so Good: -Chilaquiles were just OK. Green sauce didn't have a lot of flavor. Very muted with the cream and queso fresco. -Not sure if the chilaquiles were sitting on the plate for a while waiting for the chicken or the eggs but the chips were very soggy by the time the plate arrived. -Possibly the driest shredded chicken I've ever had. -Cafe de olla wasn't very good. read more

First time coming to Los Mendoza, and it was a great experience! The food was really good, and the agua de piña was amazing--definitely a highlight. I made reservations, and they seated us quickly without much of a wait, which I appreciated. They also gave complimentary sopa de fideo and a queso flauta, both of which were really tasty. I ordered the chilaquiles verdes--just a bit spicy for my taste, but still full of great flavor. Our server, Juan Carlos, was very attentive and did an excellent job explaining the menu options, which made the experience even better. Pleasant atmosphere, friendly service. Fidelo was much better than expected. Normally not a big fan but this had some tomato flavor in the broth, various noodles and potatoes. Flauta had potato filling. All good. Chilequiles had a good amount of sauce on them, not just salsa dumped on chips that I have had elsewhere. Good flavor and nice with the onions, cilantro and cheese on top. Beans were tasty, too. Prices on drinks were rather high and meal wasn't cheap but it's not Taco Bell. Overall, quite pleased. Wonderful event today, we were fortunate enough to have our end of the year breakfast here and everything was delicious. Started out with a great fruit skewer, and avocado toast that was delicious. Lulu and Juan did a great job taking care of our table. Our second plate was chilaquiles rojos with chorizo and eggs, followed by French toast with fruits and whipped cream. This place is great for authentic Mexican food. They have a variety of dishes from different parts of Mexico and are all reasonably priced. As a starter, everyone gets a complimentary mini bowl of soup and a flauta which is out of the ordinary for restaurants nowadays. At my table, we tried the tacos ahogados, torta ahogada, mojarra frita, cochinita pibil, pancake plate, gordita de barbacoa, flautas, and churros with ice cream. Everything was delicious and no one had a single complaint. They also had a variety of aguas frescas which were very fresh. I had the agua de guayaba, which is rare to find at Mexican restaurants and really liked that it wasn't overly sweet. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. My family I came here after seeing it on TikTok recently; it was a mere 30-40 minute drive. Upon arrival, there was a line outside and we were told there was a 40 minute wait, but that they would call us when a table was ready. We drove around for over an hour and came back as we still hadn't received a phone call. Coincidentally, we were next to be seated; not sure if that was bs or true. Anyhow, upon entering, it wasn't all that big inside. You aren't able to see inside from outside as there are curtains on all of the windows. It definitely was crowded as all the seats were filled. Shortly after sitting down, we were served one cup of soup even though there were four of us. Odd, but the runner came back with three more servings a few minutes later. That soup was DELISH! It was a typical Mexican style vegetarian soup with potato chunks. We placed our order maybe 10 or so minutes later and I ordered the green chilaquiles with a jamaica drink. The meals didn't come out together at all, which was kind of awkward. One came out, then two more, and then finally mine. We were without silverware for a hot minute, too.
