Sigh. I went into this thinking I'd give it a try, just because it was relatively new, and I had to stop at a new pharmacy on the way. When we went in, it was completely dead, which should have been a sign, but I figured it was Super Bowl Sunday. I will say, the Michelada was delicious - if you haven't had one before, it's like a bloody Mary made with beer (I recommend Pacifico) instead of vodka. This place has the most variety of Micheladas I've ever seen, and I will admit it was delicious - the added shrimp was a bonus. However, the waters were slow to be refilled, and it's not great since this is a salty type drink. However, there were no obligatory chips and salsa, but when we ordered the nachos, we were also not offered salsa, but I made sure to ask anyway. While they weren't bad and the portion was just right, the ground beef was extra greasy, and it made the chips a little soggy. Next, I ordered the chimichanga to be on the safe side, and had ordered it with ground beef before the nachos came out. Of course, it came out greasy again, and without salsa. The cheese was at least good, if the overall dish was a little bland. I think I'd go back for drinks, but I'm not confident about much more. read more

Stay away- there is nothing worth eating that is not at every other Mexican restaurant. The music was blasting with a smoke machine and strobe lights flashing throughout the restaurant on a Sunday evening. My husband got a chimichanga- the meat was good (birria meat) but the rest was a disappointment. I ordered the pork carnitas. It was a dry lump of shredded pork sitting on my plate next to dry rice and refried beans. I asked for some sort of sauce. They brought out a side of queso and charged me $4! They brought my meal up to $20 of pure disgusting. Call me old fashion, but I love Mexican restaurants with free chips and salsa I get on my table as soon as I am seated. They wanted $5 for chips snd salsa- come on, really. Needless to say we will never return. We told our server that the food was not good. She said thank you. Food is amazing! We had the birria pizza it's huge, juicy, and down right tasty! You get 4 sauces on the side plus a bowl of consume! The rice is super delicious as well! Horrible food! There were 2 staff members at 5:30 pm on a Tuesday night. They were busy putting away all bar stools away when we walked in. They pointed to a booth and we sat next to the only other party of 3 in the whole restaurant. The boy and girl staff member were really enamored with each other which made it almost impossible for him to wait on 2 tables. We ordered beers which were on tap. He brought us bottles. We asked for glasses and reminded him of the limes. The salsa was one of the cheaper versions out of a jar from Walmart at best. We asked him if they made it fresh at the restaurant he said he thought so. The chips were worse than bad cheap that were greasy and salty from a bag. Guac had zero flavor...the flavors together, someone's basement party at 16 when their parents were out of town. I asked what kind of chicken came on the street taco, without a thought, he said, "big cubes"...I asked if they had any shredded? He had to go to the kitchen and ask the "girl in the kitchen". It was hard for him to wait on both table at once. He was very distracted with the kitchen girl. We asked how long they had been in business...neither knew but collectively they said and agreed on maybe 2 1/2 yrs..probably! Please...save yourself. My family and I were traveling through the Twin Cities area and found a nice motel in the Microtel Inn and Suites. When we checked in we needed to find a restaurant for dinner, and there are many options in the area with a wide range of menus. We decided we were in the mood for Mexican, and Los Portales is less than a mile from the motel. We happened to be there on a Friday evening, and the signs promised music and a "DJ" later in the evening. We simply wanted food and beverages. Our server seemed new, which was not a problem for us (when I requested a ginger ale from the menu, she wasn't sure it was available). Our menu suggested several tempting sounding options, and my wife and I chose a plate of flour-rolled tortillas with chicken, which mentioned sides of rice, beans, guacamole and pico de gallo. My son requested a similar meal, but his included carnitas with mole sauce. It was topped with Queso Fresco. The meal began as most Mexican themed restaurants do, with a basket of chips and salsa, however our chips were fried flour tortilla chips, that appeared yellow. It was different. The chicken meals my wife and I had were disappointing, especially to me. My wife said she enjoyed the Mexican rice and the refried beans (I felt they were too pudding-like) but we agreed the meat in the tortillas was extremely plain (shredded, dry white chicken meat) and our meal didn't have any sauce to moisten the tortilla or add flavor. On the side, the promised guacamole and pico was a garnish of lettuce, sliced tomato and a slice of avocado. I had passed on the idea of ordering guacamole with the chips (to give them additional flavor) in anticipation of the guacamole with my meal, so it meant everything had little flavor. In fairness, my son did say his carnitas with mole sauce and queso fresco was very tasty (also with the vegetable wedge garnish). During the meal, the staff began re-arranging the dining room, presumably for the upcoming "DJ session". Once the floor was cleared, lazer lights and flashing spots were set off while music seemed to come, loudly, from YouTube (there were monitors around the room, and one was showing the YouTube web site and the upcoming playlist). I am sure, if you are in the mood for Mexican food in the St Paul area there are probably better options to investigate. It turned out that we decided to stay in the same motel on our return trip and chose to eat at the Outback Steakhouse across the parking lot. The food is great but they purposefully overcharge customers & claim it's because their new menu's have not arrived yet. My dad went to this restaurant in February & they told him the prices were higher now but that the new menu's have not yet arrived. It is now APRIL & I just had lunch there with my friend. I had ordered a michelada with my food & the menu price is $9.99. I get my receipt & it's $12.77 I asked the server about the change in price & she proceeds to give me the whole schpeel about how the new menus have not yet arrived. I let her know my dad was there 2 months ago & you guys told him the same thing. The waitress was noticeably nervous & said she was working by herself today but that she could call the manager. I told her I would appreciate it. She comes back & only $2 is taken off my bill & proceeds to try & flip it on ME saying I should ask before ordering next time if the new menus are in. That blew my mind & I decided not to argue with with her as it isn't even her establishment. But homegirl got no tip. Sorry not sorry. Pay attention to your receipts & menu prices!! ONLINE PRICES are the same as the ones in restaurant as well!!! They're just trying to rob people! read more
