Hadn't been in for a while and needed some time to review the menu. We were the only ones in the joint and the cashier acted like we didnt exist. She didn't ask if we had questions, no questions about things we might like, just didn't engage at all. Then she wandered off to clean the one dirty table. We walked out. We came in on a Saturday night and it wasn't too crowded. You order at the counter and there is seating inside the restaurant. I ordered the margarita and there aren't variations...it's just the one margarita with tajin on the rim. The food was good, as expected. They have some intriguing breakfast options and I also noticed that their menu is extensive. You can get tongue if that suits your needs. They were flexible in customizing sizes. My parents said this is their go to place for tacos so I had to try it out. Super friendly when ordering. I got a super burrito with the shredded chicken. It was very good and I'm glad they have unlimited salsa to put on top of it. My husband got the California burrito. He loved it as well. Of course my parents got tacos, my dad getting carne asada and my mom getting shredded chicken. I feel like a lot of places don't have a self service salsa bar anymore so it's awesome that we can all try and grab the salsas we want. The place was very clean. This little place was the perfect spot to eat right before a concert. The cashier and waitress were super nice. Chips were warmed under the heating lamp, but chips moved quickly. The sauce bar let's you pick whatever you want. The food was hearty. The portions are super big and very filling. They share their parking with Safeway and other store but still a lot of space. They have a/c so it feels good inside in hot weathers. They also have seating outside so that's good too. This was my second time here so I decided to order a burrito last time I had the quesabirria torta. I'll get into details on that in a bit. The lady greeted us and asked what we would like. Drinks: Fountain drink coke Large horchata Alright let's dig in to the food my friend was the one that ordered the wet burrito. He finished the burrito he said it was very good. Mine burrito was made wrong I had ordered refried beans and they gave me whole beans. I did not want to return it or make a fuzz about it so decided to continue eating it after a few bites I notice that it had so much onions I did not know it was an onion burrito instead of meat. Finally I took a few more bites and found the meat. It was dry and no flavor. But again did not want to do a fuzz about it so I continued to eat. Finally I decided to stop eating this burrito after seeing a hair on the burrito inside by the meat. It was a black curly hair. After looking by where the cook is at I noticed that the person cooking had no hair net and had curly black hair. After almost throwing up my food I decided to throw away the burrito and walk out. Over all disgusting really bad experience. Now like I said I was going to explain to you my first experience. The first time a tried this place I ordered the quesabirria torta. I will save you the stomach pain don't get it. The bread is so soggy that it feels like you are eating a big bugger it was so slimy that just the feel of it on the mouth it made you want to spit it back out. The meat was so bland that even the salt in the table did not help out. Since they poured the sauce on top the bread gets cold right away. Now for the moment of truth is this place Dendinger approved. Unfortunately NO NO NO NO NO!!!! When eating at a restaurant you want to feel safe that you will not find hair in your food. And this place made sure to out hair on mine. Ruining the whole experience. I decided to give them a second chance and it was so disappointing that I don't think I will ever go back again. I'd never had taco Tuesday until a month ago and yes I'd been missing a lot, so now I've been kinda obsessed with taco Tuesdays and been trying it at different taquerias. Today I decided to try the taco Tuesday at Los Portales Taqueria. At $2.40 per taco, and you could choose your meat from the options of chicken or pork, it was a pretty good deal. I decided to try the pork el pastor (which was really delicious, and I would definitely get this again) and the grilled chicken (which typically I like but particularly today it was not my favorite, probably on a taco Tuesday like today they perhaps cook the chicken kind of in a rush, so it was lacking the delicious grilled/charred flavor). This place has a self serve salsa bar with plenty of seating and homey feel. They service is quick and accommodating. This is my go to spot for tacos and agua frescas. This is what we got: 2 quesabirria tacos plate (4/5) - newest one on the menu and its a pretty good deal with plenty of birria meat in each taco. Make sure you add some salsa in the consomme to adjust to your liking! Ok im going to say it...this is the best Mexican restaurant in Contra Costa County! We ordered two super burritos. One carne asada and the other bbq chicken. Sour cream on the side of course. If you've ever felt as though there wasn't enough meat in your burrito or the flavors were lacking, come here! You will be pleasantly surprised at how perfect the meat ratio is. They also have the best chips and salsa station. Their mango salsa is so good along with their light green salsa. They also have grilled onions in their station too. We grabbed a to-go order on a lazy Saturday after Christmas - they didn't seem to be particularly busy, but given COVID that seems unfortunately typical these days. We got a Jumbo Burrito, Chile Relleno Combo Plate ($8.25), a Pork Tamale, a Shrimp Taco ($4.55) and a Fish Taco ($4.55). The order came with chips & salsa for free. The chips and salsa were my favorite menu item - the pork tamale came in second and both were solid but not out of the ordinary. The fish & shrimp tacos are always a good litmus test for how fresh meats are in a restaurant - these both seemed old but still technically edible. The shrimp could have used a better cleaning. Normally I really like their tacos and burritos, and would give them a 4 out 5 any day (even a 5 for their tacos). But yesterday I had 2 chicken and 2 asada tacos and a asada burrito, and the meat was so salty I couldn't even eat it. I called to let them know and they said if I come back they would fix it but I told them I was just letting them know and would try them again next time. I grew up in Concord and back then (the 80's) my family's concept of Mexican food was Taco Bell. Not because there wasn't any good mexican food in the area, but because my parents didn't like it. Off to college I went and my eyes were opened to this world of delicious taquerias. Los Portales has kept this love alive when I visit my parents house. They've got great portions, great flavors, and great service. Food: Fish Tacos (4.45 as of this writing): Almost $5 a taco seems steep until you realize how big it is. It's got a good helping of fixin's and fish. Nacho Fries: I got it with Carne asada and shamefully finished the whole thing myself. "I'm trying to lose weight" yeah... sure... It was just so good that i had to finish it. It's not small by any means and no one person should be eat it but damn it, they were tasty. Chips!: Free chips with salsa bar. Most of the places I go to have one and this place is no exception. In general, great touch. Quesadilla: I ordered an adult one for my kids. Warning: They put some pico in it that I believe had jalapenos. It was a little spicy and my daughter didn't like it. We've been here twice and would definitely go back.
