My partner got al pastor and he said it's one of the best al pastor tacos in WS. I tried a bite and I agree. It was full of flavor, juicy, and you get some bits of the fat grilled to perfection. YUM. El Paisano has been a Winston-Salem staple for many years. It has authentic Mexican tacos and my favorite Sopes! The service is always friendly. They also serve many different types of soup. The sopes are always delicious crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The MASA is always fried just right. They use fresh quality ingredients and you can tell! I always get chicken sopes. There is a layer of fresh refried beans, chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream and I always order slices of a whole fresh avocado on top two. The queso fresco they use is always delicious! They now have a salsa station with lots of different salsa choices. There are at least 12 of them. There are spicy very spicy and not so spicy options. There is absolutely no ambience as it is basically as one other yelper described it hole in the wall, but don't let the appearance on the outside nor the inside fool you as the food there is delicious! They also have several different Aguas Frescas and the Horchata is usually very tasty. The prices have gone up as they have at other places, but they are still relatively reasonable. I enjoyed the Pozole Verde here, and was intrigued watching fresh tortillas being hand formed and immediately put on the grill. So I came back to try some tacos - and I ordered 2 Carnitas and 2 Chorizo ! The tacos were well filled and topped with plenty of chopped white onion and cilantro, with sliced radish and lime wedges on the side. They have a typical Mexican menu, with a bunch of different meats, enchilada, gorditas, menudo, caldo de res, mole, etc. I ended up ordering tacos de cabeza, and my friend ordered taco al pastor. Each order comes with four tacos with meat, radishes, cilantro, onion, and a lime on the side. Super juicy, the way they ought to be. Pretty great, no frills, authentic flavor. Best thing is they are making the tortillas on the spot, which is not something you see often in Winston Salem. Nothing beats a fresh tortilla. They also have a decent selection of salsas. 4.5 stars for the tacos alone, but deductions because the seating area and salsa bar always look like a storm came though. Despite the number of people behind the counter, I've peronally never seen anyone cleaning out front. The tripa (not to be confused with tripe) is DELICIOUS--nicely charred, and well-seasoned. I often ask for them to be extra dorado because if they're not crispy, they're a little rubbery. I've since tried tripa tacos at La Perlita (also on Waughtown Rd), La Tili (Sprague), and Los Potros (in Kernersville), and Paisano has the best. I have also had their tacos de lengua, carne asada, buche, al pastor, carnitas, plus arroz + frijoles, and the pozole. I've never had pozole anywhere else so I can't speak on that, but I come here specifically for the tacos anyway! It's easy to get in and out of the parking lot, and to find a parking space. Passing through Winston-Salem on a Thursday night, I took to Yelp to find the best tacos at a place that would be open past 9pm. The reviews and photos of the food here, though good, did not do this place Justice. We were so incredibly happy with our tacos and the good fortune we had to try the green pozole special on this night. The tacos came with the great surprise of radish and a roasted jalapeño on the side as well as ample lime and nicely flavored green and red salsas. The carnitas had the perfect crispy finish and were my favorite. The pastor, usually my go-to taco were also great and saucy. But the most special part were the made right before our eyes tortillas. Our family likes to think we are taco connesieurs, and this place ranks very highly on our list of bests from tacos tried all across the country and Mexico. I haven't had pozole since living in Mexico in the 90s and this pozole was an awesome throwback experience. It was chock full of chicken and hominy and yummyness. My first visit was today. As soon as I walked in, I noticed one of the cooks making homemade tortillas on the griddle. Now that's a good sign of things to come. Salsa bar was a nice touch. Green sauce was pretty warm! I got a steak taco, and a chorizo taco. Both were very good. But the sope (with al pastor) was my favorite. Finished the meal with a horchata to drink. Overview: Paisano El Tacos is a small Mexican restaurant on the shadier side (south-east) Winston-Salem that serves authentic Mexican dishes like Mexican-style tilapia, sheep-stomach soup, and cow-head scrap tacos. The patronage is mostly Spanish speaking though their staff can speak enough English that communication is typically not a problem. The Food: Tacos - The cabeza taco was quite soft and flavorful, and if you can get over the fact you're probably eating all components of the head including the sensory organs, I wholehearted recommend it. The asado (steak) taco was pretty dry and not special. The lengua taco was flavorful but also too dry and overcooked. The buche taco (pork stomach) was decent also and I would recommend it. Menudo - I was immediately disappointed by the menudo soup due to the foul odor accompanying the dish. I believe this is a result of poor cleaning of the beef stomach, but cannot be certain. The stomach squares are fairly soft and chewy, and the base was a fairly simple tomato/chili soup. Tacos Dorados - aka taquitos. Very soft and flavorful though only available filled with chicken. Not particularly unique, but still solid. The Service: There is no waiter service here whatsoever. The establishment: There are bench-style seats, and a decently clean bathroom, as well as a TV in the corner playing telenovella. I would see groups of 4 being appropriate. There is no soda fountain but a fridge in the corner houses a fair selection of Mexican soft drinks. The Price: You will spend about the same here as you would at Chipotle ($7.50-$10), though you will definitely not be as full. Conclusions: While Paisanos El Tacos lacks the uniquely bursting flavors of El Rancho Taqueria, the portion sizes of Chipotle, and the ambiance and quality control of fancier restaurants, it is still a decent place to enjoy authentic Mexican food. read more

This unassuming restaraunt provides the residents of Winston Salem with unbelievably authentic Mexican cuisine. This is not your average Americanized Mexican restaraunt. Don't go in expecting it to be covered in salt and fake cheese. For starters we ordered a Coke which was made in Mexico. You walk in and you see a lady making homemade tortilla shells behind the counter. We ordered the chicken tacos which were incredibly authentic. Fresh cilantro and jalapeños and homemade salsa from their salsa bar all on a homemade tortilla shell. This place will save you a trip San Antonio or San Diego.
