I'd have to say everything in the steak entree except the beans and rice, was drowning in oil. The server wasn't that attentive either. I don't know why there are such bad reviews...either people have never had real authentic Mexican food from San Diego or we went on a good day there. So from a person who truly knows what GOOD Mexican food tastes like. Trust me. This place IS good. Lol. Anyways the food was excellent compared to any Mexican I've had on the east coast thus far. Obviously nothing compares to Cali Mexican food but hey this is very close. I prefer something a little more spicy than sweet when it comes to the salsa but other then that it was pretty good. I tried their bean and cheese burrito this time around and it was actually very good, and that's after trying 3 other Mexican places in the last week. So out of the 4 Mexican places this week I've been too this place tops it. I've just been on a hunt for the best of the best. The lady was very nice and customized the bean and cheese burrito I got so it was a "bigger" one instead of the side order size they have. Only complaint is they didn't fold in the ends at all. Lol. Servers always are friendly and nice to my family. Drink specials always a plus. Its a quick serve Mexican meal. I have always been give food that is warm and authentic. We stop by and they had Fajitas for $10.99 which is a great deal on Tuesday nights. Margaritas for $4.00 as well also a great deal. We will go back on a Friday next month as we enjoy the live music! read more

Jalapeno margarita was delicious but didnt know would come out in the hugggee size... Do not eat there! The Carne Asada was inedible, I couldn't cut with a knife...and forget about chewing it. They couldn't get the burrito my son ordered right. The retried beans were grey. The lettuce looked very old. That was the best part of our dinner. The waitress walked by once when we got our drinks and asked"how's everything here"... our response was "you our water is good". The food was dropped off and she didn't come by once. I had to ask for the manager to complain about the Carne Asada. He responded by telling me "why didn't you tell me before"... no words. Then the waitret stopped by and said, "do you want me to take your card"... "um NO not before I see my check. She brings the check with my horrible meal on it... I had to tell her to take it off the check. Most ridiculous restaurant experience!!!!!!! EVER!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I can give them negative stars! My wife and I have been here a couple times. The food is pretty good but the last time we tried to go we left because the mariachis were blasting us with music. Food was really good. Had a mix platter of tacos which included chicken, flank steak, and carnitas. They need to make sure the meat is not dripping too much so that it won't tear through the tortilla. I like my tacos hand held all the way to the end :). Spicy sauce is very good. While I am thrilled to have a new restaurant out in the 'burbs, I was less than thrilled with my experience here. Understandably, Los Toltecos just opened and has the normal kinks to work out. I didn't expect to walk in on their 5th day open and have a 5 star experience. I did expect that service and food would be better than it was. We decided to stop in about 1:15 on Sunday for a light snack and a margarita. The restaurant was full, but no one was waiting to be seated, there were a few empty tables and plenty of seats at the bar. My husband and I took two seats at the bar. We sat for quite some time (I am guessing 10 minutes) before the bartender greeted us. When he did, he asked if we were waiting for a table to which we replied that we wished to eat at the bar. He didn't seem to pleased, but cheerfully took our order for two premium margaritas, a bowl of guacamole and the Nachos Carbon. I felt bad for the waitstaff - they were clearly working very hard to try and service the guests. No one was standing around, but service seemed disorganized. No one was staffing the bar so servers were making their own drinks. The bartender was responsible for several tables in the lounge so had a hard time serving anyone who decided to actually sit at the bar. It was just chaotic. The food was disappointing. I like chunky tableside guacamole. I like the ability to order it spicy. That is what I expected from a chain such as Los Toltecos. What I got was light green whipped fluff with little flavor and certainly no heat. I found the salsa bland and too thin. On the bright side, the chips were hot and fresh. The nachos initially looked good, but the middle of the plate was just a mess. Since we had never gotten any silverware and there was no one around to ask, we ended up digging in with our fingers. This was ok on the outer edges of the plate, but the center where the cheese, sour cream and guacamole had all pooled was impossible to eat. The steak on the nachos was tender, but just too salty. Needless to say, the sweet kittens up for adoption at the Pet Value found me irresistible due to the cheesy smell on my hands. I must have used half a pack of cocktail napkins trying to get my hands clean. On a positive note, they did a lovely job of remodeling the place. The décor is beautiful and fitting for a Mexican style restaurant. There are plenty of booths and tables where larger families/groups could gather. However, if you are looking for a quiet atmosphere, this is not the place. It's quite loud in the restaurant. My last comment - I ordered the premium margarita. It was just ok. I prefer the homemade sour mix and these tasted like they were made with a mass produced sour mix. The tequila selection I thought was somewhat small for a Mexican restaurant - maybe 15 selections or so tops. I hope the restaurant is successful. We don't have too much to choose from out in South Riding so Los Toltecos is a welcome addition. However, they are going to have to step up their game for me to return. I'll probably give them another chance in a month or two. read more

We are here recently on a late evening Tuesday night. Overall, our first time here was simply was 'okay'; nothing spectacular, but also nothing wrong with our food or dining experience. The Negative: I definitely consider myself a salsa snob and there's, in my opinion, tasted awful; no flavor or heat. I asked for the tomatillo (spicer) and even that tasted awful and definitely not spicy. The Positives: The steak fajitas tasted good and arrived still sizzling, fresh. Our waitress was also very good. In general I think this place is worth a try if you're in the area, but overall the food tasted like sub-par Mexican food that lacks the 'wow factor'. read more

If I could give no stars I would!! My co-worker and I headed here for lunch and I was so disappointed. I ordered the lunch make-your-own combo platter and chose a beef taco and a chicken chalupa. My co-worker got CARNE ENCEBOLLADA (steak and onions). To start the service was slow. When they delivered our food, I asked for more salsa and a refill on my iced tea. I started with the chalupa, which was nice and crispy on the outside but the inner part of the tortilla was soggy. And then I found a bone in it. So I switched to my taco....I didn't even know a taco could be made that bland! I really needed that salsa!! When the waiter came by I grabbed him to remind him about the salsa and tea, I told him about the bone and he immediately scooped up my plate and left. He came back quickly with the salsa and tea. A few minutes later the manager came by to let me know she was removing my meal from the bill. About 10 minutes later, the waiter came by again to ask if I wanted to order something different!!!???!!! This whole time I was assuming they were remaking my food. I refused the offer (I wonder if they would have charged me for new food? I wonder if they thought they were doing something nice by removing a meal I didn't eat from my bill?) and waited for my co-worker to finish her meal, which she really liked. Bottom line....I am glad the chips and salsa were tasty as it was all I got for lunch that day! . read more

The worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. I took 3 bites and threw the rest away. The dough was way undercooked the cheese was half 1/4 melted and I could pick up the re fried beans with a toothpick. The service was both very friendly and relatively quick. Or drinks were kept filled and our server came by a couple of times to ensure we were happy with our food. The food was good too. It was freshly made with quality ingredients and had very good, not great, flavoring. The guacamole was VERY good as was the salsa. Or meals were hot, the fried items were crisp (freshly fried, not sitting around) and both the tacos and burrito had plenty of good filling. I was seated promptly for a 1 o'clock lunch. Staff was friendly. Served chips and mild salsa (I prefer spicy salsa). Ordered the carne asada burrito which came covered in sour cream and lettuce with a side of rice which was tasty. Ordered the $10 jalapeño margarita which wasn't spicy at all. I prefer the one at T'Kila in Stone Ridge which has noticeable kick. I could only finish a 1/4 of the glass, it was so big. I wish there was a smaller, spicier version. Good first impression overall. Can I give ZERO STARS??? 3rd time we visited. My wife was served a chicken QUESADILLA. Half of the chicken was raw. Not sure how that happened but the way the waiter and manager handled it was to deny it and say it was impossible. The thing is, we showed the waiter the chicken on the plate and he said it was not chicken. The manager was even more emphatic that it was not chicken. It was inside the quesadilla so what was it? The food was good. Not great but good. May be slightly over-priced for what we got but relative to other Mexican restaurants, it's comparable. Atmosphere and decor was great. This place would have gotten 4-5 stars if the service was better. Food took a very long time to come. About 30 minutes which is extremely long for generic Mexican food. We didn't order anything fancy. The only time our server came to us was to get our drink and food orders and to give us our bill. We got no refills so it was hard to enjoy a meal with and empty glass. This place has great potential. I think management needs to work on hiring more servers and getting the kitchen up to speed. read more
