Solidly four stars for this area. If I were at home in California, it would be 3 or 3.5 stars, but here in the Camberville area, it's second only to Zoe's on Beacon, which is now closed. Some caveats -- my review is for eating in, not delivery. The space is bright and clean and the counter service was helpful, friendly and fast. We were in and out in less than 40 minutes. Some of the menu items probably would have suffered and been less tasty if delivered, particularly the crab rangoons. However, in person, all was good. We had the General's chicken -- medium pieces, crispy, with bright green freshlooking steamed broccoli -- as well as the black pepper beef, which was also well made. I had a small serving of hot and sour soup which was tasty and almost big enough for two people. My hot jasmine tea was served in a "vente" sized go cup with a lid. Inconsistency is the word that comes to mind when thinking of Lotus express. Tonight solidified the reason why I will NEVER order or visit this establishment again. Prior to tonight I had ordered delivery from Lotus express 3 times. My orders took roughly 45minutes and the food was fine. Tonight as I tried to place an order the woman decided that they no longer delivered to Medford (a 10 minute drive from the location). Why the sudden change? Everything tasted incredibly fresh! I had the chicken with black bean sauce, brown rice, and a vegetable spring roll (lunch special, $9). Spring roll stood out immediately as most spring rolls at chinese restaurants have at least a small hint of freezer burn. But not this one! Tasted like it was just rolled, fried, and then immediately served to me. Brown rice perfectly prepared, and chicken had excellent flavor but just a tad on the salty side for my taste. $14 lunch specials. Seriously??!! I should have walked out when I had the chance... To be fair, the food was pretty good. Not great. Not worth $14. The portion was small. The rice was not hot, but almost warm. I had the mala shrimp and it was nice and spicy. For the price, I should have received a lot more food. The lunch special came with 2 tiny crab rangoon that barely had any filling. No soup. Nothing else. This place skimps when it comes to feeding its customers. So, if you're hungry go somewhere else. Zoe's Cafe, which is about 1.5 miles away also serves mala style fish/shrimp. Their lunch specials are much more in line with lunch prices (all under $10), and you get a reasonable portion of food. Always on the hunt for a good I guess you could say Americanized Chinese food. I was close by so I do after reading all the reviews I decided to check it out and I was not disappointed. You basically place your order at the counter and it will bring it out to you so it is not a sit-down restaurant but it does have a sit-down restaurant price. I felt it was a bit high and prices but well worth the quality of food you received. If the orange chicken was a little bit crispier it probably my favorite one in town. This place is a pretty solid take out place! (Delivery only review) When i ordered, I was really craving some drunken noodles along with some type of dumpling and was happy to find out that I could get both here. Aside from these two dishes I also got their wonton soup. My favorite things were definitely the wonton soup and the drunken noodle. The wontons in the soup were great and the actual broth was not too salty and had a good amount of scallions (a must for it to be good!). The drunken noodles were a solid choice - quite a large portion for the price also. They had some good flavor to it thought it wasn't a particularly great iteration of drunken noodles. I ordered drunken noodles as mild spicy which was really taken note of and I was happy for it. The crispy tofu was also really really good and not oily at all but perfectly fried. The thing I would definitely not order again are the pan fried dumplings. They had too much meat and not much of anything else. The meat was also not that well seasoned and just tasted quite meh. However, the saving factor of these were the dough, which was pretty good but a bit on the thicker side than I like (though I guess i this case it was good since there was too much meat without any veggies). My boyfriend and I are obsessed with Lotus Express. It seems like there are two types of Chinese restaurants, the ones that are super cheap with low quality food, or the higher quality food thats really expensive. Lotus has high quality food for an affordable price. I love the crab rangoon and sesame chicken. My boyfriend gets the shrimp with vegetables and boneless spare ribs. I also love all the sushi i have tried there. They are usually super speedy too. My only (tiny) complaint would be that i wish their poke bowl was little bit bigger, the only i got hardly filled the bowl. read more

Don't let the building, location or name fool you, this is the real deal. I went there tonight and had the Spicy Miso Beef Ramen and a Spicy Szechuan Wontons. Both were respectably spicy and really delicious. I am usually skeptical of multi-Asian cuisine restaurants because they usually mean that they might do one kind well and the others poorly but I have the sense that they are dedicated to all of the different cuisines they offer. There is obviously an attention to detail and freshness that you typically do not see in storefront Asian restaurants. Another comforting thing is that their menu, while offering a good variety, is not your typical miles-long Chinese restaurant menu. It makes me confident that the ingredients are fresh. It is obvious that the food has has not been sitting in a steam table or under heat lamps all day. The space is clean and well lit and while you can still see some of the structural residuals from the KFC that used to occupy this space, it is definitely not junk food. If you are looking for sweet and sour pork and pu-pu platters, this probably isn't for you but if you want a flavorful meal for not a ton of money, this is the place. Best Asian food in Somerville hands down and it's not looking even close! Their Mala chicken is one of the best dishes I have ever eaten anywhere. This is definitely my new favorite local Asian cuisine restaurant. The staff is super friendly, they have never gotten an order wrong (I've been there probably about a dozen times so far), the food is delicious and the restaurant is very clean. There are two reasons I can't give it 5 stars: 1: The tofu is the only thing I've had that I was disappointed in. It's dense and soggy and instead of the desired light, delicately crisped tofu. 2: When you order in-house and sit down to wait, they bring everything piecemeal instead of all at the same time, so one person in your party might be eating while another is waiting. Or you might have your main dish, but not your side dish, which is annoying when you want to enjoy it all at the same time. Tasty food; the stir-fry chicken was delicious (though drenched in sodium) and the spicy shrimp had a surprisingly strong kick for a cheap fast food place. Getting such good food was especially unexpected given the reasonable prices--though don't be fooled, it's still cheap comfort food, not gourmet by any stretch. A few things kept this place off a five star rating. The fried rice was flavorless and not worth the calories. And, for eat-in, they charge a whole dollar for soda refills; I guess the food prices are cheap enough they have to nickel and dime for a profit. Still, that won't keep me from ordering there again. Lotus Xpress is a solid choice. Their food is of excellent quality, if a little bit on the expensive side. Almost everything I've had here has been delicious. I think that their Chinese food is a little better than the other regions of food that they make. That being said, their Pad Thai is solid, their Drunken Noodles are passable. I have never tried their sushi, though I should rectify that. Seaweed salad is delish. Their appetizer sampler is delicious and huge, their crab rangoon are awesome. Everything is super fresh and made in house, never greasy. Their General Gao's is out of this world, perfectly fried and still crispy chicken in a hot and sweet sauce with crunchy broccoli. Their sweet and sour shrimp is also good. The Chinese eggplant with basil in garlic sauce and black pepper beef were just okay. Hot and sour soup is yummy along with chicken and broccoli.
