After a long day of work and a client event right after, my colleague suggested going to Louie. She was able to make a reservation for 9:30 but we were seated when we arrived at 8:50. I have only been to this place once and it was years ago, so I was excited to be back and try something new. While walking to our seats, I couldn't help but notice the mixture of aromas, all pleasant but piquant at the same time. This place is quaint and cozy but perfect for a nice dinner any day of the week. After browsing the menu, we decided to split an order of brussel sprouts and I chose the El Tigre for my cocktail. Each drink I've ever had with Mezcal has surprised me because aside from the smokiness, I never knew what to expect. This drink was perfect. It was smooth, not too smoky but perfectly balanced with the blood orange and lime. It also contains Angostura but I'm not sure I would have recognized it. Either way, it was super refreshing and I'd def. order it again. The brussel sprouts arrived after a little while and were just as I had hoped. Perfect char yet crispy, while seasoned with pecorino and lemon. I'm mad the picture I took came out blurry, because me telling you about them without seeing it doesn't do them justice. It was at that point we were given our complimentary bread and olive oil. Don't be deceived by the picture as it's a large block of bread! I'm unsure which seasonings they used on top but it def. has a kick, so beware. It's soft yet filling, so I'd suggest nibbling as to not get full before your entree. The olive oil was light and fresh and paired well with the bread, so well that I didn't even bother to ask for my normal balsamic and parm to accompany it. After we finished those, our entrees came. This was my first time ever eating Chitarra and I'm happy to announce it was a winner! The server said the chilli used for the sauce was Calabrian and does have a kick, so I opted for the smallest amount possible. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, and had the perfect ratio of sauce to noodle. Lest we forget the generous Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top, not too much to over power the dish but enough to complement it in the best way. The tomato sauce was bright and robust, bursting with flavors and this was the first time I could taste how fresh the tomatoes were. That def. made a difference. Since it was late, I only got a few bites and boxed the rest. It was probably best I tapped out when I did because I was still salivating over the brussel sprouts and the bites of pasta I had. By then, our server came and brought a dessert menu but we both declined. This was one of the best meals I've had in a while. They sat us at a crowded uncomfortable table, seems to me that reservations made far in advance would get the better tables. The food was honestly not as I expected, few selections, not many meat dishes. The mussels were very good. First of all it's located in the historic De Mun neighborhood in Clayton, so that in itself gives it a distinct charm. When you arrive, you'll notice a bustling vibe and shotgun style room (long and narrow) filled tables and quaint bar in the back. Phenomenal ambiance with dark wood, brick, wood floors, candles and perfect lighting. Can score to be as lively as you want or as romantic, so an outing with friends or a date all mix nicely. The staff is well trained, friendly, prompt and helpful. Nice work to this team & worth that extra tip! Do it!!!! Great wine list! Don't skip the breqd; light, airy & served with olive oil. Had the eggplant dip, highly recommend. Roasted chicken & beef tenderloins is what all five of us had...wish we would have just did this family style and all ordered something different in order to share...because all of it was outstanding! Finished the meal with a mix of cookies...molasses, shortbread, confetti...a delightful mix of different types and a great way to cap off such a great meal. A few months ago, I visited Louie for the first time, and it's safe to stay that I haven't stopped thinking about it since! My boyfriend and I made reservations to celebrate our anniversary. When we arrived, the hostesses greeted us warmly and wished us a happy anniversary. They asked if we'd rather wait for a table in the main area or sit right away in a cozier, more intimate spot at the bar in the back of the restaurant. We of course opted for the back and were very pleased with our choice. Our spot felt very private, and we were able to engage with the employees while they prepared our food and drinks. We also had a perfect view of the pizza oven. Our server treated us to some glasses of champagne since she knew we were celebrating our anniversary. Such a special touch! We also ordered some drinks, which were beautifully garnished and strong. For appetizers, we shared brussel sprouts and white bean hummus. The brussel sprouts melt in your mouth and provide the perfect amount of zing from the lemon. The white bean hummus portion was huge, so we ended up taking some leftovers home with us to enjoy later. It was so creamy and flavorful. For our main course, my boyfriend ordered the roast chicken, which he described as succulent. I had the pappardelle bolognese and was obsessed. At this point, our bellies were extremely full and satisfied, but we always have room for dessert! We shared the ice cream sandwich, which includes poppy seed macaron, vanilla almond crumble, orange mousse, and caramelized honey. Stopped in for a reservation last night for our girls night and our server (Courtney I believe) was an absolute doll. The drinks were wonderful- try their espresso martini and thank me later. For apps we had the eggplant dip, Brussel sprouts and burrata pizza. They were all delicious. The pizza was chewy and fresh- about 7 slices. Brussels had Parmesan I believe and a lemony flavor- so good. Eggplant dip came with naan bread and was a great sharing app. They bring out complimentary foccacia bread with oil too and it's to die for. One huge piece per person! For entrees, most of us had the halibut special which was delicious. Others had the pasta and loved them as well. All fresh and creative. The most perfect birthday dinner! Every single staff member was beyond kind. They all wished me happy birthday and I was amazed how they all knew. The service started off with focaccia bread and oil and it was so pillowy soft and delish. We both ordered wine and cocktails and they were great. Our server told us the pasta was handmaid so we knew we had to try it. The pasta was soft and the sauce was incredible. They surprised us with a chocolate torte for my birthday which was so sweet and it was amazing. Parking was super easy, they have tons of street parking. What an amazing dinner! Arrived early and had a beverage next door at Sasha's..cannot recommend that enough. Received text and confirmed reservations for 5pm for 2...received text 30 min before that I was due at the Restaurant in 30 minutes, however when I walk in, they cannot find my reservation....it was no issue as they quickly accommodated with a table for 2 right behind the bar. From the moment we sat down, service was impeccable. The entire staff worked together perfectly to take care of the guests. Was a pleasure to watch. The lighting was perfect...not to dark. I could read the menu's w/o issue. Seating was good with ample space between guests. As the sun went down and started to peek through the blinds, they quickly adjusted for the guests. Now the Food....Just WOW! Italian salad and bread were perfect. fresh and perfect start to the meal. The Octopus was one of the best I've ever been served at a restaurant with perfect tenderness and seasoning that you could not stop eating until it was gone. I've never ordered roast chicken at a restaurant, but we saw enough reviews we had to try it...it was perfectly seasoned, crispy skin, and piping hot...I cannot think of anything that could have made it better! Spectacular, Impressive, Stellar and Delicious are the first four words that come to my mind when describing a meal at, Louie and the service can be summed up as, impeccable. My most recent visits, had my tastebuds dancing and celebrating through the entire meal. Being a single diner, I always sit at the bar and the service is super attentive as if I were seated at one of the many tables. Being seated at the bar, I enjoy watching the bartender(s) masterfully make my cocktail. They truly know their skill and present a refreshing adult beverage. I recently expanded my choice of a starter and I am glad I did. I typically always begin my meal with, Brussels Sprouts. My new experiences were, their Italian Salad and Broccolini. Keep in mind both are big enough to share if you're also getting a main dish. The Italian Salad is made with Romaine lettuce and has Chickpeas as a ingredient. I am a fan of Chickpeas in a salad, so this makes me happy. The Broccolini, blew my mind. It was grilled, crisp and extra full of flavor. I could not finish it all and brought half of it home. I used the leftovers to make a omelette in the morning and it was spectacular. Best leftovers I have ever brought home from a restaurant. My two most recent main dishes have been the Broccolini Pizza and their Mussels. The pizza has Ricotta as its cheese and also has lemon and Calabrian Chili as additional toppings. It's one of the best vegetarian themed pizzas I have enjoyed. Their Mussels are absolutely mind blowing. I'll say they are the best I have ever had and I eat a lot of Mussels. The white wine broth, with shallots, garlic and tomatoes was a perfect bath for the mussels and for dipping the grilled Focaccia. If I could of brought the leftover broth home, I would have. A minor detail that impressed me, was the fact that not one of my mussel shells were missing a mussel. If you enjoy mussels, I highly recommend that you order these. I also want to give a shout out for the staffs attention to details. They provide extra and appropriate serving pieces for each course. I am dining at a bar and I feel as if I'm receiving white linen table service. Great job! A friend and I were able to walk in around 6pm and were able to snag a table for two. The restaurant has fairly dark lighting but with flash photography you can tell how beautiful the food turned out. Started off with their delicious house made focaccia which was fluffy and well seasoned. We then had the margarita pizza and chitarra for our main course. Both were phenomenal. The best margarita pizza I have ever had truly. The dough was thin where the toppings were but so thick and bouncy when you got to the crust. I have never had pizza like this before in STL. Had the seasonal carrot ravioli in brown butter sauce, hubby had halibut on top of couscous with roasted zucchini and walnuts. The food combinations are different, yet still delectable. Service was great too, our server, Josh, was very friendly and patient as we made decisions on food and drink. If you are looking for large portions, look somewhere else. These portions are not that big, but the food is delicious.... Rich sauces make for a filling portion, despite being on the smaller side. Meal is pricey, it's not someplace I would go for weekly meals, but for a special occasion, like an anniversary or birthday, it's worth the splurge. It was my birthday, and they provided a lovely piece of chocolate ganache cake, or perhaps it was a flourless chocolate torte, not sure. Either way, it was spectacular! Hands down one of my favorites in St Louis. You cannot go wrong. From the bread and oil you get at the start to anything you'll order everything is super high quality and done super well. We got the burrata appetizer special and the burrata was super light, fluffy, and it was amazing. The three entrees I've had include the cavatappi w Italian sausage(which u think was a special), chittara, and the peppardelle bolognese. I can't even pick out something that stands out because everything is so good and you will not be disappointed. I visited Louie for probably the 4th or 5th time last night. While all past meals have been excellent, I want to draw attention to the roasted chicken w/ rapini and au jus. I had this last night after looking at several other reviews on here. It was absolutely outstanding. So much so that I had to ask the server how it was prepared in order to achieve that level of appeal on a plate. The crunch on the skin was fantastic, while the chicken maintained so much moisture. The server explained their process, which I won't go into detail on here in case it is somewhat of a secret. But after hearing what they do, it explains why it would be very difficult to replicate at home. The au jus was fantastic as well for dipping. I don't have a picture, but there are several examples in other reviews. It was truly one of the best entrees I've ever had. Louie and Wright's Tavern (Matt McGuire's other restaurant in Clayton) are my 2 favorites in Saint Louis. Started with the cauliflower frito appetizer that was refreshing and light, then each had Coctails followed by the pasta and chicken. My coworker and I were in town for a conference and on our first night here decided to give this place a go. Happy to report it was a great choice. The food is amazing. I had the pappardelle and my coworker had the pork chop. I can vouch that the pappardelle was perfect, especially for the colder weather (we were seated outside). From what I saw the pork chop was good too. Our server was a good time and made us feel welcome. The only thing I would advise about is that this place could be hard to find because it was a really tiny sign on its entrance that's easy to miss.
