The patio is nice but small and right next to Sasha's Wine Bar to give the whole block a bustling/lively feel. The décor inside is nice, but I really prefer it over the patio solely for the aromas. Made reservations for 8:15 this past Friday knowing it would be crowded. Arrived with my HOT date a few minutes early and was immediately greeted with apologies from the kind, attentive staff (again, we were early for our reservation because we were so giddy to eat, but they were still super apologetic about the minimal wait). ***This is my only complaint***: when we were seated, the tables on either side of us had no food for me to envy and help determine my eventual choices (Yeah, not actually a complaint) This issue was solved when we met our server Jordan (who was absolutely fabulous and made our entire experience at Louie incredible). He talked us through the cocktail options and sold me on the 'Industry Sour' after giving me a brief anecdote on how it ended up on the menu (my companion even switched over after trying mine a few times). We started with the Brussels Sprouts, but Jordan decided to bring us an order of the Cauliflower Fritto as well because he said it was one of his favorite dishes on the menu. I'll admit, I completely overlooked the Cauliflower dish because it was in fact Cauliflower (let's be honest, not one of my go-to veggies), but I begrudgingly tried it because of his stellar drink recommendation. I thank Jordan for allowing me to see the error of my ways... the Brussels Sprouts were great by the Cauliflower Fritto was just that damn good. I knew going into this meal that the Sweet Corn Ravioli would be making an appearance but after a brief debate and some glances at other patrons' pizzas, we just had to try one. We had the pesto pizza and boy was it good. The crust was dynamite. I just feel bad that we paired it with the ravioli because there was no way we were going to give it more love than that. Just when we were putting our forks down and discussing a possible pit stop at Clementine's Creamery, Jordan decides to knock our socks off and bust our belts with the kitchen's take on ice cream sandwiches. Louie is not only one of the best restaurants we've been to in a while, but probably EVER. We did not have a reservation, instead we opted for the bar seating and waiting over a Sasha's with a glass of wine instead...GREAT DECISION! We were called about 45 min after we arrived and sat at the pass watching the owner deliver his beautiful food. The charred eggplant is a must! We also had the mussels, eggplant and ravioli. Each one was wonderful and seasoned to perfection! Including the smoked ricotta over the butternut squash ravioli. Portion size is substantial, leaving me plenty of leftovers for a meal the next day, that was almost as good as eating it the night it was made. GO NOW, thank me later! read more

My friends had been telling me to come here for a while and I'm just sad I didn't listen to them sooner. Ambiance is super coolcute. Perfect for a date, girls night, dinner with family or whatever. Our server was fantastic - enthusiastic but not creepily so. Attentive but not in our face. You can tell they pay attention to the small details. We started with the hummus which was amazing. Honestly how can hummus be THAT GOOD? My husband got the chicken which he really enjoyed - good portion and extremely fresh. I got the broccolini pizza which was very unique. We finally tried this place because of all the raves we'd heard, and - bottom line - we ended up thinking it was pretty good, but not worth the money. The service was excellent and all of the staff were very pleasant. Nice atmosphere, but noisy. I tried the salsiccia pizza, and the crust was thin the way I like it, but not really very crispy, and the outer fat part of the crust was burnt in places and had an ashy smell and taste. I guess it's a thing, but I don't like it. The toppings were tasty, but overall the pizza was nothing to rave about or that I'd crave to have again. My two companions each had a pasta. They enjoyed their meals, but neither would order what they had again, if we went back, which we probably won't. My favorite things were my cocktail, my glass of wine, the white bean hummus, and the bread. We had a good-enough time, but now that we've been once to check it out (and drop 150 bucks, not incl. tip), once was enough. For the money, there are other Italian places I like much better. read more

I could go on and on about the food at Louie but since that's already been done, I'm going to focus on the service here. The very first time my husband and I dined at Louie, we were greeted by the host who not only opened the door for us but introduced himself by name and shook each of our hands. I was absolutely floored by our first experience and told all of my friends how impressed I was by that simple gesture. We've dined here several times since that first time and it's always the same. Amazing food, wonderful staff, the restaurant itself is beautifully designed (can we talk about that floral wallpaper?!) and I really can't say enough positive things. Go as soon as you can. I can't say enough good about this place. The food here is love incarnate. I had to close my eyes when I ate to savor it all. I had a salad that made me want to cry it was so good. I had the sweet potato ravioli. It was like getting a warm hug from a friend. My one recommendation is that they need a massage therapist on duty after you finish your meal. read more

The first time I tried to go to Louie, I was told that the bar seats were for reservations only and that if I wanted to wait, I could either wait outside in the snow or go down to Sashas and wait there (as there is no space at all in this restaurant to wait for a table). Sashas has been less than happy about this situation - reasonably so - as their role is not to serve as the waiting area for another restaurant. Waiting in the freezing snow was also not a reasonable option. So I passed. I've since eaten there twice, once at the bar with a reservation and once at a table for a professional dinner with a large group (and a reservation). The bar dinner by myself was a joke. The food was ok (not fabulous), but I was treated like a second class diner and got little attention. At the professional dinner, I happened to be with a regular restaurant diner, so at least HE got loads of attention, and the rest of us were reasonably tolerated. I haven't been back since and don't plan to. To have a restaurant where it's very likely that people will need to wait for a table, yet have no space at all for people to do that in comfort, is absurd. Having lived in big cities around the world, I know there is attitude at fancy restaurants, but this one just isn't worth the price of discomfort. read more

(calling 9 days ahead) Dined here 2/17. We could only get in at 5 PM. First seating. Popular! I soaked in lots of details. First, Designers Guild wallpaper on the accent wall. Loved it. The touches of white in the paper definitely brightened up the space. The book matched marble wall---worth the investment. The bench seating along the wall that so many restaurants indulge in typically bothers me. What's the big deal? Well, I don't want your husband's ass in my face when you go in and out of your seat. Nor do I want your wife's cleavage in my face. With that said, this McGuire guy actually spaced the tables with enough distance that butt sniffing was not a problem. Thank you Matt. Acoustics...thanks again matt for not overbooking your very popular eatery. We were a party of four near the window, and I didn't need to raise my voice once to be heard. The restaurant was full. The greeter/mgr? was a nice looking guy who had a great vibe. Whoops, I can't forget to mention I loved the flatware and the serving pieces. The spoons handled more than a tablespoon worth of food. Thumbs up!! Food--- We ordered castlevetrano olives (just a favorite of mine), raviolo special (tasty, but I'm a little skittish when it comes to raw egg yolk floating onto my plate, but I walked through my fear and enjoyed it), and the polenta (WOW, I loved it, Mushrooms done to perfection). I regret not ordering the gnocco and the cauli fritto. Next time! I might become a regular. Entrees: Two of us had the pork chop which was OUTSTANDING, great flavor. I'd highly recommend it if you like roasted peppers, not too spicy on my heat scale. Husband had the grilled strip steak, OUTSTANDING, and my friend had the trout special. She raved about the trout, my bite was slightly fishy which is so odd for trout, I'm going to reserve judgement. It's unfair to judge on one small taste. Presentation beautiful on all dishes. Bar---- I loved the cocktail menu, prices weren't crazy. Thanks again to management for that. No one had wine, but the list looked well researched. SERVICE----here's where the fifth star became 'a shooting star' and disappeared into the galaxy. Ok so we weren't rushing to order when we first arrived. We probably spent 30 minutes at our table talking and enjoying our cocktails. The server, big guy, beard, w tatts and some darn cool ink started off well welcoming us. He probably realized we weren't hurrying through our meal, and left us alone. I'm cool with that too. He took the next table's order before ours, TOTALLY appropriate. He spoke so loudly that I couldn't help but be distracted by his conversation. I caught him saying that he use to be a server at Niche. At first I thought to myself, oh Gerard's servers were always top notch. How nice. He recommended several dishes to them, as he should. So, I refocused on our table, and a few minutes later he took our order. Our starters came, a LONG time later. (My friend's husband was very hungry for traveling, but we were all relaxed and enjoying Louie). Again I hear server announce specials to the table next to us on the opposite side and I hear NICHe mentioned AGAIN. OK dude, this is not Niche. Niche is in restaurant heaven. Worry about serving and establishing Louie as a place where service excels. *insert long wait for food between starter---over 25 minutes* Food was delivered by a lovely girl. Waiter checked back after I had just taken my first bite. He did not check back after that, and I did want another drink. He did find his way back to ask if we wanted dessert but nothing was mentioned. Maybe "we have a great XXX tonight for dessert"...we may have been interested in splitting one. I don't know, maybe the patrons mentioned that they recognized the server, I probably should not judge. He just seemed like he was bellowing Niche's name. The patrons are right there, no need to shout, right? I predict Louie will be around a long time. It feels like that great neighborhood spot that everyone wants in their zip code. We were there a bit over 2.5 hours and we were seated the moment we walked in. Yeah, kitchen had to have been slow, and my food wasn't exactly HOT when my plate was delivered. Maybe coordinating the delivery of fish, pork, and steak was tricky. It WAS Oh-so-good though. I DO RECOMMEND eating here. WE LOVED THE FOOD. Glad to have Mr McGuire back doing what he clearly excels in. I've missed King Louie's and that wonderful patio. This restaurant has been called Italian, but it's more of the European type Italian food than the Americanized type of Italian food that can be found all over the United States. This food is plated very fancifully so that it looks like it could be photographed for a foodie magazine like Bon Appetit or the old, now defunct Gourmet magazine. The food is okay, nothing special although pretty to look at, and I thought it was just a tad bit overpriced, but it is definitely worth trying if you want something that is more European type Italian food. I will say that the service was very, VERY good. The interior of the restaurant is very fancy with a very well stocked bar and the service was good. It's kinda fun watching them at the pizza oven making pizza, but I want pizza when the crust isn't black on the edges. It's like a little bit of Italy on DeMun in Clayton. read more

This is likely to be among the best restaurants in St. Louis. Beautiful space with a great bar that spans much of the length of the restaurant. My wife and I sat at the bar and received excellent service. Cocktails and wine selection were great, and the food was off the charts. We started with the Roman Gnocco. It was almost like a lasagna, with very pillowy, gnocchi-like pockets stuffed throughout. I've never had anything quite like it and it was exceptional. Pretty rich though, not a light dish. Next we split the Marinara pizza, which they make in their wood-fired oven. It was so simple but absolutely perfect. One of the best pizzas I've ever had in St. Louis or anywhere. We had he broccolini veggie dish and it was light and delicious. Loved the Calabrian vinaigrette it came with. Lastly we split the agnolotti dish with butternut squash, brown butter, sage and walnuts, and it was the highlight of an already incredible meal. It was a truly perfect pasta dish. The squash was puréed and wrapped inside the agnolotti. I'm not even a big BN squash fan but this was to die for. I can not wait to go back! read more

Without any question this was the best overall start to finish meal I've had in a long time. My girlfriend and I went for a casual Tuesday date and we were overwhelming pleased. We each had a cocktail and split their brussel sprouts and had their chicken dish and chitarra pasta and each plate was fully cleaned by the time we left. Our waiter (Jordan) was incredibly knowledgeable about ALL of the dishes and was even able to describe the cooking intricacies to the finest detail at our questioning. Jordan made our dining experience there very relaxing yet fun and adds an intangible factor to Louie! Without question we will be back and I would recommend Louie to anyone looking for a quiet fine dining environment with excellent service, food, and aesthetics. read more

"Hey, you two!" Was how we were greeted when my husband and I entered Louie. The host introduced himself as Max, took both of our names and told us it would be about an hour wait if we'd like to go next door to Sasha's for a pre-dinner drink. Max was kind and attentive and made us feel at home. He was really great, but being asked to leave and wait somewhere else was kind of crappy. Hence the loss of a star. Purely because it seems as if Louie does not anticipate housing a significant amount of customers waiting. Seats at the bar are for dining guests. There are no benches or chairs in which to pass the time. This was only a slight annoyance, but one that caused us to spend more money. The food, the food was fantastic. The polenta with mushrooms was creamy and elegant. The agnolotti almost drove me to lick the plate when it was gone, and the broccolini pizza was amazing. All in All it was an incredible dinner. And that marble wall? I was ready to move my family in and live there. read more

OMG. Most amazing drinks!!! And the dinner entrees are PHENOMENAL! Started with the brussel sprouts and margarita pizza. So amazing! The cheese on the pizza was awesome!!! Went for lunch and was able to get in without a problem on a Friday. The server was new so didn't seem to know how to open the bottle of wine. They should probably have them practice opening some wines until they feel confident. They had someone guiding them through the process so the bottle got opened and overall the service was good. We got some sandwiches and the burrata. The food was good -- the sides were a little disappointing. Chips were chips and the cous cous was a bit bland. The wine did not disappoint though. The pesto chicken was ok. It seemed like something you could get a lot of places including a big chain local to Saint Louis. The roast beef was much better than most places. The menu at lunch is small, but luckily most of what we had was good so it didn't matter. Originally I wanted to come with some vegetarian friends and I'd say the options at lunch are too few to necessarily recommend that. I'll come back for dinner at some point to be able to try some more stuff. read more

What a great little spot for dates or outings with a smaller group of friends. Jordan was such a fun server and food, drinks, and atmosphere were awesome! Definitely recommend Brussel sprouts and Ragu appetizers but also heard that the cauliflower was delicious. For entrees we had the Agnolotti, Margherita pizza, and flank steak. Portions weren't huge so would suggest appetizers or salads first if you are really hungry. For dessert we did the bucket of cookies and Jordan surprised us with the ice cream sandwich! Friends, Romans, countryman lend me your ears! Ok inside joke with our server. I would contend that this is one of the best restaurants in town. It's tucked away in a nice corner of Clayton but you will miss the sign as you approach. It's absolute the smallest advert I've ever seen on a business. That being said, the food is incredible. A lot of best's if you know what I mean. We started with an eggplant dip served family style. You get a beautiful homemade pita and a dip with a hummus like consistency but with hot chili oil, pickled vegetables and fresh basil to set it apart. We could have stopped there it was so good. Thankfully we marched on and ordered some amazing dishes. I got the pork chop, which was a beautiful 20oz (or so) bone in chop that was at least 3 inches thick. The crust was amazing and cooked to perfection. From top to bottom it was moist and flavorful. It sat on this amazing middle eastern sauce with charred peppers. I know. Start the car honey. There was another dish called gnocco. It's not gnocci but rather a take on the best parts of a lasagna. Think a round, flat piece of pasta covered in bechamel, pork ragu and topped with crusted cheese and all baked. I did say the best parts of the lasagna. Amazing. My wife had the mussels and like all mussels they were good. That sauce though. It was a great red sauce with just the right depth and served with their toasted bread. Did I mention the bread? Smack your momma good. My son did get the salsiccia pizza and while it was very good, but it just wasn't able to stand up to the 3 amazing dishes we experienced. Great food, great drinks, great ambiance, great service. Made a reservation for 2 for Saturday night at the bar. The bartenders were very attentive and my cocktail, El Trigre, was refreshing and balanced. I wish the bar had purse hooks underneath but besides that everything was perfect. We ordered one of the specials and one regular menu item. The special was a goat cheese and mushroom pizza with lime zest and was so unexpected and delicious. Can't wait to go back and try their dessert and bring out of town guests here once it's safe(er) to do so. read more

The most disgusting attitude by a restaurant - ever. After dinner at home, we went to Louie's about 8:30 on a weeknight for a glass or two of wine. There were no parties waiting to be seated, several vacant tables and at least six open seats at the bar. The host greeted us and we said we'd like to sit at the bar for a wine. We were told (this is verbatim) "we reserve the bar for patrons waiting for dinner." When we said we'd like to enjoy a wine or two, we were told "you may sit at the bar if you have an appetizer." We went down the street to a Latin-themed restaurant and were welcomed. Two $12 glasses of wine and twenty minutes later we left satisfied. read more

My husband and I were craving a wonderful dining experience and Louie did not disappoint. We were greeted warmly, seated immediately and our waitress was attentive throughout our meal. We ordered the charred eggplant dip for a starter and it was delicious! The bread was incredible! The main dishes were full of flavor and perfect for a snowy evening. Great food, great service, great prices, what's more to want? I dined in and ordered carryout during COVID. The restaurant is physically small, so seating is limited. But if you can dine in, I recommend it. You get free bread (which is absent from the takeout) and the service is top notch with friendliness and responsiveness. The waiters will make sure that you are taken care of. The food will come out in large portions that will fill you up and satisfy your craves. The prices are a bit high, but are totally appropriate given the large portion sizes and the great taste. 5/5 read more
